Chapter 25

Previously:

The next morning, Carrie woke up suddenly with the feeling of being watched. Through her eyelids, she noticed the absence of light in her quarters, which was normal as it was early in the morning. But there was also a silhouette at the foot of her bed sitting on one of the armchairs.

"Good morning, Agent White,"

Carrie recognized immediately the melodic voice. It was of the person she had been waiting on for the past 3 months.

"We have much to discuss."

And now

Carrie woke up almost immediately. Her guest was in Starfleet security attire – red but not the standard one but rather the ceremonial version. She wondered why. Perhaps he had been on an official visit somewhere and had not had the time to change.

She studied his face. It was perfectly calm but his eyes gave playful flames. And there was a tiny smile dancing on his lips. Once again, on the heap, she tried to read his mind but once again was gently repelled. The smile grew a bit. Apparently, he found her attempt amusing.

"Good morning, Lieutenant. You are late."

The smile grew bigger. He was definitely amused.

"Get dressed."

He sprang out of the chair with surprising speed and before Carrie could react, he had reached the door, and left. Carrie got the gist but took her time to dress properly. She was not used to being hurried up. Of course, she did not get that impression from him as it sounded more like an invitation than an order.

She stepped outside. He was waiting patiently.

"I am ready."

He gestured her to walk beside him.

They walked in silence. While other Starfleet officers passed by them, he would acknowledge them with a nod. Also, it appeared that he was studying them. Carrie wondered if that was an occupation hazard or he was merely curious.

They stopped on the railings above the Promenade.

"What do you see?" He asked.

Carrie pondered for a moment what the intention of his question was and then answered. "The Promenade,"

"And on it?"

"People." Carrie replied automatically as it was somewhat obvious but she thought he wanted something more. "People enjoying themselves and others going by their duties,"

"Hmm," He mumbled. "What do you think your current agency would see?"

"Looming threats and shadows in every corner,"

His gaze turned away from the crowd below and focused on her for a moment then returned back to the Promenade.

"It seems you have been paying too much attention to Sloan's manifesto."

Carrie moved backwards involuntarily. She had indeed done that the day before when she was reviewing the latest from the agency. She found it disturbing. Sloan was paranoid at best. But it seems that she had remembered his words literarily.

"What do you see?" She asked hoping to change the direction of the conversation as she had no desire to discuss Sloan and his vision of things.

"Potential and hope,"

His answer surprised her. He was definitely not like the other agents. He sounded more like the officers around Commander Sisko, on the exception of Major Kira who like Sloan seems to think they are shadows everywhere.

"Book a holosuite with Quark."

"What program?"

"USS Enterprise NX-01, Romulan minefield." He replied. "Be there in an hour." And he left her.

"Um, ok," Carrie did no know about the requested program so she consulted the historical documents. She knew that was the first Enterprise. She did not know though it had met with Romulans. But as the records showed, the ship had entered a minefield in November 2151 and barely saved an officer from exploding one while trying to disarm a mine that had attached itself to the hull of the ship.

In the meantime, Lieutenant Deville headed to Ops to meet with Commander Sisko. He was not a fan of him. It had nothing to do with the fact that he was selected by the Bajorans or the short list of candidates. No, his reasons were different.

Ops was its usual busy self. People everywhere performing their duties with due diligence. It was the busiest place on the station. For outsiders, it would appear that these people did absolutely nothing but press on screens and occasionally push a button. But Ops directed all the traffic not only for the station but the entire sector and took care of its defense.

One of the consoles, Lt. Deville noticed a familiar face.

"Robert," Lt. Jadzia Dax exclaimed visibly surprised. "There was no mention of your visit in any reports."

"Oh," He replied with a touch of superiority she has come to hate in him. "My apologies, your majesty, I was not aware that Starfleet Security needed to report to you the whereabouts of its personnel." He took a small bow just to annoy her further.

"Why are you here?"

"And just as inquisitive as your previous host," he said ignoring her question. "But I am reporting my purpose to your commanding officer, if you would care to introduce us."

"Over my dead body." The reason Jadzia was so defensive surprising even Major Kira was because she knew of his opinion for Benjamin, and it was slightly short of hostile.

"That can always be arranged." He replied ever so calmly but with playful flames.

Major Kira sensed that he meant it as a joke. She had never seen Jadzia this passionate and defensive. She knew there was a story there and she could not wait to get Jadzia alone to hear it. Still Jadzia stood to guard the door leading to Sisko's office. Kira was now even more intrigued.

Fortunately, Commander Sisko exited his office with the obvious intent to give an order or request some information but froze at the sight.

"Old man?" Benjamin directed his eyes questioningly at her. Then he looked at the man before her. He was dressed in the ceremonial attire. His rank insignia indicated Lieutenant in Starfleet Security. 'Funny', he thought as he had no scheduled meeting with them.

Jadzia now had no choice but to introduce him. "Commander Benjamin Sisko, this is Lieutenant Robert Deville."

"Starfleet Security, judging by the uniform," Benjamin added. He extended a hand that Robert shook curtly. "Please, come in." He then turned to Kira. "Major, I am still waiting for the report of the duty rosters."

"It will be done by the end of the day!" Kira replied.

"It should have been done already."

"We had a little excitement with all the stories coming to life…"

"Alright, by the end of day, it is."

Commander Benjamin Sisko entered his office and the doors closed. He noticed the studying look of the lieutenant before him and the apprehensive one on Jadzia's face. He wondered how they know each other. There were definitely sparks between them. He had to hear that story.

