CHAPTER 24
Adam woke up a bit later than usual the next morning. He sat up on his bed , rubbing his eyes and then immediately regretted waking up when his whole body ached. His throat felt sore and a bit swollen. He groaned in pain. Every part of his body hurts. He laid back down on the pillow and turned from side to side to find a comfortable position. He was feeling cold so he burrowed himself under the blankets. His nose was running too. He was definitely sick.
Dean made his way towards Adam's room. It was half past ten in the morning and the kid hadn't come for the breakfast yet. He knew that Adam wasn't an early riser and it was a Sunday but still it was pretty late. The kid was in need of a serious lecture. He didn't bother with knocking and opened the door to Adam's room and found the kid sleeping.
"Adam, wake up. Everyone is waiting for you for breakfast. Comeon , kid." Dean said shaking the bundle of blanket on the bed, that was Adam.
Adam groaned when he felt Dean shaking his shoulders. He pushed the blanket away from his face just enough to glare at Dean to stop shaking him because his head felt like it could explode at any moment.
Dean looked at Adam who was peeking at him from under the blankets. His eyes were looking a bit red. He pushed Adam's hair away from his face and laid his hand on the kid's forehead. His eyebrows shot up in surprise when he felt the kid burning up.
"You have a fever , kiddo." Dean said pushing the blanket further down to reveal Adam's full face. He felt Adam's cheeks with the back of his hands. 'Yep , the kid has a fever , a pretty high one too.' Adam's face looked flushed and his nose was running. The kid was sick. Dean thought.
"I am cold." Adam whined and again burrowed himself under the blankets.
"Sam..." Dean called to Sam. A moment later Sam entered the room with DJ in tow.
"Adam has a pretty high fever." Dean said to Sam. Sam came near Adam's bed and just like Dean , he also pushed the blanket away from Adam's face much to the kid's annoyance to feel his forehead.
"He is burning up, Dean." Sam said furrowing his eyebrows in worry.
"Yeah, I know. Bring the thermometer. Its in the first aid box in the bathroom. Its better to know his temperature before giving him any medicine." Dean said and Sam nodded and left.
"How do you feel , kiddo ?" Dean asked softly to Adam while running his fingers through the kid's hair gently.
"I feel cold. I am hurting everywhere. And my nose can't stop running." Adam replied sniffing miserably and wiping his nose with his sleeve. Dean took his handkerchief out from his pocket and handed it to him.
"Unca Dean , Adam is sick ?" DJ asked with his little face drawn in worry.
"Yeah, kiddo. I think he have a flu. You stay away from Adam. We don't want you getting sick too. Okay ?" Dean said to DJ. One sick kid is enough, they don't want another one.
"Yes sir. He will be okay ?" DJ asked in a small voice. He was looking really worried.
"Yeah. He would be fine." Dean replied with a smile to his little nephew to put him at ease.
"Here, Dean." Sam entered the room with a thermometer in one hand while a bottle of Tylenol in another.
"Open your mouth, kiddo." Dean said to Adam taking thermometer from Sam. Adam opened his mouth just enough for Dean to place the thermometer under his tongue. It was a digital thermometer so all they had to do was to wait for it to beep. And when it finally beeped , Dean took it out.
"102°" Dean said with a serious expression.
Adam coughed and then winced when his throat hurt.
"Its pretty high, Dean. We should take him to a doctor." Sam replied looking at Adam with a concerned expression.
"There's a clinic not far from here. I will take Adam there. You stay with DJ. We don't want him to get infection from Adam and end up getting sick too." Dean said taking out a tablet of Tylenol.
Sam nodded. He would like to go with Dean to take Adam to a doctor. But he cannot leave his son alone in the house. And the last thing they need is DJ catching the flu from Adam. Besides , he was sure that Dean would take best care of Adam.
"You go have breakfast with DJ, Sam. I will take care of Adam." Dean said.
Sam looked at Adam and then ran his fingers through the kid's brown locks. "You will be fine, kiddo." He said giving a soft smile. And a moment later he exited the room with DJ.
"Here, Adam." Dean said handing Adam the Tylenol with a glass of water.
"I hate pills." Adam said and shook his head.
"Too bad but you need to take it to bring your fever down a bit and then we will go see a doctor." Dean said in a calm yet firm tone. He really hoped that a sick Adam wouldn't be as difficult to handle as a sick Sam was.
Adam made no move to take the pill from Dean. Instead he turned away from him. Dean silently counted till ten in his head. All the while telling himself that the kid was sick and yelling at him will not help.
