CHAPTER 4

When the Winchester brothers and Stephen entered Stephen's office. They saw DJ and Adam eating gummy bears. DJ was talking to Adam at a mile per minute , waving his little arms animatedly. Adam was smiling and nodding his head showing complete interest in whatever story the little boy was telling him.

Adam had brown almond eyes just like their dad used to have. His hair were shaggy and brown like Sam. He had a button nose and full lips like Dean. All in all , he looked a little like all the Winchester men.

But when Adam saw Sam and Dean. He quickly lowered his head and his smile vanished.

Dean was standing stock still. His expression completely blank. His lips were drawn in a thin line.

Sam made his way cautiously towards Adam as if Adam was a wild animal who would attack with one wrong move. He stood in front of Adam for a moment and then crouched so as to not tower over the kid.

"Hey , I am Sam. Nice to meet you, Adam." Sam said softly offering his hand. Adam looked at his hand but made no effort to shake it. And Sam let his hand drop by his side.

Dean was still standing in the corner. And when it became clear that his brother would not introduce himself at all. Sam said pointing towards Dean ,

"Thats Dean. My older brother. And you have already met my son , DJ."

Sam said smiling at his son , he was proud of DJ for making Adam smile , god knew the kid really needed a distraction from all the grief. He noticed Adam was looking at Dean through his hair which were almost covering his eyes. It would take time for the kid to open up but with patience and love they would get there. He would make sure of that.

Stephen broke the suddenly settled silence in the room. "Adam , Dean agreed to be your legal guardian. Now you would be living with Dean and Sam."

Adam looked up at that. First he looked at Stephan , the man was as usual smiling at him reassuringly. He then looked at Sam who was smiling brightly at him. And at last , he looked at Dean. Dean was not smiling at all. Dean looked angry and irritated. His lips were drawn in a thin line. Great ! Why can't Sam be his guardian. He didn't know Sam but atleast the man was smiling. But Dean looked like being here and adopting him would be the last thing he wanted to do.

Adam was angry too. Its not like it was his fault that his mother named Dean as his guardian. The man should have no reason to be angry with him.

"You would be fine , Adam. You need to be around family." Stephen was trying his hardest to assure the kid.

Sam also felt like he should assure Adam too. It must be very difficult for the kid to trust two strangers enough to go live with them. And Dean looking like he was ready for combat was not helping the matters at all.

"Stephen is right , Adam. I promise you , me and my brother will take real good care of you. I am not asking you to trust us yet but just try. Okay ?"

Adam was starting to like Sam. When Sam stood in front of him , he looked really intimidating. But when Sam crouched in front of him and talked to him softly , he realised Sam was like a big teddy bear. His height might make him look intimidating but he was not or atleast Adam hoped that would be the case.

Adam nodded his head as he was still not ready to speak.

Sam was relieved and happy , the kid answered him , well not verbally but still. He flashed his dimpled grin and stood. And this time instead of standing in front of Adam , he stood beside the kid.

Dean noticed that Adam was looking at him through his hair that covered his forehead and most of his eyes. How the kid could even see anything was beyond him. Adam was like Sam in the hair department , well that's good. He thought sarcastically. He was really irritated and that must be showing on his face too. But he was a little surprised when he saw Adam was looking at him with an irritated expression of his own.

I don't like Adam and he doesn't like me. Fantastic ! Dean thought.

"If you could sign some papers and give information like your cell number and residential address. You would be set to go. " Stephen said looking at Dean.

"Lets get this over with." grumbled Dean.

Dean signed some papers. Gave his and Sam's cell number and their residential address. And after that Stephen walked them to impala.

"I would visit you guys shortly." Stephen didn't said more just took a step towards Adam and hugged the kid. Both Dean and Sam understood well that the reason behind Stephen's visit would be to make sure that Adam was being taken care of and fed properly. Sam was starting to like Stephen , the guy really cared about Adam.

Adam returned the hug. Stephen really took good care of him. Stephen was always patient and didn't even once snap at him even when he ignored him constantly.

He looked down when he realised someone was tugging the belt loop of his jeans. DJ was looking at him with wide eyes.

"You will really live with us ?" DJ asked excitedly. And when Adam nodded DJ started jumping and clapping his hands. Adam smiled at the cute kid who was really excited to have him. Well atleast someone was , he thought looking at Dean.

Once they were seated in Dean's baby they took off. DJ and Adam in the back and Sam in the front with Dean driving.

John used to bring that car every time he visited him. He really liked it. When John started visiting him in his truck instead of impala. He had missed it. Adam thought about his father while lying his head on the window. He wondered where was his father. He would ask Sam about that.

Dean looked in the rear view mirror and saw Adam lying his head on the window lost in thoughts. Their eyes met for a few seconds then Adam looked away.

