After reading Werewolf Skin, i decided to write a fanfic showing what might have happened after Hannah attacked Alex. Naturally, he's a werewolf now too, so his life will never be the same. But i didn't want to show Hannah as a villain either, i need her to be sympathetic, like she turns Alex so she won't be alone. I'm also going to reveal who turned HER. Spoiler: it wasn't Collin or Marta. Naturally, for a place named Wolf Creek, there are LOTS of other werewolves, some who have fully embraced their werewolf side and LOVE being one, and want to remain one. The later half of the story will cross over with the Werewolf Of Fever Swamp, as the kids search for a permanent cure. Be warned: this will be a quite dark story, with lots of violence, some quite graphic, as well as language, and a later scene will feature sex between two minor children, ie two 12 year olds. Yes, Alex and Hannah fuck, so if you're squeamish, turn away.
Goosebumps is owned by R.L. Stine and Scholastic. The only characters i own are some original characters i introduce along the way.
Chapter 1
Alex had been totally unprepared when Hannah jumped on him. Knocked to the floor, he struggled, trying to push the girl off of him. But having revealed herself as a werewolf, she had the strength of several girls her age. Before he could cry out for help, she sank her teeth into his chest.
Alex screamed as the pain shot through his body. He felt blood spurt from the wound. Desperately, he reached up and grabbed her head, trying to push her off. To his surprise, she stopped struggling and pulled her head up, standing up. Strangely, he eyes were wide with shock and confusion, as if she didn't realize what she had done.
"Oh my god, oh god, Alex, i am... i am SO sorry. I couldn't control it. Like i said, i got my skin just last night, and i haven't even hunted yet. I... i just had this urge. I couldn't help it. Please, Alex. I am so sorry!!!" She started crying as she got off of him and stood up.
Panting, his heart racing and his life still flashing before his eyes, Alex stood up, clutching his chest, which still hurt. Taking off his shirt, Alex saw to his surprise the wound wasn't that deep: barely bigger than a cat scratch. It still bled deeply though, as if he'd been shot or stabbed. Placing the shirt back on he turned to Hannah, who still stood rooted to the spot, breathing heavily and crying.
"Alex... please. I'm so sorry. I should have told you. I really should have, i don't know why i didn't. I just hoped you wouldn't find the skin..I..."
Her words were cut off as Alex rushed forward and shoved her to the ground. She fell to the floor, landing on her elbows on the hard floor. Now SHE looked afraid as Alex towared over her, but he was too delirious, too FURIOUS, to appreciate the irony.
"WHY??!!! WHY WOULD YOU KEEP THIS A SECRET FROM ME?!!! AFTER LAST NIGHT??!!!! AFTER ALL WE WENT THROUGH, HELPING MY AUNT AND UNCLE!!!! NOW IT'S ALL FOR NOTHING, CAUSE NOW I'M ONE TOO, BECAUSE OF YOU!!! TRAITOR!!!!!" He was yelling so loud, he was sure his aunt and uncle would soon be able to hear, but he didn't care. The betrayal of his only friend in this strange town had shattered him. Worse, he was now surely a werewolf too. A cursed, evil, bloodthirsty monster.
Hannah still lay on the floor, sobbing loudly. "Alex, PLEASE!!! It's complicated. I WANTED to tell you, i was GOING to when the time was right. Really!!"
Alex stood over her, fists balled. Rage and fear bubbled inside him like a dam filling with rain, threatening to overflow. He thought his heart would burst soon. Turning away from her, he walked over to the window with the torn curtains, taking several big, deep breaths. ' Calm down, Alex. Calm down. If you get too upset, you'll make things worse. You might even turn NOW, and things will DEFINITELY be worse...'
He heard her stand up behind him, and he turned around slowly to face her. She sniffed and wiped her face.
"Alex, please, listen to me." Her voice, usually husky and hoarse, was surprisingly lower, softer, possibly from crying. "I wanted to tell you, but i was too scared. The truth is, i was turned just before you came. But tonight really was the first time I've worn a skin, and you're the first person I've bitten. I think that's WHY i attacked you, because i haven't hunted yet. I couldn't control it. But unless i hunt soon, it's only going to get worse and worse."
Despite his anger, Alex spoke. "Well WHO turned you? And WHY would you WANT to be one? Do Aunt Marta or Uncle Colin know?"
