Hello :P It is Halloween so I said I'd be back with an extra update. I'm a little excited about this because the plot is an idea that came completely from my brain rather than influenced by a movie/book and it deals with some emotions for Katie and interests that are close to my heart. I hope you enjoy!
Ages:
Jayden: 15
Ben: 12
Katie: 12
Ash: 32
Disclaimer: I own the story but obviously the characters Jayden and Katie dress up as belong to Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland :3
I held onto Ben's ear from sitting on his shoulder as the late October Kanto wind blew crisply and the orange and red leaves fell all around me. All three children knocked on the door in unison before taking a step back and breathing out excitedly. It wasn't long before the large wooden door swung open. They called out to the person standing in her doorway; their voices can't helping but be laced with excitement.
"Trick or treat!" they recited, clutching onto their buckets, and smiling with childish innocence up at the elderly lady who was already in her dressing gown.
She didn't hesitate to let out a hearty laugh and she beamed as she clasped her hands together over her chest, smiling warmly at the children.
"Oh how marvellous!" she exclaimed, taking her glasses out of her candy pink dressing gown and placing them on the end of her nose. "And who do we have here?" She mumbled before having a good, hard study.
I think it was fair to say that Ben was the most excited out of the trio of offspring and possessed the most childlike energy. He beamed and threw a pokeball in the air before showing off a pose much like his father would.
"I'm a Pokémon Master of course. And one day I will be exactly that." He bared his teeth into a grin as he gestured down to the outfit that his Uncle James had made especially for him before he nuzzled against me, his main Pokémon Pal for the night.
The elderly lady beamed even more upon hearing this before crossing her arms over her chest and bending down a little further to the short preteen.
"Is that so, little man? Well, with that determination I have no doubt you will be." She smiled at him before standing further up, tilting her head on one side. "But what I meant is who are you guys? I think I might recognise you all a little but I don't think you're from around here."
I smiled fondly to myself as the children all grinned sheepishly at one and other and shared secretive looks. You would think Halloween would get less special for them as they got older but in fact, it was completely the opposite. These children were quite well known because of their parents, despite the adult's efforts to protect them. Tonight was one of the few nights where they could dress up, knock on people's doors and just be kids. And they got candy for it too which was a bonus.
Jayden glanced at the woman from having his arm wrapped around Katie to keep her warm. He smiled charmingly at her and flicked his curls out of his eyes.
"We're not from around here, ma'am. We're from different towns. We probably look familiar to you because we've seen some other kids out here in similar costumes to ours."
I couldn't help but smirk to myself at the older teenager's polite charm mixed with the effortless ability to lie. He was definitely a chip off the Morgan block.
The elder lady furrowed her brow and continued thinking for a moment before suddenly shaking her head at herself and going back to beaming. As she picked up the orange bowl off the coffee table in the hall, she glanced at each and every one of the children, having another study. Her orbs behind her glasses stopped to look at Jayden.
"I can't imagine anybody else having the same costume as yours. It's very unique. But I know quite a bit and I have grandchildren a similar age to you, I think. I know who you are, Mr King of Hearts."
Jayden's mouth fell open upon hearing this but he soon smirked, flicking his curls out of his eyes once again as he gratefully took a handful of candy from the bowl.
"Well you're spot on. I was thinking people wouldn't get it but props to you for knowing my interpretation of an iconic female character."
The lady shook her head in amazement at the young teenager's vocabulary before giggling playfully and giving him a curtsy. She was about to glance in Katie's direction as when Ben continued putting his handful of candy into his bucket, his stomach let out a rumble.
The boy in the Pokémon Master costumes cheeks flushed but the lady in the doorway let out a hearty laugh. She clapped her hand to her chest before holding the bowl back out to him.
"Take some more, my boy, being one with Pokémon is hungry work it seems."
As Ben got over his embarrassment and grinned at her, reaching his hand into the bowl and almost clearing it clean, the lady smiled gently at Katie. She put the bowl back inside her house before hugging herself as she stood happily in the doorway.
