2nd shift was in the locker room getting ready for shift. Violet looks at Sylvie as she puts on her shirt.
"So, are you excited about tomorrow?"
Stella looks over at Sylvie as well. She smiles and places a hand on her baby bump.
"Yes we are. In 48 hours, me and Matt finally get to find out what we're having."
Since Sylvie has gotten further along in the pregnancy, she and Boden had talked it over and instead of going to headquarters; Matt wanted her close by so she was now working in the bullpen helping with answering calls and doing paperwork.
Everyone was already in the briefing room when Sylvie walked in. When they saw her, they stopped talking immediately.
Sylvie looks at them and says
"Something going on I don't know about?"
Mouch says "No, everything is fine Sylvie. Here, take a seat."
Mouch moved the chair outward for her and she eased herself into it.
"Thanks." Sylvie said, sighing in relief "ugh I'm starting to feel like a whale."
At that moment, Matt walked into the briefing room and heard Sylvie say that.
Matt walks over to her and kneels down a little and says, "Sylvie no you're not. You're.. beautiful and you're carrying something precious."
After the morning announcements everyone filtered out of the briefing room into the common room for breakfast. It was Cruz's turn to cook and it looked like eggs, bacon, and biscuits.
Mouch grabbed his plate and went to sit down at the table on the other side of Hermann. Capp and Tony sat at the end. Kelly and Stella were in the middle but on the same side of the table. Matt took his usual spot and Sylvie sat next to him and Violet. Gallo and Ritter sat at the round table next to the door to the briefing room.
Everything was going great until about 15 minutes into eating their breakfast.
Speaker from call center; Squad 3
Kelly and his crew got up and sprinted to the app floor to the rig. They hurriedly put on their boots, turnout pants, and their coats.
They hopped in the rig and headed to the location the call center gave them.
After breakfast, Matt headed to his office to do some paperwork. Since Hermann took over his old office after he went to Portland, Matt took the blue room.
Sometime later, Ambo gets called out. Someone had fallen down the basement stairs in their home.
"Let's get you to Med just to be safe."
Violet said to the patient. They nodded and off they went. Once there, the patient got checked out and was very lucky. Only a few bruises and a bad sprain.
Sylvie was so use to running out for a call, when she got further along in the pregnancy she physically had to stop herself from rushing out.
She was in the bullpen by the filing cabinets putting paperwork in the right folders when Truck 81 and Engine 51 gets called out. Sylvie held her breath until the call was about a car wreck.
Matt jogged out of the blue room and spotted Sylvie. She gave him a look that meant be safe and Matt slightly nodded then he continued on to round up his crew and head out.
Things started to slow down a little around lunchtime.
Matt decided he was going to make lunch for them since he hasn't done it in forever. He decided to make chicken perm.
Sylvie walks in and goes straight to the cabinet where she hides her secret stash of candy. She pulled the container down that held the lollipops and opened the lid.
She pulled one out and closed the lid, putting the container back into the cabinet and shutting the door.
Matt watched her as he threw the ingredients together for chicken perm.
She took the wrapping off and threw it away as she put the lollipop into her mouth, she noticed Matt watching her.
"What?"
Matt smiles and shakes his head, "Nothing. It's just since I found out it seems like your sweet tooth is getting bigger."
"Oh yeah?"
Sylvie said, raising a brow and then grinned.
"Maybe I'm just tryin' to be sweet on you.."
She says as she walks away, leaving Matt frozen in place.
"Did Sylvie just flirt with me?"
Once the chicken perm was done, he let everyone who was there know it was done.
They grabbed a plate, sat down, and dug in. They missed his cooking while he was away even though Matt gave Gallo his corn beef recipe.
The rest of the shift was back to back calls that lasted until at least dinner time.
Next Morning
After waiting for Matt to come out of the locker room, they decided to go get some breakfast before the appointment.
They arrive at Med and they walk through the whooshing doors to find Maggie sitting at the nurses station. She looked up from the computer and saw them.
"Hey Sylvie. Matt."
They both smiled at her. Sylvie excitedly told her that they were finally going to find out what they're having.
"That's great." Maggie says, then she looks at Matt. "It's weird. You came back and Will left to be with Natilie in Seattle. Both Halstands are gone now."
Sylvie says, "I know. Just hope Will and Nat get it right this time."
They chat for a few more minutes and then they go sit down until Dr Asher comes.
Matt and Sylvie had been eagerly awaiting this day for weeks. Their hearts raced as they sat in the waiting room of the doctor's office, holding hands and sharing excited glances. The anticipation was almost unbearable as they thought about the life-changing news they were about to receive.
As the nurse called their names, they rose from their seats and followed her into the examination room. Dr. Asher, their obstetrician, greeted them warmly.
