When Jaune awoke the next morning, it quickly became apparent to him that aside from Nora, he was the only one who was fine getting up so early. Ruby was still snoring away and Blake wasn't much better. It was admittedly cute seeing them sleep like that, and maybe a little creepy if one noticed him staring from an outside perspective, but he was just glad to finally take a breather of sorts. He was at Beacon Academy. He had a team. He could afford to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Still, he had an example to set. He was a leader and if he learned anything from Atalante's memories. It was how to be a good one. In short, he just had to not be Jason.
"Ruby," he said as he approached her bed - which was a top bunk so he had to climb a bit - and shook her shoulder. "It's time to wake up. You've slept through like, two alarms."
She mumbled a bit but didn't seem to be waking up, which caused his right eye to twitch. He was having flashbacks to his life at home right now and none of them were good. He steeled himself and prepared the strongest 'dad voice' he could muster. "Ruby Rose! If you don't get your finely sized ass up at this moment, I'm going to throw Crescent Rose out the window!"
He barely avoided a punch from her as her eyes snapped open and she glared at him like a cat that had been cornered. Which was ironic because the actual cat was sleeping across the room.
"Don't touch my baby!" she hissed.
He allowed himself to fall and landed on the floor, glancing up at her with a wry smile. "There, was that so hard?"
She glared at him before her expression softened, obviously realizing he'd been kidding. "Couldn't you have used a gentler trick? Like promising me cookies?"
He crossed his arms, one eyebrow raising ever so slightly. "When that excuse worked so well? Not on your life. Now get dressed. We got morning training."
She gave him one last stink eye before hopping out of bed and zipping to the bathroom with a burst of rose petals.
Petals that were now blanketing the room.
"And make sure you clean up your damn semblance!"
"Wow, our Fearless Leader can really be stern when he needs to be," Nora said with a grin, having already gotten dressed nearly an hour ago.
He flicked his gaze to her. "I haven't had my morning coffee yet."
She stared at him and snorted. "You're not a morning person either, are you?"
"Don't have a choice in the matter now. Wake up Blake, will you? I'll meet you all outside."
"First order of business," Jaune said as he stared at his now-ready team. "Stamina and aura training. Training that will mostly benefit our two speed-types, Ruby and Blake."
Ruby perked up slightly at being addressed and Blake looked interested.
"You two have far weaker aura levels than Nora and I. So you're going to train to increase it. From what I learned, Aura is like a muscle. And the only way to make a muscle stronger is by training it. The method is simple."
He installed his Archer card while Nora hefted her hammer.
"We're going to come at you with everything we got. Try not to die."
Ruby let out an 'eep' while shakily holding up Crescent Rose while Blake looked like she'd rather be anywhere but here.
Jaune smirked. Clearly, the Atalante part of him was having just a tad too much fun.
Three hours of brutal training later and it was almost time for their first class. They'd all had time to take a shower and get changed into their school uniforms. Though Ruby and Blake looked like they were ready to keel over any moment.
"You're a monster," Blake muttered. "A slave driving monster."
Jaune rubbed the back of his head. "I'm not a good teacher. So brute force was the only method I really knew."
"I can't feel my everything," Ruby whined as she used the wall as a support to walk.
"Oh, suck it up you sissy!" Nora said as she slapped Ruby on the back, nearly causing her to fall over. "My usual morning routine is ten times that intense!"
"That's because you're not human, Nora" Blake said as she rubbed her head. "In fact, I don't know what you are. Probably a force of chaotic energy."
"Nah, that'd be me."
All four of them stopped as they turned as one to address the source of the voice.
Zelretch stood there, hand on his cane and a smirk on his lips.
"Hello, boy. Making decent strides, I see."
Jaune grimaced. "Ladies. This is Zelretch. Zelretch, this is my team."
Ruby's eyes grew three times as wide. "Oh my god! You're the Wizard guy that Jaune told us about last night!"
Given the circumstances, he'd come clean about everything to Nora and Ruby as well. They were his teammates after all and he refused to keep secrets from them.
"The very same, young Rose. The very same. Shame about those eyes though."
Ruby blinked. "Huh?"
"Oh. Too soon. Meh. Consider it foreshadowing."
"I knew those were important!" Jaune exclaimed.
