Chapter 43

Aftermath of Battle

It was a few days and they were back in Trost. Sasha and Kara were in seperate rooms and Kara had not woken up yet. The mission was kind of a success with the visit to the cellar and finding the diaries of Eren's father. Eren's father was from where Reiner and Bertholdt came from. There was another world that the King of the Walls kept from the people. They had a meeting over it and Kara and Sasha had to miss it.

Jean stood looking out the window in Kara's room. He was still dressed for the meeting. He had come straight to Kara's room soon as it was over to check. She was still out cold. Jean had bags under his eyes. He had hardly slept, but Levi was worse then him. He had not slept for almost two weeks and would snap at the littlest things. Everyone was walking on egg shells with the Captain, but no one blamed him. Everyone was worried about Kara.

"Any news?" Conny asked, popping his head into the room. Jean sent him a glare. "I'll take that as a no." Conny walked into the room. "Sasha is worried about her to."

"Yeah. We all are. She'll wake up when she can. That fight, plus her getting injured wored her out. I don't think Mikasa punching her helped much." Jean said, running a hand through his hair.

"Give it time, Jean. Kara wouldn't leave you alone to deal with Eren." Conny said. Jean nodded. Conny left after staying for a bit. Jean walked over to Kara's bed and looked at her. Color was coming back to her checks, which was a good sign. Jean sat down in the chair next to her bed.

"Wake up, Kara. You got all of us worried." Jean said.

Kara could hear voices as she was in and out of sleep, but her eyes were always to heavy to open at times or she fall back to sleep right away. Kara opened her eyes to night. The room was dark. Kara turned her head. Her head was pounding pretty bad.

"Kara." Jean's voice came as she tried to sit up. She felt hands on hre, helping her sit up. Kara looked up into Jean's face and saw the worried look on his face. "You need to stop getting injured or worse. I do want to marry you eventually." Jean said with a cocky grin on his handsome face. Kara grabbed his shirt and pulled him into a hug.

"I'll try not to. I missed you. Where am I?" Kara asked, flinching from pain.

"We're back in Trost. You and Sasha were the only ones injured and we got diaries from Eren's parents basement. Apparently there's another country out there where Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie came from." Jean said. He explained what was in the diary and the meeting with the Queen.

"Interesting. I hate that I slept through it." Kara said. The door opened. Kara turned and smiled, seeing Conny.

"I thought I heard talking. Kara. Your awake. I was just going to get Sasha food. Would you like food?" Conny asked.

"Yes, please." Kara said.

"Let Captain Levi know Kara is awake as well. He wanted to know soon as she's awake." Jean said.

"Will do." Conny said. Conny disappeared.

"Your dad has been worried. He hasn't slept in a few days." Jean said. Kara sighed.

"What's the damge?" Kara asked.

"Few broken ribs. Your lucky it wasn't worse. Captain said you were hit hard by a Titan hand trying to protect him." Jean said.

"Yeah. Armin alright? How he take the news about him holding the Colossal Titan?" Kara asked, looking at Jean. Jean sighed.

"He freaked out. He's not sure if he's ready, but he accepted his fate." Jean said. Kara felt bad for Armin. He was such a sweetheart. The door flew open and Hange nearly hugged Kara to death.

"Hange. I can't breathe." Kara gasped.

"One eyes. Let her go." Levi growled. Levi gently hugged her. "Glad your awake, kid."

"You look terrible, father." Kara said.

"Shorty here hasn't slept since we left for the mission to take Wall Maria back." Hange said. Levi shot her a glare. "Now that you both are awake. There will be a new change in command. You both are being considered as Squad Leaders." Jean and Kara share looks. "You both showed leadership skills and will have your own team, but still answer to me and Levi."

"I would like that." Jean said.

"Its an honor. Thank you." Kara said. Conny brought Kara food and she quickly grabbed it.

"We got an award ceremony tomorrow. Jean will stay with you, cause your still healing but its up to you if you want to be there." Hange said.

