Chapter one
I apologize in advance. TW - SA(not super graphic, short scene) So the first couple of Station 19 stories I've posted haven't been fluffy or angsty(they've been something in-between) but this one will be angsty. For some reason my best writing is when I'm writing angst. Anyways though, I apologize in advance because I'm about to put our girl through hell.
I'm not great with medical terms or medical procedures so I'm gonna try to limit how much of that I write about. Especially since that won't be the main topic of the story. Writing a Station 19 fic, not Grey's. Grey's characters will, however, make appearances. Especially in this first chapter. I get that not everyone likes angst so you may not be super anxious to read this story, but the most angst will probably just be within the first 2 or 3 chapters and then it'll lighten up and get better so please just give me a chance.
Andy had just parked in the Station 19 parking lot, having just come from a meeting with Chief Ross. She was excited to let everyone know that she was the new captain of 19. She got out of her car and locked it when she heard footsteps behind her.
Andy turned around "Hey, what are you guys doing here? You're not allowed to be back here." Andy told them trying to escort them out of the station's parking lot.
"Oh, so we're not allowed in this parking lot but you're allowed to kill a man that was like our brother?"
Andy's eyes went wide. "Are you talking about Jeremy? Because I didn't kill him. It was self-defense."
"You killed a man. There's no excuse for that." Two of the three men move forward and grab Andy's arms and put a cloth over her mouth while Andy is trying to scream for help. Two of the attackers were tying her hands together behind her back while the other punched her in the face. First near her eye and then her nose which caused her to cry out and double over. Taking advantage of Andy's position, the same man punched her in the stomach and that led to Andy falling to the ground where all three men started kicking her and didn't stop until she was close to passing out.
Andy's button-up work shirt came loose, leaving her chest exposed, her bra showing since she wasn't wearing a t-shirt. She saw through her good eye that the men were all chuckling and smirking looking down at her. She felt one of the men pull down her bra and roughly grabbed her boobs, making her cry out in pain while the other men pulled down her pants. She felt her underwear being pulled down and began to cry. So this is what Jeremy was going to do to me that night. Andy thought. Andy felt the men playing with her, dehumanizing her and she felt humiliated. All she felt was pain when the men started to enter her. She was sobbing into the cloth they gagged her with and was finding it hard to breathe. She felt her throat being grabbed and was trying to breathe through her nose but she was starting to get dizzy as she felt another blow to the face. And then another. And another. And the blows just kept on coming as she saw stars and became unconscious.
The men all smirked at each other and pulled Andy's work pants up, fixing her belt and buttoning up her work shirt before running out of the parking lot.
Andy was left in the middle of the parking lot, unconscious, in the cold, still gagged and bound while everyone was still inside totally oblivious as to what just happened to their friend right outside the station.
3 hours later
Carina knew it was late, she knew that her wife was most likely asleep but she couldn't sleep at home and she just wanted to see her wife, hoping that it would help her get some sleep before she had to go to the hospital. Carina had just parked her car near the entrance of the parking lot and when she came out of her car she saw something on the ground, more specifically, someone. She ran over to the body and when she saw that it was Andy she was shocked. She saw a big cut on Andy's forehead and that she had a broken nose, a bad one at that and that she had a black eye. Carina brought two shaky fingers to Andy's neck and when she felt how cold she was she was extremely worried as to how long Andy had been outside. Carina was scared that wouldn't find a pulse. She had her fingers on Andy's pulse point and breathed a sigh of relief when she felt a faint pulse. Carina pulled out her phone called Maya, not wanting to leave Andy alone.
Carina dialed Maya's number and then put her phone on the ground, putting it on speaker. She prayed that her wife was still awake and while she was in that thought process it took her a few seconds to notice Maya's voice coming through the phone.
"Carina, it's late. What are you doing up? Don't you have work today? What are you-"
"Maya! Maya stop. I need your help. I don't have time to explain but someone's down in the parking lot and they need help. Please hurry."
