Chapter 1
A Horrible First Day
Most people think being able to have lots of ability and power would be amazing. In reality it's scary, it can get the people you love hurt. Especially if you use that power recklessly or stupidly. I had to learn that the hard way while trying to save the world.
Heya, my name is Orion, and I'm a not so normal fourteen year old boy with green eyes. But when my friend told me he was getting chased by the police, any normal thing that was left about me went over the edge.
It was the start of my ninth grade year, so my Mom, Rachel Stoll, shouted from downstairs for me to get ready for school. I quickly took a shower, brushed my teeth, and slipped on a gray jacket with my plain white collared shirt with khaki shorts, which we were forced to wear. I also combed my light brown hair back so it wasn't as messy. Grabbing my backpack by the strap, I quickly went downstairs. I placed my backpack by the front door, and sat down at the dinner table to eat breakfast. Picking at the pancakes and bacon my mom made, I thought about all of the awful things that could happen at school today.
My Mom looked at me concerningly, "Orion, why aren't you eating your breakfast? You have to leave in a few minutes."
"I don't wanna go to school." I told her. "You know what happened last time."
"All of that was sorted out," Mom stated. "Be grateful that you don't have to do online school again this year and you get to attend the same school, since your CAASPP (The, California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress), was so good."
Back in seventh grade I had this math teacher named Mr.Gray, I couldn't stand him. It seemed as if he made fun of me on purpose. He used to say things like 'even a fourth grader could answer this question' or 'I'm surprised you weren't held back a year yet, truly impressive'.
I wasn't miraculously good at school but I tried to keep my grades up while having to deal with a spirit that lives in my mind called Lucifer. Yeah I know it's pretty weird to have a spirit living in your mind, (I'll try to talk more about him in the future).
Somehow I actually got Lucifer to calm down a little for the first test of the year Mr.Gray was giving the class. When I was finished with it I turned in the paper. It seemed to go by pretty smoothly until Mr.Gray did something I'll never forget, he announced my score to the class. Don't get me wrong I had got a really good score but he accused me of cheating and told me to go to the office. Angry couldn't begin to cover what I was feeling. Reluctantly, I started to go towards the door until Lucifer, the spirit that lives in my mind, told me that I should let him kill the teacher to make him regret what he said. I scolded him saying if he wanted me to go to jail go right ahead. He LAUGHED saying with pleasure taking control of my body, which he could only do if I was sleeping, angry, or allowed him to, and pounced at the teacher with a hunting knife my mom gave me, (I had no idea how he got it, I was sure I left it at home). Mr.Gray got some nasty scars but the cops showed up before anything drastic could happen to him. The cops drove me to their station for me to wait and see what the judge would have planned for me. Long story short, after explaining what happened to the judge, luckily I only had to stay at a Juvenile Detention center for a little over two months.
Finally Mom said, "Sweety if you make it through the school day without any problems, I'll have something for you when you get back."
I really didn't want to go, but I didn't want to make things hard for my mom either. Besides, at least I'll be able to see my friends. "Fine, but you better have something good like a better phone or something"
She laughed, "We'll see if you make it through the year, then we can talk about a new phone."
"But Mooooom I still have a flip phone, can I at least have a rectangle phone, it doesn't matter which kind."
"You'll have to wait, I don't even see why you need to do anything more than call on a phone." Mom told me. "How about we go out for Ice Cream or something, I'll even allow you to bring along your little friends."
"Fine," I said while putting my breakfast plate in the sink. "But you better not do anything embarrassing."
Mom laughed again, "Alright, I'll try to not be embarrassing. Love you, and Have a good day at school."
"Love you too Mom." I said while giving her a hug.
I got my keys from the countertop, put on my shoes, grabbed my backpack, and hurried out the door wondering what would happen if I didn't get through the day.
…
Sitting at the bus bench I watched as the bus got progressively closer with each second passing by. The bus was about 500 feet away picking up a kid, when someone behind me cupped their hands on my mouth.
The person said, "Give me everything you got, and don't try to resist."
Raising my right arm I elbowed my attacker in the gut.
He quickly removed his hands from my face, "Ow, what was that for. Didn't you know it was me?"
I turned to see my best friend since kindergarten, Jason, wearing the usual school approved uniform, he was holding his stomach where I elbowed him, wincing his blue eyes. He hung his head, his sand colored hair in front of his face. I also saw my other friend Lucas beside him laughing. Lucas had the same hair and eye qualities as me, just darker plus his hair was longer, dark green eyes with dark brown hair. He was wearing the same thing as me and Jason
I chuckled, "Of course I knew it was you, I just wanted to elbow you in the stomach."
"I told him not to do it," Lucas shrugged his shoulders, shaking his head. "But he just wouldn't listen."
The bus pulled up, its doors opening.
Lucas walked around the bench, "Com'on Jason you don't wanna be late for the first day of school."
Jason let go of his stomach and walked around the bench, "Fine, but I'll have my revenge Orion Stoll, hear my words."
The bus driver yelled at us, "Hurry up and get on, before I leave you three behind."
We all laughed and ran up the bus steps, and down the seats until we reached the back of the bus. Luckily no one was sitting in them, so me and Jason sat together while Lucas sat alone.
"Have you guys heard of a delinquent joining our school?" Jason asked.
"Let me guess, is it me?" I asked sarcastically.
