Hello :P It is Wednesday and I am back with a new chapter. This one is pretty light and just sweet. It involves Lynne, her infant daughter with James, Jorgie and James' Grandfather who appears in the anime, Noah. I'm quite fond of his character and his interaction with Lynne so I hope you all enjoy :3
Ages:
Lynne: 30
Jorgie: Two Months Old
Noah: 86
Disclaimer: I own the story and the OCs :3
The orange haired woman bit her lip as her infant daughter with the equal shade of orange hair as her took a deep breath before continuing her session of wailing. Her little fists waved with discontentment while her mother held her to her chest to try and sooth her; her green orbs squeezed tightly shut. I looked at Lynne and she looked at me. She looked desperate. I swallowed. But I shook my head. I didn't know what to do either.
Jorgie was normally such a little content baby girl. As her father said, she was a cherub, and she always looked so peaceful and wise. She only ever really cried if she needed feeding or changing. She'd whimper for attention from James. But that was never really a proper cry. More like little displeased yowls like that of a kitten.
Most of the time, she'd happy lie on her back on her quilted blanket for hours, just watching the world go by. But clearly, that day wasn't one of those days. Her new little face was scrunched right up as she made noises. And they definitely weren't little cat like yowls. They were unhappy wails.
Hearing the little girl's cries grow louder when she was pressed against her mother's chest, Lynne noticed that she wasn't grabbing at her with her fists like she needed feeding. So she tried something else. She held Jorgie in front of her face and tried bouncing her up and down. Lynne's expression was pitiful but also adorable.
"Come on now, little one, let's stop that crying now, huh?" she asked her daughter, her own face scrunched up as she tried to smile but you could tell she was almost near to tears. She took a brave breath and continued bouncing her gently, holding her under her armpits. "There's really no need for such noise."
But as if Jorgie was highly disagreeing with her mother, she opened her eyes to look at her with the green orbs she got from her father. She seemed to tilt her head on one side to ask 'is that so?'. And then she opened her mouth once again. Her tongue curled as she let out an even louder wail.
I looked over at Lynne as she let out her own whimper and her forehead creased with confusion.
"Oh come on, Jorgie!" she cried out in exasperation but it was still in her peaceful and gentle tone as she moved the little girl from in front of her face and cradled her in the crook of her arm instead. The orange haired baby grunted up at her. Lynne's head turned towards the house phone, resuming biting her lip. "I phoned your daddy half an hour ago now. He's stuck in a meeting. But he said he'd send the next best thing to help."
I watched the mother talk to the baby and as soon as the two month old heard the word 'daddy', her wails seemed to stop briefly and she took the time to have an intake of breath. But she also seemed to notice our hopeful expressions and she heard the rest of her mother's words. He's stuck in a meeting. She clenched her fists and protested louder.
My own brow furrowed sympathetically as when Jorgie continued her pitiful crying, Lynne's expression of trying to hold it all together became even more desperate. I moved nearer to them but there was really nothing that I could do. I had tried
I had waved my tail for the little girl. I had tried to tunefully coo at her. I had even pulled my most adorable faces. But each time, she looked at me as if to say 'come back when you look more like my daddy'.
I tried my best to keep my pride in check but I couldn't help but feel wounded when all of my usual cheering up tactics failed on the little Morgan-Williams. They had almost always succeeded on all of the Ketchum babies, especially little James. But then again, maybe it was their Ketchum side that made them easily cheered up. Jorgie had no Ketchum in her. She was a Williams and she was a Morgan. I might have had to think back on how I helped cheer up the last Morgan baby.
But before I could get any ideas and before Lynne could try offering another feed to her little daughter, a knock on the door could be heard. Though the little girl continued whining, the orange haired woman inhaled a breath of hope.
"Oh!" she exclaimed as she began making her way to answer the door, holding Jorgie close to her chest still and almost tripping over the hem of her dress in her haste. She informed both her daughter and I. "James said he'll send the next best thing. That must be them!"
I sat on the window sill to get slightly away from the crying, my ears twitching and my head tilted on one side. The next best thing after James, eh? As Lynne and I briefly shared a look and both assumed it was the same person, Jorgie took a second break from crying. She then sneezed, doubting anyone was as good as her father, before she continued yowling again.
Lynne let out an exhausted sigh as her daughter didn't relent but she brushed her hair from her eyes and dabbed her forehead. She put on a smile as she answered the door. She didn't want to scare the young Morgan. But when the door swung open in her hand, it was apparent that it wasn't the young Morgan.
It was, dare I say it – the old Morgan. And Lynne blinked for once when he stood at the other side of the door from her.
"Oh." She mumbled innocently, ignoring her daughter's sniffles as her ocean blue orbs looked confused at the face she was seeing in front of her. "I thought that Justin was on his way."