"And you're Alice, aren't you my love? The blue suits you wonderfully and I don't think I've ever seen a red headed one before."
Katie ducked her head and blushed shyly at this while Jayden beamed proudly and Ben secretly had a nibble of the contents of his bucket. The lady wasn't put off by her shyness and continued smiling warmly at the preteen female.
"I'm so happy that this generation still appreciates that masterpiece. It was my favourite book when I was your age. Have you read it?"
Ben looked over at his twin sister from licking a bar of chocolate while Jayden stood closer to her. He didn't say anything but I could see he was studying silently with those green eyes of his.
Katie just smiled up at the lady and nodded her head. The elder female still didn't get put off as she reached into the candy bowl and took out a boiled sweet for herself.
"I'm very glad you've read it. It's wonderful how one writer's work and vision has connected people of all ages for the past over a hundred years. Is Alice your favourite character?"
Ben was no longer eating and he too was watching his sister along with Jayden. Katie could feel all eyes were on her and I knew she was starting to blush. She swallowed and hesitated before opening her mouth, finally speaking.
"I… I really enjoyed the book." She started off with a stutter which made her cringe but she continued despite flushing. "M-My Uncle James first r-read it to me when I was tiny. I love… I love… I love-"
Jayden furrowed and wrapped an arm around Katie, pretending to do it because he was shivering himself. He didn't have a chance to open his mouth as Ben stepped in, smiling casually at the older female.
"She loves Alice a lot and she and our Uncle still read it together and do the different voices together. She likes him doing the Mad Hatter. She has a poster in her bedroom that Jayden drew of her as Alice meeting Abolsem the Caterpie. She loves that too."
The elderly lady didn't think anything of Ben speaking for his twin sister but I could see Jayden furrowing his brow. The conversation went on for a few more moments with Katie stuttering and Ben answering questions for her here and there. It seemed like the conversation went perfectly fine for me but it was a lifetime for Jayden and also Katie.
After we had said our goodbyes and the lady had shut her door, we were walking back down the path. This was the moment that Jayden sighed and shook his head, dropping his bucket on the floor as he looked at the younger male.
"You were really unhelpful there, dude. You kept answering for her, she's not stupid."
Katie gasped with embarrassment upon hearing this and Ben blinked, his cheeks flushing with hurt. He soon furrowed his brow and dropped his own bucket.
"I know my sister isn't stupid thank you very much. And I was the one being helpful. I was answering for her when she couldn't get the words out."
The orange haired female grabbed hold of the pink and purple haired male's arm to try and distract him but he didn't react, still frowning at Ben.
"Exactly. I bet you made her feel really stupid."
Katie let go of Jayden's arm and hugged her own arms around herself, flushing when all eyes were on her.
"C'mon guys, please…" she mumbled in a mortified way, wanting to try and avoid answering but knowing that they were both stubborn and protective of her. "It… It did make me feel a bit s-s-stupid but I'm used to feeling s-stupid with my stutter. A-At least Ben knew the answers."
She breathed out when she had finally finished her words while Ben raised an eyebrow, looking competitively smug at Jayden when he heard his sister defending him. Jayden didn't even notice and furrowed his brow at Katie's words, gently resting a hand on her shoulder.
"Don't feel stupid because of your stutter. If you feel stupid it's Ben's fault for 'trying to help' but looking like a jackass who is trying to hurry his sister up."
Katie gasped in horror upon hearing the words that her secret crush had said to her twin brother. Ben gritted his teeth and squared up to Jayden, going on his tiptoes.
"You're the only jackass I see around here, Jayden. I can see what you're up to, hanging around younger girls to make yourself feel special. You're such a loser and like your dad, only friends with people younger than you because people your age see what a waste of space you are."
I gasped to myself in shock at Ben's words, holding onto his ear tighter as I looked down at him. Jayden barely reacted to these hurtful comments and shrugged while Katie's eyes pricked with tears, still hugging onto herself.
"P-Please stop. Y-You'll end up saying or doing something you'll regret."
The green eyed male shook his head and flicked his hair out of his eyes, standing at his full height and staring down at the raven haired male.
