Hundreds of miles away, a big, beefy boxer sat alone in a locker room just outside a boxing ring in Las Vegas, wrapping bandages around his hands as the TV in the corner showed the press conference where Gordon Cherry was officially announced as the new ranger.
"Can you believe that?" a newcomer asked, stepping into the room. "We're supposed to trust our safety to some chump who couldn't even finish the guy that smoked his girl."
The boxer finished wrapping his hands. "Maybe you should shut the hell up about things you don't understand," he said. He got to his feet, dwarfing the man that just walked in. "May I help you?"
The man looked a little intimidated for a second and had to take a step back. "Rodrigo Higueras?" he asked.
"I go by Rio," the boxer said.
"Right. Name's Tony. I represent Don Brasi."
"The mobster."
Tony put on a simpering smile. "Businessman. We understand your going up against Helios Green in your next match. Is that correct?"
"Maybe."
"Well, you see, Mr. Brasi has a lot of money riding on Mr. Green's next match. So, he's sent me to make you an offer we hope you won't refuse."
