Hello! This is my first fic for New Game! I actually read the manga and watched the anime a few years ago but didn't write anything for the series then. But I recently went through the series again and found myself craving some HajiYun.
So here's my first HajiYun fic. It's set after the epilogue of the manga. So Rin and Kou are married, Hajime and Yun are working on a smartphone game called DDBZ and Hajime is the director for that while Yun is the art director for it. And that's all you need to know for this fic.
I hope you enjoy the story!
Disclaimer: I do not own New Game! It belongs to Tokunou Shoutarou.
My Beloved Idiot
"These models should be finished by the end of this week."
"Ok."
"So we'll be able to start workin' on all the promotional art next week."
"Ok."
"I'll make sure the key visual is somethin' ya love."
"Ok."
Yun resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow. What was with those bland responses? Was Hajime even listening to her? It surely didn't feel like she was.
"...I'm really lookin' forward to DDBZ's release, Hajime. I think it's gonna be real popular."
"Ok."
Yun's features pulled into a frown. That confirmed it. Hajime wasn't listening to a word she was saying. But Hajime looked like she was thinking hard about something. Maybe some serious issue with the game had cropped up? Being a director must be hard. She was sure of that. But even so, Hajime was the one who called her to this meeting room. The least she could do was listen.
"Hajime."
"Ok."
"Hajime."
"Huh?"
"Could ya stop starin' at the table and look at me?"
Hajime looked up and blinked. Then she gave Yun a sheepish grin and let out a nervous laugh. "Ah, sorry. I was thinking about... Stuff."
"Is anythin' wrong? We're not havin' issues with fundin', are we? Or is there somethin' ya wanna change? We still have time, so if there are any changes ya want, you can tell me. We'll try our best to-"
"No, no, no." Hajime waved her hands in front of her face. "It's nothing like that. Don't worry, Yun. Everything is running smoothly and according to schedule right now."
"Oh. That's good."
"...Yes."
"Then... What were ya thinkin' about?"
"I, uh... I was thinking about Yagami-san."
Yun furrowed her eyebrows. "What about her? She's not even workin' on DDBZ."
"Eh? Well, no, she's not working on this game. But she's working on a game with her wife. That must be nice."
Yun threw Hajime a bewildered look. "I'll never understand what goes on in that brain of yours. How exactly are ya director again?"
"Wha- Hey!"
"I'm sorry but you're makin' no sense, Hajime." Yun started to stand up. "I have a lot of work to do so I'll be leavin' now."
Hajime's eyes widened. "Wait, wait, wait! Don't go!"
"Why?"
"I need to talk to you about something."
Yun had the feeling that whatever Hajime wanted to talk about was going to be utterly insignificant. But she was curious. And she also couldn't say no to that face. Hajime was staring up at her with such pleading eyes that Yun couldn't bring herself to walk away.
Yun sat down and cleared her throat. "W-Well, I suppose I could stay here for a few more minutes."
The sheer relief in Hajime's eyes made Yun feel all funny inside. She hated how easily Hajime could make her feel so... So weird. Yun didn't know what to call this inexplicable feeling that welled up in her chest whenever she saw Hajime. An uncomfortably comforting feeling that made her feel like she was going crazy.
Hajime looked away, a nervous air about her. "Uh... I... Well, you know how... Argh!"
Yun blinked in confusion as Hajime pulled at her hair in evident frustration. "Hajime, what's wrong with ya today?"
"This is just so hard to say!"
"What is?"
When Hajime didn't respond, Yun let out a sigh. Something was obviously bothering the girl. And Hajime arranged this 'meeting' because she wanted to talk. So why was she hesitating like this now?
"You can tell me, ya know? I promise I won't yell at ya or anythin'."
Hajime bit her lip. "It's just..."
"It's just...?"
"It's just that I want what Yagami-san has now!"
"Which is...?"
"Being able to work on a game with her wife!"
Yun gave Hajime a blank stare. "You... Ya want... What?"
