The polished floorboards creaked under each step, the sound echoing through the cramped space of the wooden gym. Tall windows, dusty and stained with age, allowed small beams of sunlight to pierce the darkness, casting pale rays upon the worn volleyball net. The scoreboard loomed over the center of the court, a dark monolith, its numbers glowing brightly in the gloom.
A flurry of activity dominated the six courts, with volleyball girls on each side. Warm-up stretches, practice drills, and finding partners were the name of the game before the first match. Sweat-drenched bodies moved with the grace and fluidity of a well-oiled machine, each player effortlessly transitioning from one position to the next.
A smattering of uninterested spectators dotted the bleachers, the sounds of their whispered conversations nearly drowned out by the shouts and cheers of students who came to support their team.
The girls from Kitagawa Daiichi Middle School had arrived, bags slung over their shoulders, their blue sweatshirts and jogging pants matching. But the court was crowded, leaving them to stand at the edge of the game, their eyes fixed on it.
The one with medium black hair and grey eyes was the exception, her nerves turning to excitement as the final match approached. The anticipation was evident in her eager smile, the determination on her face as she gazed towards the court with nervous smiles from her teammates, a silent promise that they would give it their all.
Rinoa Mitsuki was the hub of the girls' volleyball team, her strong-willed, energetic, and cheerful personality drawing people to her. As the last middle school game and tournament approached, even the senior teammates felt the pull of her positive outlook.
Her cheerfulness was like a beacon, leading the team through the warm-up drills, encouraging everyone to give their best effort. Despite the pressure of finishing their middle school days, she radiated a sense of excitement, her determination to make the most of this final game evident in her every move.
Rinoa's gaze roamed around the players, examining their movements with a critical eye. "Whoa, they sure do look tough," she murmured, studying the girls warming up around her. "It seems like we're in for some stiff competition. We've been training for two years to get our first title, so I know our team can handle whatever these opponents throw at us."
Ayumi Kihara turned to face her, her yellow eyes reflecting her own nervousness. "You're right, Rinoa," she replied, her voice trembling. "This could be our last chance to win a title. I don't want to think about what would happen if we lost this game. I just hope our training has prepared us well enough."
Rinoa gave her teammate a confident smile, determination evident in every muscle of her body. "Don't worry, Ayumi," she said, her voice filled with conviction. "As long as we stay focused and work together, we can beat anyone who comes our way. Let's go out there and show them what Kitagawa Daiichi is made of!"
The girl with the white and blond hair interjected, her eyes filled with a sense of urgency. "Let's not forget that Ayumi-chan is right about this," she said, her tone serious. "We're all third years and we won't be able to play together after this. We can't afford to take this lightly."
Rinoa nodded, her expression equally as determined. "You're right," she said. "But we've trained so hard and accumulated enough experience to stay on the court longer than anyone." She raised her hands up in the air and waved them around dramatically. "Let's make this win count and make our time together count!"
Rinoa looked around at the other girls, who were still in the midst of their warm-up drill. She took a deep breath and narrowed her eyes in concentration, determined to make the most of these last few minutes before the game began.
"We still have plenty of time to test our skills one last time," she said, her voice filled with determination.
A girl beside her, with violet eyes, black hair past her shoulders, a French braid on her back of her hair, and nervous lips that closed together, speaks up. "Rinoa-san is right," Azami said. "We still have plenty of minutes before we can start warming up. let's use this time to focus and get into the right headspace for the game. We want to make sure we're bringing our A-game when the match starts."
Rinoa excused herself and headed for the bathroom, her mind racing with thoughts about the upcoming game. She quickly headed for the nearest sink and turned the tap on, splashing water over her face to freshen up. With each splash of water, she tried to clear her mind of nerves and focus on the task at hand. She took a deep breath and looked herself in the mirror, trying to find some calmness within the chaos of the moment.
As Rinoa attempted to exit, she was suddenly drawn by the sound of girls gossiping outside. She stepped closer to the door and strained her ears to try to make out what they were saying.
"Did you hear that?" one of the girls asked, her voice tinged with excitement.
"Yeah, I know," her friend responded. "It's about Niiyama. I heard that they're going to sweep the floor tonight."
"What do you mean?" another asked, her voice filled with doubt.
"Those girls are one of the best middle school volleyball teams in the prefecture," the first girl replied confidently. "I heard they're not messing around. They're going to put up a good fight."
