Chapter 1: Monster Within

Warning: This story contains very dark elements that might be upsetting to some readers. Rape implied, blood, cursing, gore, mental health issues. So on and so forth…

"This all started with screaming, not just today, not just yesterday, but months ago. Or was years? Who knows anymore, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was mostly just screaming now a days. Monsters everywhere these days, Deathclaws, Raiders, Gunners, Robots on the fritz. Take your pick from these commonwealth killers, some of them reveled in the screams of the helpless. Some of them reveled in silent screams as they choked the life out of farmers, settlers, hell sometimes even their own 'comrades'."

"Who were those people? Raiders, a thug with all common issues. Drugs, Jet, Psycho, Med-x take your pick they've had it often while they were killing a so-called friend over that last hit."

"Anger issues, sometimes just someone asking a question would drive a Raider to smash someone's face in with their own hands. Even when that face was nothing but a bloody mess they still wouldn't stop."

"Take your pick from any of these causes for why a Raider does what they do, rarely does a Raider become what they are because they just stopped caring about life, love, friendship, loss…"

"At least that's what I keep telling myself."

A quiet Raider told himself as he sat on his sleeping bag, his dirty hands turning over a sack mask slowly taking in all its details. Burlap, weaved fabric holding it all together. Small cuts in the fabric from bullets that whizzed by his head a few days ago while in a gunfight with another gang. Needless to say, his gang came out on top…

He turned his attention from the cuts that nearly could have taken his life had they only been an inch to the left or right. No dice he told himself as his eyes stopped on the mask, he fully took in the sight before him…

"Blood…" He coolly stated, indeed the spot he was staring at was a small speck of red tucked away in the burlap mesh. You wouldn't even notice this small spot unless you were looking for it… and this man was indeed searching for it as he felt the small droplet hit his mask earlier that day… though it wasn't his blood… no this was an innocent girls… an innocent farmers daughter….

Several Hours Earlier…

"Padre!"

"PADRE!"

"…What?..."

A burlap sack mask covered man casually answered back, his eyes never tearing away from the road before him. To his left a several lightly armored men were dragging their feet as they followed the burlap masked man. To his right two armored covered guard dogs keeping pace with their leader.

"How much further is this damn farm!?" A voice behind him angry screamed. 'More damn screaming…' The masked man thought, but he didn't voice what his brain was thinking. Without bothering to turn around he calmly answered the impatient asshole behind him.

"Less then a mile, you should be able to see the farm any moment now…" His eyes turned to his right as his group passed an old water tower long dried out. The faded letters on it reading 'Concord', his eyes turned forward once again as the asshole behind him smiled though the mask man named 'Padre' couldn't see it he could hear it in his next words.

"Good I got a damn itch… an itch two pretty little daughters can only itch…" His tone was disgusting to Padre, though he didn't voice it as he kept marching forward. He could hear several other men grumbling in agreement as they shared the mouthy Raiders thoughts.

"Told you, we aren't hurting anyone if we don't need to. They pay up the protection fee, and hand over some of the crops they'll go free." Padre reminded the group a few grew quiet at their leader's reminder, though the loudmouth didn't as he chimes back in.

"Come on Padre! Haven't fucked a piece of meat in wee-!" His words were cut off as Padre whipped around in the blink of an eye his right hand lashing out and grabbing the other Raider's throat effectively silencing him. His other hand grabbed the Tire iron axe at his hip ripping it away from the loop on his belt.

"I. SAID. WE. AREN'T. HURTING. ANYONE!" Padre growled out; with some effort he lifted the Raider by the throat off the ground. The axe blade came right between the Raider's legs touching his crotch in a threatening matter.

The rest of the group quickly backed up knowing full well not to step in when Padre gave a direct order. The Raider that was ignoring his leader's order kicked his legs weakly as his eyes darted around to the group almost pleading for help though it didn't come. He could feel darkness quickly closing in around his vision though he could hear Padre still as he spoke once more.

"Do you understand me?" The blade of his weapon dug deeper into the balls of the Raider in the air. The Raider tried to kick harder in vain attempt to escape as his head rapidly twitched up and down understanding his bosses' words.

