An: Good morning. I'm heading to Chicago today, so you are getting this nice and early. Y'all certainly had a lot to say about Jacob, and after today, I'm sure you will have a lot more to say. Thank you so so much for your amazing reviews. I appreciate them more than you will ever know. I'll let you get to it.

Thank you to my prereaders and my beta. Without them, this would not be possible.

Chapter 15

"Because of you

I never stray too far from the sidewalk

Because of you

I learned to play on the safe side, so I don't get hurt

Because of you

I find it hard to trust not only me, but everyone around me

Because of you

I am afraid."

"Because of You" by Kelly Clarkson

~oOo~

Edward closed the door as Emmett and Rose said their goodbyes. He found Bella by the hearth wrapped in a blanket with a full glass of wine in her hand, staring blankly into the fire. Millie was lying sideways in her lap.

"You still want me here, Bella? I can give you some space and go ho—"

Bella whipped her head toward him, her eyes sad and dull. "No, Edward. I want you here. It's time. I might as well rip off the whole Band-Aid. Go pour yourself a drink and come sit down."

"You want anything?"

"Nah, I'm good. Thanks. You might want to make a stiff one, just sayin'."

He eyed her as he walked to the bar cart. Grabbing a glass, he poured two fingers of bourbon. Right before he moved, he second-guessed his pour and added another finger for good measure. He had no idea what he was about to hear or how long he was going to be there. It all sounded so ominous, and Bella seemed far from herself. He had no idea what he was about to hear, but he knew by her demeanor it wasn't going to be good.

"I'm so sorry about dinner," she murmured when Edward came back into view.

"It's okay, shug. We'll go another time." Edward wasn't sure where he was supposed to sit until Bella moved her legs and invited him to sit beside her. She sat snuggled into the corner of the sofa, sitting cross-legged, angled toward him as he took his seat. Bella offered him a part of the blanket, laying it in his lap. He smiled at her kindness, lacing his fingers with hers and bringing her hand to his lips before placing their hands together in her lap.

Bella gave him a sad smile as she prepared herself to tell him about Jacob and answer all the lingering questions she knew Edward had.

"Please let me get this out, okay? It's embarrassing, and I thought it was well behind me. I'm not put out or unhappy that I'm not with him; it's purely the circumstances. It's a long story, but I promise I'm going to spare you all the nitty gritty details."

Edward nodded. A look of unwavering concern and caring was evident in his eyes. "I'm all yours, Bella." He squeezed her hand in support.

She squeezed back, taking a final sip of her wine and placing her glass down. "It started out as any fun, new, exciting relationship should. Jacob and I had a lot in common. We both played professional soccer, loved movies, cooking, reading, travel…you name it. He was way more established than I was. He'd been playing for the Sounders for years, as their marquee player. I was new to the area and had just signed my first professional contract with the Seattle OL Reign. I was nineteen. We met through friends; you know the drill. It was very easy in the beginning. We were happy. He introduced me around, had me meeting new people; it was exciting. The whole time it was training, playing soccer, and just being together." Bella paused and glanced at Edward, then took a deep breath and continued.

"Jacob's very intense, if you haven't noticed." She snorted. "In the beginning, it was quite appealing. He worked hard and he played hard. Everybody loved him. And as you heard tonight, he was very well connected. Like the soccer 'fucking' poster boy."

Edward sat quietly listening, holding Bella's hand as she continued to talk. He gripped his glass with his other hand; his tension rising with every word Bella spoke as she recalled the relationship. He hated thinking of her with that motherfucker, but he knew he had to stomach it in order to get to the events of tonight.

"Things started changing as I came into my own. Don't get me wrong, in the beginning, he was very supportive, almost too supportive. He treated me like a queen, so attentive and loving. It was very overwhelming for me. He loved being in the spotlight, and he took every opportunity to use it to further his agenda. He had a vision, and I fit perfectly into it. I became his protégée. I hated that word, but that was what they were saying. Before I knew it, I had moved in with him, and he had proposed."

Edward winced again at those words. Now that he had met Jacob, the idea that she had come so close to marriage with him was unsettling. He shifted a bit in his seat, but her hand remained in his grip.

