He couldn't speak. Why can't he speak? His twin brother could speak but he couldn't.
Romulus Lupin let out a quiet sigh as he sat in his room reading. It was a quiet afternoon, a soft rain patted on his window. It's been years since he lost his voice, but he still hates it. They were eleven now and going to Hogwarts soon. He doubts that he could go or at least make some friends. Romulus threw the book on the floor and ran his hand over his scarred face. He saves his brother from being a werewolf and this is what he gets?
"Rom? Are you packed?"his adopted father called from the other side of the door.
What did he expect him to answer? He can't speak. Romulus sighed again, got off his bed, and walked to the door. He opened the door and smiled at his adopted father. Harry Potter was his name. He already had two sons before he adopted him and his brother. They were great to him, but he felt like they didn't understand him.
"Hello Rom," his adopted father said with a small smile.
Romulus smiled back and pointed to his school trunk. "Good, you are packed. Remus, Sirius, and James want to know if you are going to hang out with them,"
'Will, they want me to hang out with them. I can't speak!' Romulus thought, running his hand through his sandy blonde and looking down. His adopted father let out a breath.
"Rom, they will love to have you hang out with them," he said as if reading his thoughts. Romulus let out a huff and walked to the stairs. Harry followed him. "You can do it, Rom," he said while they were on the stairs.
Romulus waved a little once he walked into the living room. "Rom!" Remus cried happily.
"Are you done packing?" Sirius asked, standing up and walking over to him. Romulus nodded looking down. "Well, come on, join us. We are talking about Hogwarts," Sirius said, bouncing on his feet. Romulus bit his lip and nodded.
'Yeah, talking,' he thought, sitting down in the chair by the fireplace. 'I can't talk about anything. Let alone say a spell. How am I supposed to go to Hogwarts? If I can't speak?' Romulus thought once James started talking about how wicked Hogwarts would be and the pranks they were going to pull.
Romulus looked over to Remus who was watching him. Romulus shook his head and put his head in his hands.
"Are you ok Rom?" Remus asked, cutting over to James who was talking. James looked at Romulus and stood up.
"Are you okay?" James echoed. Romulus nodded his head still in his hands. "Are you sure?" James asked, looking at Remus. Remus sighed but he didn't say anything. Romulus looked up from his hands. Tears were in his eyes.
'I'm fine!' he thought, wishing he could yell it out loud. He knew Remus heard it though. They both can read minds.
'Brother?' Remus' voice echoed in his head.
'I'm fine.' Romulus thought standing up. His chest heaving. 'Leave me alone!' He yelled in his mind before he ran out of the sitting room.
Romulus was on the back deck listening to the rain. His eyes were closed. He didn't want to run out of there yelling at Remus through their bond, but he had no choice. He can't speak and nothing will change that. He should just stay home. Hogwarts was no place for mutes. 'Rom?' Romulus heard his brother in his mind.
'What?' Romulus thought back. 'Sorry,' Romulus added, letting out a sigh.
"We are still going to Hogwarts together," Remus said out loud. He sat down next to him on the riding swing.
"Is that what you are upset over?" Remus asked. Romulus opened his eyes and shook his head. He looked in the yard. The rain was letting up but that's not what bothered him. He likes the rain. He misses running around laughing with his brother in the rain.
'No, I'm not upset, brother.' Romulus thought to Remus. 'I'm frustrated, how can I go to Hogwarts if I can't speak? I can't say a single spell or make friends with anyone.' Romulus thought, dropping his head again. Remus looked at Romulus and smiled a little.
"Rom, how could you think that? Look around you. We made friends with our adopted brothers. James and Sirius will always be here with us. Who knows, maybe we will find other friends. I know I'm the one to hide from people and say that I won't make friends, but we will, I know it," Romulus smiled at his brother and hugged him.
'But what about, spells?' Romulus thought to his brother. Remus smiled.
"We will figure it out," Remus said, holding out his hand after he stood up. Romulus gave him a half smile and took his brother's hand before they went back inside.
'Maybe school will be fun,' Romulus thought with a smile as he walked back over to his brothers and friends.