Rinoa felt a pang of nerves in her gut but didn't let it deter her. She took a deep breath to steady herself and continued towards the bathroom, determined to focus on the game and not let the rumors distract her.
Rinoa could hear the girls' voices outside the bathroom door, and she was drawn to them by their gossip. She stood there for a moment, listening in to catch any information that might help her in the upcoming match.
One of the girls scoffed. "Oh, come on now. Kitagawa Daiichi may be a strong team, but they've got nothing on Niiyama. Niiyama is the top team in junior high, and they're the ones who'll be sweeping the floor tonight."
Rinoa clenched her fists, feeling a sense of determination wash over her. She knew that Niiyama was a strong team, but she also knew that Kitagawa Daiichi's lineup was strong, too. She wasn't going to let the gossip get to her; she was going to give it her all on the court.
As she walked back out of the bathroom, she heard the girl's voice continue, "Well, I think it's gonna be one-sided. I don't see how Kitagawa Daiichi can beat them."
As Rinoa walked out of the bathroom, she was startled to bump into a tall girl dressed in niiyama girls uniform. The girl's expression was serious and her eyes were blue. Rinoa couldn't help but stare up at her, feeling a mix of surprise and awe.
"I'm sorry I bumped into... You..." Rinoa said, starting off with an apology before trailing off. She looked up at the girl's height and felt her heart racing. "Um... You're..."
"It's Niri Kurosawa to you," the girl replied, her voice low and even. "Do you need something?"
Rinoa quickly regained her composure and shook her head. "It's nothing. I was just washing myself up." She nervously stood up, looking away from Niri's intense gaze. She couldn't help but feel a sense of uneasiness around her - Niri's seriousness was palpable.
As Rinoa tried to brush off the incident, Niri broke the silence. "You're from Kitagawa Daiichi, right? From what I can tell, you and your team have an experience," she said, her voice serious.
Rinoa felt a surge of nerves but tried to keep her composure. "Same to you," she replied, trying to sound confident.
All the girls on the court seemed to be listening to their team captains discussing their opponents, but in reality they were just gossiping about themselves. Rinoa had wanted to remain focused on the game, but she felt drawn to the girls' chatter. She looked towards her fellow teammates and felt a sudden urge to talk to them. "Hey, I know it seems awkward, but they seem to be talking about us," she said, gesturing towards the girls.
As Rinoa stood next to Niri, she couldn't help but feel a sense of uneasiness wash over her. Niri's gaze was intense, and her words felt like a challenge. Rinoa tried to stay focused but couldn't help but feel that Niri was getting under her skin.
"I'm aware of your team's top performers in your last junior tournament. Does the rumors are true that you performing the same way as us I can tell?" Niri said, looking towards the girls with a mixture of curiosity and confidence.
Rinoa tried to keep her cool, but the pressure was starting to weigh on her. "Last time we lost to you and your team so. But the results will be different this time. If we meet in the grand finals," she added, pointing her finger at Niri.
Niri listened to Rinoa with a calm look on her face, her expression hard to read. However, Rinoa couldn't shake the feeling that she was being sized up and analyzed, even without saying a word.
Niri turned to Rinoa, her expression still composed and determined. "I'm looking forward to your performance Mitsuki-san. Don't be too careless if you were exploited." Niri's words seemed to hit Rinoa hard, and she felt a twinge of nerves in her gut. She tried to steady herself but couldn't shake the feeling that Niri had gotten under her skin.
As Niri headed for the bathroom, Rinoa watched her go, but she couldn't help but notice the other girls gossiping and staring at her. She felt a mix of determination and frustration as the officials jumped in, telling them that they only had five minutes to start the match.
After Niri and the others went out to the court, one of Kitagawa Daiichi's players found Rinoa outside the bathroom. "Is something the matter, Rinoa-chan!?" Azami asked, her voice filled with concern.
"No, it's nothing," Rinoa responded quickly, trying to shake off the feeling of unease that had been building up inside her. "What's up?"
Azami gestured towards the court. "We have to warm up because the tournament is about to start," she explained.
Rinoa nodded grimly. "It's about time. Oh crap!! We gotta move." Azami and Rinoa ran to the court, but Rinoa couldn't help but stop for a moment before looking at the bathroom where Niri was heading. She felt a strange mix of emotions - part of her wanted to focus on the game, but another part of her was still thinking about Niri and their brief encounter.
