A/N: Hey guys! I've decided I'm going to stop telling you all how frequently this will be updated… because obviously I can't stick to that. I love this story, and I desperately wish I had more time to write, but life just has other plans. I promise, I will post when I can… I'm just not saying how often that will be. Thank you for sticking with me though, and I do have a lot planned for JJ and Street.
…
Street looked on in horror as he jumped out of Black Betty. Two SUVs, no doubt from the BAU, were nearly totaled along the backroad. One was half off the road, lights still flashing, while the other was completely in the side ditch.
At first, it didn't feel like anyone was there. Street wondered how it could be so eerily silent after a car crash. Mangled metal and broken glass were everywhere. The headlights from Black Betty glinted off of the wreckage, and it only added to the ominous feel of the surroundings.
20-Squad sprang into action, but Street could barely move as the fear of what lay ahead encompassed his entire being. He was still denying the fact that JJ was here in the middle of this. She had to be back at the BAU, maybe Hotch got it wrong.
No, Hotch never got it wrong. She was here, and that thought shook Street out of his stupor. He rushed over to the SUV in the ditch, the one that took the worst of the hit, just as Luca was helping someone out of it.
It was Alvez, and though he seemed a little dazed, he didn't appear very injured. No one else seemed to be in that vehicle, so Street turned his attention to the other one.
Rossi was there, Chris helping to steady him, but Hondo and the others were gathered around the passenger seat.
Street ran over, but immediately wished he hadn't. Walker was the one still in the SUV, and he wasn't moving. Hondo caught Street's gaze and shook his head.
Damn. That made Street sick, but he continued in his frantic efforts to find JJ. If no one else was in that vehicle, where was she?
Wait a minute. Luca pulled Alvez out of the passenger seat… so where was the driver?
Street's heart momentarily stopped. Was JJ driving? He jogged around the crash site, looking for any indication that she was nearby.
Hondo joined him after also realizing they were missing one.
"Hondo, someone else was here. They were driving the other SUV. It had to be JJ, but where is she?" He was frantic, his mind conjuring up terrifying scenarios that grew worse with each passing second.
Hondo continued looking around the scene while Street ran over to Alvez. "Luke… Luke, listen to me. I need you to tell me who was driving your SUV."
The agent still looked a little dazed, but upon hearing Street's question, his eyes shot over to the vehicle. "Uh, JJ. JJ was driving. Is she okay? I think I blacked out."
"We can't find her."
"Scratch."
"Yeah, you guys were headed towards us to find Scratch. How did you wreck?"
"No, it was Scratch that caused it. It was an ambush."
Icey fear gripped Street's heart as he started piecing everything together. Did Lewis have JJ?
The rest of the officers started calling out JJ's name, desperately hoping that she was somewhere close by… and that Lewis hadn't managed to get away with her. No one was getting a response and it seemed more and more likely that JJ had been taken from the scene.
That was the only reasonable explanation for her absence.
Everything started to spin, and Street felt like he was going to be sick. How could this have happened? JJ wasn't even to supposed to have been here.
Street grabbed onto the side of Black Betty, convinced he was either going to throw up or pass out. Chris was suddenly next to him. He heard her speaking to him, but he couldn't make out what she was saying.
All he could focus on was the rising panic that came from the thoughts of JJ and their baby with this monster.
…
All JJ could feel was pain.
It was radiating through her entire body before she even opened her eyes. It made her nauseous and she took a moment to control her breathing.
Slow, deep breaths… in and out. Eventually the nausea subsided but the pain was still there.
JJ opened her eyes and was immediately confused. She was lying on a bed of sorts, in a cold concrete room. It was lined with medical equipment, but she knew it wasn't a hospital. Where was she, and why was she in so much pain?
She closed her eyes again as the pain in her abdomen increased. Oh no, the baby. Had something happened to her baby?
Her head was throbbing so intensely, she was having a hard time thinking straight.
She knew something was wrong with the baby. She didn't feel right in her stomach. Damn, what happened to her? She needed help, she needed medical attention… but where was she?
