CHAPTER 11
They decided they would start their search for Adam by first looking for him in the town. Their house was on the outskirts of the town. So maybe somebody have seen him when Adam passed through the town.
DJ was asleep buckled in his carseat. Sam was looking pissed and was staring out of the window as if Adam would magically appear if he just stare hard enough. There was so much tension in the car that it was becoming suffocating.
"God knows where is he ? You must be happy right ?" Sam said looking at Dean his lips drawn in a thin line.
"Sam… I didn't want this. Okay ? How many times I would have to say the same thing to you ?". Dean said looking at Sam. He was also angry but this was not the time to argue.
Sam said nothing. He was way too worried about Adam. He knew Dean didn't want Adam to run from the house but it was Dean's fault. So Sam was pissed at his brother.
They looked for Adam at every street. They stopped at every shop and showed the picture of the kid but so far they got nothing. Thank god for small mercies that they even had the picture of Adam. It was a passport size photo of him from his file that they got from Stephen but it had to do.
Sam thought once they found Adam he would click a dozen photos of him but he immediately admonished himself for thinking about even the possibility of such situation arising in the future.
Dean was losing his patience. Dean Winchester and the word 'patience' are never used in the same sentence. And Sam yelling at him and otherwise ignoring him was making the matters worse.
They were in the car driving aimlessly in a hope to see Adam somewhere when DJ woke.
"Daddy !" Sam didn't reply. He was lost in his thoughts.
"Daddy" DJ said a little loudly. Dean looked at his brother raising his eyebrows. Sam was lost in his thoughts.
"Daddy , daddy , daddy…" DJ said in a sing song voice that was way too cheerful and not at all appropriate for the tensed situation. But he is a kid and he didn't know that.
Sam didn't mean to but he yelled at his son , "What ? Stop singing."
DJ stopped immediately. He was in shock when his daddy yelled at him suddenly and he started crying.
"Hey ! You angry at me , fine. But don't you dare take it out on DJ. I am warning you."
Dean yelled at his brother. DJ is a kid he didn't do anything wrong. And Sam wasn't the only person worried he was worried too.
"He's my kid. I am the father. I don't need you to tell me what to do. I am tired of you interfering between me and DJ , you know. And what are you gonna do push me out like you did with Adam."
Sam said before he could control himself. Dean didn't say anything. But he could see that maybe with that he had gone too far. Dean gripped the steering wheel hard. He didn't said anything nor he looked at his brother. Sam felt bad but he swallowed it and focused his attention on his still crying son.
"I am sorry , son. I didn't mean to yell at ya. Can you tell me what you were saying ?"
DJ rubbed his teary eyes. And said "Its okay , daddy. I forgot what I wanna say."
Sam smiled a little at his son's innocence. "Its alright buddy. You tell me when you remember , okay."
Sam's phone rang breaking the heavy silence in the car. He picked it up and was shocked when it was the sheriff. He talked for few minutes and then ended the call.
Dean looked at his brother puzzled. Sam looked at him and said , "Adam is at the sheriff's office. He was arrested for stealing. We have to go there."
Dean turned right and made his way towards the sheriff's office , it would take them about half an hour to reach there. But there was one more thing bothering him , "How did he know your number ?"
"I gave it to Adam for emergencies." Sam replied. And Dean nodded.
The car was silent once again for the whole time it took for them to reach the sheriff. Dean stopped at the parking lot in the sheriff's department and exited the car. He made his way to the trunk and took out a box where he kept all the important papers. He took out Adam's adoption file and as he was about to go inside Sam blocked him carrying DJ in his arms. Dean looked at his brother and said ,
"I know you are the father but you really wanna take your son inside the sheriff's office ? I am his legal guardian. Its better that I go."
"What a bang up job you have done. But you're right. Go ahead."
Sam said sarcastically.
Sam was beginning to get on his nerves but Dean focused on the more important matter that was to bring Adam home and with that thought he made his way inside.
Adam was relieved that they didn't lock him in a prison. Everything was going fine until he got hungry and made a stupid mistake. 'Why the hell he didn't take some food with him before leaving ?' Oh because he was stupid. He thought while yelling at himself silently. He was loosing his mind. He had left the town almost. But he got hungry and he couldn't control it since he had walked all night and also he hadn't eaten much last night. He saw a small diner and made his way inside. He knew he had no money. So he carefully took a corner booth closest to the exit figuring that he would order just one dish and eat it and then he would run. But as he was about to run the bulky waiter came carrying the bill and when he said he had no money , the owner called the cops.
The sheriff was a woman named Jody Mills. She was the sheriff of Sioux Falls , South Dakota. She was an experienced sheriff and by looking at the kid she could tell , he wasn't homeless but looked like he ran from wherever he lived. When asked he gave the number of a man named Sam Winchester. When she talked with him the man sounded genuinely worried. But she would not hand the kid to just anyone she would make sure first.