"From the moment I moved in, my autonomy slowly slipped away, without me even realizing it. My world became very small. Jacob even alienated me from my family in some ways. He started to control everything in my life. And the whole time I just thought he was taking care of me, loving me. His friends became my friends, his agent became my agent, so Jacob always had his ear. His endorsements became my endorsements. The treatment I received was far beyond what most female soccer players get, especially a new one. Jealousy ran rampant in the soccer circles, and it was starting to show up on the field. I was becoming better known for being his fiancée than for being a soccer player in my own right. Something I had worked for, so damn hard, my entire life. All my credibility was taken away."

Bella's voice quavered. Just thinking of that time gave her knots in her stomach as she remembered how teammates and friends eventually treated her.

"I tried out for the Olympic soccer team, much to his chagrin, to prove to myself and others that I was worthy. Just making it was a dream come true. To hell with the fact that we didn't medal, I was just so damn proud to have my own accomplishment separate from him." Bella absentmindedly rubbed at the top of her hipbone where her tattoo lay. The movement did not go unnoticed by Edward. "He came to Rio, because I'll be damned if he didn't want to make a show of him being there. The ever-so-loyal fiancé." She rolled her eyes.

"Once we came back from Rio, things started to unravel. It took a while, but I noticed a slight crack in Jacob's personality, which eventually became a huge chasm. You see, he wanted to be like Messi. Jacob idolized him. He prided himself on being the American version of him. But he never achieved that level of greatness. As my star started to rise after Rio, his started to wane. He was plagued with injuries and insecurities. So, when I started doing things on my own, without him, whether it be endorsements, trips, events…he was paranoid. I'd finally come into my own and had the confidence to forge ahead. When I went out, he questioned my every move. 'Who are you going out with?' 'Where are you going?' The questions, the mistrust, and the jealousy were insane. He even put a tracking device on my car."

Edward's brows rose at the audacity of this motherfucker. "You're fuckin' kidding me."

Bella nodded. "Yeah, a mechanic found it when they were changing a flat tire one day. I wasn't worried; I never went anywhere different from where I said, but I was completely shaken by his underhandedness. I never once gave him a single thing to worry about, ever. I was faithful, and I thought…I thought he was, too." She removed her hand from Edward's and fidgeted with the blanket in her lap.

"Oh, Bella, I'm—"

"Nope! Don't say it." She held up her hand to halt him. "It was never confirmed. Just a feeling. Between the growing obsession he had with me cheating on him, some receipts I found, and some rumors I heard, I was definitely suspicious. It all kinda added up. I never had the guts to come right out and ask him. At that point, I found it easier to avoid hot-button topics."

"It all came to a head when he overheard me laughing on a phone call one day. He became so jealous and obsessed. He accused me of talking to my 'lover.'"

"Bella, get off the phone. Get off the phone," Jacob shouted.

"Jacob, please."

"Who are you talking to? Your lover?"

"Don't be so paranoid. It's getting old."

"So, I'm paranoid now. Is that it?"

"Can you hold, please?" She put her phone on mute and turned to Jake. "I'm on the phone with Cooper from Nike, if you must know."

"Oh, so your lover's name is Cooper?"

"Jacob, stop it. I don't have a lover."

"You don't? Well, these flowers that just arrived say differently. Are they from Cooper?"

"I have no idea." She grabbed the card out of the bouquet, silently praying they weren't from any man related to any of her endorsements.

"Read it…out loud." He sneered.

Bella's heart seized when she saw the name on the card. Good Lord, he would never believe her now. "Looking forward to a beautiful relationship. Fondly, Cooper."

Jacob's face burned with anger. He grabbed the phone out of her hands and threw it hard against the wall, splintering it into a million pieces. Bella screamed in shock.

She couldn't believe how volatile Jacob was. Bella had never seen him behave this way. She decided to maintain a level head, to keep her wits about her. However, her blood ran ice-cold when she saw an enraged look wash over his face.

"How long?" He seethed. The vein on his forehead protruded and throbbed.

"How long?" Bella's voice shook.