"Wait, no, I didn't mean-," Jason sighed. "I meant someone named Christopher who got kicked out from countless schools just this year."
"How do you even find out this stuff?" Lucas asked.
"No need to worry about it," Jason told him. "It's just from a disclosed source."
Me and Lucas looked at eachother and shook our heads, when Jason says he found out information from a "disclosed source" it usually means he snuck around school, rummaged through some teachers files and found some information. Or it just means that he was eavesdropping on a few teachers talking, you could never know with him.
The bus came to a stop, and the bus driver told everyone to get off in single file, of course no one listened. They were pushing, shoving and kicking everyone out of the way.
We all just waited until everyone was off the bus so we wouldn't get caught in the stampede. When everyone got off, we decided to let Lucas be the first one of us to get off. I blame Lucas not tying his shoelaces properly for what's about to happen next. He ran down the steps, tripped on his shoelaces and bumped into someone almost knocking them down.
Lucas rubbed the back of his head, "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention."
The guy he bumped into turned around, "You really need to watch where you're going." He pushed Lucas on the ground.
Me and Jason quickly ran to his side.
"Are you okay?" I asked
"Yeah," Lucas said. "My leg hurts a bit but I'm fine."
I turned to Jason, "Stay here, with Lucas."
Getting off the ground I walked over to the guy who pushed Lucas down.
"What's your problem?" I asked him. "Usually when someone says sorry, you don't push the person to the ground!"
"Just go before I push you like I did your friend," He snickered. "Nevermind, I decided I'm gonna do it anyway."
He put his arms forward to push me, I easily dodge him and put my foot in front of his legs to trip him. He fell forward on his face, I was pretty sure I heard something crack.
He got up on his feet, his nose bleeding, he wiped it, "Oh, you're so dead."
He was about to punch me so I got ready to block or dodge. Everyone around started to chant FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT! But when Principal John came outside and grabbed us both by the ear they all went quiet.
The Principal said, "All of you, go to your classes or everyone out here is going to get suspended for being late to class, and instigating this."
All of the kids ran and pushed each other trying to hurry to class. Jason and Lucas stayed behind glancing in our direction but eventually went inside the school.
"You two have a LOT of explaining to do." Principal John scolded us. "I can't believe you two would dare fight on school properties."
He looked at the guy, "You're new here Christopher, so you shouldn't be trying to put any bad attention on yourself." Then he looked at me, "Same to you Orion Stoll after what happened to you two years ago you should also be trying to lay low. You're lucky we even let you stay at the school after that incident." Principal John sighed. "You know what since im a good person i'm going to let it slide, as punishment Mr.Stoll You have to show this new student around, and you have after school detention. But if I hear just one thing about a fight you both are going to get expelled from school. Did I make myself clear?"
Both me and the guy who I assume was Christopher nodded, "Yes sir."
"Good," Principal John said, satisfied, "Now bye
you two both missed the welcome back ceremony
so after breakfast I will let Mr.Stoll guide you
around, for now you two go eat."
He let both of our ears go and we both stared at each other. I didn't see what I did wrong. I shouldn't be getting punished for this. But then again, people with juvenile records don't get treated fairly.
Finally I said, "C'mon Christopher let's go."
When we got to the cafeteria I told Christopher to go get his food and sit somewhere.
Christopher glared at me and said, "If you think that this is over don't worry i'll catch you after school."
I yelled at him, "What did I ever do to you, NOTHING so leave me alone!"
I walked over to where Jason and Lucas were sitting.
Jason asked, "How bad was it? Did you get expelled?"
"It wasn't that bad," I told him. "I only have to go to after school detention and show the new kid around."
"And you don't think that's bad?" Jason screamed. "THAT'S HORRIBLE!"
He screamed so loud everyone went quiet and looked at our table then they went back to talking amongst themselves probably saying that guy over there is dumb.
"Could you be quiet I don't want people to find out what happened, I don't need people saying I'm going to start trouble like the old days.'' I told him.
Jason apologized, "Sorry O didn't know."
I looked at Lucas who had bandages on his ankle, "Are you okay, I'm sorry that happened."
"No, I'm good," Lucas said. "Jason took me to the nurse afterwards."
Then Jason said, "You should be asking me that, I had to go through the boring welcome ceremony without you."
I punched Jason in the arm "Stop pouting Jason Lucas could have got hurt worse than this."
He said "fine fine." and looked at Lucas stupidly, "I am very sorry for taking all of the glory off of you."
He bowed down to Lucas who looked like he was about to die of embarrassment.
I punched Jason in the arm again, "Your childish dude."
Then with a stupid smile he said, "I know I am."
…
When breakfast was over I showed Christopher around even though he didn't even look interested in anything I had to say he was just on his phone texting someone.
I finally told him, "You know we can just leave you don't have to go through this"
He put his phone in his pocket, "I didn't come for your lame tour, I just came to get payback for tripping me."
After he said that, he balled his hand into a fist and punched me in the nose. When that happened everything was a blur. But when it was over Christopher was on the ground bleeding like crazy, kids were all around us screaming, and my knife was in my hand.
Sooooo, what do ya think???? is good? corny? Do I need to re-write this whole chapter again? Im open to most suggestions that you guys might give me and will try to live up to the expectations of them (Look at me sounding so formal), anyways I hope to see you guy's thoughts. Cyaaaaaaa