Hajime looked Yun straight in the eye. "I want to make a game with my wife."
Yun was now so confused it wasn't even funny. This had to be the single most ridiculous thing Hajime had ever said to her. In her life. "Wha- What do ya mean by that? Your wife? You don't have a wife."
"That's what I want to address!"
Yun let out an exasperated sigh. "What is that even supposed to mean? Ya plannin' on gettin' married now?"
"Yes."
Yun's jaw dropped. "Wh- What?!"
"I want to make a game with my wife like Yagami-san. So I need to get married first. And that's what I'm going to do."
Yun blinked. How the hell was Hajime saying that with a straight face? "You... You... You can't just say that!"
Hajime raised an eyebrow. "Why not? I want to get married now. I think I've spent enough of my life single."
Yun pursed her lips. "So you're gonna start randomly datin' people now in the hopes of findin' someone ya can marry? It's not that easy, Hajime. Even you should know that."
"Oh, I don't need to start dating."
"...What?"
"I already have someone I want to marry."
Yun wasn't ready for the pang of pain that shot through her chest. She wasn't ready for the way her throat tightened either. She swallowed thickly, wondering just what was wrong with her. Why did the thought of Hajime wanting to marry this unknown person make her feel this way? It made no sense.
Yun cleared her throat. "O-Oh. Is that so? That means you're already datin' someone, huh?"
"I'm not."
"What?"
"I'm not dating anyone, Yun."
Yun knitted her eyebrows. "Then... Ya have a crush on someone...?"
Hajime let out a laugh. "I want to marry her, Yun. Of course it's not a simple crush. I love her!"
Yun's shoulders drooped as she shot Hajime an exasperated look. Why was Hajime acting like she was saying something super obvious?! There was no way anyone could have guessed that this moron was.. Was... Was in love!
Yun pressed her lips into a thin line. "To think an idiot like you could fall in love."
"Wh- Hey!"
Yun decided to ignore Hajime's protest. "So why are ya tellin' me all this?" Yun pouted despite herself. "Go and tell this girl you love so much that you wanna marry her."
Hajime stared at Yun in silence, an unreadable expression on her face. Yun creased her eyebrows, not sure what to say. Then Hajime's expression morphed into a smug one and Yun found herself even more confused than before.
Hajime chuckled. "Oh, what's the matter, Yun? You don't look too happy."
"E-Eh? What are ya talkin' about?"
Resting her elbow on the table, Hajime held her cheek in her hand. "You look really cute when you're pouting like that, you know?"
Yun's cheeks flared in an instant. She gritted her teeth, hoping Hajime would think her face was turning red because of anger and not sheer embarrassment. She didn't think her ruse worked, though. Because Hajime currently looked like she was struggling not to laugh.
Hajime sat up straight, the smug grin still on her face. But her eyes softened a bit. "You're right. I should tell her I love her. I should tell her I want to marry her. But... Do you think she'll say yes?"
Yun blinked. "How am I supposed to know?"
"You're the only person in the world who knows."
"What? What are ya talki-"
Hajime reached into her pocket, pulled out a small velvet box and slid it across the table. "This is for you, Yun."
It took everything Yun had to not gasp. She stared at the box with wide eyes, her heart beginning to race. This... This couldn't possibly be what she thought it was. There was no way.
Yun's hands trembled as she gently picked up the box and opened it. Her breath caught in her throat as the sight of a ring greeted her. No way.
No way.
Yun's throat went dry. She was misunderstanding for sure, wasn't she? This was Hajime after all. Saying this was for her didn't necessarily mean Hajime wanted to give the ring to her. Maybe Hajime just wanted to get her opinion on the ring! Yes. That made sense.
...Right?
Yun slowly looked up to find Hajime staring at her with a ridiculously fond look on her face. Yun bit her lip, her whole face burning. "Ha-Hajime, you... What are ya...?"
Hajime's lips curved up into a grin brighter than Yun had ever seen her wear. "I love you, Yun!"