"Adam, comeon kiddo." Dean said. He was proud of himself when his voice came out gentle.
"But I don't wanna, Dean." Adam said whining. He looked like a two year old instead of a twelve to Dean at the moment.
Dean pursed his lips. He was gonna have a really tough time dealing with a sick Adam. He could just tell.
"Nobody likes to take the medicine but they have to. I know you are feeling horrible right now and the Tylenol will help with that until we see a doctor. You can take your medicine by yourself or I can force it down your throat. But you are taking it either way. Now, what's it gonna be ?" Dean asked sternly. He was already beginning to lose his patience with Adam and the day had just started.
Adam wouldn't put it past Dean to force the medicine down his throat. And when he figured that there was no way out of it. He finally sat up and stick out his hand to take the pill from Dean. He hated these stupid pills. They make him want to puke.
Dean heaved a sigh of relief when Adam finally took the pill though the kid had done it while glaring at him the whole time. He felt bad talking to Adam with such a stern tone especially when the kid was sick but he had tried to be patient but Adam hadn't listened. But this way atleast , he had taken his medicine.
Dean went towards Adam's closet and took out a pair of warm sweatpants, a long-sleeve top, jacket and a pair of woolen socks. It was pretty cold out today and Adam was already feeling cold due to the fever. He then laid all the clothes on the bed.
"Okay, kid. Change your clothes and then we can head out and see a doctor." Dean said jerking his head towards the clothes.
Adam hated hospitals. He was about nine when he was admitted in a hospital with a serious case of food poisoning and ever since he hated doctors and hospitals. It was pretty ironic since his mother was a nurse. The doctors give you injections and bitter syrups there all the time and they cause you pain and make you want to puke. Whenever he got sick , his mother would take care of him and he didn't have to visit the hospital unless it was something serious which couldn't be treated at home. For him, a flu wasn't something that cannot be treated at home. But apparently for Dean it was.
"I don't want to go." Adam replied , his voice hoarse with the cold.
Dean shook his head at Adam and said, "You need to see a doctor. And we're going. Now change your clothes, Adam."
"But I can be treated here. I promise I will take this stupid pill too. But I don't wanna go." Adam said coughing and then wincing and rubbing at his sore throat. His throat hurts and the coughing only makes it worse.
"You have a high fever and from what I can see , you have a cold and cough too. So we're going." Dean said firmly. The kid could be damn stubborn even when he was sick. Dean could feel a headache coming.
"I hate hospitals and doctors." Adam said pouting which made him look even younger than his age.
"We're not going to a hospital. Its just a clinic. And nobody likes to see a doctor but you have to when you're sick. Now change your clothes. I am gonna wait outside and if in five minutes you are not done, I will do it myself." Dean said in a hard tone making his way outside and closing the door behind him. The kid really likes to push his limits.
After about five minutes, Dean entered the room. He felt his temper rising at the sight on the bed. Adam hadn't even moved an inch and instead the kid was playing some game on his mobile.
"Adam Miligan Winchester." Dean said in a rough voice making Adam jump.
"You made your choice. Now I am gonna change your clothes myself." Dean said yanking the blanket away from Adam and picking his clothes.
Adam shivered with cold when the blanket was yanked away from him. He didn't want to go. Was it so hard to understand ? He doesn't like doctors. But when has ever Dean listened to him. The answer is never. Dean has never listened to him. He could tell Dean that he hated doctors and hospitals because he was afraid of the injections but he didn't want to sound like a baby. Adam squirmed and tried to get away from Dean when Dean started removing his clothes to get him into the one that he had taken out. He was embarrassed because Dean was treating him like a toddler by changing his clothes.
Dean rubbed his face tiredly. Putting the clothes on Adam was turning to be an impossible task. The kid was moving too damn much.
"Adam, if you don't stay still enough for me to put these clothes on you , I will put you over my knee right this instant. Doesn't matter that you're sick. I gave you an option to change them yourself but you didn't. So, will you stay still ?" Dean asked clenching his teeth. And when Adam didn't reply , he had no choice but to repeat his question a little more sternly.
"Adam Miligan Winchester. When I ask you a question , you answer. Will you stay still ?"
"Yes sir." Adam replied reluctantly. He really doesn't want to get his ass beaten especially when his whole body aches already.