Dean entered the sheriff department. Looking around searching for Adam. He finally found him sitting on a chair at the corner with his head down. He was about to make his way towards the kid when he was stopped by the sheriff.
Adam saw Dean. He relaxed and then got worried. He didn't trust Dean. The man would probably tell the sheriff to keep him locked here. He knew both Sam's and Dean's number. Sam had made him learn them and then have him recite them to him atleast three times each. But he chose to tell Sam's number because he trusted Sam atleast more than he did Dean.
"Sheriff Jody Mills." Jody said offering her hand and introducing herself.
"Dean Winchester." Dean shook her hand and introduced himself.
"I am here for Adam Miligan Winchester."
Dean said looking at Adam.
"First , I would like to talk with you. Follow me, please." Jody said entering her cabin.
Dean followed knowing a thorough interrogation was in order.
"Take a seat." Jody said taking a seat herself and when Dean was seated too. She began ,
"How are you related to the child ?"
"I am his legal guardian. Here is his adoption file." Dean said handing the file.
Jody took the file but didn't open it and just continued her questions. Dean guessed she was a tough one.
"How come you adopted him ?"
"He is my half brother. Me and my brother Sam , the one you talked to didn't know about him until we got a call from the lawyer of the kid's mother. She died in a car accident leaving me as Adam's legal guardian. My dad has also died and he didn't mention the kid once. When we found about him. We adopted him."
Jody nodded ,that was weird but possible. The man in front of her look about thirty and the kid was twelve. Still they were brothers , like she said it was weird but possible. In her line she has seen people do weird things. Like not telling their children that you have another sibling out there , just added to the pile.
"That must be a surprise."
"Yeah , tell me about it." Dean knew the woman was evaluating him. He knew he should be careful besides it was not his first time. He had been a hunter and had sometimes crossed paths with the cops.
"Why did he ran ? "
"He is a teenager. You know how they are the know it all types. We had an argument. And he ran." Dean said shaking his head. Making his face look believable.
"Okay. Now why don't you tell me the real reason. "
Dean was shocked. But quickly covered it. The woman was a pro or something to figure him so quickly.
"What do you mean ?"
Jody said nothing just raised her eyebrows. Making Dean feel like a bratty kid caught in lying by his mother.
He took a deep breath and told her. He told her. He told a stranger how he felt about Adam. The woman had a motherly way about him that for a moment he forgot he was talking to a stranger. And he told her everything , the frequent arguments with Sam ever since Adam , a little about his dad. He didn't know if he was making a mistake or not. But his instincts told him to trust this lady. And they had never let him down when he was a hunter so he followed them now too.
Jody listened to the man. She could tell he was not a bad person just confused about the sudden appearance of a younger brother in his life. And that was expected.
"I don't know what to tell you son. But your brother is right. You should give this kid a chance. The kid needs you , he needs support. And you know what they say 'When life throws you curve balls , hit them out of the park !'.
"I know , mam. And I will." Dean said resolutely. He had already made this decision when he was in his baby searching for the kid. He would try his hardest to accept Adam.
Jody nodded and smiled a little , "But I would like your cell number and address. I think you are telling the truth but its my job , you know." She also studied the file after that and noted the number of Stephen , Adam's lawyer.
"Sure, if you just handed me Adam without asking my information , I would think you have done a pretty bad job." Dean said smiling a little.
Jody laughed. And when she was satisfied. She called her assistant to bring Adam.
Adam was sitting biting his nails. He was damn nervous. He tried to made his way quietly to the cabin to eavesdrop only to be stopped midway by a nasty glare from a bulky officer. He jumped a little when an officer came to him to take him to the sheriff's cabin.
He entered the cabin with his head down. Jody saw him and called to him softly , " Hey Adam , would you like to go back with Dean ?"
Adam was shocked , he looked at Jody and then at Dean. He thought Dean would leave him here or tell the sheriff to send him to foster care.
"Adam ?" Jody called again when Adam didn't reply.
Dean was becoming tense. What if the kid refused ? He didn't want Adam but that was in the past. He want to give it a shot now.
Adam looked at him. And Dean smiled reassuringly. Adam was shocked but seeing Dean smiling reassuringly at him , he pinched himself in order to wake himself from a weird dream he was having. But when nothing happened he realised it was reality. Dean wanted to take him back even when he ran and stole. Whenever he thought he understood Dean , the man did something only to confuse him more. He also realised that they were waiting for his answer , going back sounded way better than the foster home or the prison and he nodded.
Dean sagged with relief. Jody noticed it but said nothing. She knew now Dean would try to accept the kid. She would have hated to send the kid to a foster home. But now he would go with his family. But she would have to make some surprise visits to the Winchesters. She was okay with that it was her job being a sheriff and all.