Yun squeezed her eyes shut. "Wh-Wh-What on earth d-do ya think you're sayin'?!"
"I love you and I want to marry you, Yun."
Yun opened her eyes, half expecting to find a joking expression on Hajime's face. Something that proved that this was a mere prank. But no. Hajime's unwavering gaze held nothing but pure, unadulterated sincerity. She wasn't lying. She wasn't joking. The look in her eyes told Yun that Hajime meant every single word she had said.
"You... What do ya think you're doin', Hajime? You can't do this!"
"Why not?"
"Because... Who just proposes like this all of a sudden? Shouldn't ya think about datin' first?"
"Well, I could but I think we've wasted enough time already."
"But-"
"And we spend so much time together, we go to a ton of different places together and I seriously have no idea just how many times I've been to your place for dinner. That's pretty much like dating, isn't it?"
No, it's not!
Yun didn't know why but she couldn't quite bring herself to voice that thought of hers. For some strange reason, she felt like Hajime actually had a point. Did they really need to date when they knew each other so well? Yun knew she yelled at Hajime a lot but there was no denying just how... Compatible they were.
Yun's eyes widened as she realized what exactly she was thinking. Wait, wait, wait. Was she actually thinking of marrying Hajime? No way! This was way too sudden! Saying yes was-
"So what's your answer, Yun?"
"H-Huh?"
Hajime gave Yun a nervous-looking smile. "Will you marry me? I really do love you. And I promise I'll try my best to make you happy."
"I... Well..."
Hajime stared at Yun in silence for a while before letting out a sigh. She averted her eyes but not fast enough. Yun clearly saw the hurt in them before Hajime looked away. "I know I annoy you a lot, Yun. I know you think I'm immature. So I understand if you don't want to-"
"Yes."
Hajime's head snapped in Yun's direction. "What?"
"Yes, I'll marry ya."
Hajime blinked. "Wha- You... Seriously?"
Yun crossed her arms over her chest and looked away with a pout, her cheeks warming up. "What's with that reaction? Did ya ask me thinkin' I'd say no?"
"I... Well..."
Yun turned her head to glance at Hajime. Her new fiancée. Who currently looked like she was more bewildered than she had ever been in her life.
...Annoying.
"Look, Hajime, if I don't marry ya, nobody ever will. So I had to say yes. I'm doin' ya a favor, so-"
Yun regretted every word that left her lips the moment she took a look at Hajime's face. She was certain she had never seen Hajime look as upset as she did right now. Yun bit her lip, the guilt making her feel uneasy. What on earth was she doing, spouting lies like that? She couldn't hurt her future wife like this just because she was embarrassed!
Yun buried her face in her hands. "I'm sorry. I lied. I'm just so embarrassed right now that I'm makin' up stupid excuses. I'm sorry I'm like this, Hajime."
"Eh? You're lying? So... You're not saying yes...?"
Yun dropped her hands and glared at Hajime even though she knew she shouldn't. "I didn't say that! I wouldn't lie about somethin' so important!"
Hajime blinked. "So... You were lying about the doing me a favor part."
"...Yes."
"So you actually want to marry me? For real?"
Yun twirled a strand of her hair on her finger. "I... I never really thought about it before but..."
"But?"
"...I think I love ya too."
Yun had said that last line very softly but with the way Hajime's eyebrows shot up, she knew Hajime had heard her. Yun could feel her cheeks burning but there was no backing away now. So she slid the box across the table to Hajime and held out her left hand. When Hajime gave her a quizzical look, Yun let out a sigh.
"Well, what are ya waitin' for? Put the ring on!"
Hajime's eyes widened in what Yun assumed was realization. Hajime quickly pulled the ring out of the box, took Yun's hand with surprising gentleness and carefully slid the ring onto Yun's finger. Yun savored the feeling of Hajime's hand holding hers for a few moments before pulling her hand back. Her heart swelled as she admired the ring. It was official now. She was engaged to Hajime.
A small smile crept onto Yun's face. "Thank you, my beloved idiot."
