So if you've ever read the Tie-In Comics to BTAS variously known as The Batman Adventures or Gotham Adventures then you might know some of Riddler's misadventures that try to further explore his character in ways they couldn't in the TV Show in one page I managed to find through Google Images when a kidnapped Commissioner Gordon is asking Riddler why he's bothering with the Riddle game Riddler explains his belief he has to earn his freedom to prove he's not crazy...By besting Batman with riddles, he also explains he hates being in Arkham comparing his fellow inmates to animals and asking 'Have you seen Joker eat?' (He says while eating a sandwich not clear how good his table manners are being demonstrated) we see in the TV series Nygma values intelligence above all else and seems to think insanity and stupidity are the same thing this whole adventure has really shaken up the foundations of his beliefs
Well it seemed the Turtles got the attic all to themselves, as Jonathan was sharing the private bedroom with Enna and neither Edward nor Jervis were really in any postion to climb the short ladder, Edward having the the bullet just removed from his glute muscle had collapsed on the sofa, Jervis was too exsausted to climb and was just content to sleep in the armchair having just enough energy to pull the lever that put up the footrest.
Borden Willis...He seemed to just...Vanish...No one saw where he went to...
Edward had been given some serious painkillers by Borden while extracting the bullet, Edward asked Borden how he knew how to operate and the Old Hippie replied "Experience...I've done this sort of thing before." And Edward realized that he had probably partaken in those old Hippie protests and activism back in the 60s and depending on the specifics may have gotten shot at by law enforcement.
Edward said no more but instead mulled on the orange banded Turtle's words...He remembered how he became the Riddler in the first place all because his greedy boss Mockridge called him an idiot to his face, Nygma didn't even care about the money it was all about his pride...And here, it seemed to be even worse some teenager who wasn't even a human being, just some freaky mutated animal in that California 'surfer dude' accent Nygma's blood should be boiling for revenge! And yet he wasn't...Why?
Because the first time Mockridge's claim was a lie, this Turtle was telling the truth and really the Turtle wasn't calling Nygma himself and idiot he merely said his actions were stupid and Nygma realized this time they truly were, he had fallen so much into his Riddle habit he had come to believe so much in his Riddler persona that he tried to play his usual game on people who didn't have Batman's no-kill policy he was lucky he got shot in the safest part of the body to get shot also the people he was matching wits with were scientists, even without the fact of internet on phones now, Riddler was realzing he come to believe so much in his own hype, he believed the only person as smart as himself was Batman and everyone else was blithering idiots! Now he was paying for such monumental hubris!
As he began to doze he began to ask himself if his time in Arkham is what drove his beliefs to such extremes? That in particuraly being around the Joker, being agrivated by him further pushed his belief that the rest of Humanity save for Batman were too stupid to deal with? He rememebered he went into making computer games because he had been the awkward nerdy kid in school and he wanted to do something to make him popular, but one thing led to another and he became increasingly embittered toward the rest of Humanity, surprisingly similar to Jonathan's story but the Riddler and the Scarecrow never really thought much of each other...
Arkham...Thinking about how that was the ultimate humilation to be have to live among 'animals' (My! How using that as an insult may become un-P.C. In the very near future!) and it seemed being agitated by the Joker had seemed to cause him to equte 'insanity' and 'stupidity' in his mind to the point he considered them one and the same thus his anger at being called 'crazy' because it was the same as calling him 'stupid' but with the Old Man who just removed the bullet from him that was all being thrown into question...Edward realized he could make fantastic gadgets and gizmos very unorthodox things but certainly within the realm of human possibility, this man Borden Willis basically found the formula to transform animals into people! And he can't remember how he did it! And Edward reflected in his dreams remembering the writings he read in his youth of 'Mad Artists', 'Mad Geniuses' who were able to create something profound from their unique perspective and in past times it was speculated that really they were a conduit for...Higher Forces...To work through to work miracles...
All to say Nygma felt humbled at last because it had finally hit him, just how little he actually knew like that line in Hamlet 'There are more things in Heaven and on Earth than are dremt of in your philosphy...'
Everyone slept through the day as their adventure had gone through the entire night, they woke up at around 4 PM, at least some of them woke up at 4 PM, Mikey awoke because the rumblings in his stomach wouldn't let him sleep any longer, so he went to the kitchette and began to make bacon and eggs his brothers quickly followed suite and the sounds and smells slowly woke up the three rogues, Jonathan came out and said Enna seemed to still be in deep sleep.
"I'll bring her a little food if she wants it." Jonathan said as he took a seat at the counter "Otherwise I think it's best to let her sleep, as it may have been a rough night for all of us but I think we can all agree it was roughest for her!"
Borden had returned before any of them awoke so they never knew he was gone, he helped Edward up and tied an ice pack and a pillow to his read end.
"You sure you can sit at this time Nygma?" Jonathan asked skeptically
"It may be painful..." Nygma sighed as he eased into a counter chair "...But I'm too weak to stand at the moment, and I can't eat lying down especially not while lying on my stomach..."
Mikey put a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon before Edward and all Edward could say was "Oh that smells good." Before tucking in, the painkillers must have seriously mellowed him out as it never once crossed his mind that the food he was eating had been made by a creature who lived his entire life in the sewers...
Just as everyone was settling into a relaxing breakfast in the evening...The door flew open! Batman had followed their trail and he was NOT pleased!
I'll leave what happens next for next chapter, and this is kind of where I froze in the A Rogue and his Mutant right before Batman confronts the Scarecrow and his Mutant Ward, here because the story makes more sense the scene will be easier to right
