Krispy Kreme McDonald eventually made it home after a while, but not before stopping by Jollibee on Leicester Square to pick up some chicken sandwiches for himself and Lucy Woo. When he finally made it home, the sky had already grown pitch black, with the occasional sprinkling of stars through the endless stretch of darkness.
He knocked on the door and then waited a few seconds before Lucy Woo opened up. She was standing there, wearing seafoam green silk pyjamas underneath a navy blue dressing gown and matching seafoam green slippers while her hair was gathered into a pink claw clip for a relaxed updo.
"Where have you been?" Lucy asked, worry permeating her voice. "You don't usually come home this late."
"I know, I know," Krispy Kreme McDonald replied. "But I got held up at the London Underground while waiting for the train."
Lucy raised an eyebrow at him. "Did you now? Besides, you don't usually take the London Underground, so what gives?"
"Well, when I was having lunch in the canteen, I overheard Ray, Kowalski, and Kent talking about how some strange person was making people play children's games at the London Underground. Naturally, I decided to check it out."
"Did you at least find out why this masked person was going through all that trouble of doing that?"
"Not yet, but I will soon enough. See, after I deliberately lost a game of conkers to them, they handed me a business card with a phone number they wanted me to call. I don't recognize it or the company name that was also printed on the card, but I'm going to call that number anyway and see what happens."
Lucy knew that everything that Krispy Kreme McDonald had relayed to her sounded like a red flag, but she decided to keep that to herself for the time being. "Well, I sure hope you know what you're doing. After all, for all we really know, this person might've been using those children's games as bait for kidnapping or murdering potential victims."
"That's exactly what I'm afraid of." Krispy Kreme McDonald then produced a bag filled with Jollibee food as if out of hammerspace. "I did bring home some food at least."
Lucy smiled. "Thank you, Krispy Kreme McDonald. I appreciate it."
Right before heading off to bed, Krispy Kreme McDonald called the phone number on the business card and was told where to meet up after work. He was curious enough to meet up with the mysterious figure again, yet at the same time he was filled with a sense of dread that tomorrow might be his last day alive. Either way, he had to steel himself for this encounter and hope for the best. The next day, he headed off to work and once there, went through all the usual processes to get into the main pod. He then made his way into the briefing room and leaned against his trusty mantlepiece. By the time he got there, Victor, Anita, and Professor Professor had already sat down in their designated seats.
"I've just gotten word that the boggart suicide bombings have been increasing in this area and that they're becoming more devastating by the minute," Krispy Kreme McDonald reported. "If we can't stop these fae terrorists in time, it could lead to a breach in security of epic proportions, and you all know how seriously I take security. In fact, I take security so seriously that my name is Changed Daily. Today, you may call me..." His cellphone beeped. "Oh... Cha Cha Slide."
Everyone else just laughed.
Victor then piped up, "Hey, Cha Cha Slide?"
"Yes, Victor?" Cha Cha Slide asked.
"Ray told me yesterday that you went to the London Underground to investigate some masked person making people play children's games or whatever? Is that true?"
"Yes, Victor, it's true. I had to find out who this person was and why they were doing this. I didn't find out much, but I did find out that they were planning something bigger. I even called the phone number on the business card this masked figure gave me. I don't know what they're planning, but I will soon enough. In fact, I'm supposed to meet up with them tonight."
Now it was Anita's turn to speak up. "Really? Are you sure you want to do that?"
"Of course I'm sure, Anita," Cha Cha Slide replied. "If I'm going to stop whatever is going on with this masked person, I have to meet up with them."
"Alright. Just be careful, Cha Cha Slide. I don't want you to get caught up in some human trafficking ring or something."
"Don't worry, Anita. I know what I'm doing. I'm not going to do anything stupid."
Anita sighed and nodded. She knew there was no use in trying to talk Cha Cha Slide out of it. She just had to trust that he knew what he was doing.
Later that night, Cha Cha Slide prepared himself for when the masked figure would arrive to pick him up and take him to... wherever it was they were going. Actually, now that he thought about it, neither the masked figure nor the woman on the phone had told him where their ultimate destination was. Cha Cha Slide was filled with a sense of dread as he wondered what he was getting himself into. He had gone too far now, and he knew it. He was in too deep, and there was no turning back. No... he couldn't think like this. He had to find out before it was too late. He had to be brave and take the risk. He only had one shot at this, and he had to make it count. He had to know the truth.
He didn't have time to worry much more anyway since he soon heard the masked figure call out to him from outside. Without so much as even a word, he gathered whatever he deemed necessary for the meet-up and headed out the front door, but not before leaving behind a note for Lucy Woo to read that would explain his absence. Weirdly enough, the masked figure arrived on what looked to be a modified spider-bike that they were driving.
"So..." Cha Cha Slide began to speak. "That's quite the ride you got there."
"Thank you," the masked figure simply replied. "I figured this was the best way to quickly get to our destination without having to go through an airport. Plus, it's much cheaper and the freedom of the open sky is unbeatable. Let's just hope that our journey is smooth sailing from here on out, eh?"
Cha Cha Slide could've sworn that he heard the masked figure winking behind that mask. Cha Cha Slide tried to keep his composure, but the masked figure's comment made his heart race slightly. He wasn't sure why he felt so uneasy, but he knew he had to stay alert just in case. He nodded and smiled, hoping that the masked figure couldn't tell he was scared.
The masked figure chuckled. "Sorry. I didn't sound too ominous there, did I? That wasn't my intention."
Cha Cha Slide smiled and shook his head. "No, you didn't. I'm just a bit jumpy, that's all." He breathed a small sigh of relief, thankful that the masked figure hadn't noticed his fear. "You wouldn't have any drinks on you, would you?"
"Funny you should ask." The masked figure produced a flask with a mystery liquid inside. "Alright, now just drink up and we should be all set."
Cha Cha Slide nervously took the flask, and with trembling hands, he drank the liquid. Immediately, he felt a wave of calmness wash over him. His fear subsided as he looked up, meeting the masked figure's gaze.
"Thank you..." Cha Cha Slide's speech began to slur as he spoke. "This was... just what I needed..."
His vision began to blur and he felt his body going limp. Cha Cha Slide then pitched forward and fell face-first onto the ground.
"That was easier than I thought..." the masked figure murmured to themself. "Alright now, time to go."