Adam was sitting in the passenger seat looking out of the window. Dean could tell the kid was pissed at him for bringing him to see a doctor because Adam hadn't even once looked at him during the entire ride to the clinic. He tried to talk to Adam but the kid hadn't said a word to him. Adam was ignoring him completely.
When they reached the clinic , Dean parked his impala and made his way towards Adam to help him out of the car. He offered Adam his hand and he was glad when Adam accepted it. The kid was sniffing and coughing miserably. It would be better the sooner they see the doctor because Dean can't see Adam sick and suffering like this. They made their way inside. A cute brunette at the reception handed him a set of papers to be filled before they were allowed to see the doctor and guided them towards the waiting room.
There were a lot of people in the waiting room. It would take them sometime to see the doctor. Dean was glad that he had taken the time to go through Adam's medical records from his file that Stephen had handed him. He quickly filled out the paperwork and handed the clipboard back to the receptionist. He again settled besides Adam and wrapped his arm around the kid and gently pulled him until Adam had his head resting on his shoulder. Adam looked like he could sleep at any moment. His eyes were drooping.
"You still feeling cold , kiddo ?" Dean asked Adam. He noticed Adam was still very warm even after taking the Tylenol.
Adam nodded and didn't say anything because even speaking hurts. He was feeling tired. He just wanted to go back and lie on his bed and burrow himself deep under the blankets.
"Adam Miligan Winchester." A nurse called and guided them first to a weighing machine to measure Adam's weight and then to a room to wait for the doctor.
After a moment , the doctor entered. He was a young man even younger than Dean. He took a seat and motioned for Adam to sit at a small chair besides him. Adam didn't want the doctor to check him so he opened his mouth to protest but one look from Dean was enough to shut him up. He quietly took his seat besides the doctor.
"I am Dr. Maverick. I hear Adam here is not feeling well ?" The doctor introduced himself and then with a smile , he turned towards Adam. Adam rolled his eyes. They all smile like that at first and then they pump you up with painful injections and lots of medicines.
Dean wanted to reach across the table and smack Adam upside down his head when he noticed Adam rolling his eyes at the doctor. The kid was completely ignoring the young doctor by not even looking at him. He didn't know why the kid hated doctors. But there was no excuse to be disrespectful.
When the doctor got no response from Adam. He looked at Dean in question. Dean cleared his throat and said a little firmly,
"Adam , tell the doctor how you're feeling." Adam recognised this tone of Dean's voice very well. This tone indicates that if he doesn't obey Dean now then he will be definitely punished later.
"Everything hurts. My throat feels sore. My nose can't stop running and coughing makes my throat hurt more." Adam said.
The young doctor nodded. He first measured Adam's heartbeat with a stethoscope and then checked his nose, eyes and ears. After that he told Adam to open his mouth and examined his throat with the help of a flashlight. It looked a little swollen.
"How long have you been feeling sick ?". The doctor asked holding out a thermometer to measure Adam's temperature.
"Since I woke up this morning." Adam replied and opened his mouth a bit reluctantly just enough for the doctor to place the thermometer under his tongue.
"103°" The doctor said taking out the thermometer after it beeped.
"His temperature was 102 in the morning. I gave him a Tylenol and its been one hour since that. Shouldn't his temperature be down a bit instead of rising ?" Dean asked the doctor worriedly.
"Calm down , Mr. Winchester. Its nothing to be worried about. Adam has a viral infection. It is pretty common. I will prescribe him some antibiotics and a cough syrup and within three days , he will be fine. But since the fever is pretty high , I need to give him an injection. It will help lower down his temperature." The doctor explained in a gentle voice.
Adam's face lost all the colour at the mention of injection. He knew that this would happen. The doctor will first smile at him and then he will use needles on him.
"Dean , please. I don't want an injection. I will take any medicine but not injection." Adam said pleadingly to Dean.
Dean's heart broke a little hearing Adam's pleas. Now, he kinda have an idea that why the kid hated doctors. Its because he was afraid of injections. He stood up and made his way towards Adam. As soon as he was near , Adam threw his arms around his waist.
"Please, Dean. I don't want injection." Adam said in a small voice. Though he wasn't crying but he looked like he would at any moment.
Dean rubbed Adam's back soothingly and nodded at the doctor to prepare for the injection. The young doctor nodded back and made his way to a corner in the room where a large cabinet full of medicines was placed. He took out an empty syringe from it and began filling it with medicine. Dean directed his attention back towards Adam. He pushed back Adam gently enough to look in his eyes.