Tomomi Suno and Hinami Sakurai, Rinoa's teammates, were warming up on the court. Tomomi, with her olive short hair and purple eyes, walked around the court, observing the other girls practicing receiving, serving, setting, and spiking the ball. Some of the girls were jogging around the court while others were doing stretches. Hinami, with her yellow ponytail and teal eyes, wore the same jersey as Tomomi and was stretching beside her.
"What are you looking at?" asked Hinami, noticing Tomomi's gaze.
Tomomi replied, "Oh, nothing... Just looking at them makes me interested."
Hinami patted Tomomi's shoulder. "Don't get the wrong idea. Rinoa is here too. You don't want to miss the tournament, do you?"
Tomomi shook her head. "Of course not, Hinami. I'm ready to help Rinoa-chan win this tournament."
As the players from Kitagawa Daiichi warmed up on the court, Rinoa waved her hands to signal to Tomomi and Hinami. Tomomi and Hinama ran over to her quickly.
"Is the tournament started yet?" Tomomi asked, her eyes glued to the opposite direction.
"Yes, it has started. We need to practice as if every moment is precious," Azami stated, trying to get everyone's attention. Before they could get started, all the players seemed drawn to a conversation between the Niiyama girls. Everyone appeared to be listening to the Niiyama girls as they gossiped about Kitagawa Daiichi and their upcoming matchup.
As Azami scanned the Niiyama team, she noticed Kurosawa-san, the tall girl with a middle parted bang. "So Kurosawa-san is the team captain?" she asked.
Hatori Minami, the girl with brown eyes and hair and a single bang, replied, "You mean the tall girl with a middle parted bang? She seems silent to me."
The girls from Kitagawa Daiichi exchanged glances before redirecting their attention to their own team. Without further delay, they immediately began to warm up for the tournament. It seemed that as soon as the game began, tension filled the air. Nobody had an idea of what to expect from this match.
Hatori looked at Rinoa and said, "I think we need to start training and improve if we want to reach the finals against the Niiyama team."
Rinoa nodded in agreement. "Exactly. We don't want to be seen as a joke by them," she said with determination. They tuned out the crowd as the players began training. It was clear that they weren't going to let the Niiyama girls, or anyone else for that matter, get the upper hand.
As the girls on other teams cleared out of the random court, Kitagawa Daiichi noticed an open court waiting for them.
Tomomi, excited to use this opportunity to get some extra practice, pressed her fists against her chest. "Look, girls, the court is empty. This is our chance to practice while we still can, Rinoa."
Rinoa encouraged everyone, clapping and saying, "Come on, girls. Let's get to it." It was evident that the team was ready to train seriously, even if it meant sacrificing some vacation time.
Kitagawa Daiichi took advantage of the empty court and began training. The team captain and her members were focusing on their sets and spikes. They practiced receiving, serving, setting, and spiking the ball, getting ready for their upcoming matches. They were determined to give their best and reach their goals.
Hinami is the only libero on the team, making her a crucial asset for defense. They trained with her, honing their rolls and dives to be more effective when making plays.
Hinami would dive forward, grabbing the ball mid-air, and then roll to her feet to complete the play. She did this with ease and grace, making her a valuable asset to the team.
Sayori Serizawa, a talented player with brown eyes, glasses, and a hime cut bang hairstyle, admired Hinami's skills. "Nice dive, Hinami," she praised. "You're improving so quickly."
Hinami beamed with pride at the compliment, eager to show off her skills in the upcoming matches. She and her team would not only practice defense, but also offense and passing. They wanted to be ready for anything, especially facing Niiyama's powerful hitters.
Hinami was determined to improve her diving skills even further, and Sayori was willing to help. Sayori grabbed a ball and spiked it farther, giving Hinami a distance challenge. Hinami ran towards the ball and dove, just barely being able to receive it.
"Nice!" she exclaimed, excited that she was able to make the play. As she emerged from her dive, Hinami couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. She had come so far since becoming a libero for Kitagawa Daiichi, and she knew that she would continue to improve and excel in her role.
