Mary Jane's Last Dance—Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

Please Forgive Me—Bryan Adams

The Trans Am rumbles to a stop along the curb, and I haul ass across the yard to slip inside. Edward shifts it into drive, and I peck his cheek before turning up the dial on his stereo. Tom Petty is crooning about his last dance with Mary Jane, and I rock my shoulders in solidarity.

I get it, Tom.

Truly, I do.

Those days are winding down.

"Speaking of," Edward says, lowering the volume. "Wanna smoke before we head to the beach?"

I nab the doobie that's tucked behind his ear and take a whiff. Damn, that smells good. "You cool waiting?"

He shrugs, turning toward First Beach. "Suits me."

The parking lot is filled with all the familiar cars, and Edward whips the Trans Am in right next to Alice's Mustang. The sun has already dipped below the horizon, but it's still light enough that we don't need to depend on artificial lighting to make our way to the beach.

I find my BFF playing volleyball against Jane, and I jump in on her side while Edward heads over to where Emmett and Jake are stacking wood for the fire.

"What's up," Ali says, moving to the back so I can take the net position. "You smell skunky."

"Damn." I pluck the joint from behind my ear and yell for Edward. He turns to me just as he's wiping his forehead with the tail of his tank. "Double damn."

"Holy hell," Jane says, mouth gaping slightly. "Where'd those abs of steel come from?"

I bark a laugh, waving him over. "I guess he has a lot more time to work out in Hanover than we thought."

He jogs across the beach, rays from the floodlight shining on him like a God, and it's hard to look away. All three of us huddle near the net, watching perfection enter our orbit.

His eyes lock with mine, and he smiles. "Want me to hold onto it until we smoke?"

"Yeah." I can't help but return his smile as my insides do weird, squiggly things. "Thanks."

He almost smirks as our fingers touch, and when he heads back across the sand, we keep our eyes locked on his tight ass. "And you broke up with him why?" Jane asks.

Alice rolls her eyes, turning back to the game. "Don't ask," she snarks. "It's an angsty, complicated tale that only leads us right back here. Let's just make sure she never does that stupid shit again."

"Lesson learned," I say, spiking the ball after Alice sends it my way. "That boy is so mine."

We play until we're a group of sweaty, panting girls before wading into the water to rinse off the stink. The firelight dries us, music keeps us moving, and beer is the drink of choice.

All of that is background, though.

Because in the forefront is strong, lean arms that hold me close and soft lips that graze my tangy skin. My buzzed boy never strays far, and he's always smiling, always ready to have a good time.

Because this is it.

Time is winding down.

This is the back-to-school bash for the local kids, and most likely the last big get-together for the summer college visitors. Edward only has one more week left at the hospital and his return to Hanover is bearing down on us.

When the lyrics of Please Forgive Me float on the breeze, I take my guy's hand and pull him into the sand. His fingers settle on my hips, and I look up into his glassy gaze as we sway together. I sing along with Bryan, the poster boy for summer love songs.

I remember the smell of your skin

I remember everything

I remember all your moves

I remember you yeah

I remember the nights, you know I still do

Edward slides his palm into my hair and tugs me close, his lips coming down to press against mine softly at first before a full-blown tongue fucking takes place. When all is said and done, the song has shifted to a peppy rap song I can't quite place, and I'm ready to go.

The uncomfortable back seat of the Trans Am is calling our names.

Wahhhhh, all this lovey dovey is killing me on the reread lolol.

I just wanna take a minute to shout out to those of you who make it a point to check my updates so you can read with all the issues FF is having.

It truly means the world *squishy hugs*

See ya one more time this week :)
