The Jedi Council Chamber, Jedi Temple.
The Jedi Council sat silently in their seats. Their posture impecable, their faces stoic, and their eyes peircing into the child that stood nervously in the center of the room.
While to those unaware of the Force or trained in it's ways, it may look like a bunch of old and middle aged people staring at the child. In reality, the Jedi were using their connection to the Force to study the child.
The Child in question was a boy of nine standard years from the desert planet of Tatooine. His name was Anakin Skywalker. His face was twisted with caution and curiosity.
"How do you feel boy?" Mace Windu asked. The Jedi Master himself was a man of dark skin and no nonsense demeanor. His voice spoke with stoic curiosity.
"Cold, sir." Anakin murmured. A simple answered that revealed his thoughts to the Jedi.
"Your thoughts dwell on your mother." Ki-Adi Mundi said. It was not a question.
Anakin meekly nodded. "I miss her." His heart ached at the thought of his mother. She was left behind. Forced to continue living the life of a slave. While he was here.
It wasn't fair to him. They should have both left. But Qui-Gon tried to free her but Watto wouldn't budge.
"Afraid, are you?" Yoda asked. Anakin had never seen an alien like Yoda nor heard of one speak in the way he did.
At first Anakin wanted to ask what being afraid had to wirh anything but something stopped him. A feeling in his heart told him to stop. He felt something in back of his head. A gentle touch as if a parent was caressing a child.
Anakin dwelled on the question. Was he afraid? Maybe. But he didn't think afraid was the right word.
Anakin recalled something his mother once said. Something about following his heart or listening to his heart.
In a brief moment, Anakin knew what to say.
"Yes. I am afraid." Anakin courageously admitted.
The Jedi Council was momentarily surprised by th his confession. They expected some bratty child or some whiny kid. Not this strange revelation.
"What do you fear, child?" A jedi master asked. The council was suspicious now. The force within Anakin shined like a white beacon that could peirce the sky, yet he confesses fear.
Anakin took a deep breath and answered. "I'm afraid of you. All of you." The boy looked around at the Council members. Many tilted their heads in confusion.
"Why?" Windu asked. He had a bad feeling about this.
"Because you are the only reason I'm alive. Mister Qui-Gon saved me because you sent him." Anakin stated.
The Council members all looked at each and began to whisper. All except Yoda and Mace Windu. Windu's bad feeling had been confirmed.
"Can you explain why we are the reason you are, as you say, alive?" Ki-Adi asked. His voice held slight degree of foreboding. This was not the conversation he was expecting. Things were taking an unprecedented turn.
Anakin close his eyes breifly. Whether out of shame or out of fear no one could tell.
The Boy reopened and spoke.
"I've been a slave my whole life. It's the only thing I knew. It's all I have ever done. I've tried to escape in my own way and it never worked out until Mister Qui-Gon came and freed me.
I want to be something great. Something better than a slave. I dreamed of flying away from Tatooine and seeing all the cool worlds that pilots and smugglers always talked about.
I wanted to be a Jedi so that I could be a hero. So that I could do something cool and great. I want to go back one day. To free my mother and others like her.
I want to be free. But I'm afraid of being a slave again."
The Confession rocked the Council chambers. The Council members spoke to each other. Whispering and murmuring. Anakin couldn't understand the chatter.
The voices stopped when the clanking sound of Yoda's staff hit the floor. The Chamber was silence and Yoda stared back at the Boy before him.
"Fear, a powerful enemy, it is. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. Suffering, the Dark Side is." Yoda proclaimed. "Be a slave again, you will not be. Strong in you the Force is."
Yoda's declaration drew the eyes of the council members. Was Yoda about to take on another student or was this some form of comfort the old master was giving the child?
Yoda look to the guards," To the council Chambers, summon Qui-Gon Jin and his Padawn."
Qui-Gon Jin and Obi-Wan Kenobi bowed their heads in respect to the masters before them. Then, Qui-Gon popped the question.
"Will he be trained?"
Mace Windu looked to Yoda. He wanted to say no, but the choice would best be made by Master Yoda.
Yoda took one final look at the Boy then lokked up to Qui-Gon.
"Trained to be a Jedi, he will. My new padawan, Anakin Skywalker will be." Yoda Declared.
The Council reeled back in shock. This was not what they expected. Yoda hasn't had a student since Count Dooku.
"Master Yoda, do you honestly believe this is the right choice?" Mace Asked cautiously.
Yoda stared right into to Windu's face and said "Yes. No claim on boy, the Dark Side will have."