Mitsuki, one of the hitters on Kitagawa Daiichi, slammed the ball hard on the open court. Her impressive shot drew an enthusiastic response from her teammates as they watched her play. Their setter, Tomomi, was amused by the shot, as was the team captain, Rinoa. Rinoa gave Mitsuki a thumbs up and encouraged her to keep it up. It seemed that the team was really starting to gel, with everyone playing their roles and supporting one another.
Azami, a vice-captain of Kitagawa Daiichi, was eager to join in on the fun. She motioned for Tomomi to set her the ball, which Tomomi did. Azami then took a swing at the ball, just like Rinoa had done before her. The rest of the team cheered and gave her encouragement, with Tomomi even praising her for her skill. They all seemed to be truly enjoying themselves as they practiced, and the team's chemistry was only growing stronger with every passing moment.
The girls were getting increasingly nervous as they wondered who they would be up against. Hatori decided to ask the question out loud, hoping someone would have some information. But no one seemed to know. Just then, Azami walked up to one of the officials on the court, a male referee, and asked him about their opponent.
"Excuse me, sir," Azami said, grabbing the referee's attention. "Do you know who we will be facing in our first round?"
The referee looked at his watch and replied, "You will be facing Tomozaki Junior High. You only have ten minutes until the match begins."
The girls were a bit nervous hearing this information, but also excited. They made their way to the other court with their gear, ready to face Tomozaki Junior High in their first round. It was going to be a tough matchup, but they were ready to give it their all.
Sayori, with her eyes closed and a smile on her face, chimed in, "Facing an easy opponent wouldn't be much of a hassle." She seemed confident and relaxed.
Yoshie then said, "But the second round will get harder as we face other teams. We already have experience with this playoff process throughout the years, and we have improved ourselves." She shrugged her shoulders, showing a hint of nervousness.
All of a sudden, Azami spoke up, waving her hands around to make her point clear. "Don't just assume that we're not going to reach the playoffs just because we haven't faced our opponents in the first round. Let's think about it this way – one of the other teams could have third-year students, just like us. This could be their last chance to play together, and they're just as passionate about it as we are. Trust me, they're not messing around."
Rinoa and Ayumi both nodded in agreement. Rinoa stepped forward, placing her hands on her hips. "I believe in our vice-captain, Azami. She has a strong will, and she knows we must never underestimate our enemy, even if they are the weakest. But above that, we play like we always do because it feels like we're having fun." Rinoa turned to look at her teammates.
Azami stepped forward next, with a nod. "You're absolutely right, team captain. We don't underestimate Niiyama's team captain because we have high expectations for ourselves. We know that with our skills and the hard work we've put in, we can go toe-to-toe with her. That's the mentality we need to have."
Ayumi joined the conversation last, with a smile and excitement on her face. "Yes, you're both right. All teams are strong, even the weaker ones. Everyone has their own fighting spirit and unwavering drive to reach the top. And that's exactly what we want as a team. We will be in grand finals in no time!
"And despite all of that, we can finally do this and bring our best." Rinoa and her teammates gathered in a tight circle, doing the hand stack together. They looked determined, as if they were ready to face any challenge head-on. Rinoa shouted, "1. 2. 3. Kitagawa!!" as all members in the circle echoed her enthusiasm. With a final "Fight!!" for good measure, they seemed to be ready to take on their opponents with full passion.
--
The referee's whistle echoed across the gymnasium, signaling the start of the game. As the girls lined up for their customary greetings, the sound of their shoes clacking against the wood floor created an upbeat tempo. Tomozaki girls' volleyball team looked confident in their full white and half red uniforms, while Kitagawa's team wore their blue and white kits with pride. Hinami on the other hand, her jersey stood out with its bold color scheme. The white and blue pattern on her kit added a touch of flair to her overall appearance, making it easy for the audience to spot her on the court. The blue shorts she wore added a sense of agility to her look. The libero on Tomozaki's side stood out with her fully red uniform.
As Rinoa and the opposing captain made their way to the middle, the referee signaled for them to shake hands. Rinoa took a deep breath and stepped forward, putting on a brave face. She extended her hand with determination in her eyes, ready to show that she wasn't afraid of whatever was to come. The opposing captain smiled and shook Rinoa's hand with a warm gesture, signaling that they were ready for the match to begin.
After the greetings, both teams took their positions on opposite sides of the net. The energy was palpable as they began their stretches. They all had their eyes locked on the ball, ready to serve and receive.