"How long have you been fucking him?" Jacob grabbed both her arms, squeezing them tightly as he slammed her into the wall, her head taking the brunt of it. "'Cause you sure as hell haven't been fucking me."

"Jacob, stop! Oh my God! Stop! You're hurting me." Bella fought him, but his grip was simply too tight. "I haven't! I swear."

"I don't fucking believe you."

"Jacob, please…please…I love you. Why would I cheat on you? We're happy, right?"

The look on Jacob's face filled her with fear. She'd never seen him so enraged. In a last ditch-effort to pacify him, Bella forced a smile on her trembling lips, expressing her love and adoration for him, even if she felt neither of those things. She'd do anything to get out of his grasp.

"I-I would never betray you like that. I c-care about you…" She barely got out the words.

But when Jacob searched her eyes for answers, he didn't find what he was looking for. "You fucking liar!" He reared his hand back and punched the wall beside her head.

Bella ducked and screamed as Jacob's fist made impact with the wall. She could hear his bones snapping and crunching beside her. He released the grip on her arm as he cried out in agony. She slid down the wall into a puddle on the floor, crying uncontrollably as she curled up in a ball. Meanwhile, Jacob was screaming, holding his hand. He knew he broke it, and of course, he blamed Bella.

Edward was speechless. The bourbon glass he had white-knuckled throughout her story was still half-full. With tears glistening in his eyes, he finished it in a single gulp, setting the empty glass on the coffee table. His wet eyes met hers. He couldn't quite put his finger on what he was feeling. Was it reverence, respect? Was it pride? Proud for how she got herself the hell out of there?

Realization dawned on him. Jacob was the man she referenced when they were in the mountains. The man who made her doubt herself and other people around her. Edward's anger was simmering on high, right along with hers.

"I can't believe…I'm so, so sorry you went through that hell, Bella. I can't even imagine—"

"Thanks," Bella interrupted. She couldn't handle hearing his pity. Not when she was finally feeling so strong and comfortable in her skin for the first time in years. This was not how she ever wanted him to view her. Weak. Vulnerable. Incapable. She cleared her throat and grabbed her wineglass off the table to have another sip.

Taking a calming breath, she continued. "I stupidly got myself into that situation; I had to find a way to get myself out, you know?"

Edward's eyes narrowed. "You weren't stupid, Bella. The motherfucker was trying to control you. That's not love. For him to raise a hand to you, to hurt you…fuck, Bella. If I had known that, I wouldn't have been able to restrain myself. Just hearing this makes me want to hunt that fucker down."

Edward attempted to stand, but Bella took his hand and stopped him. "Please. Don't you dare go out and hunt him down, Edward. Nothing good can come out of it. He will win if you do that. Trust me, it's exactly what he wants. I can get another restraining order, if I need to. He isn't worth you screwing up everything you've worked hard for. Please…let it go."

"For now…" Edward growled after he situated himself beside her again.

Bella eyed him for a minute, making sure he wasn't going to bolt and do something rash.

"Let me finish this, okay? He's already taken up so much air in this room, it's making me sick to my stomach all over again."

Edward nodded. "I'm sorry, shug. Go on."

"So I took him to the ER to have his hand checked out, knowing we would be a while. It was the only way I could devise a plan to get away from him. I knew that wouldn't be the last time he behaved that way. The writing on the wall was crystal clear."

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she paused. Edward reached out to hug her, but Bella rejected it, knowing the moment his arms were around her, she would crumble. She had made it this far, she just had a little more of the story to tell, then she could fall apart.

"It was so hard to keep up the facade of a caring fiancée, but I had to do it. Jacob kept apologizing over and over. Crying. Kissing me. It was awful. I just had to endure it for a while longer until an opportunity presented itself. I had to get the hell out of there. When they took him back for X-rays, I bolted. I called Rose absolutely hysterical on the way to the house. I packed up a bunch of my things and never looked back. My parents called a lawyer. We threatened him with a police report, knowing full well he wouldn't want the negative publicity."

"Shug…"

"I have pictures, you know?"

Edward's brows creased with anger.

"Of my arms. There were…there were bruises. You could see where each one of his fingers had wrapped around my arm. Rose still has them for safe keeping." Bella shivered at the thought of Jacob's hands on her.

