Chapter 28: Look Your Way

/

Dick was trapped in an adversely difficult field with Rose as his instructor, while Slade handled the Bat and company.

An obstacle course could only do so much, but up against Sladebots?

Upgraded….

Sladebots...

Dick leaped to have it in a hold, yet it flung him over as he clambered to get up.

The fighting was not on solid ground, yet in a suspended arena created out of respect for Dick's culture.

That cut like a knife as he snarled forth and saw Rose with her katana.

"Had enough?" She grinned deviously as her steps were more a clone of Grant's rather than Slade's.

"Never, I'm still not running out of breath." Dick boasted, hoping to find a sky light or some way out before Slade got back.

"How about you, princess?"

/

Slade scouted out the area with drones in the air, bots on the water in speed boats, cloaked from view and at the pier.

At the pier, he sharpened his blades beside his newest weapon while the other was being fine-tuned underground.

A shadow crept into his sight.

NOT, a Sladebot as it stood attentively by the man's ear for its mission.

"You were the danger prone idiot teenager once that dared to break into my lair; you called yourself a hero, almost cost me a weapon and a worthy protégé to my legacy."

"Yes." The cracked voice was not able to stay without the worry of another shock. The probes the price it would pay if he were to run, to find shelter in Steel at this time of night.

"You'll go. Keep them searching, backwards and forwards…and when the moment arrives, Hush?"

(We are using it. Back off!)

The boy came out with his face in a set of white bandages. The shock was a bit much, his skin had still some time left to scar. To remind him that he'd never feel humanly acceptable without a cover.

He had promised to save Dick, but what was he then? Just a freak show to flounce about and attract night critters like…

The Bat.

"You have the honor." Slade waved for his weapon and silent soldier to move, to get ready.

"Of finally putting down that rodent, right now standing in YOUR spotlight..."

/

Terra paced as hard as she could while the treadmill showed no mercy. Days, and she was getting mentally less jittery. She'd gotten to help out Tim Drake with his geography homework and even Alfred made sure she was bathed and fed while he contacted Dr. Leslie to see to her care in a therapy session online.

"You'll find me a new place to stay…" She stopped the machine and panted out a few breaths as it slowed.

"Won't you?"

"We intend to have your new if not temporary guardians aware to a degree of your…past, and the preset situation. Bruce will choose them and you might even find this to be best under the League's foremost protection. It was how Timothy was saved from Two Face, and how Jason…"

"Jason; that's Red X, right?" She asked the butler as he handed her a microfiber towel and a water bottle to chug to the last drop.

"I suppose you know a bit about him, Miss. Terra." The man nodded. "He was the second Robin and also had enemies. We found out his presence was again…. about, and for that…"

"What do you mean, by…?" She didn't know the story, so Alfred had her take a seat.

"I suppose also that you would like to hear how he became a crime fighter beside Mr. Wayne."

"I would, if it means I'll feel safe too." Terra nodded, her arms round her chest, her puffing now calmer as she caught herself to sit in the chair by the bat computer.

"Jason Todd was Robin, the second and yet…. he was completely more…. willing to disregard an order if it meant stopping a mad man from doing any crime. That included, with a gun." The man frowned.

"Or, bombs."

/

"One, two…. buckle my shoe! ~"

Joker was bloodthirsty tonight. (Using the DC animated film to save on time.)

Jason winced and cried out through the gag over his mouth. No way to see, to crawl…

Crawl….and it wasn't enough time….

He saw the countdown, sweat poured into his eyes a –

Blood….

He squeezed his green eyes shut.

"You looking for a sign from your "bat -God" kiddo?" Whimpered the idiot clown with a kill count that outmatched any other.

"Sonny - Jay, you don't need that old codger to put a dent in our fun! Aren't we having…. a blast??"

The clock, the bomb would kill them both…no.

He was WHACKED in the knees and back with that mangled crow bar. The blood and single hits were Joker's calling card. Wheezing through the cloth, Jason managed a few breaths before the man made his rounds, before he'd shouldered a bag in his hands and over his arm.