Zelretch smirked. "So you caught on!"
Ruby groaned. "What's so important about my eyes?!"
"Stuff that will be important one day. Maybe, perhaps never at all."
"No, no. You aren't getting away that easily!" Ruby shouted, her outburst taking Jaune by surprise. She normally wasn't that forceful, lest you threatened her weapon.
"First Professor Ozpin pointed my eyes out and now you, a Wizard, knows something about them?"
Zelretch' right eyebrow rose. "You actually caught that comment?"
She nodded. "Yeah. Thought it was weird. But I didn't think anything about it until now."
Jaune looked between Ruby and Zelretch. And then over at his other teammates. He should probably do something.
"Alright, alright. Listen. Whatever it is about your eyes, it's something that can't be unveiled right now."
"Actually, it can," Zelretch said as he stroked his beard. "For her to have a vested interest . . . this timeline has certainly become very unique indeed. How fascinating."
"I have the feeling we're watching something epic go down," Nora said off to the side.
"I'm just curious where he bought his suit," Blake mumbled, making Jaune thankful that he wasn't the only one envious of that damn suit.
"I'll tell you what, Rubelia Cassandra Rose," Zelretch said, earning a surprised gasp from Ruby. "If you continue to surprise me with your growth, I'll tell you the secret you desire to know in two month's time. Do we have an accord?"
Jaune was too busy staring at how pale Ruby's face had gotten the moment that Zelretch had spoken what he assumed was Ruby's full name. It was a beautiful name, but did she not like it or something? Is that why she always went by a nickname?
"I agree with your proposal . . . but I also have another thing to say. That name you just used. The only one to ever call me that name," Ruby said, as if knowing what he was thinking, "was my late mother. And the only way you could know it . . . is if you knew her."
Zelretch gave her a wry smile before vanishing in a flash of prismatic light.
"So, Rubelia, huh?" Jaune spoke up, breaking the tense quiet that Zelretch's departure had created. "Nice. I like it."
Ruby rounded on him, eyes wide. "I . . . mrm. Fine. But only you three get to call me that. And only in private, okay?!"
It irked him, seeing Ruby so emotionally distraught. So he decided to fix this the only way he knew how. "I'll buy you some cookies on the way to class."
And just like that, her expression did a 180. She really was easy to please. "Yay~! Cookie time!"
The first class of the day. Professor Port's class. And one that Jaune would rather not be in. The man could tell a fine story, but he was so arrogant about himself that it was like listening to the damn King of Heroes. He blinked. Where did that rogue thought come from?
He shook his head. The mundanity of the class must be getting to him. He gazed over at Ruby, who was currently fast asleep. He didn't blame her. Blake was trying to paying attention, but having trouble staying awake. And Nora? Nora was doodling.
He didn't judge any of them. But someone clearly did. He could feel Weiss' glare drilling a hole into the back of his head.
So he did something that the Jaune from a few days ago would only dream of doing. He turned around, rested his arm on her desk and gazed into her eyes. "Can I help you, Elsa?"
Oh man, if looks could kill, he'd have been lit on fire by now. Or perhaps frozen solid.
"Your team is a mockery to the students of this academy!" she hissed at him.
His eyebrow rose. "What right do you have to judge my team? You're not on it."
"Even so, it sets a bad precedent!"
"That so? View must be nice from that glass house of yours."
"What?! How dare-"
Professor Port cleared his throat. "Now then! Which of you believe you have what it takes to be a true Huntsman or Huntress?"
Noticing Weiss about to volunteer, Jaune beat her to it. "I do, Professor."
He gazed at Weiss as he said this and allowed a smirk to cross his face. "Just watch. I'll show you what the leader of this 'bad precedent' can do."
'You've gotten quite bold' Atalante observed.
It's because I have something to fight for. When it was just me, I was practically running around like a headless chicken. But I've got friends now. A team that depends on me. I cannot. No, I will not let them down!
'Heh. You truly would have been a better leader than Jason.'
Atalante. You and I both know that's a very, very low bar.
' . . . Okay, that's fair.'
He allowed him to refocus on the present. He was to fight this pig boar Grimm thing. It had a name, but he couldn't really remember it. Sure, Port had said it. Like, five times. But he was talking with a voice in his head, so he couldn't really be bothered to pay attention.