"The only thing I regret is letting your twin brother make a fool out of you."
Ben didn't see the upset and embarrassment in his sister's eyes as he stood further on his tiptoes, wrinkling his nose in disgust at Jayden.
"The only thing I'm going to regret is not punching you when I had the chance."
Katie let out a whimper as Ben took a step back before holding his fist out, getting ready to aim at the older male. She let out a stifled sob and didn't want to see anymore. I leaped onto her shoulder as she ran down the road, sprinting to where Ash was parked at the side of the road, waiting for them all to get back.
I breathed out shakily and held onto the shaking child as she ran. I knew the boys would be fine. Jayden would be able to take the hit from Ben or he would catch his fist in his hands. Ben was unlikely to get a punch back from Jayden. The only person I was worrying about was Katie. Dear sweet Katie. Dear sweet Katie who was shakily sobbing as she ran back to the car, cursing herself for her and what she considered flaws.
I saw my best friend blink with worry as he looked up from his phone as he saw Katie come running towards his car and make her way into the back seat. As she climbed in, she sniffed quickly and wiped all of her tears away. I climbed onto her lap and held onto her sadly.
Ash peered at his eldest daughter in the rear view mirror before turning around to look at her in the flesh. His chocolate brown orbs were filled with concern as he knew that his no longer not so little girl had been crying.
"Katie? Katie what's the matter? What happened?"
Katie gulped and rubbed her eyes roughly before shaking her head, tugging on the seat belt and wrapping it around us both. Her mouth twitched into a fake shaky smile as the belt clicked into place.
"N-Nothing. I got cold and wanted to call it a night. T-The guys wanted to continue. Let's just go home."
Ash frowned and glanced at me but I didn't want to give anything away unless she wanted me to. The raven haired male breathed out and held tighter onto the seat next to him, studying his daughter's face. He was usually dense but he wasn't blind. He knew she was upset. He knew she had been crying. He wanted to fix it. He wanted to fix it so badly.
"Katie…" he said gently, causing Katie's eyes to fill with more tears. She sniffed and looked at him desperately, her whole body shivering and shaking.
"Dad just please take me home. P-P-Please dad. I don't want to do this anymore."
The preteen girl most likely meant she didn't want to trick or treat anymore but Ash's heart leaped with fear and his eyes pricked with concerned tears. He took a deep breath and swallowed, looking at her.
"Talk to me, baby." He mumbled softly, reaching out to her but not touching her, just showing he was there for her with his hand and eyes. "Talk to me."
Katie let out a stifled sob and she shook her head, resisting for a few more minutes. Normally she would speak to her Uncle James about these things or perhaps her mother but she just needed to get it out. Soon she was telling her father how her stutter made her feel and how much of a fool she felt. She told him everything and not just about the fight between Jayden and Ben. Ash breathed out and listened to it all. He listened to each and every word. When she was finished, he knew he had to focus on helping her with one thing at a time. He started by fixing tonight.
"Katie…" he said her name softly before running a hand through his thick locks, looking at his daughter. "It's normal that Ben and Jayden would fight over you. They both care about you very much…" Ash trailed off, his teeth gritting slightly and I knew it was protectiveness that he was concerned Jayden had a crush on his daughter. I shot him a glance and my best friend soon breathed out, rubbing his forehead and focusing on the real issue.
"I know that Ben would never purposely do anything to hurt anybody, let alone you. He was just trying to help you and if he embarrassed you, that was never his intention.
Katie sniffed and wiped her nose on her arm before they went around herself, hugging herself for comfort and warmth.
"I-I don't think you'd be saying that if it was Jayden who was s-speaking for me and Ben who had a problem with it."
Ash furrowed his brow and shook his head at this but I remained silent, shrugging to myself. He had a point. It wasn't my intention but Ash saw this and he narrowed his eyes at me before going back to Katie.
"I don't know. It doesn't matter. Either way you have a lot of people caring about you and that's why they get into fights. It's not your fault. The situation might have been avoided if Ben kept quiet or Jayden didn't have a problem but it's too late now. It's happened."
