Episode 6

(In the laboratory of Maxtible's house, one of the new Daleks is carrying the Princess around the room, while the Doctor, Jamie and Maxtible watch in astonishment.)

DOCTOR: It's playing a game.

PRINCESS: (To other Daleks) Come on, you can join in too!

(As the Dalek carrying the Princess goes past, the other two Daleks join in, following them in the circuit around the laboratory.)

DOCTOR: They're all joining in now!

PRINCESS: Wheee! Come on, Doctor, this game's fun!

(As the train of Daleks goes by, with the Princess at the front, the Doctor climbs aboard the last Dalek from behind, holding on as they continue going around and around the laboratory. Finding a space, Maxtible crosses over to join Jamie, as the two watch the Doctor, Princess and Daleks.)

MAXTIBLE: A rather amusing little game, don't you think, Jamie?

(Jamie's not sure what to think, as the Doctor and Princess play and laugh with the new Daleks. The Doctor even pulls out a whistle, adding to the train game as he blows it merrily.)

DOCTOR: We've done it! Maxtible, they've got the human factor. We've done it!

PRINCESS: Choo, Choo!

DALEKS: Choo. Choo. Choo. Choo.

PRINCESS: They're learning to speak!

DOCTOR: That's right. The train goes, 'Choo, choo.'

DALEKS: Trains. Trains. Trains.

PRINCESS: That's right, we're playing trains!

(The Daleks then come to a stop, before starting to spin on the spot.)

DOCTOR: Oh, now what is it?

PRINCESS: It's roundabouts, Doctor! Wheee!

DOCTOR: Oh, I'm getting dizzy!

PRINCESS: Faster! Faster!

DALEKS: Faster. Faster.

(The Daleks begin spinning around faster and faster, making the Doctor and Princess dizzy.)

DOCTOR: Oh, no. Ah!

(The Doctor loses his grip and falls off, unable to keep his balance as he stumbles into the table. The Princess shrieks with laughter as she jumps from the Dalek she's on, although she manages to stay on her feet – thanks to Jamie who catches her before she falls on her wonky legs.)

PRINCESS: Oh, thank you, Jamie. Oh, that was fun.

DOCTOR: Oh, my head. Oh, so dizzy.

DALEKS: Dizzy. Dizzy. Dizzy, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Princess, do you hear that? They've got a sense of humour!

MAXTIBLE: I'm glad you are so easily amused.

PRINCESS: (Giggling) They're adorable!

MAXTIBLE: Well, I congratulate you both. They are almost human.

DOCTOR: Oh, no. They're something completely new!

MAXTIBLE: In any case, I will now leave you to your little games.

(Maxtible exits the laboratory, the new Daleks watch him go before they begin looking around the laboratory with childlike interest.)

JAMIE: How old are they now, Doctor, mentally?

DOCTOR: Oh, they're just young children, but they'll grow up very fast. Within a matter of hours. Now, come here, all of you. Come along, gather round. Come here.

(The Daleks continue to look around the room.)

JAMIE: They seem to be ignoring you.

DOCTOR: So they are.

PRINCESS: That's because you didn't do it right, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Oh? How should I have done it?

PRINCESS: Like this. (Singing) Gather round, everybody, gather round. It's time to gather round, gather round.

(Hearing the singing, the new Daleks immediately come over, surrounding the time travellers with intrigue.)

JAMIE: How'd you know to do that, Princess?

PRINCESS: (Giggling) Children love singing, it's well known.

DALEK: Who is this?

(The Daleks are all looking at Jamie. While they are doing this, the Doctor takes a pen from his pocket and begins drawing symbols on the lower casing of each of the three Daleks.)

PRINCESS: This is Jamie, one of our best friends.

DALEK: Best friend. Hello, best friend.

PRINCESS: No, silly. His name's, 'Jamie,' and he's a friend to you, just like with me and the Doctor. We're all your friends. But maybe we'll all be best friends someday too? Oh! Maybe you could all be best friends together!

DALEK: What is a friend?

