"Adam." The teacher called out to him as he collected Makayla. She was swinging from his arm and talking to her bestie of the week and he was doing his best to get in and out without being noticed. If you stood still for too long you often ended up volunteering for something that was dull, boring and extremely painful and it always cost them money. He did wonder out loud, on more than one occasion what exactly the fees they paid actually did.
The recent quiz night they went to wasn't one to remember. Adam amused himself by giving the wrong answers to everything and left Kim explaining he wasn't actually stupid just pretending to be.
He cursed himself for lingering too long as the teacher walked towards him with four boxes and handed them over. "What's this now?"
"It's our cookie fundraiser. Makayla said you'd take four boxes." She tapped the envelope on the lid. "All the instructions are on the lid. The money needs to be returned in two weeks."
"The what now?" He looked confused and checked in with Makayla who was completely oblivious to their conversation and still talking to her friend, who he had never seen before. "Why have we got four and everyone else has two?"
"Makayla insisted. Said her Mom was a cookie monster so she'd love it."
He nodded. "Oh she will, my wallet won't."
Adam tugged on Mack's arm to get her moving. "So four boxes huh?" he eyed her suspiciously. "Your doing?"
"Mom loves cookies."
"Oh I know, I know." He balanced the boxes in one hand and opened the door for her to climb in. "Maybe we can not tell her?"
"Why would we do that?"
"Because I can't afford to buy them all."
"You don't have to buy them all, you sell them. We can go up and down the street and like Aunt Trudy and Uncle Mouch can buy some, and everyone at your work." Makayla was a little blasé about it and it was one thing that they did love about her. Very little fazed her. It was a good marker, if things did faze her they could pick it up early and intervene, all other times she just breezed through. "It'll be easy peasy."
"Easy peasy." He mocked. "Sure, easy for you. You don't need to keep them away from your mother."
Makayla stared out the window for a few moments before Adam asked her about her day and she was happy to rattle off everything she had done. One thing they never had to worry about was not knowing what Mack had learnt at school, she was more than happy to share and she also had a flare for playground gossip. "and Jeremy is having a party and he didn't invite Travis and oh boy, the drama…." She declared theatrically. "… and I don't blame him, Travis doesn't even talk to Jeremy."
"Why not?"
"Because Jeremy is better than him at soccer." She responded. "And I think Travis likes Missy and she likes Jeremy. It's very interesting." It was the dramatic sigh at the end that got Adam. "So… maybe…" she changed the subject. "Maybe we should only take one box of cookies into the house? Can you hide them in your car?"
"Good Plan."
"She really is our cookie monster isn't she?"
Adam laughed. "That she is and that's one reason we love her."
They did leave three boxes in the car and it was wise to do so because the moment Kim walked through the back door she spotted them and reached for the box. It had been a long afternoon and she was starving. Adam had dinner nearly ready but that didn't even register.
"Mack. Mom's home." He called out after Kim had kissed him lightly while she opened the box. All he could do was smile.
As she appeared she stopped and looked at Adam. "You were right." And he just nodded.
"About what?" Kim shoved one cookie in her mouth.
"You would eat the cookies. It's a fun-raiser-er for school. You have to buy them."
"A fund-raiser? Since when?
Adam continued getting ready for dinner, he got the plates and cutlery out and set the table while listening to the highly amusing conversation between his two girls. "We have to sell them to make money for school. There are rules." She loved rules.
"How much? Kim reached into her pocket where she often had a few bills, in case they were needed through the day and handed the five dollars to Makayla. "I'll pay."
"Dad already put the money in the envelope. He said you'd eat them anyway whether you paid or not." Makayla shook her head. "That's why we hid some boxes."
Adam rolled his eyes and cringed a little. She was hopeless at keeping secrets. "Well we were only worried about your beautiful…." Kim shot him a death stare. "….Teeth."
Despite often reminding Kim of how much he loved and appreciated every inch of her body they tried not to talk about it in front of Makayla. Kim had read an article about encouraging body positivity in young girls and Mack had made comments about what other kids said about some of the kids at school so they tried to not make it part of the conversation at home.
Not that it didn't mean she would let it go.