Edward flinched. It made him sick to his stomach to know Jacob bruised and marked her. The anger building inside him superseded his nausea once he realized how close a call they'd had today with Jacob. He'd been standing in her front yard, flowers in his hand, ready to woo her once more. His behavior certainly lined up with everything Bella had said.

"Bella." His voice cracked. "You don't have to tell me anymore, really. Please don't relive this pain for me. I have a clear enough picture of who this asshole abuser is." He entwined their fingers. The pull to comfort her was strong, but he wasn't sure how well it would be received. She was a strong woman, and he didn't want her to interpret anything he did as pity. "I'm just so sorry this all had to come up."

Bella nodded, holding Edward's hand in hers. She wanted to finish; no, she needed to finish the story. Edward at least deserved to know she came out of this triumphant. That she took charge and never looked back. She wasn't some weak and pathetic young girl with stars in her eyes. She left that girl in Seattle.

"It's okay. I know it's a lot. But you deserve to know."

Edward bobbed his chin toward her to continue, his eyes never leaving hers.

Bella continued. "All in all, I got out okay. My parents and Rose came out and packed up my things. I couldn't step foot inside the house." She scoffed. "I fired my agent, hired a new one, and had them negotiate a trade for me. I needed to get out of Seattle, so they traded me to the Washington, DC Spirit, where I stayed until I received an offer to play here. I went to therapy, reconnected with my family, and found myself again. I never even knew I was lost until I looked back and saw how dysfunctional my life had become."

The crackling of the fire broke the tension that hovered in the room. "Jacob, I believe, went to therapy as well. At least that's what I heard through the grapevine. My leaving shattered him, and he had a difficult time coping. I had to tell my friends and teammates in Seattle that I didn't want updates. If they called or wanted to see me, his name was not to be mentioned."

She chewed her thumbnail as she paused. The tender look of concern on Edward's face almost broke her. She knew he had a big, caring heart, so this could not be an easy thing for him to hear.

"I just never expected him to make contact again after everything that happened, you know?" Bella huffed a sardonic laugh.

Unable to resist the feeling of her in his arms, Edward reached out and pulled her to him. "Of course, you didn't."

He kissed the top of her head, soaking her in. His fingers ran up and down her arms, relishing the silkiness of her skin. He felt protective; he couldn't help it. She wasn't yet his to claim, and after hearing her story, he wondered if she would ever allow herself to be his, if that was what he wanted. Who was he kidding? That was what he wanted. He felt ready, but she sounded far from it. Now, he understood her deal. The why, the how, and it pained him that this was what she knew of love. She deserved so much more.

"So, now you know all the sordid and ugly details of my life. I understand if it's too much, truly, Edward. I get it. It's a lot of baggage. And now with him here…" She sighed as she turned in his arms to face him, her eyes meeting his in the glow of the fire. "I'm sure you don't want to get your hands dirty."

Edward cupped her cheeks as his thumbs brushed away the tears that streamed down her face. "Bella, I can't imagine the fear and confusion you went through. I'm seriously at a loss for words. I don't even know what to say that doesn't include me wanting to hurt him as much as he hurt you. You didn't deserve any of that, shug. I'm just…I'm just so damn sorry he's shown back up on your doorstep."

Bella smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Thank you. That means more to me than you know. Actually, I'm really in a good place now. It's the rehashing that's so damn hard on me. It makes me feel weak and embarrassed that I didn't see it earlier. I was just so flipping young and naive. You couldn't tell me anything. I was completely swept off my feet, until I wasn't."

Edward pulled her into a comforting hug. As she nestled back into his arms, he ran his fingers through her hair, soothing her with each pass. His heart broke for her. He never wanted to see anyone break her down like this ever again. Not on his watch. Staring at the fire, he came to a few conclusions. He knew Bella wasn't ready to hear them quite yet, and actually, he wasn't quite ready to share. But nonetheless, he made a decision that he knew he could live with, happily.

"Bella…"

She moved out of his arms once again, fearing the worst. She steadied herself, knowing if he chose to leave, she would be okay.