She shook her head. "No, they don't. Look, it's a long story. " She sighed, and continued. "Look, i have an older brother, Luke. I was just a baby, like two or three, when he was bitten. My parents already knew the town was full of werewolves, but they never thought one would attack US. My parents searched for a cure, but there wasn't one. When he first turned, he killed the family dog. My parents were terrified, afraid he might hurt them or even ME. Then, the reverend of their church came to them, saying he ran a sanctuary for werewolves and other creatures, where they would be safe at night, safe from harming others, and people looking to kill THEM. The only condition was that THEY had to become werewolves too, if they wanted to visit him. Because werewolves never attack one of their own. USUALLY. So, they agreed, and let the reverend turn them. But I couldn't be turned yet. Until one reaches their tweens, a werewolf bite could be fatal. So I had to wait. Finally, this year, when I turned 12 a couple months ago. My mom and dad went ahead to live with my brother at the sanctuary, they told me it wouldn't be long. Finally, the other night, a member of the sanctuary was sent to turn me, and give me my skin."
Alex listened to her story, in complete shock. His head whirred as he listened to each detail, becoming more and more shocked and confused. By the time she had reached the end, the part about getting her skin, he was completely thunderstruck. He tried to think of what to say. He had so many questions, but all he could manage was: "So, um, wait, you've been living ALONE all this time I've known you?"
She nodded. "But they left tons of food, and money in case I needed to buy more, or clothes and stuff. They only left a couple days before I met you. Now that I'm officially a werewolf too, I can finally go join them."
Alex sat down on the floor as his head continued to spin. This was all too much to take in. Until only about a week ago, he didn't even BELIEVE in werewolves. Now, not only had he found out that his aunt and uncle were werewolves, but his friend-and practically neighbor-was one, and now, he probably was too.
Hannah sat down beside him. "Alex, look, I really AM so sorry. If I hadn't been such a stupid coward, I should have told you. I understand if you hate me. "
Alex sighed. "I don't hate you, Hannah. I mean, I'm scared, and hurt, and angry, but I'll get over it. I mean, we cured my aunt and uncle, so I'm sure we can find a way to cure ourselves. "
"That's just the thing, Alex", Hannah said, her eyes wide with fear. " I don't think it actually CURED them. They couldn't turn because we had the skins, but they just FELT like they were cured because they held out at the full moon. But remember how much in pain they looked? They thought that was the curse being lifted, but I think that was just the pain of not being able to turn. I think every time they don't turn, the pain will get worse. I once heard my parents talking, and my dad mentioned a friend of his, another werewolf, who hid his skin in the forest, buried it, because robbers broke into his house. He lived a bad neighborhood with a lot of crime, and he was worried the robbers might come back and steal more stuff, maybe even his skin. So he buried it, but forgot where. He tried all day to find the spot, but couldn't find it. He even had my dad help, but they couldn't find it. That night, my dad's friend was in terrible pain, just like your aunt and uncle. The next day he got very sick. Again he searched, but again couldn't find it. He started getting sicker, became delirious, because he was still a werewolf and needed to hunt, needed to walk under the moon as a wolf. Then one day he was gone. My dad and the others searched for him, but they couldn't find him They think he might have gone off deep into the woods and died, or even killed himself, because he couldn't stand the pain, the insanity."
Alex stared at her in shock. "WHAT??!!! WHY didn't you TELL us that earlier?!!" He asked incredulously. " If you thought that Uncle Colin and Aunt Marta weren't cured, why didn't you SAY something?! Better yet, why did you agree to help with my plan?"
She sighed again. "I don't know, I guess I just HOPED it would work, but then I thought of that friend of my dad's, and now I'm pretty sure it DIDN'T. We should go check on them. If they're fine, it might have worked. If not..."
Her words were cut off as a loud howling echoed through the empty house. But strangely, the sound didn't seem to come from INSIDE the house, or even OUTSIDE. As crazy as it sounded, it seemed to come from... below them. Underground?
Alex turned to Hannah, and saw her eyes were wide with fear again. She shook her head and muttered quietly to herself. "Oh no, oh no, not that. Not that..."
Alex stared at her. " What? What is it?" He jumped as the howling rang out again. Suddenly the floor seemed to shake. Suddenly the floor right in front of him seemed to glow. Bright red, a perfect circle of blood-red. And out of the red circle, very slowly, rose a wolf.