As the signal for the serve was given, Rinoa stepped forward with a confident grin on her face. Her teammates stood in formation behind her, each one ready to play their part in this match. Tomomi Suno, the team's setter, was on the front right, her focus on the opponent's team, while Ayumi Kihara stood next to her on the front middle with her arms raised, ready to block the ball. Sayori Serizawa, the team's wing spiker, stood on the front left, her stance showing her determination to win the match. Azami Inoue, the team's vice-captain, was on the back right, her eyes fixed on the opposing team, eager for her chance to serve the next point. Hinami, the team's libero, was on the back middle, ready to support the team wherever she was needed. As the game was about to begin, all players were ready to give their best and fight for the win.
With a burst of energy, Rinoa stepped up to the service line, tossing the ball smoothly up in the air. She then jumped and swung her arm with all her might, using her well-honed technique to send the ball soaring towards the opposing team. As she watched it sail over the net, she couldn't help but feel a sense of pride at her abilities. With a loud thwack, the ball hit the court, and the opposing team scrambled to return it. But it was clear from their demeanor that they weren't prepared for Rinoa's powerful spike, as #2's dive barely reached the ball.
With a yell of enthusiasm, Rinoa and her teammates let out a celebratory cheer, while the bench players jumped to their feet to join in. The starting lineup swarmed around Rinoa, high-fiving and hugging her, as if to congratulate her for scoring the first point of the game.
"Let's do this like last time," Rinoa said to her teammates, with a confident nod. They all nodded in response, ready to follow her lead.
She took her place on the serving line, ready to deliver the ball with all her might. As she prepared for the serve, she thought back to their previous game, when they had used a similar strategy to great success.
With a deep breath, she threw the ball up into the air and took a few steps forward, building momentum for her serve. She then lunged forward and swung her arm back, sending the ball flying towards the opposing team with all her strength. The ball hit the court with a thud, and the opposing team scrambled to react.
Rinoa's teammates were already ready, moving into position to take advantage of the open court. They watched as the ball bounced off the floor and up into the air, ready to capitalize on the opportunity. With each successful play, their confidence grew, and they seemed to gain strength with each passing point. They were a well-oiled machine, working together seamlessly to dominate the game.
Rinoa stood at the serving line, ready to send another ball over the net. She kept her eyes on the opposing team, looking for any weaknesses or patterns in their play. As she tossed the ball, she thought back to their previous match, when they had used a similar strategy to great success. She took a deep breath and began her approach, feeling the familiar weight of the ball in her hand. The movement of her body was fluid and practiced, like she had done this a hundred times before.
She leapt into the air and struck the ball with all her might, putting everything she had into the shot. The ball soared over the net and landed on the opposing team's side, leaving them scrambling to return the ball. As it bounced off the floor and up into the air, Rinoa's teammates were already on the move, ready to take advantage of the open court.
With each successful point, Rinoa gained even more confidence, feeling the excitement of the game coursing through her veins. The sound of her teammates cheering her on only fueled her drive, and she felt like she could win every point. Kitagawa Daiichi continued to dominate, with Rinoa leading the way.
As Hinami received the ball, she quickly found Rinoa with her eyes, who was now sprinting to the left. Rinoa was already in position to spike the ball, but Tomomi had already noticed and was ready to set it up for her.
"Tomomi over here!" Rinoa called out, her voice full of determination and adrenaline, as she prepared to smash the ball into the opposing team's court with all her might. Tomomi reacted immediately, setting the ball up for Rinoa with a smooth underhand toss, allowing the captain to execute a powerful spike.
Azami had been waiting for this moment, and she didn't disappoint. As she launched herself into the air, Sayori charged forward, faking a spike to fool the opposing team. The ball took a slight wind and launched off into the distance, but Rinoa was ready. She dashed sideways, her eyes focused on the ball as she leapt into the air.
The opposing team's #7 tried to jump for the ball, but Rinoa's strike was too powerful. The ball soared through the air and landed on the opposing team's court with a thud, giving Kitagawa Daiichi another point.
Rinoa cheered loudly after each point, encouraging her teammates to keep up the good work. They huddled up briefly to discuss their strategy and give each other encouragement. As they took their positions on the court, Rinoa could feel the tension building. Everyone knew that this was a pivotal moment in the game.
