Chapter Ten
Today was a market day. Helping set the merchandise up for the day, Danielle grabs King as he was about to fall off the stand. Staring proudly at her work, Danielle turns around and sees Boscha and a few other Hexside students.
"Hey Boscha," said Danielle, staring at Boscha and her friends. "Anything you want?"
"Ew! No," replied Boscha, before summoning her Penstagram scroll. "I'm just here to take an ironic Penstagram."
"Hmmm," said Danielle, a thought going through her head.
"What are you going to do?" asked Boscha, staring at Danielle. "Spit your human venom on me?"
"You have venom?" said King, looking at Danielle. "Quick, Danielle, start melting faces!"
"I don't have venom King," said Danielle, looking at King. "Besides, it's not worth it. You're still young, you wouldn't understand how to handle teens like her."
"No, I'll show you what to do" said King, grabbing Danielle's hood before jumping on the table. "You will tremble before me!"
"Oh, he's so cute!" said Boscha, grabbing King before taking pictures.
"Weh!" said King, pushing Boscha's face away.
"How much? I have to own him," said Boscha, staring at Danielle.
"Not for sell," said Danielle, grabbing King. "But those photos are. Ten silver snails for each one you just took."
"I'll just delete them," said Boscha, about to delete the photos.
"The moment you took them, the moment you pay up," said Danielle, eyeing Boscha before setting off a plant glyph. "And you will pay."
"Ugh, alright, fine," said Boscha, handing over the fifty silver snails before being let go.
"I smell an easy mark," said Eda, before jumping out of the tent. "Hey, kid! Can I offer you the latest fashions from... the human realm?"
"Yeah, no," replied Boscha, walking away with her friends.
"Well," said Eda, changing her clothes back to normal. "I hate her."
"Yeah, us teens are enigmas," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "I'd say poof away all your problems away with magic but…"
"What does Danielle know about problems, anyway?" said King, walking on the stand. "All she has is dumb teen drama! She doesn't understand how hard some of us have it."
"Hey, I under…." said Danielle, staring at King.
"You're pampered all day like a dang baby," said Eda, staring at King. "How hard is that life?
"Well, I don't know if you realized, but I'm not a baby!" said King, screaming.
"King, you're kinda acting like one right now," said Danielle, looking at King.
"My life is a living nightmare!" said King, still screaming.
"Well, there's only one thing to do when friends can't see eye-to-eye," said Eda, looking at Danielle and King.
"Talk it out," said Danielle, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Fight to the death!" said King, staring at Eda.
"Pfft, no," said Eda, looking at Danielle and King. "Body Swap!"
"Are you sure you don't shoot venom?" asked King, looking at Danielle.
"I love a good body swap," said Eda, shaking her staff slightly. "It's like demonic possession with the ones you love."
"So, a walk in each other's shoes," said Danielle, thinking about it. "Maybe we should think about this."
"Body swap!" said Eda, initiating the spell.
"Okay, that felt oddly weird," said Danielle, before looking at a mirror and seeing herself in Eda's body. "Okay, I'm in Eda's body."
"I'm the human now," said King, seeing he was in Danielle's body. "Bow before my massive, meaty hands!"
"You okay King?" asked Danielle, steadying King as he wobbles.
"Ugh, wow," said King, holding his head. "Your body is not agreeing with me. I am not feeling so good."
"Maybe you ought to sit down," said Danielle, getting King to sit down. "But this means Eda is…"
"How do I look?" asked Eda, posing in King's body.
"I've got some... very confusing emotions right now," said King, staring at Eda.
"All right, here's the deal," said Eda, looking at Danielle and King. "Whoever can prove their new body has the easiest life gets out of house cleaning duty. And you know what that means."
"Won't be me. Life as a teen is a tyrant's dream!" said King, looking at Danielle. "By the end of the day, I'll be ruling over your feeble demographic."
"I'll make sure to sell as much stuff as I can," said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"If you need me, I'll be getting pampered on a vacation fit for a king," said Eda, jumping off the stand.