The wolf climbed out of the hole in the floor and walked towards the children. The red circle vanished. It was bigger than any normal wolf, leaner. And its eyes... completely black, black as coals, as night itself. And those eyes were locked directly on Alex.
Alex took a step back. "Umm, Hannah? Hannah, what's going on?"
He heard her reply behind him, but didn't turn around. He didn't want to take his eyes off the wolf. "Alex, just stay calm. Whatever you do, stay calm. Don't panic. Don't run. Just stay. Calm."
The black-eyed wolf took another step toward Alex, then stopped. Suddenly, as Alex watched, the wolf's skin started sliding off!! Almost like a zipper on a jacket, the skin separated in the middle along its back, and started sliding off at the sides. Amazingly, the wolf had no bones, no blood, no organs. As the skin and fur fell off, underneath was another wolf, exactly identical to its owner, except more transparent, clear, as if it were a reflection in the water. Or, rather, like a ghost.
Finally, the fur of the wolf had all fallen, and now drew together in a neat pile, folded itself up magically, like a shirt or mattress folding up to be put away. The transparent wolf-ghost looked first at the skin it had shed, then looked back to Alex with those pitch-black eyes. Suddenly, still looking at Alex with those frightening eyes, it opened its mouth... and SPOKE!!!
"You and I are one now. One body, one spirit, sharing one skin. We are one with the skin, as we are one with the moon. Forever bonded, body and soul, bound by the laws of night. By the moon's rule we live, by the moon's rule we hunt. Till death we part."
Then, as if returning to a real wolf, it gave one last howl... and pounced. Before Alex could do anything, perhaps from being too surprised due to the wolf speaking, in addition to its skin falling off, the ghostly wolf jumped toward him.
Alex jumped back, trying to put some distance between him and the wolf, but the ghostly creature flew through the air easily. It flew towards him. Alex winced, bracing for impact, for the wolf to knock him down, sink its teeth into his throat, but as soon as the wolf made contact with him, it vanished. It appeared to go straight through his body. Alex spun around, looking behind him, expecting to see it emerge behind him, perhaps jump through the window, but he saw only Hannah, her face pale, her eyes wide. She appeared to be shaking.
"Where did it go? Where did he go, Hannah?", he asked nervously.
Hannah opened her mouth to reply, but whatever she said was cut off as Alex screamed in pain. The sudden blast of red-hot agony shot through every part of his body: his chest, stomach, even his arms and fingertips. His head felt like it was on fire. His chest felt like a fire had been lit inside of it. His vision literally went red, as if he had stared into the sun too long, and it had set his very eyes aflame. He grit his teeth to keep from screaming again. His legs kicked and thrashed uncontrollably. This was it, he knew. 'This is how I die. This is the end...'
Then, as suddenly as it had started, the pain was gone. His vision cleared, the redness gone. His ears buzzed faintly, possibly from his own screaming, and his arms and legs tingled a bit, as if they had fallen asleep, but otherwise the burning hot pain was gone. Breathing heavily, his heart racing, he tried to stand up. Hannah reached down and helped him, grabbing his arm. "It's ok, I got you. Come on."
Still breathing heavily, he looked her in the eyes, which he noticed still looked afraid. "What was that?!!", he cried. "What just happened??!"
She gulped nervously. "Alex. I'm so sorry, but it's official. You're a werewolf now. "
"WHAT???!!!!", he yelled, louder than he meant to. His ears were still ringing pretty bad.
She sighed. "That's how it happens. For werewolves like us anyway. For others it's different. The bite is like a marker. Once a person is bitten and cursed, a wolf spirit comes from the Underworld, through a Hell-mouth like the one you saw, and sheds its outer skin, like that one did. The skin is then gifted to you. Then, to make it official and eternal, the wolf spirit merges with YOUR soul. It ALWAYS hurts. Always. I thought I was going to die, like you probably did. It's always that bad."
Alex clasped a hand to his chest, as if expecting to feel the wolf spirit in there next to his soul, but only felt his heartbeat, which thankfully was returning to normal. Small miracles.
"Wait, so THAT'S how it happens? That's how werewolves get their skin? You? Your brother? Uncle Colin and Aunt Marta? Everyone?"
