Hello :P I was a little stumped of what to upload today so showed mum my list of ones I have to upload and she said this title stood out so she wanted me to upload this one. It's a little sad and angsty and about James and Baby Rey during the time of Misty being in a deep sleep and Ash having run away. I wrote about it in PS: I Miss You a few months back. I hope you enjoy :3
Disclaimer: I own the story and little Rey with AAML-TAML :P
It was a beautiful day in Kanto and there was not a cloud in the sky. The chirpy bird Pokémon were singing their cheerful songs and the sun was beating down in through the window. Nature was showing its glory to contrast the gloom that had befallen our family. It was ten days later and Misty still hadn't managed to fully wake from her slumber. It was getting harder than ever but Ash still didn't return to us. Everything we knew and loved was falling apart. It was hard to sustain the hope but we just had to do it.
I glanced over to where James was sitting on the bed next to his unconscious best friend, his hand linked to hers as he spoke softly to her. I sighed sadly. Yes that man had done wrong in the past but he changed his life around many years ago. He didn't deserve any of this. It was killing him seeing his best friend in this state. He too was slowly dying.
The lavender haired male managed a smile as he slowly reached forward and brushed her bangs out of her eyes, careful not to disturb her breathing tubes. After that he took Misty's hand back in his and stroked it gently before going back to talking to her.
"Everything is going okay I guess for my family but of course we all miss you…" he swallowed, not wanting to dwell on the pain and trying to bring light in the hope she would wake. "Obviously I've had to quite work but I've been drawing a lot. I've got a lot of ideas. You always did give me them…"
A lump grew in my throat as James trailed off, realising his words sounded like Misty had passed on. His usually piercing green orbs had been dull for days and now they were pricking with slight tears. He let out a shaky breath before continuing.
"Delia's doing alright. I don't know if you've been able to smell but she's been bringing in food for me and to also tempt you. Everyone's been great. They want you to wake up. If you can."
I watched as James squeezed his eyes tight shut and moved his hand away from Misty's to rub his forehead. He was in great pain. He wanted more than ever to produce light hearted and funny conversation for his best friend but he just couldn't. How could he when one of the people he cherished most was barely clinging onto life? How could he when he was terrified she would leave him? How could he when he had been living in a hospital for days, barely sleeping and not seeing his own family? He couldn't.
I watched him inwardly curse himself but I thought he was being stronger than I ever could be. When he took her hand in his once again and stroked her thumb shakily, I jumped from the window sill and carefully on the bed. I perched myself on Misty's legs and near to James.
He let out a quiet and choked back sob as he held her hands in his and held them near to his face; his eyes still squeezed tight shut.
"I just want you to wake up. I just want Ash to come back and help me. I want to be able to help you. I want so many things but they're just not happening. I want to be strong but I can't be. I want everything to go back to normal…" he trailed off, his lip trembling as a tear slid down his cheek and splashed on the leg of his jean. "I-I want my best friend…"
As soon as he said these words and just as another tear slid down his opposite cheek, the sound of quiet whimpering filled the air. James carefully placed Misty's hands back by her sides and wiped his eyes before he and I turned around. Sighing shakily, we stood up and made our way over to the little hospital crib where Ash and Misty's newborn baby daughter had been sleeping.
James swallowed his tears as he reached into the cot and picked up the infant in his arms, holding her out in front of his face.
"Y-Yeah, thanks daring… I want Ash or Misty to be able to look after you too…"
I chewed my lip sadly and went to curl up on Misty's chest in my own attempt to wake her up. At the mention of her sleeping mother, the little girl's cries grew louder. James sighed sadly and tucked her in the crook of her arm, beginning to rock her.
"Shhh, it's okay, it's okay…" he whispered soothingly to the infant before lifting her to his chest and resting her delicate and wobbly head against his shoulder.
It impressed me how he could even say the words 'it's okay' in such a dismal time of his life. Even if they were to a newborn baby. James was clearly a very strong individual.
"Things will get better soon, I promise you…" he mumbled into the infant's pink and curly ear, glancing up at the ceiling with eyes filled with tears and hope as he said these words.