DOCTOR: Well, it's somebody who likes you, who wants to help you and share with you.

(The Doctor has finished drawing his symbols.)

DOCTOR: There we are.

DALEK: What have you done?

DOCTOR: I have given you all names.

PRINCESS: Oh, I see! So…you're Alpha. And you're Beta. And you're called Omega.

ALPHA: Alpha.

DOCTOR: Yes, that's right.

BETA: Beta.

DOCTOR: Yes.

OMEGA: Omega.

PRINCESS: Well done!

(The Daleks form a circle and begin to go around and around.)

ALPHA: Alpha.

BETA: Beta.

OMEGA: Omega.

ALPHA: Alpha.

BETA: Beta.

OMEGA: Omega.

PRINCESS: Listen to them, they're singing now!

DALEKS: Singing. Singing. Singing.

PRINCESS: Oh, this is wonderful!

(The Daleks then stop singing and all turn towards the cabinet of mirrors. Alpha looks back to the time travellers.)

ALPHA: We must go now. We are called.

PRINCESS: (Disappointed) Go?

(Omega and Beta head into the cabinet, vanishing.)

DOCTOR: Called? What do you mean? Who called you?

PRINCESS: And where are you going?

ALPHA: All Daleks are ordered to return to Skaro.

DOCTOR: Return to Skaro? But that's the Dalek planet–

(Alpha puts its sucker on the Doctor's chest.)

ALPHA: Friend.

(Alpha then does the same with the Princess.)

ALPHA: Friend.

(And then with Jamie.)

ALPHA: Friend. Goodbye, friends.

(Alpha then goes through the cabinet, just like Beta and Omega.)

JAMIE: But if the Daleks are returning to Skaro… Where's Victoria?!

PRINCESS: You're right. Surely they wouldn't take her to Skaro, would they?

DOCTOR: No, she must still be in this house somewhere. Come on. We'll try upstairs.

(The time travellers run over to the spiral staircase in the corn, ascending the stairs as quickly as they can.)

(Having searched the house, the Doctor, Princess and Jamie are now making their way back to the laboratory through the hallway.)

JAMIE: We've looked everywhere, and we still can't find her.

PRINCESS: Don't worry, Jamie. We'll find her. We just might have to… What's that noise?

(They all listen and hear some kind of beeping.)

DOCTOR: It's coming from the lab. Quick!

(The Doctor, Princess and Jamie burst into the laboratory, finding Waterfield on the floor besides some beeping machine.)

DOCTOR: Waterfield, what's happened to you?

(The Doctor, Princess and Jamie rush over to Waterfield, gathering around him and the machine on the floor.)

PRINCESS: Are you all right?

WATERFIELD: Doctor…Princess… Daleks…going to destroy…house. Can't…turn it off.

(The Doctor quickly examines the beeping machine, as Waterfield passes out.)

PRINCESS: Edward? Edward?

JAMIE: What's happened to him?

PRINCESS: He's passed out. What is that thing, Doctor?

DOCTOR: A bomb I should think. And it's got a time switch!

JAMIE: Well, if you can't turn it off, surely–

DOCTOR: No, wait a minute. Eighty-nine, eighty-eight, eighty-seven. Just about a minute, that's all we've got.

JAMIE: Well, toss it out the window then!

DOCTOR: This isn't a firework! We'd have to toss this half a mile. We'll have to follow the Daleks to Skaro. Princess, get the doors opens. Jamie, help me with Waterfield.

(While the Princess rushes over to the cabinet of mirrors, the Doctor and Jamie lift Waterfield to his feet. The Princess tries the doors to the cabinet, but they don't open.)

PRINCESS: They've locked the doors!

JAMIE: Let me try.

(The Doctor manages to hold Waterfield on his own, as Jamie tries to open the doors to the cabinet but to no avail.)

JAMIE: They won't budge! We're trapped.

PRINCESS: No. No, wait a minute.

(The Princess puts her hand to the cabinet and closes her eyes.)

JAMIE: What are you doing, we don't have time–

DOCTOR: Quiet, Jamie!

