Justice slept all the way until next evening. Waking up was hard for her. Justice thought that yesterday was a dream and today was a regular day. She thought she was going to wake up and cook breakfast and go to work and call Christopher because he already went to work before her and the day was supposed to be normal. Unfortunately when Justice opened her eyes she saw darkness. It was dark outside and only city lights were blinking and flashing creating weird shapes of shadows on the walls. Justice lay down in the bad for several minutes just looking in the ceiling. The phone rang but she didn't even move she lay still. Darkness. Everything what she ever loved became darkness or maybe the only thing she loved was darkness. That thought made her feel better. It was all over, it was done, her life was demolished, but she was still here.
Justice walked around the apartment and felt an urge to get out. All this stuff wasn't her and she couldn't believe that she actually decorated this apartment and picked that furniture and colors. It wasn't her, who was that woman who did it, Justice didn't know her. She pull some sweat pants on and a big hoodie and went outside in the freezing cold. She herd the phone rang again before the door closed. Justice didn't care who that might be. Nothing mattered anymore.
Justice walk in the dark and empty street, well, it wasn't that empty. Surprisingly now she saw all those people who she never noticed before. The poor and the sick, they were hiding behind walls and garbage bins, they were sitting in the dark corners of alleys, walking like a dead in the shadows of buildings. Suddenly Justice remembered, she remembered everything what happened yesterday, every minute and every second of her life. She stopped right in the middle of crosswalk and laughter erupted from her chest. Cars started to honk and move slowly but the woman was staying still in the middle of crosswalk laughing out loud.
Chills got to her and she stopped her hysteric and finished the crosswalk. She got cold, freezing insides were shaking. She killed the guy. "How you can kill a man and then forget that you kill a man." – this thought gave Justice goosebumps. She walked into a little café on the corner and asked for coffee. All she found in her pocket was two dollars it was enough for a small cup. She desperately needed something warm, she felt cold sweat on her back but her face was red and burning in fever. "I killed the guy. I killed him because… because I thought he was the one who raped me fifteen years ago… He was the one! I knew it! I remember the back of his head. Do I? I have never seen his face and even now I can't remember it. What if it wasn't him? But… still the woman; I remember the woman and God knows what he would do to her if not me. I wonder if she is alive and safe now. Did she see me? Did she go to police?". Thousands thoughts flashed in Justice's brain but she came to the conclusion that she was safe.
People from Zones usually don't talk to police because they know police won't do anything to protect them. The same time even if the woman came to talk to police they won't do anything about it; they file a report and tell the victim to go home and usually they never reach out back. The coffee was cold but Justice was feeling better because the panic had stopped and she convinced herself to go home.
There were two messages on the phone. Justice played them sitting in the dark room and watching city through the window. The first message was from Christopher's mother and it didn't have any greetings:
"As I said my dear you've to move out from this apartment by the end of the month unless you want to pay the rent on your own. We hired a lawyer and Christopher will get out from the jail but it's over between you two. Walk away dear or… I'm just saying it's over I won't allow him to make the same mistake twice!"
The second message was from James Gordon: " Hey, Justice you didn't ask but I gave you a leave of absence because all this situation. Let me know when you are ready to come back. … Hmm…About Christopher ,,, He won't get out the evidence are solid. I'm sorry."
After all the silence came interrupted by cars noises from the outside. Justice already knew what she was about to do. It felt so good and so right that she regretted she didn't do it long before she met Christopher. It was time to go home.
