CHAPTER 13

They reached home finally after having a long morning. Sam was carrying DJ partially because the kid was asleep and partially because he was wearing only one shoe. So if you find a shoe lying on the side of the road , y'all know the reason behind it. Sam carried DJ to his room. He came back to find Dean handing a soda to Adam and taking a beer for himself.

Sam also took a beer for himself and sat beside Adam on the couch. Dean didn't sit on the couch instead he sat on the coffee table in front of Sam and Adam. This conveyed how serious the conversation was going to be.

Adam was nervous , he felt exactly like a convict in the courtroom in front of a judge waiting for his punishment where Dean was the judge and Sam was his lawyer.

"At what time did you leave from the house , Adam ?" Dean asked calmly knowing how nervous Adam must be. He looked at Sam who was looking as nervous as Adam.

Dean's tone was way too calm for his liking. He liked a yelling Dean much better than this mysteriously calm Dean. Thought Adam.

"At about 3 in the morning , Sir." Adam replied quietly and also respectfully because he didn't know what would happen next. Neither Dean nor Sam had said a word to him about running from the house ever since Dean picked him up from the sheriff's.

Dean nodded and continued , "What happened then ? I want to know everything."

Adam took a deep breath and told Dean and Sam everything , the name of the diner he ate , how they called cops , what did he tell the sheriff. It was kinda exhausting task. At the end Sam squeezed his shoulder assuringly. He leaned a little into the touch and when he looked at Sam , the man gave him a gentle smile. Adam was avoiding looking at Dean because he was afraid of the expression on Dean's face or his reaction to how he ran and then stole.

Dean nudged Adam's knee with his own. He knew the kid was avoiding looking at him. Well if you have done nothing but yell at someone from the day you met them , you cannot blame if they are fidgety around you. But that will change , Dean thought resolutely.

"Hey kiddo look at me." Dean said softly.

And when Adam finally looked at him , he continued. "What you did was wrong , you could get hurt too. But I cannot blame you. I am not an easy guy to be around, am I. Its just that kid , you came as a surprise in my life. I was angry at my dad for keeping you a secret , ya know. And I took that out on you. But I was wrong. And now I am willing to try to accept you. If you could give me another chance. I know me and I could tell you this now that I would be making a lot of mistakes. But you have full authority that anytime you feel that I did or say something that I shouldn't , you can come talk to me or yell at me but just don't give us all a heart attack by running like that. So would ya give me a chance ?" Dean looked at Adam in a hopeful expression and gave him a small smile.

Sam couldn't believe what had just happened. Did Adam running like that was an eye opener for Dean that he was being way too hard on Adam. It sure looked like that. He was waiting for this moment for Dean to really try to accept Adam on his own without him forcing Dean. Because you cannot force someone to love. It comes from the heart , it has to come from the heart because then only it will be real.

Adam was looking like a fish out of the water , his mouth opening and closing but no voice was coming out. What brought this sudden change of Dean's heart ?. But he wasn't the one to look a gift horse in the mouth. He looked at Dean who was waiting for his answer.

"Yes , Sir." Adam said and this time was the first time since he met Dean that he smiled at the man.

Dean's smile widened. He patted Adam on the back and he was pleased when Adam didn't flinch.

"Thats definitely call for a celebration. Why don't we all go eat some pizza tonight ?" Sam said with his classic dimpled grin.

Dean didn't say anything to Sam. Adam looked at Sam who was watching Dean with a kicked puppy look. But when Sam looked at him , Adam tried to give Sam a reassuring smile , the one Sam always gives him.

Sam tried to smile at Adam but he was sure that it looked more like a grimace.

"Dean , man come on. You know I didn't mean that." Sam tried but Dean just stood and went to his room.

Adam looked at Sam who was watching Dean go with a forlorn expression. He could be there for Sam like Sam has been there for him every time after one of Dean and his arguments. "What happened , Sam ?" Adam asked hesistently because he still wasn't sure if he had the right to ask or what was his place in this family.

"Um, you know when we were searching for you I was a little angry at Dean for being too hard on you that you had run from the house. So , I said somethings that I shouldn't. We Winchesters , we express worry in the form of anger so I snapped at DJ for no reason and he snapped at me and then I said things like 'I am the father' ,'Its my kid' , 'I don't want you interfering' and all. So , he is pissed at me."

Sam said shrugging.

Dean loves DJ and that were some hurtful words but Dean would forgive Sam. He was sure of that. For the time he had been here , he had noticed the way Dean looked at Sam and DJ with nothing but affection in his eyes. Adam thought. Now Dean was willing to accept him , maybe someday Dean would have the same affection for him too , it can't hurt to hope, right.

"He will forgive you , you know." Adam said to Sam.