"I'm so damn proud of the way you handled yourself. The independent, confident woman I've met in you carried herself with a lot of grace after something like that happened. And it has only made you stronger, in my eyes. You rose from those ashes and showed the world exactly who and what you are, as your own person."

Bella blinked back tears in disbelief. All the good things she had in her life Jake had ruined, but not this. Not what she had with Edward. This was hers, and Jacob couldn't break it.

"Edward," she whispered, "thank you. I really thought you would have high-tailed it out of here, by now."

"You can't get rid of me that easily, Swan. I'm not going anywhere as long as you'll have me."

She nodded her head, accepting his words as she smoothed her hair behind her ears. Bella readjusted herself on the sofa, so she could look him in the eye for what she was about to say next.

"But I do want you to know…" Bella added. "I'm no quitter. I fought. I fought for that relationship. I wasn't going to go down without a fight. I don't want you to think I just folded at the first sign of trouble. I believed in us until he made it impossible for me to be myself or believe in us anymore. That was the hard part for me to get over."

"Oh, Bella, I've no doubt you fought for it. Giving up is not who you are. That's the competitor in us. We hate to lose. You have nothing to prove to me. Nothing at all."

"I'm complicated," she muttered. "You might not like what you see now that your eyes have been opened."

He held her gaze with an intense look in his eyes. "I see you, Bella, more than you know. I see you. And as I just said, I'm not going anywhere. I see so many things we have in common. We're competitive. We have a fire burning in us to excel, and we're both committed to our sport. The latter sometimes being at the expense of our personal lives. We also have great families and friends who support us, and through it all, I see your loving spirit. Everyone who knows you feels it. It's who you are. You're not some woman Jacob Black tried to break. You've shown me, us, the very best of you. It's the lot of us who aren't worthy."

While his words touched her, Bella wasn't so sure he was right. He was worthy, and she realized after tonight, she needed to show him just how truly worthy he was.

They sat cuddled by the fire, enjoying the quiet. Bella was so relaxed she fell asleep in his arms. Edward knew with clarity that after tonight things were going to change between them. With Bella's full disclosures came the fact that he had to face his own reckoning. It was time, he thought, time for him to tell her about Emma. He wasn't sure how much he was going to be able to divulge, but he knew he had to start somewhere. Tonight was not the night for more revelations, but soon it would be.

"Hey, baby…" He nudged Bella a little, trying to wake her up gently. "Wake up. Let's go to bed."

Bella whimpered, nestling back into his warm, safe arms. She was so comfortable she didn't want to move.

"Come on, shug." Taking pity on her, he scooped her up and walked them back to the bedroom, carefully laying her on the bed. He shucked off his clothes, leaving him only in his boxers and his undershirt, before he joined her in bed. He coaxed her into his arms, assuring her she was safe, and pulled the covers over them.

~oOo~

Slumber did not come easy for Edward. As the faint morning sunshine peeked into the room, he groaned as he sat up in bed. His shoulder was stiff from Bella's head lying there all night. He rolled it around, trying to get some of the lost feeling back. She had slept so soundly that he hadn't had the heart to move her. But now nature called, so he moved her off successfully, without disturbing her sleep.

After taking care of his morning needs, Edward moved to the kitchen to make coffee. He felt at home there, knowing where everything was. As he reached into the cabinet to grab a coffee pod for the Keurig, he heard a scampering noise behind him.

"Morning, sweet girl. You need to go out?" Edward cooed at Millie.

He opened the back door and let her out. While Edward waited for the coffee to finish brewing, he filled Millie's bowl with food and replenished her water. Just as the coffee maker finished, Millie scratched the door to come in. He grabbed his cup, splashed in some milk, and walked over to open the door. She happily scampered over to her food bowl and started to eat.

Bella popped her head out a few minutes later while he was sitting at the counter. "Hey, do you mind making me a cup?"

"Sure. You want me to bring it back or—"

"Nope, I'll be just a minute."

Edward got out another pod and made Bella's coffee. He grabbed her favorite French Vanilla creamer out of the fridge and a stevia packet and poured them in.

She entered the room dressed in some leggings and a sweatshirt, pulling her hair back into a half-bun on the top of her head. Her face was freshly scrubbed, free of the makeup she went to bed in.