"Lieutenant Deville," Benjamin gestured him to sit down. "What brings you to my station as I do not recall any reports mentioning your visit." Jadzia smiled victoursely.

Robert Deville was not a fan of the way Starfleet did certain things chief among which was to know the whereabouts of everyone at any given time. Although that protocol had its advantages, he has always found it distasteful. Freedom – my ass!

"An oversight, I imagine." Robert replied.

"Yes, of course,"

"But it doesn't answer his question," Jadzia added. "Undoubtedly one of your…"

"Ease on the throttle, Lieutenant, I can speak for myself." Robert cut her off.

Benjamin did sense the tension in the room.

"Well, please do not dawdle then," Jadzia replied bitingly. "It would be nice if it happened before I die of old age."

"Ah, youth, always hurrying, with their eyes stuck in the sky, never paying attention to where they go or minding their surroundings." Robert returned the favor with an icy tone.

Truth be told, Benjamin would have enjoyed to see where they would take their banter but he was a busy man. "Please, can we focus for a moment?"

"Of course, Benjamin," Jadzia said.

Completely ignoring her, Robert turned his attention back to Sisko. "I was attending the ceremony for the launch of a new wing on Starbase 375 when I was abruptly reassigned to conduct an unofficial review of Deep Space Nine's security."

"Unofficial? By Whom?" Benjamin asked as this was highly unusual.

"By the CNC, Fleet Admiral Taela Shanthi," Robert replied. "Feel free to contact her, Commander."

Benjamin pressed on his badge. "Ops, contact Earth, Starfleet Headquarters, the office of the CNC."

"Right away,"

The screen activated and the emblem of Starfleet was soon replaced by a communication's officer. Benjamin made his request and this time the screen was filled with the CNC.

"Commander Sisko,"

"Admiral Shanthi,"

"What is this about?"

Before Benjamin could answer, Robert moved into view raising a hand, "Me,"

"Lieutenant Deville,"

"Admiral,"

Benjamin turned to him and Jadzia, "May I have the room?"

Both left and waited patiently outside. But it was not long before Robert spoke.

"You know I would have never told Curzon this but I have always found you oddly attractive not to mention hot when you get this passionate and worked up."

Jadzia looked at him like she wanted to kill him but her cheeks flushed in red. Fortunately, she did not get the time to mount a proper response as Benjamin invited them back in.

"Right, Lieutenant, the CNC explained the situation to me and the reason for your silent arrival." Benjamin said. "Still, I am not very comfortable with it."

"I am sure you are not, Commander, but the admiral was rather adamant."

"Yes, I got that feeling from her." Benjamin said. "Anything you need will be provided."

"When I need something, Commander, I will let you know." Robert said curtly. "You will barely notice my presence." He looked at Sisko and added. "I am not here to create waves."

"Well, that would be the first." Jadzia couldn't help but exclaim.

"Always a pleasure, a Trilling one, to work with you and the slug, Lieutenant."

Benjamin was not usually having trouble intervening in a conflict between two officers but he was uncertain how to proceed on this one. There was a story behind the relationship of these two and he should learn it before acting more decisively. For now, he thought his authority should be sufficient.

"That would be all for now. You have your orders, Lieutenant Deville, attend to them."

"Right away, Commander Sisko." Robert replied. He turned around sending a glancing look of acknowledgement towards Dax and left the office.

When he finally got down the elevator, Benjamin turned to Jadzia. "What's wrong with you, Old Man? The level of …I can't even find words for it."

"I am sorry, Benjamin."

"I've got to hear that story."

"It is a long story."

"I really got to…"

"It is a very long story and for another time. All you need to know now is that you can't trust him."

"He's a Starfleet security officer, Jadzia."

"No, what he is, is a giant pain in the ass. And you need to watch him. He always creates waves. And I have no doubt he would create one here."

"Why are you so certain of this?"

"Well, to start things off," Jadzia replied passionately. "He doesn't like you much. Actually, the last time, I heard him speak about you was rather hostile. You need to watch your back, Benjamin. He has no love for you."

"I am sure things are not as bad as you put them, Old Man. There must be a reason for such opinion."

"And I am sure he will find one. Watch your back, Benjamin, Robert Deville is bad news, very bad."

"Jadzia, aren't you overreacting a bit?"

"Oh, no, I am not. Trust me. He is a very dangerous man."

Benjamin had to admit he had rarely seen Curzon or Jadzia this worked up. Something about this man brought a side to Dax he had not witnessed before. The flames in her eyes were genuine.

He needed to learn more about this lieutenant Deville before formulating an opinion. He had just met him and so far, he was very impressed with him but also surprised of how he managed to balance in perfect calamity his tone when speaking with him and Jadzia. The two ways of speaking were directly opposite one of another – courteous, polite to a commanding officer and right out icy and sarcastic towards Jadzia. Weirdly enough he had sensed the veiled threat in some of his words towards Dax. It was an interesting mix.

He also needed to hear the story of how these two knew each other. 'A long story, huh?' He wondered what has transpired between them. 'I do not want to create waves' or something similar, and Jadzia's reaction that said the exact opposite. She was so certain he would.

He thought about his conversation with the CNC. Apparently, the admiral placed a great deal of trust in the lieutenant's hands. That spoke volumes of his abilities. Still, Jadzia's concern was not to be ignored. He needed more information.

And don't forget to review. It only takes a couple of minutes. Thank you!
