Summary:

There are some forms of alien activity even MIK turns a blind eye to. The truly alien activity between Chupataro and Ohdo Yuhi, for instance.

Chapter 56: NieR:Karutumata

"Yuhi? Are we playin' hide and seek?"

"Put a lid on it, Damamu! They'll hear you!"

"They?"

Red-Eyes Black Dragon. Scores of aliens, heaping supplies onto hover dollies.

"Sukai said they'd be here."

"We are." A hooded individual got the jump on them.

"Ooooh?"

"You found me out…"

"Correction: I knew you'd come."

"You sayin' you can see the future?"

"We left signs for the Informant where we'd be."

"And why would you risk exposin' yourselves?"

"Two reasons, really."

"Oh yeah?"

"The first is to arrange a sit-down with the leader of the human resistance, Ohdo Yuamu. As her brother, we'd like you to discuss it with her."

"Why dontcha do it yourself?"

"That, I can't tell you."

"What's the second reason?"

"To have a Rush Duel with you."

"Sorry, Rush Duels are kids' stuff."

"Yet where has just snooping got you? Your heart is full of conflict. Are you seeking a place to die? Or the last hope in Pandora's box?"

I don't know anymore.

"If you defeat me, I'll tell you a secret you don't already know about the people who have been carded by MIK. About Kaburagi Chupataro."

"You know about Chupataro?"

"I know a great many things. I am prognosticator."

"Yuhi! Do it! Duel~!" Damamu encouraged giddily.

"If there's no other way…" Yuhi cursed under his breath. "Damamu!"

Damamu was back at the speed of light with Yuhi's Deck. As he didn't want Yudias knowing he borrowed Valvelgear, Yuhi bummed a loaner off Damamu, loading his cards into Damamu's Duel Disk and assuming a stance he hadn't in a long time.

"Ohdo Yuhi."

"Captain of Red-Eyes Black Dragon's Sixth Division."

"So you're a member of the Sevens."

"That I am."

"So long as you have info on Chupataro, I don't care who you are. Go Rush."

"Go Rush. My turn! Draw! I summon three Portents of Ruin!" (Level 1 FIRE Angel/Effect ATK 600 DEF 600)

Angel-Types?

"Portent of Ruin's effect! I declare Monster, Magic, or Trap and reveal the top card of my Deck. If I call correctly, I can add that card and cards with the same name from my Deck to my hand. If I'm wrong, it is sent to the bottom of my Deck, and I take 3000 damage."

"A crapshoot, huh?"

"Not for a seer like me. The top card of my Deck…is a Magic Card!" The sixth Captain proved he'd predicted correctly. "I add Desert Wandering and two additional copies from my Deck to my hand!"

"Pure luck."

"Now for the second Portent of Ruin's effect! The top card of my Deck is a Magic Card!" He repeated the process. "I add Painful Exodus and two additional copies from my Deck to my hand!"

"Sunava –"

"The final Portent of Ruin's effect! The top card of my Deck is yet another Magic Card! Three Horeb's Steeles to my hand!"

"Uwaa! He's good at guessing!" Damamu giggled.

"No, that's not it."

"Hm?"

"You. Your Deck doesn't have any Trap Cards, and has very few Monsters Cards, doesn't it? That's how you're beatin' the odds."

"If that's what you wish to believe, be my guest."

He's got eleven cards in his hand. What's his deal? Is this some kind of strategy?

"I set three cards, and end my turn."

"My turn. I draw. I pay 1000 Life Points, and activate Jointech Generator. This turn, whenever I summon a Level 7 or higher Machine-Type monster, I draw two cards." (Yuhi LP 4000 ↓ 3000)

"I see."

"I summon Tamabot, and activate Tamatamagachance. By sending Tamabot and the top three cards of my Deck to the Graveyard, if there's a Normal Monster among the top three, I get to Special Summon a Level 4 or lower Normal Monster from my Graveyard. Or if it's Tamabot, up to two more Tamabots from my Graveyard."

