Sorry This chapter may be late, I was busy due to the amount of school work and life. Anyway here is the chapter.
Coruscant, Senate chambers 22 bby
The Senate building itself was filled with people as banter about the war was underway, Palpatine or Darth Sidious as some would know him as was currently listening to a current topic about what starfighter type they would use for the navy, a decision between the Torrent or Headhunter starfighter, with the Torrent winning the most votes despite it being inferior due to some bribes. Sure it may seem good on paper, but in reality it wasn't a good ship, he saw it himself.
Fools he thought, his plan to become leader of the Republic army was already under success and all he had to do was make it seem like the Jedi were fools at leadership and were responsible for many failures while he made himself seem like the perfect leader.
However there has been some rumors for some time within the last few days certain senators pushing for something that those who told him were uncertain about. The question was what were they, and why do some of the officers including the Jedi seem on board? Was it treason, too soon in the Clone Wars?
Hearing the topic ending after a vote to secure a new starfighter has concluded he spoke "Now we have this all settled. Is there anyone here who wishes to discuss anything else before we conclude?" He then noticed Bail Organa rising up in his pod as he began to speak and what was said next stunned him.
"My friends, as we all know in previous ways there was a supreme commander who had military experience. We need a competent strategist to unite our Republic forces against the Separatist and lead the republic army in a united front. I propose that from this senate that we have a change in military leadership to where we can have an actual military leader leading our forces while the chancellor himself leads the senate. However I know for a fact that everyone would just point out their own choices, which is why I propose that in addition to a competent strategist, we also have a set time frame for them to gain success for the Republic. Although there must be a way that there is not high risk involved in proving one to be Supreme Commander." Bail Organa said as he finished his speech, which made most of the senators murmur among themselves for this. Palpatine just sat there in stun silence, did this man just single handedly hijack the leadership of the Republic army?
"I propose." Bail continued after a few seconds, "To put forward a motion to have a Supreme Commander position separate from the Supreme chancellor position as to help relieve the burden of the latter."
"I second the motion." Padme agreed as a few more added on. This was… Not something Palpatine planned for, he knew that if this motion passed he would be counted out as while he is the Chancellor he has no military experience. Waiting to see who else agreed Palpatine stood up, he could turn this around and have someone he appointed like Tarkin lead. Yes that could work, that way Tarkin can report to him and only him, smiling he spoke, "Then, it seems that we have passed the proposal of having a Supreme commander with Military experience. But the question is who can be the one to lead the Republic army?"
That's when people began debating about who would lead. Some shouted for Jan Dodonna, others for Screed, or Adar Tallon. A few of Palpatine's supporters shouted for Tarkin. The debate of who would become Supreme commander began to cover the room as it lasted for some hours. Each person had their details of the four people, however those who proposed the idea were silent the entire time, which made Palpatine nervous. The fact that Garm was there too even though he took the Contemplanys Hermi was more worrying.
That's when he noticed Bail raise his hand in silence after everyone said their part with him suggesting, "Why not let them speak for themselves? Bring our candidates here?"
When he said those words everyone was silenced, then they agreed, including Palpatine, that he can give Tarkin a chance of what to say, "Very well. We shall adjourn this meeting until tomorrow. The senate is dismissed."
Next day.
"With my hope a strong importance on the Navy and using our fighters if a peaceful resolution with the separatist can't be reached. I can assure you that we may be able to win this war." Tallon concluded after going next after Dodonna and Screed. While they had their own speeches and experiences, they sounded as if they weren't willing to take the position. That's good, meaning when Tarkin gose, he will be able to take it without much of a fight from the other three, and that's what Palpatine wanted.
"Thank you Tallon. We now move on to Wilmulf Tarkin from planet Erdariu." Mas Amedda said as Tarkin took to the pod as it floated around.
"Senators of the Republic. The CIS have shown themselves to be treacherous to the extremist extent, they have proven themselves to be traitors to us all, as along with those who sympathize with their cause. Now you know of my reputation, and that of my older cousin Ranulph Tarkin. He dreamed of a strong army that could crush our enemies and paralyzed them all with fear. I promise with the full might of the Republic army as Supreme commander that I will show no mercy to our enemies, to those who may prove themselves to be traitors to the Republic, And to those who would undermine our mission." Tarkin said as he concluded his speech with some voices of objection from the senate as he took a seat with the pod heading back to its spot.
Looking around Palpatine could sense that who knows most would be willing to support Tarkin if given the votes. Good, this won't back fire at him at all, "It seems that we have our candidates if that will be all then i Propose-"
"I believe that there's one more who wishes to speak." Garm Bel Ibilis said as the door behind him opened to reveal someone Palpatine has not seen in almost 14 years. That's when gasps and talks came around as even Tarkin was stunned by who showed up, his name said out loud as one of the senators said, "Cromhill!"
More and more people said his name as if an echo was showing in the chamber as people spoke about him and his reputation long ago. As it all began so quickly it ended with the same speed as the pod began to float and Cromhill began.