"My life's not a joke! But yours is," said King, looking at Danielle and poking her nose before running off. "Bap!"
"Looks like it's just me. Ugh, how does Eda wear these?" said Danielle, walking behind the stand before trying to do magic and making the lamp look weird. "Geesh Louis, Eda's magic is strong. And I made the lamp ugly."
"Ooh, so unnecessarily extravagant," said a Passing Customer, looking at the lamp. "I'll take it."
"To each their own, I guess," said Danielle, making the lamp walk with the Passing Customer as they tossed a snail her way. "Alright then, let's see what else I can do."
As the day went on, Danielle was able to sell quite a few stuff from the stand. Magicking a pacifier into a baby mouth's to calm the little one down. Selling a few feather dusters, among other things. By the end of it all, Danielle had accrued a fair number of snails for Eda.
"Thank you! Come again!" said Danielle, waving bye to the customers. "Eda the Owl Lady's life isn't that bad so far."
"Is that right?" asked a Guard, wearing a cloak to hide his identity. "You're the famous Eda the Owl Lady?"
"That depends," said Danielle, pointing her finger at the Guard. "Who wants to know?"
"I do," said the Guard, cuffing Danielle and taking his cloak off.
"You guys never quit, do ya?" said Danielle, glaring at the Guard.
"I was able to catch you in the act," said the Guard, trying to drag Danielle with him to no avail.
"All I did was sell my merchandise," said Danielle, staring at the Guard. "How is that wrong?"
"You're making this harder than it should be," said the Guard, looking at Danielle.
"Fine, I'll go, only to shut you up," said Danielle, glaring at the Guard. "But if I spot anything that I deem wrong, I'm leaving. One way or another."
Taking Danielle to the nearest police precinct, the Guard pushes her into a room after her photo was taken. Sitting and waiting, Danielle actually is getting nervous by being there. Seeing the door open, Danielle notices Lilith enter.
"A familiar face," said Danielle, watching Lilith walk over.
"Hello, Edalyn," said Lilith, staring at Danielle.
"Lilith, hey," said Danielle, giving a two-finger salute.
"Do you know why you're here?" asked Lilith, staring at Danielle.
"Unfortunately, no," replied Danielle, looking at Lilith.
"Sister," said Lilith, unfurling a scroll. "The charges against you are long and many. Operating a stand without a permit, owning a hocus without a pocus..."
"Okay, I can see why for the stand now," thought Danielle, staring at the long list before looking at Lilith. "That is a long list."
"These charges are serious," said Lilith, looking at Danielle. "There's no more running away, Edalyn."
"Poofing away problems is not easy," said Danielle, readying a plant glyph.
"But we can," said Lilith, holding Danielle's shoulders. "You getting caught was clearly a cry for help. Join the Emperor's Coven, like we dreamed about when we were girls."
"Wait…" said Danielle, hearing what was just said. "Eda wanted to be part of the Emperor's Coven."
"Don't be afraid, sister," said Lilith, grabbing Danielle's hands. "Soon, you won't be a danger to those around you. Bring out the branding glove."
"The what now?" said Danielle, seeing a Guard put on a specific glove before activating the plant glyph. "Yeah, I don't think so."
"Edalyn!" shouted Lilith, tangled in vines.
"Look I'm going to make this clear," said Danielle, staring at Lilith. "I am not your sister at the moment. Surely, you've heard of a body swap."
"Why yes, of course," said Lilith, before realization dawned on her. "You're the human."
"Exactly," said Danielle, staring at Lilith. "Did you ever think why Eda doesn't want to be a part of the coven system? Could it be something happened when she was younger that deterred her away?"
"Well…" said Lilith, before thinking back to a certain day. "It couldn't…"
"Respect her choice in life. Owlbert, to my side," said Danielle, before grabbing the staff as it flew her way. "I think I'll leave you as is to reflect on your actions."
Leaving the police precinct, Danielle mounts Eda's staff. Searching all over from the sky, Danielle lands near a kitty café.