…
Hotch arrived on scene with the medical team, immediately demanding answers. He didn't have to hear much to realize how bad it truly was.
One of his agents dead, two injured… and one missing.
Hotch closed his eyes for a brief moment, a wave of guilt washing through him. He quickly shut that down though. Now wasn't the time to focus on how this could have been prevented. What he needed to focus on was his team, and finding his missing agent.
Rossi and Alvez were being transported to the hospital. EMTs said both were going to be fine, but Rossi would need surgery on his leg. Alvez was likely to be released as soon as the doctors checked him over. He already gave his account on what happened with the spike strips and semi.
Stephen had to be transported to the hospital as well due to protocol, and Hotch knew his wife would need to be contacted.
He looked around the scene, watching as the evidence team arrived. The area was now swarming with agents and officers. 20-Squad was still there, and Hotch could see Street over by the SWAT truck.
He was bent over, his hands on his knees, and Chris was there with a hand on his back and shoulders. Hotch jogged over to them.
Chris looked up upon his arrival. "He took the news about JJ hard. I'm worried about him."
"Street? Street, do you need medical?" Hotch was worried that the young officer was going into shock. He looked to be having trouble catching his breath. He grabbed him by the shoulders, forcing him up to meet his eyes. "Street?!"
That seemed to snap him out of it. "Hotch, we have to find her."
"I know. We've set up a perimeter, we're checking traffic cam footage of the surrounding area."
Street's eyes turned menacing, and he took a step towards Hotch. "What was she doing in the car, Hotch?"
"Street, now's not the time for this. I will explain later."
"No, you're going to explain now. You know as well as I do that she wasn't supposed to be out in the field! Why would you let her go?"
"Street, calm down." Hotch kept his voice even, knowing Street was just venting. He couldn't blame him either. "Let's focus on the search."
"Don't tell me to-"
"Street!" This time it was Hondo. He approached after hearing the raised voices. "Street, you need to pull yourself together. This isn't on Hotch."
The ringing of Hotch's cellphone halted any further conversation. He spoke for a minute, then turned back to Street, Hondo, and Chris. "That was Garcia. Local PD found the semi abandoned about three miles from here."
"Any sign of JJ?" Chris looked as worried as Hotch felt.
"There was some blood that is most likely hers, but it wasn't enough to be too alarming. Other than that, there wasn't anything to go on. I'm going to check in with ERT, then I'll head to the hospital." He turned to Hondo. "I'm sending units to canvass the area where the semi was found. Can your team help with the search?"
"Of course, I'll send them over that way." He instructed his team over the radio, and Chris went to go join the rest of the officers.
Street was about to follow her, but Hondo spoke up. "Street, you're not going."
Street spun around to face his sergeant. "What are you talking about? Of course I'm going."
"I can't have you in the field right now. Your judgement is clouded by the fact that it's JJ who is missing. You've already snapped at Hotch because of it, and I can't take the chance on anything worse happening." Hondo's tone brokered no disobedience… but Street was too pissed off to care.
He was about to go off on him, but Hotch intervened. "Street, you can go with me to the hospital, then you can stay at the BAU. We'll be working the case from there, and you will be informed on everything that's going on."
The young officer was still seething, but nodded nonetheless.
They briefly spoke to ERT, but nothing new had turned up from the search of the wrecked SUVs. With that, they hopped into Hotch's vehicle and took off to the hospital.
Hotch stayed silent during the drive, knowing that if Street had any more to say, now would be a good time to let it out while it was just the two of them.
Just as Hotch predicted, Street spoke up. "You never answered my question back there. Why did you let JJ in the field?"
"She was going to hang back when they breached the safehouse. She just wanted to be on site if Scratch was arrested. She wasn't supposed to be in any danger… but I should have stopped her." Guilt coursed through his being, knowing his pregnant agent was missing and he could have done something to prevent it. "I'm sorry, Street. I should've ordered her to stay at the BAU, but I didn't think… I didn't think anything like this could happen."