And his head had barely hit the pillow when Kim rolled over, propped herself up on one elbow and waited and Adam relented instantly. "It was Mack's idea to hide them." He dropped her right into it.
"Sure she did."
Adam dug his finger into her ribs playfully. "You forget that we know you, we know your obsession with cookies, I mean you can smell them from a mile off, you can zero in on an errant crumb and remember that one time we left a bag of shopping on the roof of the car which contained the precious cookie cargo and you made me drive back the exact route to find them."
"Oh okay, smart ass."
He grabbed her waist and pulled her flush against his bare chest. "I was just looking after your…. teeth." It took about three seconds for his neck nibbling for Kim to relent and dig her fingers into his hip and the cookies were forgotten.
Until she walked into the District the next morning and saw the Cookie fundraising box on the front desk. Adam had come in early to finish some paperwork while Kim took Mack to school and had obviously asked the Sergeant to allow it. She could imagine him using Makayla to get his way and all he had to say was that it was for Makayla and he could literally do whatever he wanted.
"Don't even think about it." Platt warned her without even looking up from her own work. "Your house husband told me to tell you that you have had enough already."
"He's such a nark."
"And that you can't afford it." Trudy Platt peered at her over the top of her glasses. "He's very whiny today."
Kim laughed and tilted her head slightly. "Today?" She reached for a box of cookies. "Humour me? It'll be worth it."
Trudy shot her one of her all-knowing looks and tapped the envelope with her pen. "Pay up sunshine, let's not rip off the kids."
"Gee Sarg, I don't have any money on me." Kim laughed as she sauntered towards the stairs. "Ask Adam. He loves spending money to make us happy." Trudy snorted loudly and continued with her work. The happy couple persona was slightly less annoying than the angsty can't get their shit together persona but annoying nonetheless.
It was hard to keep a straight face as she walked up the stairs and Adam swung around when he heard the familiar footsteps coming up behind him. "Oh for shit's sake." He moaned when he saw what she had in her hand. "Really?"
She shoved one in her mouth and mumbled. "So delicious." She offered one to Kevin and looked straight at Adam. "Oh and can you make sure you put the money in the envelope."
As they headed out later in the money Trudy kindly reminded him that he owed money for the cookies. "Have you actually sold any?" he asked grumpily as he shoved ten dollars in the envelope.
Without even looking Trudy responded. "Yes, to your house wife."
He rolled his eyes knowing full well that she wasn't even looking at him, but she'd know. She always knew. "To anyone other than that one?"
"No." Trudy replied quickly. "And wipe that look off your face."
At least he saw a box later in the day on Voight's desk and Kevin took a couple home as well. He was sure Trudy would pony up for a few boxes and they did hit up the neighbourhood and managed to sell half of them to someone other than the resident Cookie Monster.
But Adam snatched it when Kim decided to enjoy one in bed. He knew she was doing it deliberately to get a rise out of him but he was tired. "Get out." He snarked.
"Sorry?"
"I said get out. I'm trying to sleep and you munching away through your 4000th cookie is not doing it for me. And….." he continued. "… you are getting crumbs in the bed, so unless those crumbs go somewhere delightful that I can indulge on you need to get out."
"Harsh." Kim smirked. "You really think we are doing a food sex thing…." she smiled shyly "…again."
"Yes again, it was fun last time." He grabbed her hand and took a bite out of the cookie, making sure he sucked on her fingers.
"I thought you were tired."
"If I eat your cookie it will give me energy."
"Ewww…" Kim slapped him playfully on the chest and rolled away in mock disgust. Nothing he really said shocked her, he could be very flirty and often forgot to dial back the crass. Not that Kim was backwards in coming forwards when she wanted something, her language was just more subtle and a little less sailor on leave. "You did not just say that."
He screwed up his nose. "Sorry…. So that's a no."
"I didn't say no, just…. ewww."
The smile on Makayla's face was worth it in the end. She won a book voucher for being the highest fundraiser in her class. It had cost them a hundred dollars, they did manage to sell half of the boxes to some people other than those that lived under their roof.
They'd even recovered from the admonishing they got for eating cookies in bed.