Without even trying Padre threw the Raider back with one arm, the man collapsed onto the ground cough violently as his hands grabbed his crotch to make sure nothing was bleed. Body thrashing around for a moment as he struggled to collect himself, Padre though didn't care as he turned and kept walking. The group quickly getting back into step with masked man,

"Catch up when your done with your dramatics." He ordered; the man continued to cough this time his hands at his chest as the air painfully returned to his lungs.

The group slowly moved down the hill as they finally reached an old high voltage pylon towering out of a beat-up building. Padre could easily tell the building was built around the pylon for extra support able to easily handle any radstorm that tore through from the south.

"Raiders! Raiders!" An older man screamed from the house; Padre could faintly make out a sun kissed mans face from a hole in the building he could only assume was supposed to be a window. He disappeared from the 'window' moving in the direction of the front of the building.

As his words almost echoed across the barren fields around the building a woman beside a brahmin stuck her head out from the other side of the beast. Her eyes widening in fear, she was older he could tell sun kissed like her husband. At least Padre assumed it was her husband as they looked similar in age…

"Lucy! Mary! Get in the house!" She screamed as she scrambled up, she slipped out from the opening in the brahmin pen dashing for a younger girl who was pulling old weeds from the crops. She wore a checkered brownish shirt, some old jeans and boots. She wasn't as tanned as her parents, but she shared the same chestnut brown short hair the father had.

She too scrambled to her feet as her mother grabbed her bringing her to the house, another girl came around from the side of building hiding behind some boards that stuck out from house. She too had chestnut brown hair though it was much longer than her mother or sisters. It went into a ponytail that possibly went down to her back though Padre couldn't make it out from this distance and from behind the old wood.

The group of Raiders casually walked up the front yard as the man of the house came outside his arms spread in a protective way as most of his family slipped past him into the building. The group stopped about ten feet away from the wooden steps of the building.

It was quiet as the group simply stared at the man on the porch, no one spoke for a few seconds before the man shakily asked "W-What do you want?" As his words left his mouth a few of the men in Padre's group raised their guns in a threatening matter effectively silencing the frightened farmer.

"We're with Ack-Ack… we want a portion of your crops, and 100 caps. You give us these things… and we'll peacefully leave you… you and your… 'Lovely' daughters… wife…" Padre said, when the worlds 'lovely' left his lips, he could see the fear in the mans eyes almost screaming 'NO'. A few of men chuckled darkly at the compliment of lovely, they're eyes almost hungrily devouring the women behind the man.

'Lovely' that words almost made Padre feel sick to his stomach to say, but he knew he needed to scare this man. If he didn't, he'd have to let the dogs off the chains… both human and animal alike. Though he could tell from the chuckles of men they were silently begging to have fun with these women. 3 men for each woman… and they wouldn't stop for anything not even for his orders… or Ack-Acks…

"A-Alright, Alright 100 caps… and half our food… is that enough?..." The man shakily asked, as Padre was about to nod in approval a horse voice behind him screamed out.

"NO! 200 Caps, all your crops… and a taste of the short haired bitch behind you!" He ordered; the farmers eyes would get even wider if that was possible. Several of the men who were closer to the loud-mouthed Raider all screamed in agreement and took a few steps towards the porch.

The farmer quickly backed up to block the doorway with his whole body; he knew this wouldn't stop anything. But he had to try as the men got closer, though they froze as a single gunshot rang out. They whipped around to see Padre with his 10MM pistol in the air, the barrel of the gun smoking slightly from the shot.

"No, Rip shut the fuck up. Half your crops and…" He paused; he needed more money. These men… animals were out for blood they wouldn't settle for less then before. "150 Caps, and we're calling it good." Padre said, the men closer to the porch looked at each other. Larger cut of caps for them? Sounds good, they slowly backed away from the terrified man making their way back to their boss as the last one stepped back into place another voice entered the conversation.

"We ain't gonna give you a single cap scum bag!" A feminine voice cried out; Padre's eyes snapped to the girl who was behind the wood. She now had stepped out fully from behind cover, though she talked a big game he could make out her trembling shoulders.

'She's pretty… brave… like she was…' Padre thought as the pigtailed girl stomped right up to him glaring at his eyes. If looks could kill he thoughts, though he doubted she could really make out his hazel eyes he could feel her gaze burning into his.

