The Daily Lives of The Owl Familia: P2:
Vee's Name

Summary: With Vee's enrollment to Hexside at hand, she decides on something important.

Timeline: a week had passed since Vee's first "knocked-down" weekend.

With a pencil in her mouth, Vee stared at the two forms on the table. The first was her Hexside enrollment papers, and the second was her residential forms. The documents were almost filled out, say for one column. The name on both sheets was still blank.

Vee took out her pencil and sighed. She leaned back and stared up at the ceiling.

"Whatcha doin', Vee?"

Startled, Vee yelped and jumped a little. She looked around and sheepishly smiled when she saw Luz, Amity, and Lilith looking at her with concern.

"Sorry, didn't hear you come in," the Basilisk said sheepishly.

Amity and Lilith simply nodded and then went about their business. Luz, ever curious, continued to look at her sister.

"So?" the human witch asked, "What are you doing?"

Vee sighed and looked at the forms. Curious, Luz moved behind Vee and looked over her sister's shoulder. She frowned when she saw the name columns on both sheets were blank.

She looked at Vee and opened her mouth to ask something.

"...I don't know what I want to call myself," the Basilisk said softly.

Everyone in the room heard that and looked at Vee. The basilisk didn't notice the stares and continued to look at her forms. Luz grew concerned for her sister and wrapped an arm around the basilisk.

"What's wrong with Vee Noceda?" She asked curiously.

"...Nothing," Vee replied.

"Then what's got you so down?" Luz asked, her confusion growing.

Vee sighed and looked up from the forms. She smiled as she looked at Lilith and Amity. She then looked at her sister, and her smile grew slightly.

"It's been nearly a month since I moved back here," Vee explained, "The Clawthornes have been nothing but kind to me. And while Vee's an okay nickname, I want something that's completely mine. Besides, isn't combining names with those who adopted you an Owl Familia tradition?"

Luz blinked and slowly looked at Amity. They never thought about it that way, but it made sense, and they smiled.

Lilith, who has been silently watching, decided to join the conversation. "If I may make a suggestion," she said to gain the kids' attention. "How about Veessa?"

"I think I heard that name before," Amity told her mother, frowning.

"You should," Lilith replied, smiling softly at her daughter. "Veessa is similar to the name of a witch who lived 200 years ago. She was considered a pioneer in healing magic, and even now, healers still use her teachings."

"Oh, she sounds cool!" Luz said, face lighting up. "Can you tell me more, Auntie?"

Lilith giggled at Luz's energy and noticed the other kids giving her their full attention. She took a moment to collect her thoughts before she began.

"Vennassa, as I said, was a healer who spent her entire life refining healing magic. Her greatest fit was creating a spell that allows a healer to turn the protein in their bodies into energy to boost their healing magic."

Amity and Luz frown as they look at each other.

"Mom," Amity said, looking at her mother, "All witches do that. We learn that in basic health class."

"Indeed we do, my Raven," Lilith replied warmly, "But the spell Vennassa created can turn massive amounts of protein into energy. It's not without its dangers, and as such, only the most skilled and experienced healers are allowed to use the spell."

Lilith looked at the basilisk with a motherly smile.

"One of your studies is in healing. So I believe Veennassa would be honored to have such a kind-hearted girl using a name like hers."

Vee blinked two times as she thought over her aunt's words. Slowly, she turned her head and looked at the forms on the tables. She looked at the name column on her Hexside enrollment forms.

She stared at it for nearly a minute and then grabbed her pencil. She carefully wrote her new full name on the column.

Veessa Clawthorne-Noceda.

And that's how Vee got her full name. Also, remember that spell; it will play a role in a later part of this story. But now, one more chapter featuring everyone's favorite cinnamon roll then will answer a burning question.