Kitagawa Daiichi seemed to be in top form, scoring point after point with their powerful spikes and solid serves. Their opponents from Tomozaki were doing their best to keep up, but it was clear that they were struggling to contain the onslaught of Kitagawa's attacks.
Rinoa took a deep breath and focused all her energy on the next serve. She tossed the ball up into the air and struck it with all her might, sending it flying over the net with a loud crack. The Tomozaki team scramble to return the ball, but they barely put up a fight. Rinoa's spike was too powerful for them to handle. The Kitagawa girls were scoring point after point with ease.
23-7
As the game progressed and the score started to become more and more lopsided in Rinoa's favor, she and her teammates couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration take over. They were on the cusp of victory, and they knew it.
With each passing point scored, the girls couldn't help but let out little giggles of excitement. They could feel the adrenaline coursing through their veins, propelling them towards victory. It was like they were on a high, and nothing could bring them down.
But, as with any competitive game, the girls also knew that they couldn't let their guard down. They were facing off against an opponent who was just as skilled as they were. So, even as they cheered for themselves, they remained focused, ready for anything that might come their way.
#5 set the ball up for her teammate with a smooth underarm toss, her body already in position to strike the ball with all her might. And yet, Rinoa and her teammates had anticipated the move and were ready to block the powerful spike.
As the ball sailed towards them, Rinoa and Ayumi moved in unison, their hands moving up in sync to form a barrier between the ball and the court. Even Azami, who had been watching from the back, charged forward, determined not to let the ball slip past her.
Their efforts were successful, and the ball hit the ground with a thud, giving Kitagawa Daiichi another point on the board. They were one more point away from victory, and it seemed like they were in control of the match.
With her teammates cheering her on, Rinoa ran down the court, ready to serve another powerful spike. And this time, she was determined to end the set in style. She tossed the ball high into the air and, with all her force, struck it with a powerful right-handed serve.
The ball sailed through the air and landed dead on her opponent's side of the court. #10, who had been caught off guard, could only watch in amazement as the ball hurtled towards her. She attempted to leap up and return it, but it was too late. The ball hit her squarely in the chest before bouncing off the corner of the court.
The girls erupted in celebration, their adrenaline still pumping from the game. Rinoa was thrilled to have ended the set on such a high note, and she and her teammates could barely contain their excitement. The first set was theirs for the taking, and it felt like all their hard work had finally paid off.
With the score at 25-7, it was clear that Kitagawa Daiichi was the clear winner of the first set. They were on a roll, and there was no sign of slowing down.
--
As the second set began, everyone on Kitagawa Daiichi was filled with a sense of determination to take the win. They had been dominant in the first set, and they knew that they had to keep up the pressure if they wanted to maintain their lead.
Yoshie stepped in as a substitute for Hatori, and Rinoa was ready to serve. She struck the ball with power and precision, sending it flying over the net with a satisfying crack. The opponents were caught off guard, and the ball sailed past them untouched, giving Kitagawa Daiichi the first point of the set.
From there, Rinoa, Ayumi and Azami dominated the court, their combination attacks leaving their opponents reeling. Hinami was a force to be reckoned with as well, making spectacular diving saves and passing the ball back to Yoshie for her to deliver deadly attacks.
23-6
As the game progressed, Kitagawa Daiichi continued to steamroll their opponents, and it soon became clear that the win was theirs for the taking. With a dominant lead and only a few points remaining, it seemed all but certain that Kitagawa Daiichi would emerge victorious.
The members of the Tomozaki team were at a loss for words. They'd never faced such a skilled and coordinated team before, and they couldn't believe how quickly they'd been overpowered.
Player #7, breathing heavily, spoke up. "I can't believe it. We're up against a team we've never even heard of before, and they're just destroying us."
Player #10 nodded in agreement. "Yeah, I didn't think we'd face such strong opponents this early on. But they're playing like they've been playing together for years."
Player #2 spoke up next, sounding frustrated. "It's like they're not even breaking a sweat. How do they do it? We've been practicing hard for weeks, and we can barely compete with them."
The Tomozaki team members looked at each other, clearly struggling to come to terms with their situation. They were completely outmatched, and they didn't know how to turn the tide in their favor.
Despite their best efforts to remain focused and determined, the Tomozaki players couldn't help but feel hopeless as the match slipped through their fingers. They knew that they were on the verge of elimination, and it seemed like there was nothing they could do to prevent it.
