Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new update. I'm a little nervous about this one but it's something - or someone, I've wanted to write about and that is Gary and my OC Jayme's (Jessie and James' adopted daughter) son, Dylan. He has Asperger Syndrome/mild autism so I didn't want to offend anyone by writing about him too quickly or ignorantly. What he has is very close to my heart and I really loved writing about Dylan and his grandfather, James, so I hope you enjoy too :3
Ages:
James: 48
Dylan: 9
Disclaimer: I own the story and Dylan. But I should also add I based some of his quirks and behaviours on Arnie from the film What's Eating Gilbert Grape, as well as other TV characters and people I have known.
"Jaaaames how long til they come?"
The lavender haired male smirked over from his position on the grassy seat below him and to the darker purple haired boy who was standing up. He was pacing around with a stem of corn in his hand.
"I thought you were going to stop calling me that one day. Is it a permanent thing?"
Dylan turned around to face his grandfather, a frown on his youthful and angelic face.
"James is your name so why would I call you anything other than that?" his frown grew even further as he other male turned to me and burst out laughing. Before James could answer him, he spoke again. "But you didn't answer my question. How long til they come?"
James couldn't help but shake his head fondly at his unusual family member before crossing his legs on the yellowing grass, picking up his own corn stem between his fingers.
"You're right; I didn't answer your question. And they'll be here pretty soon, buddy, pretty soon."
I smiled to myself from my position in the late day sun, just watching those two interact. Watching the planes take off from the nearby airport was their monthly ritual. I hadn't thought James would be the type into aircraft but when his grandson showed a passion for them from an early age; it became something James was happy to partake in also. That's what love does to people. You tolerate and perhaps end up loving things you wouldn't normally love.
"They'll be coming pretty soon?"
James brushed his long lavender locks out of his eyes and squinted over at Dylan, the setting sun clearly getting into his eyes.
"Well technically they'll be going soon. These planes are in Kanto to take off and fly to all around the world."
Dylan just made a 'hm' noise in return to his grandfather's words and continued pretending to use his corn stem as a sword. The sun was beginning to get into my eyes now and I decided to move, curling up next to James' knee.
You may find it odd that I was joining them when they weren't even my family but they still technically were. James had told me of his memories with Dylan and when the opportunity arose, I wanted to be a part of a different side of the young man. Besides, with Ben and Katie on their journeys and little James preparing for his, there wasn't much going on in the Ketchum household.
My thoughts of all the different families I was close to was interrupted by James letting out yet another loud laugh. Glancing over at Dylan, I saw he had decided to take a bite out of the plant he was holding. I couldn't help but smirk at his screwed up expression. He did not like the taste of it one bit.
"Is it not so good, Dyl?"
Dylan didn't respond with words and just walked over to a nearby row of the corn growing and bent over to spit his mouthful into the pile. When he looked up and saw James was looking, he tried to act like he hadn't done it and wiped the spit from his chin.
James didn't get cross and instead just patted next to him on the grass.
"Come sit here, Dylan." He smiled up at the eccentric boy before consulting his watch. "Come sit, one of the planes will be taking off really soon."
Upon hearing this, Dylan let out his trademark squeal of excitement and came running over to his grandfather. I couldn't help but melt slightly at this. Dylan wasn't good with words but his expressions and actions sure showed he was happy to be spending time James.
As the purple haired boy approached the older male, the latter smirked once again and playfully tugged up the legs of his jeans.
"Are you wearing odd socks, buddy?"
Dylan looked down with a blank expression and patted the back of his head lightly. He just let out an unbothered 'huh' noise in reply to James.
The lavender haired male just looked up his grandson lovingly before tugging the trousers back down over his legs. The boy's next action may be considered odd to some but to us, it was just Dylan.
He let out a violent shudder as the cuff of his jeans grazed the bare skin above his socks. He didn't have to explain what was wrong. James knew.
"Oh, I'm sorry, Dyl. I did the thing you don't like, huh?"
Dylan stopped shuddering and went back to tapping the back of his head rhythmically, giving his grandfather a displeased squint.
"Yeah, James agitated Dylan."