She nodded, then laughed. "Well, yeah. What, did you think like, somebody was going to MAIL it to you, with a tag that says something like "dry clean only" or something? Yes, that's how I got mine, same process you just went through, and your aunt and uncle too. Like I said, there's different types of werewolves, I'm sure they have different turning processes. As it happens, you and I are sort of a minority group of werewolves. The way we turn, by putting on and shedding the skin, is actually rare, so that actually means our kind is better at hiding, because most other werewolves have tell-tale signs in their human form, like excess body hair, long, claw-like fingernails, or abnormal eye colors, similar to vampires. Yes", she added, seeing his expression. "Yes,there's vampires too, and some live at the sanctuary here in town. Point is, be thankful you and me and Colin and Marta are THIS type of werewolves, because the skin doesn't leave any tell-tale marks hunters might recognize. Anyway, it's getting late, your aunt and uncle are probably wondering where we are. I'll put your skin next to mine", she said, reaching down and picking it up and setting it neatly next to hers.
"Thanks", Alex said. As they started out the window, heading back to Alex's relatives house,he turned to her.
"By the way, who bit YOU?", he asked.
She Sighed. "Well, just promise you won't tell anyone. It's supposed to be a secret. See, he doesn't like people knowing unless he comes to them. " She looked him in the eye. "It was Mr Shein. "
Alex gasped so loudly he was pretty sure dogs could hear. "THE TEACHER??!!!", he cried.
Hannah nodded. "Yes. In a way it's a perfect cover. He teaches classes on supposedly mythological creatures, like werewolves, to see if there's true believers, people who might WANT to turn, and, if the council judges them worthy, he's sent to turn them. He teaches at both the middle school and high school, so he gets lots of recruits."
Alex shook his head, amazed. "Wow, and I thought the teachers back home could be scary. Where did he bit you at anyway?", he asked.
Stepping into the streetlight a bit, she reached up to her right shoulder and pulled the top of her shirt over a bit. For a second, Alex was distracted by her bare shoulder and bra strap, but then noticed the teeth marks, similar to the ones she had left on his chest. To his surprise, they looked like they were beginning to heal, and he wondered, and hoped, if his would heal that fast.
She pulled the shirt back over her shoulder and faced him. As if reading his mind, she replied. "It's still a bit sore, since I only got it the other night, but it heals fast. Besides, compared to the soul merging, it's nothing, right? Anyway, let's go inside."
As they started toward the house again, Alex placed a hand on her arm to stop her. "Wait. Should we tell them, about... about me? I mean US? Being werewolves? And also that they might not be cured?"
Hannah frowned, looking at the ground, thinking hard. Then she shook her head. "No, not tonight. They were both so happy, thinking they were free of the curse. At least give them tonight. They'll find out tomorrow night, when they get sick. They'll know then. They need to hunt. WE will too. It'll be your first night, so you won't feel sick right away, but until you put on the skin and hunt,it'll only get worse. It's only my second night as a werewolf, and I'm already starting to feel woozy. Tomorrow night I HAVE to put my skin on. Tomorrow night. Once your aunt and uncle realize they're not free, once they put their skins back on, then we break out ours, and tell them everything. Deal?"
Alex nodded. "Sounds like a plan. Let's go in. Ummm." He turned around and looked at her. " Do you, um, want to spend the night? I mean, I'm sure they won't mind. After all, you helped them out tonight, or at least they think you did, so I'm sure they'll let you stay over. You can sleep on the couch. I think it's a pullout. "
She smiled. "Sure. I'd like that. "
They walked into the house. Alex was surprised. The kitchen was dim. When he and Hannah had gone to dump the skins at the Marling house, Aunt Marta had mentioned going to make doughnuts and hot chocolate. But the kitchen lights were out, and the only light was the little lamp in the living room. Alex and Hannah walked in. There, in the living room chairs, sat Uncle Colin and Aunt Marta. They both sat in the chairs, so still. Alex was shocked. They both looked so... pale.
"Uncle Colin? Aunt Marta? Guys?", Alex asked. Uncle Colin stirred, and Aunt Marta sat up in her chair. "Oh. I'm so sorry, dears. We must've fallen asleep. I don't know what happened. I was going in the kitchen to make us some hot chocolate, but then your uncle and I both suddenly felt really dizzy, and got this really bad stomach ache. I hope it's not the flu. I feel so hot. I'm afraid we'll have to wait till morning to have those doughnuts. Come on Colin, let's get to bed."
Alex and Hannah looked at each other. They both knew now: Hannah was right. The curse must not have been lifted. Colin and Marta were still werewolves. Now Alex and Hannah were too. But Hannah was right: this news should wait till tomorrow.