(The Princess' other hand then moves pointing to an alcove near the back of the laboratory. The Princess' eyes fly open.)

PRINCESS: There! Jamie, help me!

JAMIE: Help you with what?

(The Princess and Jamie race into the alcove.)

PRINCESS: This.

(The Princess and Jamie have found the time machine from nineteen sixty-six. The one with two metal arms, separated by a few feet, each being held up by a metal stand, and with dull lit controls at the end of each arm.)

PRINCESS: I'll take this, you take that one.

(The Princess starts dragging out one of the arms, while Jamie pulls the other.)

JAMIE: Where are we taking these?

PRINCESS: Right in front of the cabinet. There.

(The Princess and Jamie have successfully moved the time machine in front of the cabinet.)

PRINCESS: Doctor, help me with the controls.

DOCTOR: Jamie, take Waterfield.

(The Doctor passes Waterfield to Jamie, who holds him while the Doctor starts examining the controls at the end of the arms.)

JAMIE: Wait, what about Victoria?

DOCTOR: There's not a lot of power left.

PRINCESS: Don't worry about that.

JAMIE: We cannae leave without her.

DOCTOR: (To Princess) But it wasn't designed to work this way.

PRINCESS: Well, it's going to have to work.

DOCTOR: But we've got no–

PRINCESS: I can follow the time stream back to Skaro and pull us along.

DOCTOR: No, it's too dangerous!

PRINCESS: We've got no choice! Jamie, get over here, quickly!

JAMIE: But Vic–

(Jamie spots a crushed flower on the ground and recognises it as the one Kemel showed him.)

JAMIE: (Quietly) Kemel.

PRINCESS: Jamie, come on!

JAMIE: The Daleks, they've got Victoria and Kemel!

DOCTOR: They must do, we've searched all over the house.

JAMIE: Aye, but–

PRINCESS: Jamie, get over here, now! We're almost out of time!

(Jamie drags Waterfield over so that they are all standing in between the two arms of the time machine.)

DOCTOR: Right, we're ready.

PRINCESS: Hold on.

(The Princess takes hold of one of the arms and holds out her other arm towards the cabinet of mirrors. She presses her eyes shut, cringing with effort, as a golden aura begins to irradiate from around her. The aura then spreads, wrapping itself around the Doctor, an unconscious Waterfield and an astonished Jamie. The Princess begins to tremble, as all four and the time machine begin to fade away, disappearing right as the bomb explodes.)

(Far, far away, on a cold forgotten world, within a white stone forest, a golden light begins to shine. That light grows, taking on shapes. First that of a woman in a top hat, then of three men, before the strange machine they use to travel forms. From there, each fade into existence. The Princess is sweating, in clear pain, but she keeps going. The Doctor watches in concern, but is unable to do anything, while Jamie is simply in awe, as he holds on to Waterfield. Then, finally, they materialise. And the Princess collapses to the ground.)

JAMIE: Princess?!

(The Doctor goes to her quickly, while Jamie awkwardly puts down Waterfield, before joining him.)

JAMIE: What's happened to her, Doctor?

DOCTOR: (To Princess) Can you hear me? Princess? Princess?

(The Princess groans, as the Doctor sighs in relief.)

PRINCESS: (Exhausted) Did…Did it…work?

(The Doctor looks around, at the familiar petrified forest.)

DOCTOR: Oh, yes. It worked all right.

(A groan from Waterfield, who clutches his head.)

JAMIE: Hey, Doctor. Waterfield's waking up to.

DOCTOR: Make sure he's all right, Jamie.

JAMIE: Aye.

(While Jamie goes to check on Waterfield, the Doctor helps the Princess sit up, leaning her against the arm of the time machine.)

DOCTOR: Do you recognise it?

PRINCESS: Yes. This is…This is the spot…isn't it?

DOCTOR: Where we landed the first time we came to Skaro. Back when Susan was with us.

PRINCESS: And Barbara…and Ian… (Distant) It's almost over… The finale end…

DOCTOR: If we're lucky. But we've still got a lot of work to do. Do you think you can stand?

