The fight, the fight was almost here. He could smell the smoke from the house's chimneys in front of the barricade. Not a sound was heard. They were hiding. The people hiding in their houses don't know that they are living in a world as slaves to everything. They needed to be free. Free from people who tried to take their houses and their loved ones from them. Like his lover's parents. They take what they want, he will not stand for that.
He tried to sleep, but it was no use. The hard cobblestone street beneath him kept him awake. He wished that he was in his bed at home with his parents but no, that fight kept him from it. It was midnight but no stars were out. Weird, he thought there would be some at least. Oh, he loved midnight. It was the time when he once met the most beautiful person in the world.
Albus Potter looked up to the top of the barricade that they made only hours ago. He could not believe how fast things were moving. On the top of it was one of his new friends, staring out at the cold empty streets below them. Albus got up from the ground and stretched before he walked over to him.
"You should be asleep," the older boy said, not turning around. Albus sighed.
"You talked me into this," Albus said quietly, trying to stay calm. However instead of answering his friend Edward Lupin only nodded. "Why?" Albus asked. He needed to get some kind of answer from the older boy. Edward didn't answer. Albus let out a frustrated noise and ran his hand over his face. He watched as Edward turned around and opened his closed eyes.
"You wanted to fight; you told me that. Are you backing down now? Cause there is no backing down. My parents didn't back down," Edward told him.
"But they're dead," Albus said, voice raising. Edward didn't say anything and Albus couldn't read his face. Then, Edward turned away from Albus again without saying another word. Albus sat down next to him and stared up towards the sky, searching for his favorite star that could only be seen around midnight. There were no stars at all.
"You would think there would be stars," Albus said slowly. "I wish there were stars. They could light our way. At least that's what my little sister said before…" Albus cut off and shook his head again.
Edward nodded but he didn't say anything.
"How are your parents responding to this?" Edward said after a while looking down to Albus who was trying to find the best way to put his legs over the side of the structure. He looked up at him with a hesitant smile and rubbed the back of his neck.
"I haven't told them, they haven't seen me in a while," Albus said, looking away from the older boy. Edward raised an eyebrow and sat down next to him.
"You haven't told them that you might die? I may be an orphan but at least I told a friend of mine," Edward said, picking up his gun and looking at it.
Albus sighed and shook his head. "They won't care, not after everything that has happened,"
"What happened? Did you have a fight?" Edward asked, putting the gun down. Albus nodded, closing his eyes.
"Yes, it's my own fault really. I fell in love with well, never mind," Albus shook his head and looked away trying to hide the tears in his eyes. Edward looked at him and sighed.
"Who did you fall in love with?" Edward asked but Albus didn't answer as he picked up the gun next to him.
"We will die anyway, so it doesn't matter," Albus said, standing up and walking away from Edward.
"Doesn't matter? I would still tell my parents if I was going to die, I would. You say it doesn't matter!" Edward yelled over the barricade. However, Albus ignored him.
If he were to tell them, what would he say? He loved someone. Someone he shouldn't love. Albus closed his eyes and let out a deep breath that he was holding. It wasn't that long ago but...it was still in his memory.
"Should we be doing this?" his love asked as they sat on the riding swing in his love's back garden. Albus shook his head as he kicked his feet making it go a little. The bright full moon shined above them. It was midnight. The only time they could see each other without anyone noticing.
"No, but I love you and I don't want anyone to take that away," Albus said with a small smile on his face. His love shook their head and kissed him.
"Well, then we should make the most of it. Look," he said pointing to the sky. "The midnight stars are out. I'm named after one you know," his love said, laughing when Albus kissed him on their forehead.
"Really?" he said, voice rising as if he didn't already know that. His love laughed and kicked his feet. "There have been arguments on the streets. My grandfather tells me that no good can come from that," his love added. Albus shook his head and put his hand on his loved one's knee.
"Your…" Albus cut off when the back door opened.
"You! What the hell are you doing?!" the grandfather yelled face red. "You…are… that's against human nature! You're disgusting. Get out here! Now….! before I call the asylum! That's the best place for both of you! Leave and never come back!" Albus got to his feet and ran.
"No! Grandfather please," The grandfather laughed and grabbed his beloved's arm. Albus gasped. "Run Al!" his darling yelled. Albus nodded and ran out the gate. Albus heard his love plead as he ran.
He looked up again to see that there were still no stars in the sky, he wished there were. His love was not there to guide him. The night was quiet, not that he minded but he wished that…
" Love can make us do crazy things," Edward said, cutting Albus from his thoughts and memories. His hand was held out towards Albus. Albus took it. "My parents died for each other. My father told my mother to stay with me, but she didn't listen to him," Edward said, sitting down next to Albus who was staring at the other teens around them. "So, who are you fighting for? I'm sure your parents will understand." Albus shook his head. Tears were in his eyes.
"I do love someone but…" Albus shook his head again. Edward sat down next to him. "I wrote them a letter. I don't even know if…" Albus cut off and wiped the tears from his eyes. Edward nodded.
Both boys were quiet after a while. Albus didn't know what to do. The person that he loved… he wasn't supposed to love. How could he tell his new friend that? "Why do you love this person?" Edward cut him out of his thoughts. Why, why did he love them? Albus didn't know how to put it in words, but he had to try.
"They are the bravest person I know. They're so funny. I'm not supposed to be in love with them and yet…"
"Yet you are," Edward finished for him. Albus nodded and ran his hand over his black hair. "What's their name?" Edward asked with a bright smile and his eyes full of wonder. Albus would have laughed if he wasn't so nervous. Albus looked away not saying anything. How could he tell him that he wasn't in love with a woman? He'd end up arrested or worse. Then again, they were fighting for freedom. Maybe that was his freedom? His father wouldn't understand. Hell, Edward wouldn't understand.
'Just say it.' The voice in the back of his head said. Albus took a deep breath before he said in a quiet voice:
"His name is Scorpius. He's… I love him," he tried not to blush as he closed his eyes. He also didn't want to see the anger and disappointment in his eyes. However, when he opened them, all he saw was sadness.
"That's why you came to us," Edward said and both of them knew it was not a question. Edward ran a hand over his face and sighed, not saying anything else. Albus looked away to the others who were still sleeping before the war to come.
"If they find out that I'm in love with a boy they won't be proud of me. However, if they saw me dying for what I believe in, then maybe they will," Albus said after a short moment of silence. Edward nodded along in understanding. The two grew quiet again.
Edward looked at Albus who was staring off into the sky. His gun was at his side. Edward sighed. "I like to think that my father died happy. For most of my life, I hated him. Why did he leave me? Why did he leave me all alone in the world? Why did they both leave me? Now, I understand. They did it for me. If I die, I can see them again," Edward said, putting his hand on the side of the barricade.
"Won't they want you to live? Sure, you are fighting for what we believe in but this," Albus moved his hands around him. "This is not living." He closed his green eyes. Edward nodded.
"You may be right, but we can't give up now! We are so close! My mother never gave up. My parent's friends never gave up and I'm not backing down now!" Edward said, raising the gun in the air. However, this was met with silence. The older boy lowered his gun and sighed.
"I don't think we are going to win this," Albus said quietly. However, Edward didn't say anything as he walked back to the top of the barricade. Albus followed him.
Once they reached the top Albus looked to the city below them. The streetlamps were not lit, and the streets were empty. Albus let out a calming breath and looked up to the night sky, searching for Scorpius's star. It was just past midnight. There were still no stars. Nevertheless, he hoped that Scorpius was waiting for him.
