Sam had literally broken the laws of physics to save Jack and he'd just blown her off. Alexander wanted to know why. He caught up to him.
"What's going on, Jack?"
"Nothing."
"No. Something. You just blew Sam off. Do you know what she did for you? She literally broke the laws of physics. Anywhere else and she'd be getting a Noble Prize. She's barely slept or eaten in the last three months, Jack. Doc had to put her on an emergency drip a couple of times. I know you two care about each other, as more then friends. I also know, you aren't doing anything about it. You could if you wanted to, there are ways. But that's no excuse for treating her like that. So why?"
"One hundred days. Yesterday made one hundred days that I'd been here. I thought I'd never see any of you ever again. I excepted it. I didn't want to, but I did. And the day after, here you are. I need a minute to deal."
"And Laira? I noticed her interest. You like her too and since you thought you were stuck here, one thing led to another."
"Also last night."
"Apologize to Sam, okay? She doesn't deserve to be blown off like that. Explain it to her, you know she'll understand. But talk, Jack. Lack of talking causes all kinds of problems. Are you coming back with us?"
"Yes! You're my kid, they're my team. I thought I didn't have a choice but to be stuck here. Now I do. I'm coming home."
"Then clear the air or it'll be much harder to do that."
Whether they talked or not, neither Sam nor Jack ever mentioned it to anyone, but tensions increased when a week later Colonel Jack O'Neill resigned and asked to go back to Edora and Laira. He didn't say goodbye to Alexander and Alexander wondered why. He had a key to Jack's place, so he went over and had a look around. Then he called SG 1 together.
"He didn't say goodbye to me. I think I know why."
"Why?" Daniel asked, curiously. "You're his son, I would have expected him to discuss this with you."
"If he really was leaving, yes."
"You don't think he left for real?" Sam asked.
"I think he's on a mission. One he can't tell us about. I went over to his place. He only took clothes. He didn't take any mementos or pictures. Nothing of Charlie or me or you guys. Everything is still there. Charlie's baseball mitt, pictures, everything. He's coming back. Jack is not a man to leave those things behind. I think the timing of him being trapped on Edora made him the perfect person to carry out whatever needed to be done. We just need to wait. He will come back to us."
"That makes sense." Daniel said.
"And it explains why he didn't say goodbye to you. You would have known. I've yet to meet anyone you can't spot a lie on." Sam said.
"Indeed." Said Teal'C. "We will wait for his return." And with that pronouncement, they all returned to their duties. A day later, the Stargate activated and Jack O'Neill came home, along with a bunch of NID people who had been stealing from Earth's allies, all of whom, were arrested. Colonel Robert Makepeace, of SG 3, was also arrested.
"Oh hey guys, I can explain." Jack said, when he saw them.
"Don't bother." Daniel said. "We figured it out. Or rather Alexander did and once he pointed it out, it was very obvious."
"How was it obvious?"
"You didn't say goodbye to me or take any momentos, Jack. You knew, I'd know if you were lying and you knew I'd check."
"Yeah, I guess we do know each other pretty well by now."
"Make it up to us with a barbeque." Alexander suggested.
"I can do that. So you guys aren't mad at me?"
"We understand orders, Colonel." Sam told him. "Don't worry about it. But steak does sound good."
"I could go for some." Daniel said.
"Indeed."
"I may be from California, but I am most definitely not a vegetarian. Lead me to the meat!"
'It's good to be home."
"It's good to have you back, Dad."
The startled look on Jack's face slowly became a smile.
"Dad. I like that. Haven't heard that in a long time. But not on duty."
"Duh."
Life at Stargate Command was never going to be boring or routine, that was for sure. Especially since the next family problems they had to deal with involved Daniel's grandfather. For once, Alexander couldn't see the problem, namely an invisible Daniel. Fortunately for Daniel, his grandfather could, having experienced the same phenomenon. Daniel connected with his grandfather, only for his grandfather to choose to stay on an alien world, to learn from the aliens and Daniel had to deal with it.
"Look at it this way, Daniel. He has to report everything he learns to the SGC, which means you'll see more of him, then you have in years." Alexander pointed out.
"That's true."
"Sometimes, all you need is a change of perspective."
"You're good at giving people that."
"Everyone should be good at something. Except torture and killing."
"You say the strangest things sometimes, Alexander." Sam said.
"Yeah, things that just seem to pop out of my subconscious. Doesn't bode well for whatever was going on back in my original reality, especially since, I think we were at war against something really bad. Worse than the Goa'uld, bad."
"I do not want to meet whatever you consider to be worse than the Goa'uld." Daniel said. "We have enough nightmares as it is."
Something else all of them could agree on.