Maya tells her that she'll be out in a few minutes with a gurney and some help so Carina just waits and tries to wake Andy up. "Andy." nothing "Andy, I need you to wake up. Please wake up. You're the glue of this house. They can't lose you." pauses again to gently shake her when she notices that her shirt wasn't buttoned up properly and her heart stopped and blood turned cold. She dialled 911 and told them that they needed to get down to Station 19 right away, that she had a sexual assault victim that needed to get to a hospital ASAP but that they already had an Aid Car, that she just needed the SPD to come so they could document what had happened. "Put yourself in the best position to be believed" Carina had heard Ben tell Andy after she was attacked 8 months ago.
Maya, Vic and Warren came out with the medical equipment and gurney but stopped short when they saw who was down. After the brief hesitation they ran the rest of the way over and they were about to access her when Carina told them that police needed to get pictures of the scene before they could move or help her. The cops moved quickly once they got there. Only taking a minute to take a few pictures of Andy's face, the bondage on her wrists and the position she was in.
"Go ahead and treat her. We'll meet you at the hospital after we get the CCTV footage from the station's camera." the female officer told them while Warren worked on untying the cloth from her mouth and the ties on her wrists. Once they got the cloth off her mouth they saw that she had a cut on her lip. Maya and Vic were working on getting her hands untied and when they finally got her wrists free they saw the burn that the rope had created. All three firefighters worked to turn her onto a backboard when they noticed the same thing Carina had. That Andy's shirt was button-upped wrong. They looked at each other, each thinking the same thing.
"Vic, I need you to take Andy's shirt off. Maya, check her pulse. Carina, look at Andy's pants and tell me if you see anything." Ben said, realizing that this was more than a regular attack just as Carina did. Carina just looks at Ben with a frown and nods her head, confirming his thought that Andy was beaten as well as raped when she noticed there was blood on her pants.
"She has a weak pulse. It's really slow." Maya told them while trying to keep her tears at bay.
Vic was taking her shirt off and gasped when she saw the bruises that were forming on her stomach and the handprint bruises on her throat. "We need to get her to Grey Sloan right now. She could have internal bleeding or broken ribs and a collapsed lung." Maya and Ben worked to get Andy hooked up to a heart monitor and when they ended up seeing that she didn't have a pulse anymore Maya started CPR and waited for the machine to charge so they could shock her.
It took just one try for them to get Andy's pulse back and since she was stable they loaded her up in the Aid Car. Maya was in the front driving while Ben, Carina and Vic were in the back working on Andy. Warren noticed that all her stats were down too low and as he finished intubating Andy she started to code. Vic and Carina both shed a tear, not believing that this was happening. While the two women were in shock Ben took charge and charged the ECG machine "Clear." nothing happened. "Check for a pulse Hughes."
Vic put two shaky fingers on Andy's neck. "Nothing."
"Charging to 300." Ben waits for it to charge "Clear!"
It was a terrifying five seconds before they heard beep beep beep and all sighed in relief.
"We're two minutes out, guys," Maya told them from up front. "How's she doing?"
"Well considering we just had to do CPR and shock our best friend and glue of the house three times, I'd say she's doing horrible. I mean did you see her Maya? From the red marks on her wrists to the black eye and broken nose and more. I mean, who the hell would do this to her?" Vic said, letting a few more tears out, hating that there was nothing she could do for Andy at this moment.
"I don't know who would do it to her but she was in that parking lot, alone, for what must've been hours. She was freezing when I found her." Carina told Maya. She turned to look at Ben and Vic. "Did you guys not have any calls? You guys didn't hear her cry out at all or anything?"
"We had a big call like four hours ago so everyone's asleep. Ben and I were asleep in the lounge when Maya ran in saying she needed help because someone was injured in the parking lot." Vic told her "I just never thought this could happen to Andy. She's been teaching self-defense classes. I don't get it. She was drunk when Jeremy attacked her and was able to fight him off so what was so different about tonight?" Vic asked, looking at Carina.
"I think there was more than one attacker."