"I'll come. I can't stay in bed." Kara said. Levi and Hange soon left. Kara finished her food. Jean took it and left, but came back to find Kara layin in bed. She couldn't keep her eyes open. She was still tired. Jean turned to leave. "No, stay. You look as bad as my dad." Jean smiled and took off his jacket and boots. Jean crawled into bed and gently wrapped his arms around her. Kara laid her head on his shoulder. Kara slowly fell asleep and Jean soon joined her.

The day of the Award. Kara and Sasha sat next to each other. Kara was in her own little world and didn't hear Floch go off on the others. She didn't care. That guy was getting on her nerve and she blocked it out. She noticed an old couple staring at her from not far off. Kara shrunk deeper into her chair. Jean stood on her other side and noticed how uncomfortable she was getting.

"You alright?" Jean whispered.

"Yeah. Just hurting a bit." Kara said.

"It's time." Levi said. Jean held out his hand and Kara took it. Jean helped her towards Historia. They all knelt on the ground. Kara was between Jean and Conny. She adjusted her body as Historia started to hand out the awards.

'This just feels bad with 10 of us surviving the mission. But we succeeded, but Reiner and the Beast Titan got away. I have a feeling things won't be over.' Kara thougth as she looked to the ground. Historia stopped in front of Eren. Kara flinched as she jolted her ribs lightly. 'Hopefully I can stand soon.'

"Eren?" Historia's voice made Kara look up. Eren was holding the Queen's hand with a look of terror on his face.

'What the hell?' Kara thought.

Afterwards. Historia cornered Kara and gave her a hug.

"I'm glad to see you awake. Was worried when they said you weren't awake. How you doing?" Historia asked.

"I'm alright. Hurting a bit yet, but Jean's been like hovering since." Kara said, nudging her head at Jean who was watching from afar.

"He's being a good boyfriend. You did good. I could tell you were uncomfortable knealing that long." Historia said. She moved to talk to Sasha and Jean was right back to her side.

"Ready to leave?" Jean asked.

"Yes please." Kara said as Jean held out his arm. Kara took it. Nile came up to them. "Nile."

"Kara. I'm glad you surived. Your mother would of been proud of you." Nile said. Kara smiled. Nile was one of few of Marcus's friends that she liked.

"Thank you." Kara said. Nile went to open his mouth when an old woman's voice came from behind.

"So this is Marcus and Lily's daughter." The old woman said. Nile didn't look thrilled. Kara saw it was the old couple that were watching her earlier. They were dressed like rich People in Wall Siena. "You look like your mother, but you got your fathers eyes." The Old woman had a distainful look on her face as she looked down on Kara. The old man seemed bored, but a little happy to see Kara.

"I'm sorry. Who are you?" Kara asked, gripping Jean's arm a little tightly. Jean didn't like this and looked for Levi.

"Well. We're your grandparents. Your fathers parents." The grandfather said.

"My birth father is dead to me and technically you disowned him when he married my mother. So you are strangers to me." Kara said. Kara saw anger flash in the grandmother's eyes. "Jean. Let's go. I don't want to be here anymore." Jean didn't look happy, but gave a nod.

"Yeah." Jean said. The grandmother looked down her nose at Jean.

"A middle class person. I didn't reconize your last name." The Grandmother said. Jean glared at her and Kara's anger was starting to get under her skin. "You could do better."

"Again your a stranger to me and I don't know you, old fraud." Kara said. Silence filled the room and Kara realized that her voice got loud. Jean was not happy as he tried to pull Kara away. The Grandmother glared at Kara.

"Whats going on?" Levi's voice came from behind them. The Grandmother turned and her eyes seem to widen seeing Captain Levi standing there. He did not look happy.

"So this is the guy that adopted Kara?" The Grandfather broke the silence. Levi lifted an eyebrow.

"This is not the place to talk about this. You can come to the Survey Corp Headquarters and we can talk there." Levi said.

"He's right." Hange said. The grandparents look at the Commander.

"Jean. Get Kara out of here and we'll deal with this tomorrow." Levi ordered. Kara went willingly with Conny and Sasha right behind them.

'Why now of all times? Do they suddenly want to have something to do with me.' Kara thought as Jean pulled her out and head to the Survey Corps.