"Danielle!" shouted Eda, from within a display window. "Bring my dang body over here."
"Eda! King!" said Danielle, before entering the shop. "What did you two do?"
"Oh, a customer," said an Elderly Woman, staring at Danielle.
"I'll be taking my kids, thank you very much," said Danielle, helping Eda pull King out of the display window.
"Your kids?" said the Elderly Woman, shocked.
"Yes, my kids. Got a problem with that?" asked Danielle, seeing the Elderly Woman nod her head "No". "Good, let's get going you two."
"You handled that surprisedly well," said Eda, exiting the kitty café.
"What I want to know is…" said Danielle, staring at King. "What did you do with my body?"
"I… well… dang!" said King, seeing Boscha and her friends flying towards them. "I forgot about them."
"Hey!" shouted Boscha, being entangled in vines with her friends after Danielle set off a plant glyph. "Human!"
"I'd like my body back please," said Danielle, looking at Eda.
"All right," said Eda, staring at Danielle and King. "Did everybody learn a valuable lesson about experiencing each other's hardships?"
"Yep," replied King, staring at Eda.
"It wasn't that hard to understand," said Danielle, looking at Eda. "Everyone has hardships."
"Good, let's end this nightmare," said Eda, before spinning her staff. "Body Swap!"
"My body! My glorious little body!" said King, glad to be back in his body.
"How come you guys didn't use any of the glyphs during your escapade?" asked Danielle, looking at Eda and King.
"I may have forgotten about them," replied King, looking to the side.
"Where would King even place them?" asked Eda, only to see Danielle pull one out of the collar on King. "Oh."
"Wait a minute!" shouted Boscha, gaining Danielle's attention. "Are you saying that I wasn't dealing with you?"
"As you just saw Boscha, there was a body swap involved," said Danielle, looking at Boscha. "What did King break that I have to fix?"
"Our shack!" shouted Boscha, glaring at Danielle.
"Lead the way," said Danielle, untangling Boscha before she led the way to the shack. "King! The heck… how did you…"
"I'll explain later," said King, sighing.
"Fine," said Danielle, before setting off a plant glyph to fix the shack. "There, is that better?"
"Whoa," said Boscha, staring at the craftmanship that was now the shack before looking at Danielle. "Date me."
"What?" said Danielle, looking at Boscha with a shocked face.
"You heard me," said Boscha, staring at Danielle. "Date me."
"I-I-I-I can't… no," said Danielle, backing away from Boscha.
"Why not?" asked Boscha, glaring at Danielle. "Is it frowned upon in your realm to date another in my realm?"
"Well, no," replied Danielle, lightly scratching her cheek. "It's just…"
"Well?" said Boscha, looking at Danielle.
"It's highly discouraged in my family to date someone of the same sex," replied Danielle, staring off to the side. "If I do, I'd lose any inheritance from my Grampa."
"Say what?" asked Eda, looking at Danielle.
"My grampa is very old fashioned in a lot of things," replied Danielle, twiddling her fingers. "If he finds out your gay and the likes, you're not invited back into the family or allowed to come over for holidays. He'll even try and fix you."
"Well, that's wrong," said Eda, placing a hand on Danielle's shoulder.
"Grampa already fixed my cousin," said Danielle, looking at the ground. "Xander hasn't been himself since then."
"Well, when you decide you don't want to be afraid of your grampa," said Boscha, turning and walking away. "You know where to find me."
"Okay…" said Danielle, before looking at Eda. "It's getting late. How bout we head back home?"
"Alright," said Eda, mounting her staff alongside Danielle and King before heading back to the Owl House.
"Hooty still needs cleaning, doesn't he?" said Danielle, before touching her nose. "Not it."
"Not it," said King, mimicking Danielle.
"Dangit!" said Eda, groaning before hearing Hooty in the distance.
"Guys? Today's my monthly cleaning. Hoot, hoot. I'm 20% mucus, but don't let that stop you," said Hooty, curling up in the mud. "C'mon, I have so many hard-to-reach spots that need swabbing!"