'Boarbatusk' Atalante helpfully supplied.
Right. That. That was indeed the thing it was named. Either way, it was time to show everyone what the leader of Team ABRN could do.
He drew Crocea Mors and gazed across the small classroom floor at his moment. By this point, Ruby had woken up from all the excitement and was cheering for him.
"Go, Jaune! Kick his butt!"
He smirked as he allowed the combat experience he'd gained from Atalante bring him clarity. Atalante may not have ever used his sword, but as he sunk deeper and deeper into her memories due to their stronger connection, he recalled many a fighter who did. Including one from a certain Grail War that was said to be the strongest of all.
He slowly lowered his stance and moved his sword into a different position. He was mimicking that swordsman. That warrior. But as he did so, his stance began to change to something else entirely. It was if something was interfering.
'T-This is!'
'Stand aside, Archer. It's time for him to become a true hero!'
It was a new voice. One that Jaune didn't recognize. And yet, it filled him with courage and confidence. His voice said the words unprompted.
"Install - Saber!"
The room was suddenly awash in a multitude of colors as Jaune's visage began to change. His armor became more streamlined as his hair became spikier. The color changed as well, from blond to a mixture of black and white. His bright blue eyes became darker and more focused. A white cape with blue lining formed around his neck as the light show died down. Crocea Mors now lay on the floor, a brand new blade in his right hand. One that seemed to radiate a light that caused the Grimm facing it to step back in terror.
Jaune smirked at the beast. "I don't know why I was ever afraid of you. You're just a blot of darkness. A stain upon this land."
He pointed his blade - His Joyeuse - at it. "But fret not. You will fall now, by the hand of the King of the Franks, Charlemagne!"
The sync rate was far stronger than it had ever been with Atalante. Charlemagne truly admired Jaune's goals and had no issues trusting him completely.
But this came with a side effect. That being that the full might of Charlemagne was coursing through Jaune's body. Such a transformation would cause horrific damage if he didn't end this soon.
He hefted his blade, well aware that everyone in the room had gone eerily silent, even Ruby.
He stepped forward and in an instant, he had already reached his opponent. He sheathed his blade and then clicked his tongue.
"Too much power."
The Boarbatusk was bisected horizontally . . . along with the wall behind it. The structure came crashing down with a large thud. And then Jaune's eyes widened as he noticed that the tree outside had been cut in two as well. Along with a boulder behind it.
"Way too much power."
He turned around and was instantly rushed by the students in the classroom.
Something told him that the 'Minor' part of 'Minor Celebrity' no longer applied.
After the bombastic ending to that class, Jaune's team helped him to the infirmary, because he had collapsed the moment he'd deactivated his Saber card. He already made a vow to only use that in absolutely dire circumstances, at least until his body could handle the strain better. Even so, it came with some benefits. Such as the fact that he knew how to wield a sword as well as Charlemagne now. In fact, it'd felt like he'd studied the art of swordplay his entire life. He also had far more combat experience to tap into. He was just fortunate enough that both his servants were kind and didn't decide to overpower him.
Both times he installed only because he felt that it'd be okay. That it wouldn't be a danger. At least mentally in the case of the second.
He sat in the Nurse's office now, bored out of his mind. But at least he wasn't alone, Blake had decided to keep him company.
"You really are a cheater," she said with an amused tone as she read a book next to his bedside. "Though at least you have a clear limit."
"Meh. Just wait until I manage to make my aura stronger. Then I can use my Saber card all I want."
"Does that mean I can beat you up next time?"
He stared at her before falling back on his pillow. "Knock yourself out."
She let out a small laugh. "Ruby was really upset that you wouldn't be able to make it to Combat Class, you know. I think she wanted to watch you fight more."
"Well, there's always tomorrow."
"Indeed. Oh and, I have a message to deliver."
"And that is?"
"Weiss wants to fight you in the next combat class. Something about avenging her pride or something."
He lifted his head slightly. "Is there no end to her ego?"
Blake shrugged. "She's a Schnee. She's probably just getting started."
"Fuckin' wonderful," he said with a groan as he let his head fall back again. "That's what I get for showing off."
"Yep. After all, We now have our own 'Invincible Boy.'"
He let out an agonizing scream.