PRINCESS: Let's find out.

(The Doctor helps the Princess up to her feet. She's a little wobbly though and needs to lean on the Doctor.)

PRINCESS: Sorry. That took more out of me than I thought.

DOCTOR: You never should have done something so foolish. You could have torn yourself apart, and worse.

PRINCESS: I…I had no choice.

(The Princess winces in pain sudden, hunching over.)

PRINCESS: I should be thankful it was so crude.

DOCTOR: What was?

PRINCESS: Their time machine. It meant there was only one place to go. Made it easier to get here. Of course, I didn't intend on ending up in this exact spot.

DOCTOR: Perhaps it's due to your own history with this place.

PRINCESS: Maybe.

(Another wince of pain. Meanwhile, Jamie has helped Waterfield up to his feet also.)

JAMIE: How are you feeling, Mr Waterfield?

WATERFIELD: Head's sore.

PRINCESS: You and me both.

DOCTOR: We can rest up ahead. Come along.

JAMIE: What about this machine.

DOCTOR: We don't need it anymore. Come on.

(With the Doctor supporting the Princess, and Jamie supporting Waterfield, the group walk through the forest, until they reach a familiar cliff edge. One which overlooks a Dalek city.)

JAMIE: What's that?

DOCTOR: The Dalek city.

(A groan from the Princess reminds the Doctor of his priorities. The Doctor sets the Princess down and Jamie does the same, putting Waterfield next to her.)

DOCTOR: There, you both catch your breath.

JAMIE: I'll see if I can find some fresh water.

(Jamie takes off back into the forest.)

DOCTOR: Jamie, no, you won't find any–

PRINCESS: He'll be all right. He just…just needs to be active.

WATERFIELD: What about the Daleks?

DOCTOR: They shouldn't come out this far. And if they do, we'll see them coming. No, for now, we should get some rest.

PRINCESS: All right. (Yawns) But only a little. We've got to…We've got to…

(The Princess quickly drifts off.)

(A little while later, the Princess awakens. Upon waking, she notices the golden aura around her hand. In a fright she sakes it, and the light disperses. She sighs in relief, before realising the Doctor and Waterfield have been watching.)

WATERFIELD: What was that?

DOCTOR: A side effect of us coming here. (To Princess) Are you all right.

PRINCESS: Yes, I'm fine. I'm feeling a lot better. There's just, (Looks to her hand) some lingering effects.

DOCTOR: We shall have to keep an eye on it.

PRINCESS: Has Jamie returned?

DOCTOR: No. I'm beginning to–

(At that moment Jamie comes through the tree line to join them on the cliff edge.)

JAMIE: I've scouted around, but I can't see any water.

PRINCESS: Thank you, Jamie, but I'm feeling better now.

WATERFIELD: As am I.

DOCTOR: Are you sure?

WATERFIELD: Yes.

DOCTOR: Are you fit to walk?

WATERFIELD: Absolutely.

(Waterfield struggles up to his feet, but does manage it on his own. The Princess tries, but slips and is caught by Jamie. Jamie then helps her up to her feet, where she is then able to stand on her own.)

PRINCESS: Thank you.

(The Princess straightens herself and her top hat out.)

DOCTOR: If we're all ready, we'll get going.

JAMIE: You mean we're just going to walk into the city?

DOCTOR: Not exactly, no. We know of another way in. If we go back the way we came, we can find a swamp. That'll lead us to that cliff face behind the city, where we can sneak in undetected.

JAMIE: Have you and the Princess been here before likes?

PRINCESS: A very long time ago, yes.

DOCTOR: You might say we were different people back then. Come on, we've got quite a walk.

(The Doctor sets off determinedly. The Princess and Waterfield follow, though aren't as quick or as confident on their feet. Jamie follows them, ready in case either fall along the way.)

(Sometime later, Jamie, the Doctor, Princess and Waterfield are making their way along a narrow edge on the cliff face, surrounded by thick mist.)