Standing on the other side of the door from Lynne, James' grandfather blinked back when he saw her expression but he soon shrugged, his fingers moving to stroke down his moustache. He told her truthfully.
"No, my wife got a phone call from young James and she told me to get here as soon as possible." He informed her, trying not to look too concerned when he saw how frantic she looked from behind the eyes. But he soon offered her a smile. "It's nothing too serious I hope, doll?"
I couldn't help but laugh inwardly at how Lynne and I had both assumed that the next thing to James would be his eldest son, Justin. But instead, we got Noah in his casual trousers and braces from pottering around in the garden at home with Josie.
I wondered if the old man was up to the task while Lynne's expression suddenly brightened. She needed help, she was desperate for it. And she had always had a soft spot for her James' grandfather. So she was equally delighted that he turned up instead of Justin. In fact, she might have been even more pleased that it was Noah.
She shook her head to relax him that it wasn't an emergency emergency and she stepped aside so he could enter the house. She briefly glanced down at her daughter in the process, not noticing at that point that she had stopped crying for attention. She waved her hand dismissively.
"Oh no, it's nothing too urgent. It's just that-"
Lynne stopped and blinked her ocean blue orbs again. She finally realised that her daughter was being silent and she tilted her head down to smile at her. Jorgie's eyes were open too. They were looking up at her mother. When the orange haired woman beamed and bit her lip, the infant's eyes seemed to widen.
She looked thoughtful. She remembered that smile. James always made Lynne smile like that. Her daddy always made her mommy smile like that.
Suddenly, Jorgie's bottom lip began to tremble again. She remembered her daddy. She remembered that she was missing her daddy. Her cheeks flushed as she took a sharp intake of breath so she could scream even louder that time.
For once, Lynne looked as if she was about to rip her own hair out.
"That!" she exclaimed exhaustedly, causing Noah to flinch slightly as the ginger haired female's voice changed to almost snappy on a rare occasion. She rubbed her forehead as the tears poured out of Jorgie's eyes. "That is the problem. She won't stop crying!"
Noah blinked, looking between Lynne and Jorgie. He glanced at me when he caught my eye before looking between the two females. Because he hadn't been in a house with the little girl who was crying for hours on end, he didn't seem affected. He just folded his arms as he leaned closer to his great-grandchild to inspect her face.
"Well well, then." He began, his brow furrowing and his fingers moving to stroke his moustache thoughtfully as he watched the baby girl sob. As he leaned backwards to a standing position, he couldn't help but give Lynne an airy and amused half-smile. "I haven't seen a face that unhappy since I told Charlie that he couldn't ride his horse to school."
I looked over at Noah and raised an eyebrow. Jorgie drew another breath and seemed to raise her own eyebrow at the older man. Lynne blinked but she soon couldn't help but giggle as she resumed rocking her daughter gently. She let out a fond breath.
She really did like James' grandfather. Aside from being so much like his grandson, he had an air of collectiveness to his character. Like he always knew what to do. And he had a wit about him as well. After being in a room with Jorgie crying for hours, Lynne found it refreshing. He really was the next best thing to James.
Noah leaned forward again and reached his finger out to stroke the little girl's cheek, causing her head to turn and her to cry even harder. The old man recoiled gently and pulled a face, shrugging.
"So I'm guessing Josie sent me here because y'all needed help with calming down this little one?" he asked, causing Lynne to bite her lip and nod in response. Noah glanced between her and the little girl's displeased face before continuing. He took a sheepish step back. "Well, I'm not sure I'm the best thing for that, doll. You know what she's like around me."
While Jorgie grunted at the words of the older man, I couldn't help but giggle and nod my head. I remembered. Like I said before, the little girl was one of the most content infants on the planet. She loved being cuddled up with her dad. She loved playing peek-a-boo with her mother. She loved seeing the array of different hair colours belonging to her siblings. She loved being entertained by little James Ketchum. She loved being picked up by everyone, really. That was, except by Noah. She had just always fussed when he did it and James and Lynne had yet to figure out why.
Upon hearing the old man's words and exhaustion from being a new mom, Lynne's blue orbs seemed to glisten with tears. She sniffed quietly as she continued attempting to rock Jorgie.
"I think she just hasn't seen a moustache before." She told the grey haired male innocently and desperately, looking down at her daughter when she seemed to nod in agreement. She shrugged helplessly. "I don't think I can ask you to shave it off."
Lynne was so confused by her little girl's noise that she didn't hear the funny side of her words so she blinked again when Noah chuckled. But he soon shrugged it off, smiling earnestly at his grandson's girlfriend. He held his hands out and accepted Jorgie in his arms, holding her even when she thrashed about mildly.