James smiled at Dylan with a quirk of his mouth that was half apologetic and half loving. He couldn't believe his luck that he was blessed with amazing children of his own and now had incredible children of his children to hang out with and influence him as well as him influencing them. For yet another time, James patted the ground for Dylan to sit.
The teal orbed young boy finally got the hint and let out a squeak before flopping his full weight onto the grass. James was busy looking up at the sky and didn't see Dylan squirm quite disgustedly. The nine year old wriggled away from his seat and let out a quiet gasp of horror. My eyes went to where he was pointing.
Dylan had only gone and squashed a worm to its death by sitting on it. James only realised what had gone on when his grandson began to quietly whimper.
James sighed out sympathetically, wrapping his arm around Dylan while he rocked himself slightly.
"I killed 'em, James, I killed 'em."
"I know, buddy." Was all James muttered gently, wrapping his arms more around Dylan and ruffling his silky locks to soothe him.
You might think reassuring the distressed boy would have been the best way to soothe him but that didn't work with Dylan. Being factual and to the point worked best. But you couldn't be too serious. He enjoyed funny things too.
Just as Dylan stopped sobbing and sniffled into his grandfather's jacket, a plane leaving Kanto suddenly made its entry into the sky. As if by magic, Dylan's tears dried up and he sat bolt upright to see the plane, letting out an ecstatic squeal.
"Look James, it's them!" Dylan gasped, as if he couldn't believe his luck seeing a plane take off even though they were in a field opposite the airport. "It's them, huh, James?"
Dylan's reaction was absolutely priceless to us both but especially James and you could see the love and pride he had for his grandson as he watched him.
"Yep, that's them, buddy."
Dylan beamed, waving his arms wildly, as if the many passengers of the plane heading to Hoenn could see them.
"Hiiiiiii!" he called out excitedly before flopping backwards onto the grass to watch the plane make its ascent upwards. We all kept our eyes fixed on the aircraft until it got lost in a plume of white.
The sound of Dylan squealing and the aeroplanes engine was suddenly no more. The field was silent and the sun was setting.
James let out a contented sigh and lay back on the grass, hoping to catch a few seconds of silence or perhaps if he was lucky, a few minutes snooze. I smirked as Dylan suddenly sat bolt upright. That wasn't going to happen with him around.
"Home now." He commanded to James, standing up before squinting his eyes and giving him a smile. "Please. Thank you."
Once again, James was completely unbothered by the sudden change of pace and smiled back at his grandson, brushing the grass off their jackets.
"You got it, buddy."
James had a quick stretch before Dylan suddenly lunged on his back, clinging onto him in a piggy back position. I assumed this would make James jump but I was completely wrong. This must have been their thing.
And so, the three of us made our way home, Dylan hugging onto his grandfather's back and me trotting close behind them.
James brushed the hair out of his eyes and peered behind him to look at his grandson.
"You're getting pretty big, Dylan, I don't think I'm going to be able to keep this up much longer."
Dylan took a minute but soon enough sensed James was joking and he let out a hearty laugh before squinting at him.
"Nuh uh! You're shrinking James, you're shrinking!"
James returned his grandson's joyful expression with his own beam before deciding to sprint home to give Dylan yet another laugh. And he did. Dylan let one hand go from around James' next and patted his back in his own way of clapping. And boy, did he squeal!
I giggled to myself breathlessly as I sprinted on home after them.
Dylan may have thought James was shrinking but his heart certainly wasn't. Right from the days when I first knew the lavender haired man in Team Rocket, I knew he had a good heart. I had watched this man grow into himself and grow into a relationship, marriage and fatherhood. Watching him with Dylan was one of the biggest blessings of all. He didn't look at him any different from any of his other grandchildren. He looked at Dylan for what he was. A sweet, funny and intelligent person. James may have done some bad things in the past but like any decent person, he was able to get past any of the labels his grandson had. And we loved him for that. And we loved Dylan too.
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I enjoyed the challenge of writing closely about a new character and making him an interesting and likable character despite having the labels that he has. I also based James and Dylan's relationship on Arnie and Gilbert from What's Eating Gilbert Grape and look forward to exploring more into their relationship and Dylan's personality himself in the future :3 Thanks again and I'll be back next Wednesday. See you then!