DOCTOR: (Mumbling) When Chesterton described this, I didn't image it being as bad as this.

PRINCESS: It hopefully isn't much further.

JAMIE: Wait.

(Everyone stops.)

DOCTOR: What is it, Jamie?

JAMIE: I thought I…I thought I heard something?

PRINCESS: Like what?

JAMIE: Like a voice? I'm no sure.

WATERFIELD: Might I suggest we keep moving?

JAMIE: Aye, sorry.

PRINCESS: It's all right, Jamie.

(They all start moving again.)

JAMIE: Here, I think it widens up ahead.

DOCTOR: Well, just be careful. Can barely see a thing with this fog.

(Jamie reaches the end of the narrow ledge, finding more solid ground from them to walk on.)

JAMIE: It's safe, come on.

DOCTOR: Jamie, wait.

(The Doctor steps off, before helping the Princess and Waterfield. Once on solid ground, the three quickly catch up to Jamie who has stopped again.)

JAMIE: There, did you hear it?

PRINCESS: The voice?

JAMIE: Aye.

PRINCESS: No, I didn't hear anything.

WATERFIELD: Nor I.

JAMIE: But you must have.

DOCTOR: All right, Jamie, calm down.

JAMIE: But I'm no hearing things!

DOCTOR: Nobody said that you were–

JAMIE: That was a human voice, I tell you.

PRINCESS: Victoria's?

JAMIE: No, no. It was a man's. Maybe Kemel. I know he can't speak, but maybe he can still scream.

(This time everyone hears the high-pitched scream of a woman.)

WATERFIELD: That's Victoria!

JAMIE: I told you! Victoria! Victoria, we're coming!

(Jamie tries to run off but the Doctor grabs him before he can.)

DOCTOR: No, you mustn't!

JAMIE: That was Victoria's voice!

DOCTOR: You can't, you'll go over the edge!

JAMIE: But–

PRINCESS: Jamie, we must move carefully and quietly, otherwise the Daleks will–

DALEK: Doctor.

(Everyone goes still.)

DALEK: Princess.

(From out of the mist emerges a Dalek.)

DALEK: I am your friend.

JAMIE: One of your experiments. For a moment I thought we were done for.

DOCTOR: Then maybe you'll keep your voice down from now on.

PRINCESS: (To Dalek) Which friend are you?

OMEGA: Omega.

PRINCESS: Well, it's nice to see you again.

OMEGA: I have come to lead you.

DOCTOR: Oh, really.

(The Doctor steps towards Omega, before tripping and falling to the ground.)

JAMIE: Careful!

(But it is deliberate, and while on the ground, the Doctor looks at the base of Omega's casing, seeing a crudely copied omega symbol.)

DOCTOR: Oh, I'm all right, thank you.

(Jamie and the Princess help the Doctor up to his feet. As they do, the Doctor looks at the Princess and shakes his head.)

DOCTOR: (To Dalek) What was that screaming just now?

DALEK: A prisoner.

DOCTOR: And where are they?

DALEK: Follow me. I will show you.

(The Dalek turns around to lead them along the cliff edge. But the second it does, the Doctor and Princess run around the side of it and push it over the edge into the misty depths below.)

JAMIE: What are you doing?!

DOCTOR: Think I don't know my own mark? That wasn't the real Omega at all.

JAMIE: You mean they made a copy of him.

DOCTOR: I doubt it. More likely they just scratched the same symbol onto another Dalek's case.

PRINCESS: But that means…they have the real Omega.

DOCTOR: Yes…

JAMIE: What will they do to him?

DOCTOR: I don't know. But just because they have one, doesn't mean they have the others. There's still a chance.

(The Doctor puts a hopeful hand on the Princess' shoulder to comfort her. She smiles at him, but is still anxious about their new friends.)

WATERFIELD: Either way, they still have my daughter.

DOCTOR: Yes.

JAMIE: Not for much longer, if we have anything to say.

(The party continue on along the cliff edge, almost within the Dalek city now.)