"Hmmm, thank you." Bella accepted the mug out of Edward's hand and took a much-needed sip of her coffee. She wrapped her arm around his waist to give him a hug. She appreciated the fact that he knew how she took her coffee. The little things they shared between them were becoming more and more comfortable.

"How did you sleep?" Edward asked.

"Oh my God. I slept like a rock."

"I'm glad. I don't think you moved all night." He chuckled. "I woke up in the same position we fell asleep in. You must have really needed it." He rolled his shoulder at the reminder, working out the kinks once more.

"Yesterday, well, yesterday was just too flipping much." She tilted the coffee cup to her lips, inhaling the aroma before taking a sip.

"Yeah, it was." Edward's soft gaze landed on her. He hoped today he would be able to give her some reassurance, something stable to hold on to. Edward's biggest fear was that Bella would build a wall back around herself, and that she would lock down their deal like Fort Knox.

Something deeper was growing between them. What they had was so much more than simply friendship, but how much more? Edward had a feeling Bella was on the same page, but after hearing her story the night before, he knew he couldn't push her.

"Okay…" Edward rubbed his hands together, ready to move past the angst of last night. "Today is a new day, and I know just what we need to do."

Bella giggled. "You do, do you?" She inched closer to him, taking his hand into hers.

"I do. Today we brunch, and then I scored some tickets to the Falcons wild card game. Box seats."

"Oh, Edward, I don't know if I am going to be good compa—"

"Bella…you are. You're the best company. Today, 'he who shall not be named' will not win here, nor will he carry any weight with us."

Bella eyed him curiously. Sometimes, Edward Cullen was too good to be true. "So, we brunch. Just like that?"

"Just like that." Edward nodded, leaving a peck on her lips.

"And we just move on?"

"We just move on."

"In the light of day, you really don't care about anything that Jac—I mean anything that 'he who shall not be named' said?"

"Nope. I couldn't give a rat's ass what he said or what he thinks." Edward wrapped his arms around her, pulling Bella in until she had to tilt her head up to meet his eyes. "You're all I see, all I want to see. The rest is just bullshit."

"All righty then." Bella leaned in and gave him a sweet kiss on the lips. She was so relieved that they hashed everything out last night. There was nothing left for them to say this morning. She had left no stone unturned.

"Let's go get ready. I'm starving."

"But…Edward, people will see us at the game together. I thought…"

"Let 'em see. I don't give a shit anymore. Let their tongues wag." He kissed her silly, making her knees weak and her head swoon.

"I have twenty-eight days left until spring training. I'm tired of hiding in the shadows with you."

Edward panted against her lips. His mouth slanted back over hers, eliciting a deep moan from the back of Bella's throat. Edward parted her mouth with his tongue, licking and tasting her. He couldn't hold back anymore. Edward returned her moan as he continued to ravish her in the kitchen.

When Bella broke the kiss, her lips tingled from Edward's assault. "But first?" She placed her coffee down, then raked her fingers through his thick locks as she leaped up into his arms, wrapping her legs firmly around him. Edward found purchase on her ass, grabbing and massaging. The kissing heated and gradually got out of control.

Edward skimmed his lips across her cheek before he roughly whispered in her ear. "First, I'm going to take you to bed. Brunch isn't the only thing I want to eat today."

An: So how are we doing? Jacob is definitely a piece of work. Bella certainly has reasons for the wall she has built around herself, doesn't she? It's not about Edward. He is amazingly patient and understanding.

Now you know what Bella went through. Jacob is based off of a friend of mine's ex-husband. He went off the deep end very much like Jacob did. Just so you know, she is happily divorced after 20 years and living her best life now. I am very proud her.

Please let me know what you think of this chapter. If you have been in this situation, or a family member or friend, my heart goes out to you, and I pray you or they are safe and in a better place now. Abuse comes in all sorts of forms. Mental, physical, and emotional. Bella, as well as my friend went through all three. Luckily they both got out before the physical escalated beyond what I have written.

Let's lighten the mood here and talk about some fun things happening in the fandom. In case you didn't know, we have a contest happening. The Eras Contest. Any Twilight character in any era.