Carefully, he made his way over to the window, still holding the baby girl close and rocking her in a paternal way. The little girl had an unusual reaction when her little baby eye's saw the sun and she could feel its warmth. She simply adored it and seemed to quieten whenever she was walked by the window.
James perched himself on the chair by the window and placed the baby on his legs, guarding her sensitive face from the sun but just so it bounced gently on her tiny toes.
After a few minutes in the sun, her newborn mouth curled into a small smile.
"Unbelievable…" James mumbled to himself and glanced at me to make sure I was watching and I was. The older male was absolutely right; she was unbelievable. She was not even two weeks old yet and she had already smiled many times. The passing doctors and nurses said it was simply a reaction to typical baby wind but James and I and our family that had come to visit believed otherwise. She was already a baby of unbelievable positivity and strength.
James smiled at the newborn before mumbling to her and reaching across to the coffee table.
"I need to update your little diary and mention that you had a little cry at 2:35 but we're now sitting together in the sun."
The little baby continued smiling as James spoke but soon frowned and let out a wail as he moved forward in an attempt to grab the notebook. The male let out one of the first proper quiet laughs in a while and moved back when he realised he was completely shading the little girl.
"Sorry, sorry…" he murmured, leaning back and playing with her tiny feet with his big hands. "I'll write that in later so you can get your sunshine."
At the gentle male's comforting tone and the feeling of security as he reached to cup her head, the little girl showed off yet another smile.
James' eyes filled with love and his mouth curled into his own smile as he looked down at the darling girl.
"Wow, baby…" he breathed out, his fingers softly stroking her dark chestnut coloured hair. "You really are a ray of sunshine, aren't you?"
I just smiled at these words and nuzzled back into Misty's chest but they seemed to make the lavender haired male stop slightly and his heart rate speed up.
"Little ray of sunshine…" he mumbled to himself before stroking the baby's hand, causing her to tightly clasp her fist around his finger. "Baby Rey…"
I was too busy trying to wake up Misty in my own way to really understand what he was getting at but James smiled down at her, his eyes full of love.
"You're such a sunny baby, Rey. You're a Rey of Sunshine."
I was finally listening to what James was saying and my heart clenched slightly. James had just secretly named the little girl. It was such a beautiful name and had a wonderful reason behind it. I worried in case that meant he was too attached to her and loved him as his own. He had every right to love her and give her a pet name but I just didn't want him to end up hurt out of his own kindness. That had happened many times before.
I felt bad when James' quiet and rare for this occasion happy laughs vanished and his forehead creased between his eyebrows with a frown. He sighed quietly, giving the baby a sad smile instead.
"I suppose you're not going to actually be named that in the end, are you?" he breathed out sadly but he and I shared the same small smile when she tilted her head on one side, clearly listening. "That doesn't matter. You'll always be a Rey of sunshine to Uncle James."
I smiled at these words but he soon trailed off once again, his green orbs laced with thoughtfulness.
"That is… If I get to be your Uncle…" he mumbled to himself, stroking the baby's fist that was still clasped around his finger. "Before Misty fell asleep, she asked me to look after you. I don't really know what I will be to you if she doesn't wake up…"
Upon hearing these words, the little baby's brow furrowed and she stuck her tongue out. James laughed quietly at this and nodded, taking hold of both her hands.
"No, I should take a leaf out of your book, shouldn't I?" he smiled and asked the infant to which she replied by shutting her eyes happily and smiling. "You will be my Rey of Sunshine no matter what."
My own body was washed over with a wave of positivity at that moment in time and it was right to. All of James' fears and questions that day didn't end up happening. Ash came back. Misty woke up. They were grateful to James for taking such wonderful care of their little girl and respected how hard it was to give her up when the time came. They honoured him by keeping Baby Rey's name. She truly was a Rey of Sunshine and she would always shine down and fill her loved ones with warmth.
The End.
There you go! Thanks a lot for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I love how caring and sensitive James is so I enjoyed writing about that and showing how kind and loving he is towards the people around him. Even if it was a bit sad to write, I love getting deep with the characters. And especially with the boys and James. It was also fun to come up with the moment that James came up with little Rey's name. It's definitely a special one :3 Thanks again and I will be back on the 28th with PS: I Miss You so see you then!