"I gatcha! Three Tamabots!" Damamu counted.

The faces of Yuhi's Tamabots were sullener than Damamu remembered.

"I release two Tamabots to Advance Summon Jointech Tinplatesaurus." (Level 7 EARTH Machine/Effect ATK 2300 DEF 2000)

Yuhi didn't bother with Tinplatesaurus' summon chant.

"I draw two cards due to Jointech Generator's effect. Then I send one card from my hand to the Graveyard to activate the Magic Card, Tamatamareincarnation. This lets me return the two Tamabots I released to my hand, and I re-summon them."

"Tama!"

"I release them again, and Advance Summon Jointech Rex." (Level 7 EARTH Machine/Effect ATK 2500 DEF 1500)

Rex stomped onto the field.

"I draw two. Tamatamiracle. The last Tamabot on my field is treated as two sacrifices when Advance Summoning. I release it to Advance Summon Jointech Stegosilos." (Level 7 EARTH Machine/Effect ATK 2500 DEF 1500)

"Turboing out three Ace Monsters. Not bad," his opponent admitted.

"I draw two. I get rid of two EARTH Machine-Types in my hand to use Jointech Stegosilos's effect, destroying two monsters on your field with 1600 or less DEF."

Stegosilos unleashed a barrage of missiles, blowing up two of the Captain's Portents of Ruin.

"I attack the remaining Portent of Ruin with Tinplatesaurus."

Tinplatesaurus bisected the flaming seraph with its box cutter tail. (Sixth Captain LP 4000 ↓ 2300)

"I know your set cards are Magic Cards, so I'll finish it with Rex and Stegosilos."

"You won't! By revealing three Desert Wanderings in my hand when I receive a direct attack, the desert's unbearable sand and sunlight reduce the ATK of all monsters on your field to 1000 for this battle!" (Sixth Captain LP 2300 ↓ 300)

"Ch! Turn end."

"My turn! Draw! Hide your face in fear of the God of Avram, the God of Ishzark, and the God of Jakob! Maximum Summon! Burning Bush Triniton!" (Level 10 FIRE Plant/Maximum/Effect MAXIMUM ATK 0)

Damamu did a backflip. "MAX-IMUM!"

It isn't just MIK that has them?

"Prostrate yourself before God! I return three cards from my hand to the Deck to activate Burning Bush Triniton's effect! The monster in your center Monster Zone – in other words, Jointech Rex – is switched to Defence Position!"

Rex was forced into Defence Position.

"I send the top card of my Deck to the Graveyard, and activate Triniton's second effect! For each card with the same name sent to my Deck by its previous effect, it deals 400 damage to you!"

"1200!" Damamu filled in Yuhi's reaction. (Yuhi LP 3000 ↓ 1800)

"I return the Painful Exoduses on my field and the Horeb's Steeles in my hand to the Deck to activate Triniton's third effect! Because Jointech Rex is in Defence Position, all monsters in your adjacent Monster Zones are destroyed!"

No!

"PARTING OF THE RED SEA!"

Jointech Tinplatesaurus and Jointech Stegosilos were cleansed by red waves.

That's why he packed his hand with so many cards! To activate all his Maximum's effects!

"The Horeb's Steeles I returned trigger, reducing Jointech Rex's DEF by 200 each!"

"By 600?" (DEF 1500 ↓ DEF 900)

"This is the real doomsday! While in Maximum Mode, Triniton gains 3000 ATK by its own effect, and its attacks pierce! Triniton attacks Jointech Rex! I AM THAT I AM!"

"2100!" Damamu squealed. (Yuhi LP 1800 ↓ 0)

Goddammit! Yuhi punched the dirt.

"Don't worry. Our Maximums aren't linked with MIK's system. We will not card you."

"You might as well card me. I'm…useless."

"If I did that, you wouldn't be able to save him."

"Save him?"

"I won this Duel, but I'll tell you anyway: The people who have been carded are still alive."

"What?" Yuhi's heart skipped a beat. "Chupataro, he's…He's still alive?"