Vic had her jaw drop briefly and was about to say something when she heard Maya say that they were at the hospital. They were surprised when they were met by Dr. Grey, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Hunt, Dr. Pierce and Dr. Shepherd at the ER doors instead of residents and when the doctors saw the state Herrera was in, it made tears well up in all of their eyes, not believing that one of their closest friends and one of SFD's best firefighters was in such a state. Hunt and Pierce rush her to a trauma room while Grey, Bailey, Amelia and Carina were behind them, all in shock with concern written all over their faces.
Once they got Andy into a trauma room the three friends knew they'd have to stop there.
No one knew what to say but Vic broke the silence "One of us needs to take the Aid Car back to the station."
"I'll bring it back," Ben said rubbing Maya and Vic's arms, "You guys stay. I'll call Ross and ask for subs as well."
"Thanks, Ben. We'll give you updates when we get them." Maya told him and he just nodded and walked out of the ER.
The two remaining friends were left to watch as Andy once again coded as Miranda and Meredith were getting her changed into a hospital gown. They were glued to the scene in front of them. They watched them shock her. Then again. And again. A few seconds after the third shock was administered Maya and Vic saw that Andy's heart rate went up and her pulse was restored but she still wasn't awake and that was starting to concern the doctors.
Carina came out of the room "I need you girls to go to the waiting room. I know she's like your sister but what we need to do now isn't something you should see." Maya and Vic try to protest but Carina just raises a hand. "Vic, Maya. Please. I need to get back in there. I'll come get you when we have some updates." The two women just nod and make their way to the waiting room.
Meanwhile in the trauma room Merideth and Owen were looking to see if there was any internal bleeding with a portable ultrasound while Amelia was on standby to patch up the cut on Andy's forehead. When Merideth and Owen confirmed that Andy didn't have any internal bleeding they moved to let Amelia stitch the cut on Andy's head and wrapped the wound with gauze. Once she was done she left the room, along with Pierce and Hunt. Carina asked Merideth and Bailey to help her with the rape kit. Merideth went to grab a camera to take pictures of Herrera's injuries and while she was Carina began to clean up the blood that was still on Andy's legs, trying not to tear up looking at the handprint bruises on her thighs. When Merideth came back with the camera she, Bailey and Carina worked in silence, hating that they had to perform this exam on one of their closest friends. Meredith took pictures of the bruises that littered her body, when needed Bailey would move the hospital gown to view the bruises that littered her chest, stomach and thighs. Photos of the cuts and bruises on her legs, arms and the scraps on her hands, and the wounds on her face. Once she was done Merideth went outside the room to talk to the police about the pictures and to tell them they were performing the rest of the rape kit now and would have it ready in a few minutes. Carina wanted to get this done right, she owed it to Andy, but she also wanted to move as quickly as possible in case Andy woke up. Carina finished the exam a few minutes later after making sure that there's no additional tearing and that the bleeding had stopped and then handed the bags with Andy's clothes, and other evidence to the cops outside Andy's room.
"We'll take these down to the station and have them placed into evidence along with the CCTV footage" Carina nodded "We have this new detective from Chicago here. We'll hand the case off to her and have her come here."
"I have a feeling she won't want to talk to male cops, so thank you." Carina spoke
"IHere's the detective's number. Just call and let her know when Andy wakes up and is ready to talk. We'd like her statement as soon as possible."
Carina just nods and takes the detective's card. "Thank you. Now I need to get back in there to do a secondary check to make sure we didn't miss any injuries." The officers nod and walk out of the emergency room.
Carina enters the room again and looks over Andy and when she lifted her right arm she looked at her wrist and saw that it looked swollen.
Carina looks over at Merideth "Hey, Mer."
"Ya?"
"Can you page Link? I want him to take a look at Andy's wrist. Help determine if it's only a sprain or fracture or if it's something more." Carina looks up and sees Merideth nod her head.
"Merideth, you stay. I'll go. I need to go check up on some patients anyways." Bailey said, walking out of the room.
Carina sighed and sat down on one of the chairs in the room and put her head on her hands after she had taken off her gloves.
