It was a bright, sunny day.
"Danny," Joey said, "I need to borrow your car today. Mine is in the shop."
Danny sighed.
"Joey, please tell me you're not revisiting his grave."
"Who's grave," Five-year-old Stephanie asked coming into the kitchen.
"Um… your mom's grave," Joey said.
"Liar, liar pants on fire," Stephanie replied putting her hands on her hips, "Daddy said his grave, and mommy was a girl, not a boy."
"Listen," Danny said, changing the subject, "He's dead."
"I know he's dead," Joey replied, rolling his eyes, "But he was my son-"
"You had a son," Stephanie asked.
"Well sort of," Joey said kneeling down to Stephanie's level, "Technically he was my wife's son-"
"You had a wife!"
"Yes," Joey said, "I married my childhood sweetheart. Before we met, she had a son named Joshua… or Josh as everyone called him."
"He must have been special," Stephanie said.
Joey smiled.
"He was," he replied, "You girls remind me of him. He's had DJ's spunkiness. He was as sweet as you are and he was as cute as Michelle."
"So… how did he die," Stephanie asked.
Tears came to Joey's eyes.
"He… was killed," he said gently, "But I can't talk about how."
"I'm sorry Joey," Stephanie said, "I know I can't replace your son but you can think of me like a daughter."
Joey hugged Stephanie.
"Sweetie," she said, "You already are my little girl in my heart. I love you."
"I love you too Joey," Stephanie said, "Do you love me as much as you loved your son?"
"Of course," Joey replied.
Danny smiled.
"Just remember," he said, "You're my little girl first."
He tossed Joey the keys to his car.
"Thanks, Danny," Joey said.
Just then Michelle started crying.
"Can I get her dad," Stephanie asked.
"Yeah okay," Danny said, "Just bring her straight here."
Stephanie happily skipped out of the den and into the living room. She brought Michelle in to Danny.
"Good job Stephanie," Danny said smiling.
"Thanks," Stephanie said, "I'm going to reward myself with some ice cream."
Danny laughed.
"Okay," he said, "But just one."
Stephanie nodded and took an ice cream from the refrigerator.