The team captain let out a deep sigh, her hands still on her knees as she tried to catch her breath. "We're on the verge of getting eliminated," she muttered, her voice heavy with defeat. "That's it."
As the referee's whistle sounded, the Tomozaki players were caught off guard by the sudden interruption. They turned to see that Rinoa had already served the ball, and they hadn't even noticed. The ball struck the floor, and the Kitagawa Daiichi players burst into cheers as they secured match point.
"I can't believe we let that happen," player #7 exclaimed, her voice filled with exasperation. "We were so focused on complaining that we missed the serve entirely."
"It's just a game," player #9 said, trying to offer up some words of encouragement. "We did our best, and that's all that matters."
As the Tomozaki players prepared to leave the court, they couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. On one hand, they were disappointed in the loss. On the other hand, they knew that they had given it their all, and that was something to be proud of. They would walk away from this match a little more experienced, and a little wiser for it.
From the Tomozaki bench, Hatori watched as Mitsuki stepped up to serve the ball. Hatori cheered for her teammate, happy to see her playing with such enthusiasm.
As Rinoa approached the service line, the Tomozaki players glared at their opponents, determined to turn the match around. Rinoa served the ball, aiming for player #7, who barely managed to receive the ball.
Player #5 swatted the ball up with both arms, passing it to #4. The ball almost hit the floor, but #4 managed to dive just in time to send it to the other side of the net. Hinami scrambled to dive with her to keep the ball in play, barely missing as the ball made its way over the net.
Tomomi stood at the ready, waiting for the ball to reach her. As the ball approached, she stepped forward, meeting it with a powerful set that sailed high into the air. The ball almost hit the floor before #7 made a last-ditch effort to keep it in play, sending it high into the air before it bounced back over the net.
"Left side!" someone yelled, but it was too late. Rinoa had dashed to the right, her eyes locked on the ball as she took off after it. Tomomi, caught off guard, quickly set the ball to the right.
In an amazing show of teamwork and coordination, Tomomi quickly moves to set the ball to Rinoa, giving her the opportunity to strike it with all her might. Rinoa unleashes a fierce spike that flies straight towards the Tomozaki team, leaving them speechless.
Three players from the back desperately try to dive for the ball, but it's too far out of reach, and the referees blow the whistle, signaling the end of the match with a final score of 25-6 in favor of Kitagawa Daiichi. The Tomozaki team looks completely defeated, unable to comprehend the sheer dominance of their opponents.
The girls from Kitagawa Daiichi let out a collective shout of victory as they jumped for joy on the court. Their excitement was contagious, and even the Tomozaki team couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for their opponents.
As the Kitagawa Daiichi players celebrated their victory, the crowd erupted into applause, recognizing the incredible performance they had just witnessed. The team then lined up shoulder to shoulder on the rear court and bowed to their opponents in honor of the match.
Finally, the two teams gathered at the net in the middle of the court and exchanged handshakes, showing both respect and good sportsmanship. It was a difficult loss for the Tomozaki team, but they took it in stride, realizing that they had the opportunity to learn and grow from this experience. As they walked off the court, they could hold their heads high knowing that they had given it their all.
As the Kitagawa Daiichi players walked off the court, there was a sense of excitement in the air. Rinoa, who had just spiked the ball to win the match, was beaming from ear to ear. "Let's win this through the preliminary and get to the next round!" she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. "But... I just couldn't hold it... It was exciting, even if it's our last tournament. I really want more."
Tomomi listened to Rinoa's words with a slight smile on her face. "Yeah, but wouldn't be exciting like... We already have one in the past 2 years," she said thoughtfully. "We cannot comprehend that we forgot the loss to niiyama last year."
Hatori, who had been standing next to Tomomi, chimed in. "Don't worry. Our loss to niiyama would be a hard lesson for us. We easily can make it to the 2nd round. The hard one like we were in first years. But I realized it was easier."
Their vice captain, Azami, spoke up, her voice filled with determination. "Girls, let us think this. Reaching the grand finals is our pure medicine for once in a lifetime," she said. "We have a long way ahead of us."
Rinoa, who had spiked the ball to win the match, nodded in agreement. "Ok, I get you Azami-san," she said. "Let us rest a bit and prepare for our next match." The girls nodded, eager to catch their breath and regroup before their next match.
