Late September 1994

An experimental pollen and spore monitoring station outside the town of Izumo is going through a normal routine of testing and configuring its equipment. It is late night and two scientists are working overtime. One scientist just switched on the device that has an odd-looking camera overlooking the town.

"Alright. Calibration complete and the device is starting up. Hopefully this time the sensor on the camera is able to pick up some wildlife data from the bottom of this hill."

Another scientist walks up to him with a coffee mug on his hand.

"I hope so too. I want to get back soon and see my wife. She probably is going to give me an earful when she wakes up in the morning."

"Hahaha…I feel bad for you."

"Heh. Don't be. Let's just get this done so we can pack up and go home."

The experimental device has finished its startup and began to scan and collect pollen and spore data based on where the camera is looking at. Everything looked normal for a few minutes, until the camera pans into the view of this mysterious looking giant tree.

"Hey, come here and take a look. Are these readings correct?"

The scientist leans forward to the monitor and noticed the data collected was way off the chart. He puts down his coffee mug on the table beside him.

"What the hell? A single tree spouting out lots of spores? This doesn't make any sense."

"These readings are insane. It just kept chugging out more and more spores. This is very concerning. Especially those spores are heading to the town. What should we do?"

"Contact the National Institute of Infectious Diseases ASAP! Something tells me this is no regular phenomenon."

The spores heading to the quiet town of Izumo relatively fast partially thanks to the wind. A rude awakening will befall on the residences soon.