"You sit down doll, we'll get this little thing quietened." He told her with a nod of the head, gesturing with his other hand for Lynne to take a seat on the sofa. When she did so, his hand quickly went back so both hands were holding the little girl. She was shaking her head so much that if he had held her with one just a second longer, the old man might have dropped her.
Lynne breathed out and tried not to worry too much as she sat down on the sofa with me and smoothed her dress down with her fingers. I noticed her occupying her hands now that they were empty with her daughter so I jumped onto her lap so she could have something to fuss. I smiled contentedly when she automatically stroked my fur.
Noah switched Jorgie in his arms so he was holding her against his chest and began gently walking her around the room in front of Lynne. His footsteps were rhythmically and surprisingly strong for a man of his age. He stroked the back of her hair gently.
"You sure do have impressive lungs don't you, little one?" the grey haired man murmured to the little girl, continuing to walk her around the room as he held her in one sturdy arm. She seemed to grunt against his braces as if to tell him that she didn't need buttering up. He continued. "But you don't have to show them off all the time, y'know."
Lynne remained looking at James' grandfather walking her daughter around the room, her eyes full of hope. Her hand was stopped mid-air above my fur. She seemed to be holding her breath. Because she was pinning almost all of her hope on Noah soothing her little girl, she looked as though she was about to crumple and cry when Jorgie whimpered again. Noah's brow furrowed.
"Oh!" Lynne almost whined out herself, pushing her hair from her eyes and sitting on the edge of the sofa. Her arms almost reached out to the green orbed baby again. She shook her head in confusion. "I just don't know what's got into her. I can normally handle the noise – I dealt with Misty as a baby for goodness sake! But I can't handle her little sad face."
After giggling to myself at the mention of my best friend's wife, my head tilted towards little Jorgie. Noah was holding her out in front of his face and so she was lying on his forearms. I caught sight of the sad little face that Lynne was referring too and couldn't help but pout myself.
She really did look so forlorn indeed. That was most definitely not like the little girl. She was in a bad mood. And I didn't tell Lynne, but I wasn't sure if there was anything that could cheer her up other than her father returning home.
Noah hugged Jorgie back to his chest as she continued wailing and he was determined not to give up. He cradled her head softly in his wrinkled hand.
"You just miss your daddy, don't you, dolly?" he asked her, causing the little girl to seemingly hiccup in agreement with his words. After Noah chuckled and nodded his head, he kissed her head and carried her nearer to her mother on the sofa. "Well maybe you don't like me and my 'tache very much but one thing I do know is a lot about your father. And I'm sure y'all would like to hear one of my stories 'bout him?"
Lynne assumed the older man was talking to her and despite her worried feelings for her little girl; she couldn't help but nod her head eagerly. Noah chuckled more and smiled softly upon hearing this and he slowly lowered himself to sit down on the sofa. He kept Jorgie against his chest.
"Very well." He mumbled, pushing his grey hair from his eyes before feeling the difference between his locks and his great-granddaughters feathery ones. He then turned to Lynne and smiled politely at her. "Another skill I must admit to having is I do have the knack of swaddling down pretty good. Would you mind fetching a blanket for me?"
I watched as like when she was unknowingly answering the door to him, Lynne got up for the older male and almost tripped up rushing to fetch her daughter's blanket for him. I shook my head fondly. She was just so grateful that he was present and helping her out that she was quick to do anything for him.
After coming back and handing the blanket that Josie had hand-knitted herself for her little great granddaughter, the orange haired female went to the kitchen to make both adults a drink. I smiled over at her before watching Noah swaddle the little girl like he said.
She continued whimpering quietly and he mumbled to himself what he was doing as he swaddled her. He placed one corner of the blanket over one of her shoulders. He placed the other corner of the blanket over the other of her shoulder. Then he lifted the remaining bottom flap to cover her body before wrapping it around her. He made sure her hands were gently inside before picking her back up again and cradling her to his chest.
Lynne melted at the sight as she returned with both of their tea and I couldn't help but smile at her smile. She had known she was going to have a daughter with James. She knew that she would be lucky enough to see sweet moments like that coming from him. But it hadn't twigged that she'd witness James' grandfather being equally as soft with the little girl.
As she sat down, she nodded her head to herself. I knew what she was thinking. She believed that Morgan's were some of the sweetest people ever.
Noah gave Lynne a gentle smile when she came back to join them and pulled Jorgie closer to his chest when he felt the orange haired woman nudging closer to him, her tea in her hand. He looked at her shyly but he soon cleared his throat and looked down at the little girl. She was finally quiet but her face still looked rather moody.