A tear dribbled down Katie's cheek as she sniffed to herself and mumbled sadly.
"It happened because of my stupid stutter. None of this would have happened if I didn't have this f-fat s-stinking f-flaw." She buried her head in her hands and cried quietly to herself, causing Ash and I's hearts to shatter.
My best friend's hand went to his chest and he rubbed it, his eyes filled with sadness at his little girl breaking in front of his very own eyes.
"Oh Katie, don't say that. Nobody is perfect. Everybody has stuff they would change about themselves but most of the times; the things we'd change about ourselves are the things that the people we love want us to keep forever. The things that make us human make us beautiful to the people with the right eyes and heart."
I was proud of my best friend and I for one found his words touching but they didn't quite do the trick. Ash breathed out, close to defeat when he saw his daughter wipe her hands on her dress. He got an idea as she rested her arm on the side of the window and her chin in her hand.
"Hey Katie, what would Alice do?"
The orange haired female in the famous blue costume blinked upon hearing this, her eyes full of exhaustion and pain as she wasn't sure what her father had said or what he meant. Ash's eyes were full of determination and a spark. He smiled at his little girl.
"I know I don't really know too much about these books and movies you like, that's really you and your Uncle's thing." He rambled on but lucky for him, this was getting Katie's attention more. While I mockingly pretended to look at my watch, Ash continued looking at Katie and continued his words.
"I know that Alice would show emotion because that's perfectly normal. And she would be upset her loved ones are fighting. But she would use it to her advantage. Katie, you have what you call a flaw but what everyone else views as a part of you. Either way, it doesn't matter what it is. You have a stutter and if you want to overcome it, you will be able to. You just need to get in the right mind-set. You need to get in the mind-set of Alice. She would take what she has and run with it. She would learn from it. She would slay it. She would wear her scars with pride. You can do the same; I know you can, Katie."
The orange haired female thought hard and to herself about her father's words but soon enough she nodded and offered him a small smile. Though her eyes were exhausted from what she just went through, they sparkled at the love that her father had just tried to get through to her with something he knew nothing about but meant a lot to her. She breathed out and nodded once again.
"I can slay this stutter. It's not impossible. I'm like you, I don't believe in that word."
When Ash beamed at his daughter with pride and nodded his head, Katie cuddled tiredly into the backseat before nodding her head once again, looking playfully at her father.
"Take me back home, dad. I'm beginning to think this car is Wonderland. In this car you're smart. And that's completely upside down."
I laughed from cuddling into Katie's belly and Ash pretended to gasp with hurt but he couldn't help but laugh himself, just happy that he had been able to help out his daughter. From that day on, thanks to her father this time, she had a new mind-set. Things got quite a lot worse before they got better but that didn't matter.
Even if her mind forgot her father's words when it was crazily hazy with fear, her heart didn't for even a second. They would always be in there for her to call on, whenever she needed. Just like he and so many people would be there for her, for as long as she needed us and for as long as she felt that she was flawed. We were happy to help her because we saw her as something completely different. To her, she viewed herself as a child that stuck out like a sore thumb and with a stutter as a flaw. But to us, if by any chance she had been written in a book, she would have been one of the strongest and most worthy characters to ever go down in history.
The End.
There you go! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 So yeah I recently came up with the idea that all things Alice in Wonderland come to mean a lot to Katie, even more so after having to deal with stutter therapy and feeling like an outsider. Like I mentioned, she shares that interest with Jayden and her Uncle James because he would read it to them and act it out with them when they were children. Ash doesn't know too much about it but in this chapter, Katie is touched by his effort to connect with her by using something she knows a lot about but he doesn't know too much about. That kinda reminds me of me and my dad. While I don't suffer with a stutter like she had to, I know how it feels to feel flawed and an outsider so I feel close to her :3 Thanks again for reading and I hope you enjoyed this kinda personal view into how I view the offspring of the gang. See you on Wednesday with Pikachu Tales for the first chapter of PokeShipping Week (or PokeShipping Month for me)!