Street was silent for a long moment, but when Hotch looked over, he could've sworn there were tears in the younger man's eyes. "I can't lose her, Hotch. I can't lose either of them."
Hotch knew the pain Street was feeling, and he hated this situation with every fiber in his being. They had to find JJ, and Hotch would do everything in his power to make it happen.
One thing he knew for sure was how much strength his agent had. She would not go down without a fight… and that was the hope he was hanging onto. 'Just hold on, JJ.'
…
The pain was unrelenting, and JJ tried to move from the bed… but something was holding her back. She was restrained, and she cursed herself for not realizing it sooner. She had to get out of here, wherever here was, and get help for her baby. Listening carefully, it didn't sound like anyone was around. It was oddly quiet except for her own breathing.
The restraints, which were both sets of her own handcuffs, were locking her wrists to the bed. She jerked on them, testing the strength of the metal bars… she was met only with resistance. Gritting her teeth through the pain, she tried again. She pulled as hard as she could, over and over, but nothing would budge. She had to think of another way to get the cuffs off.
She let out a frustrated huff as she leaned back against the bed. Sweat covered her body, and every nerve ending seemed to be on fire.
Her head was still foggy, but she closed her eyes in an attempt to remember how she got here. The last thing she could think of was driving with Alvez. Where were they… wait. They were going after Scratch.
She could see shattered glass and crushed metal. Had there been an accident?
She remembered the old backroad they were taking… she could see it in front of her.
"Remember, we have to wait on SWAT to clear the building. Scratch has pulled out all the stops before, let's not go in tonight thinking anything less."
She was about to say something else when a rough jolt caused the SUV to swerve. She jerked the steering wheel to the left, trying to keep on the road… but they were now spinning and JJ leaned the vehicle into it, hoping to correct.
After a terrifying moment, it slowed to a stop. Breathing harshly from the shock, JJ looked over to Alvez. He seemed to be okay, so she directed her attention to her agents in the other SUV. "Are you guys alright?"
Rossi came over her earpiece. "We're fine." She was thankful for that, but she knew the tires had been blown in both vehicles… spike strips.
Before anything else could be said, a set of headlights pierced JJ's vision. They were intensely bright, and she didn't have time to react as she realized they were already right on top of the other SUV.
As if it was happening in slow motion, JJ watched in horror as a semi slammed into the rest of the team, knocking their SUV backwards before coming right for hers.
The truck was on JJ's side, and the only thought that crossed her mind was to protect her child. She barely had time to turn her body, wrapping her arms around her midsection, as the force of the impact sent the SUV off of the road.
JJ's head hit the steering wheel, and even over the ringing of her ears, the sound of crunching metal and shattering glass was deafening.
After a moment that felt like eternity, the SUV halted. JJ tried to move, but pain ricocheted through her entire body. Her head was spinning, and for a moment she thought she was going to pass out.
Panic flooded her system as she thought about the baby… and her team. She tried to look towards the passenger seat, but a figure outside the SUV caught her eye. Rossi? Walker?
No, that wasn't right. The figure came closer and even through the fog that her brain was currently in, JJ could tell that wasn't one of her agents. The driver of the semi?
He was suddenly right in front of her, and a feeling of dread washed over her as she saw that it was Scratch. She tried to free herself, but her seatbelt was stuck and she was pinned. Her next thought was to grab her gun, but she wasn't quick enough.
Scratch reached through the shattered window and grabbed her sidearm before she could. Suddenly, a mask was being pressed against her face, and she fought against it… but the need to breathe took over and the substance quickly filled her lungs. The effect of the drugs was immediate… and JJ was enveloped in darkness.
JJ's eyes shot open as the memory flooded her senses. She knew Scratch's drug of choice, so if he stuck to his usual M.O., that substance wouldn't be good for the baby… and that was on top of a car crash.
She sent up a quick prayer, knowing the odds of her baby surviving this were way too slim. Tears sprung to her eyes and her heart broke at the thought, but she didn't have long to process it as the door in front of her flew open.
Scratch loomed in the doorway, a menacing smile covering his features. "Are you ready for some fun?"
