Later that night, Deidre got on her bike, with Huck in the basket, and rode towards the forest. She stopped at the edge of the forest where Hogarth and Giant waited for Deidre.
Deidre noticed right away that Hogarth was wearing his father's flight helmet, a bomber jacket, green army boots, and holding a Bebe gun with a flashlight tapped to it. Hogarth said in a tough, manly voice,
"How you like my manliness, miss Deidre Franklin? Do ya think I look buff and handsome to you, my lady?" He wiggled his eyebrows and flexed his "buff" muscles, trying to impress the Girl. Deidre couldn't help but blush and giggle uncontrollably.
"Buff and Handsome? I think you just look cute!" Hogarth groaned and stomped his foot.
"Aww, come on! You know I don't like being called cute as a soldier! Cute's not manly!"
"Suck it up, buttercup. That's just what you are, cute, right, Giant?"
Giant started to laugh, too and Deidre dissolved into uncontrollable laughter. Hogarth groaned, embarrassed, but couldn't help that he was blushing heavily and feeling giddy inside. Huck jumped on his leg, wanting to be picked up.
Hogarth then straightened himself and picked up Huck.
"You guys ready to play a game of war? We're hunting invaders form mars!"
"I sure would like to. Let's go, Giant."
Giant picked up Deidre, Hogarth, and Huck, into the start night sky. Hogarth then saluted and commanded, "March!" Giant marched on. Though the ride for the kids and puppy, they enjoyed every bit of it.
"Now this is a thrill ride I'd like to always ride!" Deidre whooped and tilted her head back, feeling the wind rushing through her face and hair. Hogarth conked his BB gun and hollered,
"Aline at eight o'clock! Prepare to eat bullet!" He shot at the "alien", though it wasn't really there.
"Target hit! Giant, shoot down that mother ship! It's coming our way!" Giant said, "Zap. Mother ship!", and pretended to shoot down the giant imaginary alien craft. Deidre joined in and shot at aliens with a imaginary laser gun, making "zzrrr! Zzrr!" sounds. "Took down a fleet of aliens, general Hogarth!"
"Nice job, comrade!"
Huck wanted to play along. He jumped and bit the imaginary foes, growling playfully and yapping at the enemies. He lost his balance and stared to fall, but Giant luckily Caught the little puppy, setting him on his heads, which the Huck was delighted by.
Deidre scolded her spunky puppy.
"Huck, you nearly scared me to death! Don't ever do that again!"
"Aww, come on, Deidre! He just snared down several aliens! He's a good and brave boy, aren't you, Huck?"
Huck yapped excitedly in agreement, tail shaking and eyes shining. Hogarth and Deidre laughed at this, so did Giant. They played invaders from Mars for a while before Hogarth, Deidre, and Huck explored the forest floor, with Giant following behind. It wasn't long before they heard something move in a bush.
"Shh, did you heard that?"Deidre and Hogarth frozed and listened carefully, nervous about what, or who, was making that sounds. Huck stood alert, ears up and listening.
"I hope it's not that cougar again," Hogarth prayed out loud and held Deidre in case they needed to flee. They waited for a few breath holding moments before they jumped when the creature popped out of the bushes. Yet much to their relief, it was just the same fawn they met the day that cougar attacked them. He flicked his tail, staring at them with a happy gleam in his eyes. He seemed glad to see the two kids. Huck looked please to see him and went over to greet the fawn, sniffing him. The fawn sniffed back and licked the top of his head.
"Oh, it's just you, little guy", Deidre said gently. "You're all alone, aren't you without your mother right?" The fawn lowered his ears with sadness at those words. Deidre and Hogarth felt sorry for the little deer, knowing that nobody was there to take care of him.
Giant looked at the fawn fondly and kneeled down to take a better look at him. The deer coward back in fright of the giant robot, seemingly thinking that the giant was going to hurt him.
Hogarth went over to the little deer to comfort him.
"Hey, hey. Don't be scared, boy. This is my friend Giant. He's not going to hurt you. He's a very kind fellow. Go on, he won't bite." Giant slowly reached out his finger.
The fawn reluctantly crept toward the robot's outstretched finger, stepping back a few feet and then moved closer to the finger. He finally touched it with his black nose. After a few moments, the fawn rubbed his head against Giant's finger, more comforted by the huge robot's presence.
"Yeah, there you go. He'll be a good friend to you, Bucky."
"Bucky? That's going to be his name?"
"Yeah, think it's fit him well. Don't you agree, Giant?"
"Bucky". He held his hand flat and Bucky climbed on. He lifted the deer into the air and held him close to his face, gently rubbing his small chest. Bucky seemed pleased by this.
"Bucky's our new friend, Giant. Deidre I think he can't live out here alone. What if that cougar comes back and attack him? I wouldn't want that to happen to him."
"You're right on that one, Hogarth. But who'll take him in? My dad probably won't let me bring a wild animal home."
"My mom won't let me, either. But I'll try my best to convince her. Bucky seemed very tame anyway, and I'm sure Mom would be fine with that."
"Well, I guess Bucky's coming home with you, then. How's that sounds, Bucky? You'd like that?"
Bucky wiggled his tail in grateful agreement.
"I take that as a yes, then. Hey, how about we go over to the junkyard and spend the rest of the time there? I bet Giant's getting hungry, aren't you, buddy."
Giant nodded, his stomach grumbling as if saying yes.
"Let's head over, then. Bucky, you're coming with us." Bucky wagged his tail as if he said,"Yeah, let's go!" Giant picked them up and they headed to Dean's junkyard.