A gun, and a lovely trigger…

A trigger for destruction….

His death, was imminent.

"Tell that Dark Knight ta – ta for me if ya see him…oh! And don't stay up past your bed time, Sonny – Jay…. I might just have to beat you till you sleep like the dead….see ya, around…kid." He waved with gloved fingers as the door opened, then shut with a thud. The bomb only set –

Right, time to crawl.

Jason shuffled as an invertebrate, no arms or legs even if they were still there. Numb, broken.

But still there.

That deal with the Russian mobs was a hoax, the bosnian capital…

He'd saved none of them as a beep sounded, his last scream caught up in the blast of the century atop a factory in the snow.

Now, into rubble as hours passed….

But he was dead, right? Did Bruce bring him…

He smelled it. A casket opened as he though –

"Sedate him."

A man's voice. A sick crime.

It was all a fake! He was ok…. he was going to live, but…not by the hands of a merciful bat god.

But by a demon, straight out of the desert.

/

Hush was the person he'd locked away from before.

Red X was a way to blend in once his face was fixed up. Hush. A criminal with a hit on anyone that had left him to die.

How Joker would call it irony.

So, he'd try to forget. Have a conscience as…

HE was recovered.

Memories twisted a second time; he became X to get his way back to square one…

Instead, he found a love of shiny objects to be a true pleasure.

X was given life once Richard dubbed it a cursed suit, to put that on. To want your death early?

They'd just dig him up, again.

Dirt on the casket.

A dip in a sea moss green, glowing pool.

And back in the ground, only to rise.

He slashed as Hush.

Again.

He swept higher than X could.

And once more.

Until…

He'd forgotten what he was truly fighting for.

Revenge, against the ones to have let him die, and the ones to kill him off.

He was loyal to Slade as X, yet as Hush?

Jason sneered and recalled the tech and abilities of such an ally.

He wanted to regain his cut, since it was his share of the money load.

And Death? They were tight, so Hush had stayed to get ready to not only kill a jester in the dark.

Yes, he was here…

To cull a flying rodent for the nearly very, last time.

If he died tonight, probes preventing him from fighting his fate?

He wasn't coming back up from that pit.

Not ever, again.

/

Jason was close as Batman dropped in over the water via the Wing. He'd relocate it once Cy had his signal.

As if that were a trouble, Steel's smoke stacks were twice as big as Blud's. More concrete than Gotham's crumbling infrastructure by far.

A perfect place to act like a wall and camouflage one's self, Batman agreed as he linked to his comm in his cowl.

"We've landed. What's the situation so far. Status report."

~We got ahold a Aqualad, but it ain't right. You should come by the docks. Get a good look. He's acting –

Hearing lasers and screams, Batman thought only the worst as he zipped off via bat wing's interior add of a cycle stored in the collapsed holding chamber below. A quick tip was to make it cheaper next time incase someone blew it up.

Oh, but he was a billionaire so that, not as possible as one could sound of it in their own head versus on paper.

/

He got in, the frightening thought that Kori going along would cripple her voluntarily had him glad she'd stayed behind with Terra and Raven. The docks were dead; no Cyborg, which made him wonder again if he was wrong.

Wait…no, that wasn't –

"Gas…" He coughed, finding the pouch apparatus for such an ordeal.

"Who….is there? Show –

" Ung!" A kick to the skull with the butt end of a gun, he was out cold.

/

See them run on next chapter, Deep Sea Divers! Chapter 29 is it already? Got to get Renegade into the Bludhaven years while we have a shot. Well, recall. Dick beat Grant as far as now, so fighting Rose in this round will make it so he can't ever back out – but if he loses?

He loses his team. Batman is on edge without his partner and Tim up and quit? Wow. Also, Bruce isn't fully almost aware of X being Jay. If he is, then now would be a good time to reiterate on the rest…

So, can Dick make Slade the happiest he'll ever be, and don't forget what they did to Red X – he is now on team Deathstroke for getting caught in the probes gallery. Next chapter, will be messier! Read on and stay curious for the rest!