"So I promised a story about your daddy then, huh?" he asked the little girl and, once again, Lynne answered by nodding her head. Noah chuckled fondly once again but nodded his head too. His other hand went to stroke his moustache. "I better deliver on that then."
I snuggled back up close to Lynne's side as she moved even closer to James' grandfather while she listened to the tale coming from the old man. Jorgie's ears seemed to prick and so did mine. Lynne rested her head on her knees, entranced as she listened hard.
We heard about how James' love for bottlecaps came from how he and Josie would bury them for him to find when he was a very little boy. Ever since that day, he had declared them as treasure. And when he got older, he wanted to collect them all.
We heard about how he had gone missing for half a morning while staying over at theirs for the summer before appearing after lunch in all of his grandmother's jewellery. Noah promised to show us all a photo of that occasion.
And last but not least, we heard about the Pokémon that James would help nurture back to health along with his grandparents every summer. Lynne's eyes shone with each story.
"So I think that's what got your daddy got so paternal." Noah finished by telling the little girl, his finger gently stroking her cheek as he spoke to her. Lynne listened attentively. "Aside from it just being who he is, he loved seeing Pokémon leave our care better than they had arrived. And I know he loves that about his kids. He loves just watching them grow and watching them be."
Lynne let out a sigh of love and Noah glanced at her before looking down at Jorgie. He had been looking at the little girl the entire time but that was the first time he realised that she was sleeping away in his arm. He smiled softly.
"He'd definitely loving seeing you be and seeing you sleeping right now, little child." He told her fondly, gently leaning forward to press a kiss on the light pink patch of skin between her eyes. He then smiled at her again. "Sweet dreams."
The orange haired female continued holding her hand over her heart as her eyes watched Noah while he was too busy doting on her little girl. She didn't look away from him. She had heard many stories about James but she had also heard many about his grandfather. So many wonderful. So many not so wonderful coming from bitter people.
But all she saw was the man in front of her. He was loyal and he was authoritative and he had a heart of gold. And like his grandson, his heart shone for his family. So it was no wonder that she was so fond of him. She liked him for the person that he reminded her of and the person he was on his own.
When Noah felt his grandson's girl looking at him, he turned to give her a sheepish smile. His moustache quirked up gently as his eyes softened for her like they had for Jorgie.
"I told ya." He uttered gently and playfully and though he was bigging himself up, it was somehow said with no ego at all. He continued cheekily. "King of the swaddles, that's me."
Lynne giggled again and couldn't help but nod her head in agreement. She moved closer and offered Noah his tea but he declined for the time being, just wanting to hold the little girl in his arms. He looked down at her, shaking his head.
He couldn't believe it. He was so lucky. He had seen his own children like that. He had seen James like that. Then he had seen James' children with Jessie like that. And now he was seeing his child with Lynne like that. Each one was a sight to behold.
The orange haired woman found herself yawning gently after finishing her tea and slowly she moved closer to him. She cuddled against the sofa cushions and then she rested her cheek on his shoulder. Her hand then rested next to her daughter's body and she shut her eyes. She breathed out contentedly.
"Mr Noah…" she began, causing the older male to blush with fondness for her and his hand to rest innocently on her head. She smiled as she continued. She wrinkled her nose. "Tell me more about James." She smiled even more as she said the words, her mouth twitching upwards with hope.
And so, that's what Noah did. He held both the Morgan-Williams girls to his chest as he began to tell even more stories.
Lynne heard about the times that James ran away to his grandparents summer cottage and ended up staying with them for a few days. Lynne heard about when James was in Team Rocket and he needed his grandparents help to nurture his sweet poorly Chimecho. Lynne almost heard about the time that James went to his grandfather when he was first falling in love with her.
She would have liked to hear about that. Noah would have liked to tell it to her. But she began snoring gently on his shoulder, cuddled up as closely to him as her daughter was.
Noah would have liked to tell her more stories but he didn't have the time. So instead, he just pulled both the girls closer and smiled to himself. He was right that he had the knack for swaddling. He also had the knack for having enough stories to entertain, enlighten and to soothe. But as he looked over Jorgie and Lynne, he wasn't thinking about his own skills. He was thinking about his own luck.
James had always been uplifted by the thought of finally being a family with Lynne but the truth was, when Noah looked at her and Jorgie, he knew he felt the same way too. He had a family with Josie and a family because of the children that his grandson made. And even though he was getting older, his life was only just beginning. He had a new little creature in Jorgie to love. And he knew that when Lynne was around, she brightened every single life that she touched. Not just his grandson's. But his life too.
The End.
There you go! Thanks so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed :3 I wrote this because I simply just felt like writing about Noah one night. I had a blast making him interact with a moody Jorgie and adding his Southern dialect! Thanks again and I will be back on the 28th to update The Diary of Baby Rey so see you then!
