A Japanese Weresheep in Mutsuba Town

Summary:

There are some forms of alien activity even MIK turns a blind eye to. The truly alien activity between Chupataro and Ohdo Yuhi, for instance.

Chapter 36: The Big Mutsuba Flood (Nyandestar's Tears)

"Chupaa, the weather changed fast, chupa!"

"On the bright side, you don't have dessert on your head anymore!"

Yuhi and Chupataro stumbled into Asaka's office drenched as Kawai Tell, who was scowling at them intensely behind Asaka's excavator desk.

"Yuamu, Yudias, everyone…What's going on?"

"Now that everyone is present, I'll get straight to the point!" Asaka took the floor. "This morning, at 0800 hours, our ship encountered an astrological phenomenon in the vacuum of space that's resulted in environmental controls malfunctioning. I'm sure you've all noted the unusual weather today."

"Yeah! No kidding!" Yuhi snarked.

"At first, this was a minor inconvenience, but as you can see, the rain has returned with a vengeance. For the time being, I have ordered all Mutsuba Town residents to relocate underground to the Alien Residential Area for their own safety, and have erected bay doors throughout to divert the floodwater away from the same."

"Rovian-sama is down there right now, coordinating the operation," Yuna explained.

"With the information Yudias has provided on Velgearian technology, we have managed to isolate life support from environmental controls to prevent the problem from spreading, but without identifying the underlying cause, our refuge is only temporary."

"You mean…"

"If we don't resolve the problem, we will all be underwater, if we don't run out of oxygen first!"

"Then, what do we do?"

Manabu unclogged his throat like a cat forcing out a hairball. "Coinciding with the 0800 event, MIK detected a unique heat signature not included in the ship's existing crew complement."

"Translation?"

"The encounter has brought something aboard. We have an alien stowaway. Among us."

"EHHHHH? You mean the alien is in this room? Who is it?" Manya was dizzy with fright.

"No, I don't mean it's in this room!" Manabu got frustrated. "But it is here, somewhere in the ship!"

"And MIK's scans haven't been able to pinpoint the alien based on its heat signature again since environmental controls started going haywire," Nyandestar added.

"Hang on. Manabu's cough has given me an idea!"

"Yuhi? Do you know something?"

"Environmental controls. They're piped through Val-Valvelgear like a nervous system. They're all connected. Now if I were this hostile alien lifeform, the piping's where I'd hide out!"

"Brilliant, Yuhi!"

"Heh. Thanks, Yudias. If I can access the hub where all the pipes collide, I could manually override environmental controls to eject steam through the pipes, forcing whatever it is out of the ship through the exhaust."

"But the ventilation shafts are too narrow, Yuhi! You won't fit through them!" Yuamu contested.

"Where there's a will, there's a way!"

"That's inspirational and everything, but I'm not sending you in there just so you can get trapped halfway!" Asaka nixed the notion. "We need somebody small enough who can crawl through the vents."

"Not Chupataro!" Yuhi enclosed his arms around Chupataro.

"You'll volunteer for a suicide mission, but insist Chupa stay behind, chupa? Chupa doesn't know whether you're brave or reckless, chupa!"

"Badlove!"

"At your service, Asaka-ojosama!"

"I'll do it."

"Coo?"

"Nyandestar?" Manabu was vehemently against it. "Purrposterous! You can't!"

"I have so much to answer for," she beseeched Asaka, but not Manabu. "Please…Allow me to do this."

Asaka knew there was nothing she could say that would change Nyandestar's mind. "We're counting on you. I want everyone else to proceed down to the Alien Residential Area with the others! Yuhi, you guide Nyandestar to the hub and instruct her how to initiate the ejection sequence!"

"Roger!"

The "adults" of Mutsuba Town reassembled around a maintenance terminal Yuhi could monitor Nyandestar's progress from. From there, they separated off into two groups: Yuhi and Nyandestar, and those bound for the Alien Residential Area.

Yuamu hugged Yuhi and told him to be careful, Yudias called Yuhi a true warrior of Velgear for his heroism, and Chupataro…

"Come back to Chupa in one piece, chupa." Chupataro cupped Yuhi's hands in his robot's and blew into them so Yuhi wouldn't forget the sensation of his breath.

As for Manabu and Nyandestar, their status was still complicated.

"Nyandestar…"

"Manabu-chan, I'm off to complete my assignment."

They left it at that.

Yuhi attached a transmitter to Nyandestar's collar so they could remain in contact, and she took off into Val-Valvelgear's vents through a grate.

With her Nyandestar Eye, she could see in the dark without the aid of an external light.

"Do you read me?"

"I read you," Yuhi spoke into his headset. "I have the schematics. Follow my directions to the hub."

"Received."

He ushered her through a series of rights and lefts, watching her blinking dot on the map on his screen.

"Yuhi."

"Turn right at the next bend."

"Y-yes, but no…It's about Manabu-chan."

"Manabu?"

"Do you…Do you think he hates me? I betrayed his trust. Said awful things and betrayed all of you to get close to The*Luge to avenge my family and planet."

"None of us is blaming you for that."

"How can you forgive what I've done?"

"I've had practice."

"Because of Chupataro?"

"He had his secrets. And he was lying to me since the beginning. But I get it. It's not easy, being an alien on Earth. Even with his Gold Earth Permit, he was still different. I think that's why he loves Meeeg-chan. Her world was brighter than the world he lived in. But…I don't want him to ever feel that loneliness again. That's why, even with the lies – after all he did – I can still forgive him. I can still love him, no matter what!"

Nyandestar gasped.

"I know Manabu has forgiven you. You just have to be willing to forgive yourself."

"Th-thank you…Yuhi."

A second dot blinked onscreen and rapidly approached Nyandestar's location.

"AHH!"

"What is it?"

"There's something there with you! Move! Nyandestar, get out of there! It's moving right towards you!"