DJ was coloring in his Spiderman's coloring book as soon as he was buckled in his carseat. And he asked if Adam wanted to colour with him. Adam wanted to say 'no' but DJ was looking at him in such a hopeful expression that he couldn't.

When Dean looked in the rear view mirror , he saw Adam sitting indian style on the backseat facing DJ. His sneakers that he was wearing were dirtying the backseat. He was already angry and this angered him some more.

"Hey kid, put your legs down and sit properly and stop dirtying my baby's backseat." He snapped at Adam who flinched a little. It made him feel a little bad.

Sam looked up at Dean's voice from the book he was reading just in time to see Adam flinched. He was feeling bad for Adam and angry at Dean.

He was about to calm Adam and lash at Dean when Adam interrupted him , "My name is not kid. Its Adam , alright. I am comfortable sitting like this. I will not put my legs down."

Sam was a little shocked the way Adam answered Dean. He was really worried about his brother's reaction. He looked at his son who was also watching the whole exchange worriedly.

Dean saw red. He stopped the car and turned towards Adam.

Adam got scared when Dean snapped at him. But he was angry too and before he knew what he was doing , he snapped at Dean. After he yelled at Dean , Dean stopped the car and was now looking at him. Dean's face was red with anger. Adam could feel tears rushing to his eyes. What was his fault ? Why Dean was so angry with him ? He didn't even met Dean before to make him this angry with him.

"Excuse me ?" Dean asked through clenched teeth.

"Dean.." Sam tried.

"I am not talking to you , Sam." Dean said looking at Sam in warning.

"You heard me the first time. Or do you have some hearing problem ?" Adam answered angrily.

God , is this kid out of his freaking mind. Sam thought.

Adam knew that at this instant he was out of his mind. He was scared of Dean but then also he couldn't stop his mouth from running. What would Dean do , send him to foster care ? Hit him ?. He wanted to test the waters.

"Adam , enough." Sam said sternly trying to diffuse the situation a little.

"Listen to me boy and listen good. I will not tolerate you speaking to me like that. I have adopted you even though I didn't know you. So be grateful. One thing I hate the most is disrespect. When I tell you to do something , you better do it. Do not force me to make you walk the entire way because I would."

Dean was pissed. Adam was a mistake , a living proof of how his dad cheated on his mom. But still he adopted the kid so the kid better show him some respect.

Would Dean really make him walk the entire way ? The way Dean was looking at him , he might. He didn't want to know. He wanted to test the waters , but he was really frightened too. More than that he was feeling lonely. He had nobody. Sam and Dean were just doing a favour to him. He should be grateful. He didn't want to stay with them but more than that he didn't want to go to a foster home. Its not like he was a family to them. His mom used to say 'in family everyone is supposed to help eachother and that right there is what makes them family'.

But they weren't his family. So, he was like an unwanted burden to them. They didn't want him , they were just doing a favour to him and nothing else. He didn't know what he would do if Dean sent him back. He didn't have a place of his own. And he couldn't survive in a foster home. So he would be respectful if he wanted a roof over his head and food in his stomach.

"Put your legs down. And they better stay that way during the rest of the drive. Am I clear ?" Dean asked sternly.

"Yes , sir." Adam replied quietly and put his legs down.

Sam was surprised that Adam had backed off even though he looked like he would not and relieved that now the fight between Adam and Dean would stop for now atleast. But this sudden change in his behaviour was quite unnerving. Sam wanted to know what was really going in Adam's head. He would talk to him as soon as he gets a chance.

DJ was watching Dean arguing with Adam and he got really scared. He hadn't seen his uncle this angry.

"Unca Dean , pweese don't be angry." DJ said in a small scared voice.

Dean looked at DJ and realised how scared the kid looked.

"I am not angry anymore , kiddo. I am sorry that I scared you." Dean said gently.

"Really ?" DJ asked still looking scared.

"Have I ever lied to my favourite nephew." Dean said smiling.

"Nope." DJ replied and smiled a little and Dean turned forward and started the car.

Adam watched the way Dean's posture and his tone completely changed when he talked with DJ. He got a little jealous. DJ was lucky to have a family. Dean was capable of talking softly just like Sam but he didn't want to with him. He didn't know why Dean hated him so much. They didn't know each other , he get that but people just don't snap when they meet someone for the first time. He failed to control the tears this time and he turned his head towards the window to hide the fact that he was crying. Tears were running freely down his cheeks.

Dean looked in the rear view mirror and when he saw Adam crying , he felt like the biggest jerk. Sam was reading his stupid novel again. He could calm the kid down himself or he could call Sam. But he didn't do neither of those things and just continued to drive.