"I know he will. He always has." Sam said smiling at Adam and thinking about all those times when they were kids and he had hurt his brother's feelings intentionally or unintentionally and Dean had always forgave him. Many times , Dean had even taken blame upon himself so that Sam couldn't be punished by their father. So yeah Sam wasn't worried about whether Dean would forgive him or not , what worried him was when would Dean forgive him. It takes quite a time for Dean's anger to calm down , he knew that by experience.

Dean had just talked with the delivery guys , they had came in the morning and since no one was home as they were all out searching for Adam so now the beds and mattresses would be delivered tomorrow. He came in the kitchen to see DJ sitting at the kitchen table deep in his thoughts. Curious to know what was going on in his nephew's head , Dean made his way towards DJ and lightly knocked on his head.

"Whats going on , kiddo ?"

"Unca Dean can we get a kitten ?" DJ asked looking at Dean with his wide hazel eyes.

"A kitten , let me think about it , we could. But your daddy is allergic to cats."

"Wha's that means ?"

"It means he and the kitten cannot be in the same house."

DJ thought for a moment and then shrugged his little shoulders and said , "Its okay , daddy can live in the garage."

Dean laughed at this loudly and finally said jokingly , "Huh , if your daddy says okay to livin' in the garage. We could think about that."

"Yay , Unca Dean." DJ squealed.

"I don't think I want that." Sam said. Yeah , his son had no problem if his daddy is living in the garage. He could really count on his kid in the future.

"Daddy, its big unca Dean showed me , yesterday. You can sleep there and I will bring you food." DJ said in his puppy dog expression.

Wow , his son really wants him to leave the house. Here he thought his kid loved him. He is now seriously missing the time with baby DJ. Here , he was always worrying about his kid , the same kid who wanted him to live in the garage for a cat.

"Comeon Sammy , say yes." Dean said to Sam teasing. Sam was shocked that his brother was even talking to him but he said nothing.

"Hey Adam , ya mind Sam living in the garage ?" Dean asked Adam when he saw the kid entering the kitchen. Adam looked at Dean in a weird expression but when Dean winked , he nodded. He was also really happy to be included in the teasing and nonetheless by Dean.

"I hate y'all." Sam grumbled good-naturedly and exited the kitchen.

Dean was in his office sorting through some of his files and also finding the phonebook where he kept the phone numbers of all of his suppliers so that he could hand them to Sam tomorrow. They would be starting working as partners tomorrow. And now all the paperwork and managing accounts and calling the suppliers for parts and all would be Sam's work and for that he was more than happy. He liked working with cars more than working with people except where some hot chicks are involved so he was happy to give Sam that part.

He looked up when there was a knock , "Come in." Dean called.

Sam entered the office and said "Dean , I wanted to talk to you. I am sorry , man.."

Before he could say more Dean interrupted him.

"No Sam, its fine , I get that. You are the father. I shouldn't interfere between you and your kid."

"No, man. Look , you know I didn't mean all that. I was worried about Adam and I said somethings that I shouldn't. I know how much you love and care about DJ. After Jess's death I was all alone and sometimes I didn't even know if I am raising my son properly , ya know. But ever since you entered mine and DJ's life , I know that if I do something wrong you would be there to rectify it and me and DJ can always depend on you because no matter what happens you would be always there to support us like an anchor." Sam looked at Dean who was avoiding looking at him because his brother was always uncomfortable in these 'chick flick moments' which was Dean's term for these heart to heart talks.

"I can't raise DJ alone. Ya heard him , he wants his father to live in a garage for a cat. Whats that tell you ? Man , I need your help to raise that kid." Sam gave a small laugh to lighten the situation and Dean finally looked at him.

"Ofcourse you can raise him without me." Dean said.

"I know I can raise him without you. But I cannot raise him right without you. And I need you for that." Sam said looking directly in Dean's eyes to show how serious he is.

"Alright enough with the chick flick moment. I wasn't gonna leave that kid with your girly butt just because I was angry at ya." Dean said smiling.

"Jerk."

"Bitch." Came his brother's expected reply and Sam asked one more thing that was bothering him.

"Dean , you know I am happy that you are finally trying to accept Adam but what brought that change ?" He asked a little cautiously because everytime he had talked with Dean about Adam , it had always resulted in an argument.

"You can say that Adam running like that made me realise that I was too hard on him. If something had happened to him , I wouldn't be able to forgive myself. And like you said my anger was misdirected. It would take me sometime to really accept him but now I am willing to try. You can't punish someone for just being born , right ?. Besides there's no excuse for being a jerk to kids or women ever."

Dean said shrugging.

Sam nodded and he had a feeling that now everything would be alright between Adam and Dean. It was a good feeling and he liked that. It would be awesome if they could be a family together and it would happen, he was sure of that.