She wore a similar checkered shirt to her sister, only she had a ratty skirt on instead of pants. Her dark brown eyes staring right into his, though she couldn't see it he had a smile on his face.

'She's a lot like her…' He thought, though his thoughts were cut of by the father frantically screaming "MARY GET AWAY FROM THEM!" As the girl named Mary turned around to face her father a second gunshot rang out but this one wasn't a warning shot into the air.

This one tore past his shoulder right into the back of the skull of Mary, Padre's eyes widen in shock. Mary wasn't shocked though as her face wasn't readable from the bullet blowing out the front of her face. The blood flew out onto the wooden steps, a small speck of blood flew right at his mask.

"MARY!" The mother screamed along with the only surviving daughter, they tried to get past the father who could only stand there shocked as they struggled against his body. But he was firmly planted in place, Padre whipped around as Mary's body slammed to the ground. His eyes resting on the same loudmouth raider from earlier. His pipe weapon smoking as he stood there with a sickening grin on his face.

"Let that be a lesson to you stupid fuckers!" He lowered his weapon walking past Padre who could only stand there. The man turned the corpse of Mary over, the hole in her face was completely see through. The blood seeping into the earth…

"Nice tits! Shame she was stupid cunt." His hands groped the dead girls left breast giving a hard squeeze, so hard his knuckles were turning white. If she was still alive, she'd probably be screaming in pain, once he released her his hands dove under the now dying red shirt. Padre was sure he was going for a direct feel but instead he grasped a silver locket out from around the girl's neck.

"STOP IT!" The mother screamed in a fit of anguish as tears rolled down her cheeks, the daughter sobbing into her arms. 'Screaming…. more screaming…. Stop screaming…' Screaming echoed in Padre's head as he grabbed his mask in a fit of anger.

"WE'RE. LEAVING. LET THIS BE A WARNING!" Padre screamed this screamed silenced everyone, it was full of primal rage. A level of rage no human being should possess, the Raider on his knees next to Mary's body looked terrified for a moment before he ripped the locket off her body and stood up.

They all began to walk away from the farm as the rest of the family scrambled to Mary's body. The father finally speaking though it was screams of anger… screams of pain… "MARY! GOD NO! NO! WHY?!" Padre took one last look at the family as the father hugged Mary tightly to his body as if to keep her body warm… as if to keep her alive. Her blood soaking into his old coat…

The raider lagging behind ran ahead of the group, his eyes staring right at the locket he was holding up. "Shame, I wanted to make that bitch scream more… right Padre?" He turned to the masked Raider who only glared dagger at him.

"Padre?"

"…Padre?..."

"PADRE!"

Back in the present…

"PADRE!"

A loudmouth Raider screamed his named, as Padre snapped out of earlier memory. His head shaking as if to throw the memory away to not remember it, his eyes now turned to the Raider who killed an innocent…

"Fucks the matter with you?" He said, a silver locket dangling from his neck. 'Mary…' Padre thought. 'Mary.' His vision began to grow dark as he kept his eyes locked on the locket before him. His hands pulling the old sack to his face… 'MARY' his vision now was pitch black as he pulled the mask fully on, his hands searching the darkness for his axe… as his fingertips touched it, he screamed once…. Only once…

"MARY!"

He then lunged at the Raider before him, he couldn't see anything, couldn't hear anything, couldn't smell anything, but he could feel his axe hitting something. And he could taste blood…

..

Annnnnd that is end of my first chapter of Monsters Within and Around. I hope you all enjoyed it; this story has been bouncing around my head for awhile where I wanted to make a Raider whose seeking forgiveness for the things he's done. Seeking to help those around him, seeking to kill monsters. And I've been playing a ton of Fallout 4 Modded, one mod being Another Life - Alternative Start Mod by Xylozi. Where I created a sack mask wearing Raider whose grown tired of the life he's been living and seeks redemption. I named the Raider Padre to show this. His full name is Silas 'Padre' Redding, his goal was to just survive though he finally grew tired of just surviving and killed his group. Which will happen in the next chapter! I hope you all will be there for it!
