Chapter Two
"Have either of you heard of a captain Rendon?" Erin asked the pair.
"He was my best friend's old boss. Why?" Andy asked, confused.
"I just got a text message from him saying that he caught one of your attackers." Erin looks up from her phone to Andy. Erin sees Andy's shocked expression and feels the same way. She feels her phone vibrate "I'm sorry, I need to take this and get back to the station to enter your statement. Please feel free to call if you need anything." Andy and Meredith both nod as they watch Erin rush out of the hospital room.
Andy looks at Meredith and just sighs, happy she got through that.
"Andy, I'm going to give you some more pain meds. I can see that you're still in pain." Meredith told her, going over to where her IV hung. "I need to go check on some less interesting patients but I should be back soon, okay?" Meredith saw Andy nod and then walked out of the room after giving her hand one last squeeze.
When Meredith was gone from the room Andy slumped down in the bed and sighed, her mind flashing to what had happened. "You killed a man. There's no excuse for that." The words one of the men had said to her rang in her ears. She was a lot of things, but she wasn't a killer, was she?
A couple of hours later Andy got tired of laying down so she tried to sit up but groaned in pain.
"You shouldn't be moving too much, Andy." Andy heard Vic say as she came into the room.
Andy glared at Vic. "well not much else I can do right now, Vic." Andy spat out.
"I get you're angry right now Andy, but you don't need to go snapping at people that care about you." Vic snapped back.
"Alright, that's enough." both women looked to the door where the voice came from. "Vic, do you mind if I talk to Andy alone?"
Vic nods at Diane and leaves the room.
Diane looks at Andy and tries to gauge how Andy was feeling and thought back to her experience. "Andy, listen, I know that this is hard."
"Do you?" Andy asked, tears in her eyes, not wanting to talk about this.
"I do, Andy." Diane moved to sit on the chair next to the bed and rested a hand on Andy's arm. She took a second to look over at Andy. She saw the brace on the arm she wasn't holding and the bruises on her face. She didn't want to stare at her too long so she looked away. "Happened when I was working in my parent's bar."
"Is that why you came?" Andy asked her. "To try to relate to what happened to me? Because I hate to break it to you-" Andy got cut off.
"No. I came because my job as a therapist for firefighters is to make sure that they're okay and if they're not, I talk to them. I am here for them." Diane told Andy.
Andy looked down. "I fought." Andy looked at Diane. "I tried to fight them off, I tried to run. I tried everything Diane." Andy felt tears welling up in her eyes. "I just- I couldn't- I- I tried Diane!" Andy continued to rant.
"Shhh shhhh. Andy." Diane wrapped Andy in her arms, trying to comfort her the best she could but she knew from her own experience that there is never a timeline on how to work through this. "I know how hard this is. I know that the aftermath is extremely hard but I promise you that I will be here through every step of the way." Diane pulls back from the hug. "Andy, this is in no way your fault. They chose to hurt you. They chose to attack you. You were just coming to the station." Diane looked at Andy, wondering why she was coming to the station so late when she wasn't scheduled to work. "Can I ask you something?" Andy nodded. "I'm just wondering why you were coming to the station so late?"
"I was coming from a meeting with Chief Ross."
"Can I ask what it was about?" Diane tried to tread carefully.
"It was about me becoming the next captain of 19," Andy told her, a ghost of a smile on her face.
Diane felt a swell of pride for the younger woman, happy that she was finally getting her chance. "That's awesome Andy, congrats," Diane told her, smiling.
"Thank you, Diane," Andy replied. There was a moment of silence before either spoke. "So what happens next, Diane?" Andy asked, playing with loose threads on the hospital blanket.
"Well, you've given your statement to the police, and you've gotten checked out. The next thing is that you heal while police do their thing and catch the men who did this to you."
"According to the detective I talked to she told me that Captain Rendon and the SPD have already arrested one of the men," Andy told her, tears forming in her eyes again.
Diane nods. "That's good. That means it shouldn't take long for the other two men to be arrested."
"I guess," Andy mumbled. "I just want this to be over," Andy told her, louder. "But it won't be for a while. There's going to be a trial. I'm going to have to sit through that Diane." Andy let a couple of tears fall. "I just want to start the healing process. I want to be able to move on. I want to be able to go back to work." Andy sees Diane about to protest. "I get it. I need to be medically cleared to start off. Then I gotta talk to someone, which I hope will be you?" Andy asked, looking at Diane.
"It can be, yes." Diane agrees.
"And I know I need to talk to Ross as well before I'm able to go back to let her know what happened."
"Yes, you do," Diane nodded. "She needs to know all the details. Needs to know what happened to you and what safety measures the station may need to take now that some people have come after one of her best firefighters." Andy smiles.
"Flattery, huh?" Andy chuckles. "Haven't you heard it'll get you nowhere?"
"Oh, I have. But I was just stating a fact." Diane smiled. "Seriously though, since we know these men have come after you we need to make sure there's no one else in Jeremy's circle that will hurt you," Diane told her, watching as Andy's face fell.
"You really think there might be more people who come after me?" Andy asks in a small voice and Diane's heart cracks for her. Hating to see her go through this, knowing she'll never be the same.
"I don't know Andy. You'll have to talk to the detective or another cop about that." Diane told Andy, wishing she knew more.
Andy looks down at her lap again when she hears another voice come into the room.
"I actually have some news, Captain Herrera."
"Erin? What are you doing here?" Andy asked, confused.
"Not to sound creepy but I was waiting for the right moment to come in," Erin told them, closing the door.
"So what's going on?" Andy asked.
"I came to give you an update on what's going on," Erin told her. "I have some good news, but I also learnt some bad news."
"Just tell me. Please." Andy begged.
"We caught the other two men," Erin told her and saw could see Andy exhale. "They're being processed as we speak. But we interviewed them." Erin paused. "Andy, they told us that there were more of Jeremy's friends out there who want payback." Erin watched Andy's face drop and tears well up in her eyes. "I'm so sorry Andy. We're in contact with Oregon PD and any of the men who have plans to come up here will be arrested as an accessory." Erin concluded. She hated to give this news.
Diane and Erin watched as Andy took in the news. They watched her face go blank. "So you caught the men who did this to me?"
"Yes."
"Will there be a trial?" Andy asked. Erin could tell that this was a question that Andy's had for a while.
"We have to talk to the DA about that, but I don't see a reason we would need to. We have their confessions, we have the video. I'd like to hope it's enough not to have a trial." Erin told her. "I can't guarantee anything right now, however, Andy." She watched Andy nod. "It's getting late so I'll let you rest."
Andy watched Erin leave the room and sighed.
"Andy, it's going to be okay." Diane tried to reassure her.
"Is it?" Andy asked, looking Diane in the eyes.
Poor Andy :(