(Nearing the end of the cliff edge, the group reach a building that is built into the side of the cliff. There is just enough room for each of them to slide through and into the building. Now inside on the rock face above, below them is a corridor. The Doctor lowers himself first, making sure it's clear of Daleks, then drops down. After him, is Jamie, then the Princess and finally Waterfield. Now in the corridor, all four crouch as they move about. As they do, they are forced to take specific turns in order to avoid Dalek patrols. As a result, it's not long before they come to the end of a corridor, which leads into a large ominous chamber.)

DOCTOR: No. No, I don't like the look of this. Back the way we came.

PRINCESS: But this is where we're supposed to be.

(They all look to the Princess.)

DOCTOR: What do you mean?

BLACK DALEK: Proceed into the chamber.

(The group turn around, finding their way back blocked by a black Dalek and two normal Daleks. With no choice, the group enter the chamber, finding that there are Daleks all around them in the shadows. The four are made to line up, with the Black Dalek behind them and the other two Daleks flanking them. They all look up into the darkness, sensing something looming over them. And as it speaks, voice booming all around, the lights on its head flash.)

EMPEROR: Doctor. Princess.

(Light slowly fills the chamber, revealing a monstrously huge Dalek Emperor looming over them. With several tubes connecting it to the chamber around them, while a line of Black Daleks stand in front of it.)

JAMIE: Look at the size of that thing…

EMPEROR: So, you are the Doctor, and the Princess.

DOCTOR: We meet at last. I wondered if we ever would.

PRINCESS: I hoped we never would. But I knew it had to happen.

EMPEROR: The experiment is over.

DOCTOR: Yes, we have implanted the human factor in the three Daleks that you gave us. And as a result, the end of the Daleks is upon you.

EMPEROR: Explain.

DOCTOR: It's very simple. Somewhere in the Dalek race there are three Daleks with the human factor. Gradually, they will come to question, the way all humans question things.

PRINCESS: And when they do, other Daleks will question. They'll evolve into something new, beyond your control!

DOCTOR: You'll have rebellion on your hands!

EMPEROR: No.

PRINCESS: We say you will!

DOCTOR: We've beaten you, and we don't care what you do to us now.

EMPEROR: Silence. The human factor showed us what the Dalek factor was.

(The Doctor and Princess are confused…and worried.)

DOCTOR & PRINCESS: What…?

JAMIE: Well, what does that mean?

EMPEROR: Without knowing, you have shown the Daleks what their own strength is.

WATERFIELD: While you were doing one thing, they were really making you do another.

PRINCESS: No, but…but I saw… I had…(Quietly) I had a premonition…

EMPEROR: The human factor is useless.

DOCTOR: You still have those three Daleks to contend with.

EMPEROR: They will be impregnated with the Dalek factor, your discovery. But your work is not over.

JAMIE: What is the Dalek factor?

DOCTOR: At a guess. It means to obey, to fight, to destroy, to exterminate.

PRINCESS: What do you mean, our work isn't over?

EMPEROR: There is more we can gain from you.

DOCTOR: Explain yourself.

PRINCESS: (Recording) Then…Then I'll share with you my knowledge. Knowledge of our species, our home planet. My heritage and the power that has been bestowed upon me. I can give you my power–

JAMIE: What's going on, who's that?

PRINCESS: No…

(Overhead, a screen shows a different Princess. One from long ago, who is being held prisoner, with her wrists and ankles stuck to the wall by metal clamps. She is older than this Princess, with a wrinkled face and red hair, and dressed in a red and black dress.)

PRINCESS: (Recording) Then…Then I'll share with you my knowledge. Knowledge of our species, our home planet. My heritage and the power that has been bestowed upon me. I can give you my power–

EMPEROR: We will finally collect what you have promised to us.

PRINCESS: No! I never made any such promise! I won't give you anything!

EMPEROR: You will give us all your secrets, and we shall take whatever powers you have.

(Suddenly, an alcove in the chamber lights up, revealing something familiar inside…)

JAMIE: The Tardis!

EMPEROR: And then, you will take the Dalek factor. You will spread it throughout all of time and space!