"Are you ready to find out the gender of your baby?" Dr. Asher asked, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
Matt and Sylvie exchanged a quick glance, nodding in unison. "Yes, we're more than ready," Matt replied, his voice filled with anticipation.
The doctor performed the ultrasound, carefully gliding the wand over Sylvie's belly. On the monitor, the fuzzy image came into focus, revealing the precious life growing inside her. Matt and Sylvie held their breath, their eyes fixed on the screen.
Dr Asher started to check on the baby and to make sure everything was on schedule.
"Now let's see here.."
She moved the wand to see if she could tell whether it was a boy or a girl.
"Hold on, gotta wait until they move to look."
Minutes went by and finally the baby moved into a position where Dr Asher could see if it was a boy or a girl.
Dr. Asher smiled warmly. "Congratulations," she said, pointing to the screen. "It's a girl."
Tears welled up in Sylvie's eyes as she turned to Matt, her heart overflowing with joy.
"Oh Matt.."
"We're gonna have a daughter Sylvie." Matt said quietly, suddenly coming emotional.
He never thought of himself becoming a girl dad. It'll take him a while to get used to it.
"I know."
"I love you Sylvie."
"I love you too Matt."
Matt grinned from ear to ear and then they kissed softly
Later on, they stopped by Molly's after making sure everyone would be there. Everyone got their drinks and when everyone calmed down, Matt spoke up.
"Everyone, me and Sylvie have an announcement to make."
Matt was standing behind Sylvie and he had his arms wrapped around her with his hands on her stomach, grinning from ear to ear.
Sylvie had her hands covering Matt's forming a shape of a heart, she too was smiling from ear to ear.
Everyone was looking at them. They knew they had gone to the doctors after shift but they hadn't heard anything so they figured they would all find out later at Molly's.
Matt and Sylvie both smiled at each other before looking at everyone.
"It's a girl!"
Their friends swarmed them with hugs and congratulations. The joy was palpable, and the sense of unity among their friends made this moment even more special.
The evening turned into a celebration of new beginnings, filled with laughter, heartfelt toasts, and promises of babysitting duties from their closest friends. Everyone at Molly's was overjoyed for Matt and Sylvie.
After everyone found out, Stella texted the girls in the group chat telling them to meet up later to finish planning the baby shower.
The day after Matt found out he and Sylvie were having a girl, he started to do a secret project. He started building a crib
2 weeks went by and Sylvie was nearing 6 months. Since the only place big enough was Stella and Kelly's loft, Stella decided to host it there.
While they were decorating the place, Matt had a job to do. He had to keep Sylvie busy until it was time to take her over to the loft.
When they pull up to the loft, Sylvie looks over at him. She didn't notice anyones cars parked.
"What are we doing here?"
Matt kills the engine and looks over at her as well.
"Kelly asked me to come over to fix something. Want to come in? Stella's here."
She nods and they both got out and Matt sends a quick text to Kelly saying they're on the way up.
Everyone gets ready for the couple to enter the loft. They soon hear the ding coming from the elevator and Stella turns off the lights since she was closer to the light switch.
When Matt and Sylvie walked through the door, Stella turned on the lights and they all shouted
"SURPRISE!"
Sylvie was taken back. she wasn't expecting this at all. She just thought her and Matt would just buy everything that they needed for their little girl.
"You guys.."
Sylvie had tears in her eyes as she looked around the loft. Everyone was there, including her parents, Scott and Amelia, and Christie. The loft was decorated with pink streamers, a banner that said "It's a girl!" , delicate balloons, and a table laden with treats.
They enjoyed a feast of finger foods and shared stories of their own childhoods and parenting adventures. It was a night filled with laughter, friendship, and a sense of anticipation for the new life that was about to join their world.
When it was time for the gifts, Chloe presented a basket of baby essentials, each item carefully chosen with Sylvie's taste in mind. Olivia gifted a baby journal, encouraging Sylvie to document the precious moments of her child's life.
Before they knew it, the evening drew to a close. Sylvie felt overwhelmed with gratitude for these amazing friends who had come together to celebrate this special moment in her life. She knew that she was not alone in her journey into motherhood.
After getting home and unloading the car, they got ready for bed.
"Tonight was pretty great."
Sylvie says as she is tucked into Matt's side.
"Yes it was."
She looks at him while drawing circles on his chest with a finger.
"Seriously Matt, our daughter will have so much love she won't know what to do with it."
"Just think, in 2 more months we'll be able to hold her for the first time. It's.."
Matt trails off as he suddenly becomes emotional. Yes he's never had any experience with taking care of an infant but he did help with Violet; his niece anytime Christie needed it.
"I think you'll make a great girl dad."
"Really?"
"Mmm."
He kisses her softly
"I love you Sylvie."
"I love you too Matt."
With that, they both fell asleep knowing in just 2 months they'd be welcoming their baby girl into the world.
Next up: Thanksgiving and someone unexpectedly shows up.