Hajime creased her eyebrows. "Beloved idi- Hey!"
Yun giggled. "I'm gonna have fun messin' with ya for the rest of our lives."
Hajime raised an eyebrow. "You honestly seem pretty happy, Yun."
"That's 'cause I am happy."
With a grin, Hajime stood up. "That's good. Really good." Hajime made her way around the table and leaned down so she was at Yun's eye level. "So..." Her expression became oddly serious. "Do I have permission to kiss you now?"
"Eh?!"
"We don't have to do it if you don't want to."
"B-But... You want to...?"
"...Yes."
Yun drew in a sharp breath, the sudden proximity making her head spin. The fact that she could feel Hajime's breath on her face wasn't helping either. And what was with this situation? Hajime wanted to kiss her now? That was way too much for her to handle! But...
Yun gulped. If she was going to marry Hajime, that meant she'd be kissing the brunette for the rest of her life. Maybe... Maybe she should get a taste of what that was going to be like. Yun's eyes fluttered shut and she gave Hajime a small nod.
"Yun?"
Yun didn't open her eyes. "You... You can kiss me."
A few seconds passed in silence. Then Yun felt Hajime's hand on her cheek and a soft gasp escaped her. Before Yun could really process what was happening, she felt Hajime's lips on her own and without even meaning to, Yun melted into the kiss.
Her first kiss. She was having her first kiss with Hajime. In a meeting room of all places. Someone could enter the room any moment now and... And Yun didn't care. She honestly couldn't care about anything else in the world other than the wild sensations she was feeling at the moment.
The feeling of Hajime's warm lips on her own made Yun feel light-headed. Those lips which were much softer than she had expected. And much more passionate than she had expected. With the way Hajime was kissing her, Yun had no doubt in her mind that Hajime had been waiting a long time to do this.
As Hajime pulled away, Yun slowly opened her eyes and looked up at her in a daze. Hajime gave her a bright grin. Then she stood up straight, turned around and started walking toward her chair. No, Yun wouldn't mind kissing this girl for the rest of her life. She'd honestly enjoy it. However...
Yun pursed her lips. Hajime was satisfied with that kiss, wasn't she? Well, she wasn't! She was too overwhelmed to actually kiss her idiot back!
Wait. Her idiot? That was new. But it wasn't wrong and... And she had more important things to worry about right now!
Yun put her hands on the table and abruptly stood up. The sound of her chair loudly scraping against the floor caused Hajime to look over her shoulder, eyebrows furrowed in evident confusion. As Yun marched over to her, Hajime turned around fully.
Hajime blinked. "What's wrong? Why do you look annoye- Mhm!"
Yun smiled against Hajime's lips. Hajime was shocked, wasn't she? She wasn't expecting this, was she? Perfect. Yun savored the smug sense of satisfaction as she deepened the kiss.
Finally, Hajime seemed to understand what was happening and Yun felt her kiss her back. As Yun wrapped her arms around Hajime's neck and pulled her closer, she couldn't help but wonder why they had never done this before. Why she hadn't realized she loved Hajime before. Because this felt so right that Yun was suddenly terrified of losing this newfound happiness.
Yun slowly pulled away and looked up at Hajime. Without really meaning to, Yun's lips curved upward into a fond smile. Yes, she was happy. She truly was. Standing here like this in Hajime's arms gave her a strange sense of comfort.
...But she didn't want to tell that to Hajime. She didn't need this idiot letting that get to her head.
Hajime tilted her head to one side. "Yun... What was that kiss for...?"
Yun smirked. "Payback."
Hajime creased her eyebrows. "What?"
"Payback for shockin' me with this sudden proposal."
Before Hajime could say anything in response, Yun pulled away from their embrace, spun on her heel and walked away. She quickly exited the room without another word and softly shut the door behind her. The smirk on her face grew wider.
Best. Payback. Ever.
These two are honestly such a cute ship. I absolutely love their dynamic. Be happy together, you two!