"You okay, Carina?" Meredith asked, putting a hand on Carina's shoulder.
"No." Carina looks up and towards the bed, hating seeing Andy so broken and battered. "Andy has been through so much shit lately and it just hit me that while she's been helping everyone at the station, lifting the teams' morale, even with Beckett as captain, I don't even know if anyone's been looking out for her since she was transferred to 23 last year and after her divorce was finalized with Robert. I do know that Vic stayed with her for a couple weeks after her attack months ago but I don't think it's gone beyond that." Carina was going to continue her rant when she got interrupted by Link coming in with a portable X-Ray machine.
"Hey, this should just take a minute." LInk said, coming closer to the bed. He picked up Andy's wrist and used the portable X-Ray machine to view her wrist. "It looks like it's just fractured. Can just put some ice on it, get the swelling down and then put a brace on it and it should be okay in a couple of weeks." Link said, packing up the equipment and putting an ice pack on Andy's wrist and wrapped a tensor bandage around it to make sure it stays in place. He nods at Grey and Carina and walks out of the room.
Grey and Carina do one last check over on Andy when a couple of nurses come into the trauma room to help move Andy to a private patient room. The doctors also brought in a couple more chairs to the room, knowing that Andy would probably get a lot of visitors who wouldn't want to leave until they were forced to.
Grey and Carina look at each other, Meredith about to say something when Miranda walks in.
"Is she stable?"
Meredith and Carina nod their heads
"I'll go update Hughes and Bishop." Bailey told them "I'll bring them back here when I'm done." Bailey didn't wait for a reply from the two women as she walked out of the room. Bailey walked down the hall to the waiting room and walked right up to Vic and Maya when she spotted them pacing back and forth
"How bad is it?" Vic asked, worry etched in her voice.
"She has a couple of cracked ribs, a fractured wrist. No internal bleeding." Vic and Maya both let out a sigh of relief. "But Carina did confirm that she was raped." Vic lets a few tears fall and Maya just brings a hand to her face and rubs her forehead. "You can follow me to her room and let everyone at 19 know if you want, or you can wait for them to come here and tell them in person."
"We'll let them know when we see them. I don't think this is the type of news you tell a group of people that are like family over the phone." Maya said.
Meredith scoffs.
Maya was about to ask why she scoffed when the five women heard a groan of pain come from the bed.
"Herrera, can you hear me?" Meredith asked, moving to the bed. Got no response. "Andy, can you squeeze my hand or open your eyes for me?" It took a second but Meredith felt Andy squeeze her hand as well as open her eyes. "There she is. Andy, do you know where you are?"
"Hospital." Before Meredith could ask another question Andy spoke again. "I remember everything." Andy tries to move but lets out another groan so Miranda goes over to Andy's IV and pushes some more pain meds. "I was coming to the station to surprise everyone."
"Surprise us with what?" Maya and Vic asked at the same time.
Andy turned her head to look at the end of the hospital bed where they were standing.
"I got some news from Chief Ross and I wanted to talk to everyone and let them know what was going on when three men came out of nowhere." Andy paused, choking up a little. "Shouldn't I be talking to the cops about this?"
Carina nodded. "Yes, you should. I'll call the detective SPD said to call when you woke up." Andy nodded and laid her head down on the hospital pillow. Carina came back into the room a few minutes later. "The detective said she won't be able to come down for an hour or so since she's entering the rape kit results into evidence." Carina paused. "While we're waiting, can you try to get some rest.?"
Andy doesn't give a verbal response. She just nods her head and closes her eyes, a couple tears falling.
Future chapters will not be this long. I just couldn't stop writing. I hope you enjoyed it. I had trouble writing some of this and I know a group of 5 doctors wouldn't be waiting by an ER but I only know Grey's characters that appear on Station 19 so that's the reasoning behind no residents helping out. I think Schmitt is the only resident I know, lol.
Anyways, thank you so much for taking the time to read this new story of mine. I'm also willing to take any promts anyone may have.
