It doesn't take the two of them long to spot the figure darting across the rooftop, dressed in all black. Clearly, whoever it is isn't up to any good, sneaking around while the rest of them are at the dance. "Who is that?"
"I don't know," Ruby tells Penny, an uneasy feeling swirling in the pit of her stomach. "But I don't think they're here for the dance."
"Oh. I see." Penny's eyes widen even further as she scans the rest of the courtyard for any clues. "Um, Ruby?" she asks uncertainly. "Is it normal for the guards here to be lying down on the job?"
"Um, no, no it's not," Ruby replies, following her friend's gaze. When she spots the unconscious guards, she feels herself tense further. "They must have taken the guards out." They meaning the mysterious figure on the rooftop. It doesn't take a genius to put it together. "They're headed for the tower. We have to stop them!"
Before she's even finished speaking, she's already on the move, in pursuit of this nefarious stranger, before Penny stops her with a hand on her arm. "Ruby, shouldn't we tell someone what's going on?"
Ruby shakes her head. "There's no time, Penny," she insists, tugging her arm free. "Whoever it is, they'll probably be long gone by the time someone shows up to help. It's up to us to stop them. Now, come on!"
It's quick enough to punch in the code to summon her weapons locker, but to text or call someone or run back into the dance for help would take way too long. Ruby eagerly retrieves Crescent Rose from its case, feeling reassured by the weight of her trusty scythe in her hands, before taking off once more to follow whoever is messing around with her school, Penny following closely behind.
They reach the entrance to Beacon Tower just after the intruder slips inside. Ruby hesitates for a moment, exchanging a glance with Penny. As soon as the other girl nods, she pushes the door open and steps inside, her friend right on her heels.
Ready or not, here they come.