"Its okay, kiddo. I promise it will not hurt much. It will feel just as if someone has pinched you a little." Dean said softly brushing Adam's hair away from his face. The kid was burning up. Adam would have to take an injection whether he likes it or not.
"But I said that I don't want it." Adam replied angrily.
"Your fever is pretty high, kid. It needs to come down and the injection will help with that. Comeon now." Dean said holding Adam's arm and guiding him towards the examination table.
Adam dug his heels in and refused to follow Dean. He was trying to get away from Dean. Dean let out a heavy sigh and turned towards Adam with a hard expression. Before he could say anything , the doctor spoke,
"It will not hurt that much, Adam. I promise.."
Adam didn't give him a chance to finish and yelled at him, "Just fucking stop. Nobody is talking to you."
That was the last straw for Dean. He had finally lost all his patience with the kid. He could understand that Adam was afraid of injections but there was no excuse for the kid to talk to an adult like that. He gripped both shoulders of Adam tightly and look him in the eye.
"I understand that you don't want to get an injection but there is no excuse to talk to an adult like that. Apologise to Dr. Maverick." He said in an authoritative tone. Adam didn't reply.
"Its okay." Dr. Maverick said. He could feel the tension buliding in the room. But Dean cut him off with a glare and he wisely shut his mouth.
"You hear me young man. Apologise. Now." Dean said clenching his teeth. He would soon develop a high blood pressure problem because of Adam. If the way how fast he loses his temper with the kid is anything to go by.
"Sorry." Adam replied at last. He knew he had pushed Dean pretty far already.
"Its alright." Dr. Maverick replied with a smile to put both the man and the kid in front of him at ease.
"Now you can either take the injection on your own like a brave boy which I know you are. Or I can hold you down while the doctor gives it. Your choice. But either way , you are getting it. Whats it gonna be ?" Dean asked sternly.
Adam didn't reply just went sulkily off to the examination table. Dean sighed heavily and followed behind Adam.
"You need to lie on your stomach. I need to give the shot in your hip." The doctor said taking the cap outta the needle.
"Now that's not fair. You give the shot in my arm." Adam said shaking his head. He had already embarrassed himself enough in front of Dean by behaving like a baby by refusing to take the injection. He would not get a shot in his butt. It would be more embarrassing. Well, it wasn't like Dean hadn't seen him without his pants. Because Dean had , when he had spanked him but he was in his boxers and it was pretty embarrassing then too.
"It would be a lot less painful there. Besides you need a heavy dose to bring down your fever and it needs to be released in your body in smaller amounts. The muscles back there are much thicker than they are in the arm. So I need to give it in your hip." Dr. Maverick explained gently.
Dean was glad for the doctor for being so patient with Adam. He knew it might be uncomfortable for the kid but it needs to be done. He would not take any risks with Adam's health. Doesn't matter whether Adam likes this or not.
"Lie down , Adam." Dean said and he pointed a finger to silence Adam when he saw that the kid was about to interrupt him and continued, "Dr. Maverick, is it possible to restrain Adam by tying him down. ?"
Dr. Maverick was maybe a young doctor but he understood well what Dean was doing. He was trying to convince Adam.
"I will call Miss Jasmine and ask her to bring some ropes." Dr. Maverick replied in a faux serious tone and pretended to call the nurse.
Adam swallowed nervously. Being tied down to get an injection in the butt would be more embarrassing.
"Okay. No need for ropes." Adam said and lied down on his front.
Dr. Maverick smiled and pulled down Adam's sweatpants a little to give him a shot just below his hip bone.
Adam felt the needle piercing through his skin and he felt his eyes pooling with tears. He was holding Dean's hands tight enough to leave a bruise. Dean closed his eyes hearing Adam's whimpering. If there was any way that he would have taken all the pain away from Adam, he would have done it in a second. The thing he hated most in his life was to see any member of his family in pain.
"All done." Dr. Maverick said when he was done.
Adam got up and wiped his tears hastily. He was embarrassed and angry. "The only part of my body that didn't hurt is now hurting because of you. I hate you , Dean." He said to Dean angrily.
It stung a little. Dean thought. Whenever he feels like he and Adam are beginning to bond , something happens which made him think otherwise. But it doesn't matter. As long as the kid is healthy , Adam can hate him all he wants.
Dr. Maverick handed a prescription to Dean. Dean thanked the doctor and after picking up the medicine from a pharmacy near the clinic ,Dean and Adam made their way back. Adam wasn't looking at him. He was again back to ignoring him. And Dean sighed for the hundredth time since morning.