"Ummm, Aunt Marta? Hannah's going to spend the night. Can you get some blankets and a pillow for the couch?"
Aunt Marta nodded as she went to the linen closet and pulled out some blankets. "Sure. As long as it's ok with your parents, Hannah? You know, I haven't seen them in a couple weeks. I hope everything's OK with them? And your brother? He should be in college now?"
Hannah looked at Alex. He knew what she was thinking. The weight of all these secrets was crushing them both. "Uh, yeah, it's ok Marta. They're all fine", she said as she took the blankets and pillow from her. "Good night, Marta. Colin."
Once Marta and Colin walked off, Hannah turned to Alex as the pulled out the couch and put the blankets and covers on. "That was close.", she whispered. " But we have to tell them tomorrow. Everything. "
Alex nodded as he helped her. "Agreed. First thing tomorrow afternoon, BEFORE the sun sets. They'll probably start feeling worse by then. We shouldn't wait too long to break out OUR skins too. Maybe you should tell them about YOUR folks too, and your brother. "
She nodded. "Yes, yes. Everything. Look, we can do all of that later. Tomorrow I want to stop by the church, see if the reverend will let me into the sanctuary so I can see my family. You should come too. They'll want to meet you. It's not too far from here. "
He sighed. "Yeah, sure. I guess. But I still don't get it: how does a church work as a sanctuary? How do so many werewolves and vampires and others fit without people seeing or knowing about them?"
She shrugged as she finished setting up the blankets. Smoothing out the pillow, she prepared to climb onto the couch. "I don't know, Alex. I only know where the CHURCH is. I've only seen the reverend and Mr Shein, I've never met anybody else from the sanctuary. Hopefully we find out tomorrow, before we go hunt. We HAVE to hunt, Alex. Believe me, I'm not looking forward to putting on the skin and crawling around the forest as a wolf, but we HAVE to. "
He sighed again. "I suppose so. But that's tomorrow. Well... good night. "
They both stood in silence for about a minute, not sure what to say. Alex looked at the floor, as did Hannah. When he looked up, he saw she was looking at him with a thoughtful, almost shy, expression.
"Ummm, Hannah?", he said, hoping to break the silence. "Look, it's weird, and kind of an inappropriate time, with everything that happened tonight, but... look... I just... I mean we... um..."
Hannah cut him off as she leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. He was shocked, almost, or perhaps even MORE, than he'd been when she bit him. But he quickly got over it and eagerly returned the kiss. For almost a minute, but what felt longer, the two stood there, their faces against each other, the only sound their quiet breaths and racing hearts.
Finally, they pulled apart and she got onto the couch and pulled the covers over her. "Good night.", she said.
Alex turned and started heading to his room. "Night", he said. But he turned back around and looked over at her. She had already closed her eyes and was breathing softly. For a second he just stood watching her, wondering what she was thinking about as she fell asleep. What she would dream about. DID werewolves dream? Would HE? Only one way to know, he realized, as he turned and headed to his small room.
In just a few minutes he'd climbed into bed and pulled the covers over his head. As he drifted off he thought about everything that had happened tonight: the bite. The ghost wolf. The werewolf skin. HIS werewolf skin. Hannah. Her family. That kiss. Going to the sanctuary in the morning. So many things...
Next second he had drifted off into a deep, and mercifully untroubled, sleep, not knowing the weirdness and horrors the morning-and night-would bring.
End of chapter 1
Hope ya'll liked it. If you thought THIS was crazy, wait till you see what's in store next chapter and beyond!! As I stated before, this story will cross with others, including the other infamous Goosebumps story, Werewolf Of Fever Swamp, and possibly others: Hannah mentioned vampires. Does that mean we might meet Count Nightwing, or other members of his family? Who knows? Read on, my friends!! But we WILL meet some nasty groups, like monster hunters looking to kill our creatures of the night, and some not-so-friendly werewolves and vampires. They can't all be good. And as I said before, we WILL have a sex scene with Alex and Hannah soon.
Oh, and if you're wondering if Dumb and Dumber, aka Sean and Arjun, will appear, don't worry: our heroes aren't done scaring them yet!!!
Anyway, see ya'll soon in chapter 2!! In the meantime, be sure to like and review. And don't be shy to message me!! I always welcome conversations!!!