"I know many of you may know of me. But to those who don't, my name is Thornril Lucius Cromhill. My story began as a son of a rich noble on Corellia, born to be wealthy and happy, born to be like my family who were rich. However, that life was not for me. One thousand one of my ancestors served in the Mandalorian civil war as a loyal ground soldier and when the Jedi civil war came he still served because he believed in the Republic, believed in hope. When the great galactic war came 300 years later my ancestor of that era served as a member of the Havoc squad who helped defend the planet of Alderaan when the Sith empire invaded that planet. His sons and daughters served as members of other famous republic units in that era. And when the New Sith wars came, my ancestors in that era served too.
Inspired by my ancestors I join in Ranulph Tarkin's attempt to make a military for the Republic, seeing flaws and errors that showed themselves in the Stark hyperspace war. It was there I made a name for myself, helping to coordinate the Jedi, surviving ground troops and all others to end the war there. Afterwards I became a senator for the planet, with the people's backing I helped reduce some of the corruption in the senate. When I was in these same halls, I helped get more funding for judicial forces in the outer rim and helped make humanitarian outposts and networks, purging corruption within my own sector and uncovering many criminal elements in other sectors. It may not have been much; it helped pave the way for others who were inspired by what I did."
Cromhill stopped for a few seconds as he let everyone absorb what he said before continuing.
"Some of you may be wondering why I am telling you all of this. The reason is that these aspects can be combined. will be combined into a cohesive and effective command style against the separatist. I can't promise that our victory will be a quick and decisive one. But I can promise to Bring our army together, Clones, humans, twi'leks, Rodians, all others. Rebuilding the republic army will not be easy. Now the Clone army, while they are excellent fighters as shown at Geonosis and other parts of the galaxy, can't fight the droid army alone. They can't fight the problems on other planets alone, nor can they fly in space and fight on the ground at the same time. There are Republic people, our people who are willing to fight and protect our republic from the harm our enemies sought to bring to us. The Jedi too while they are fighters are defenders of peace, not soldiers. They can't lead large armies while maintaining the requirements of the army forward. They need help and guidance into making sure that their fights have minimal casualties. Our navy while we have new ships needs guidance to become like the shields and swords to protect our homes and attack our enemies fleets. I promise to rebuild our fleets to what they are and what they can be as they were in the past as protectors.
For a thousand of years ago our ancestors fought in wars against the sith United, they were tested and they won. Now in this war, in this hour, we will be tested. I promise to unite us all, I promise to help protect our beliefs, I promise to help protect our people. I promise to help protect our Republic!"
A silence took over the chamber. Palpatine wondered who would speak first and their reaction until Jan spoke up, "I know Cromhill, from the Stark Hyperspace war when he led the army against the pirates. I followed him before, and I will do it again!"
Massive agreements for those on Dodonna side followed him in agreement as Adar spoke, "I second what Dodonna said!"
Palpatine began to keep his emotions of surprise and disappointment in check, he knew if Screed or Tarkin (the latter he doubt would support Cromhill) agree then he would have no choice but to have the senate pass the vote. Looking at Screed the man began to speak, "I may not know the man like all of you do. But I have heard of him, and even admire how use his tactics against the pirates during the Stark war. While I may be a friend of Tarkin, I know that we need a leader who can fight. I join Dodonna and Tallon in supporting Cromhill as candidate."
People who supported the three candidates began to agree with them as they shouted yes. Only people who were silent were those of Tarkin, and the small group who was with him. Palpatine swallowed and collected himself as he stood up and raised his hands to quiet everyone, "It appears that our candidates have been chosen, and what they plan to do. We will now proceed to voting for the position of Supreme commander."
Palpatine nodded as the choice of either Cromhill or Tarkin appeared as he sat back down to wait for the results. A few minutes passed as Mas Amedda looked at the voting results, whatever hope Palpatine had of Tarkin being Supreme Commander vanished as Mas looked at Tarkin with a look that said otherwise.
Mentally cursing himself for not seeing some plot holes, Palpatine got up and with the calm he collected during his training he spoke, "It appears that Thornril Lucius Cromhill, is the Supreme commander of the entire Republic military."
A massive cheer was heard in the chamber as most of the Senate began Chanting Cromhill as the newly elected Supreme Commander just nodded his head in a humble way. He took a quick glance at Palpatine who stared at him, while he himself began to think of how this would affect his grand Sith plan.
1 hour later
Outside the Senate building a massive crowd appeared as they saw a podium was set up and Senate guard along with some Shock troopers were outside in an attention like stance. Cameras were being set up along with holodroids, news reporters, and all sorts were getting ready.
They notice a few Jedi there and some senators, but from what they all saw they were not the main focus. This was what Keet Freely found strange as he sat down with fellow reporter Den dhur as they waited for whatever was going to happen. Speculation was on their mind, was it a speech by Palpatine regarding something good or bad? Whatever it was, it stopped short when Bail organa appeared and after speaking to some people near the podium began to speak.
"Ladies and gentlemen, as you all may have heard there has been an important moment going on in the Senate the last few days regarding an important decision that has been missed out on and has since been fixed. As it is an important rule for the Republic military to have a Supreme commander, we have been working to find ourselves a perfect Candidate for this important post. The result is someone who knows the values of the Republic, a soldier if you will. I present to you all, our newly elected position of this post. Thronril Lucius Cromhill!"
As soon as he said those words, Cromhill appeared as the crowd began to speak in surprise, in excitement or in curiosity of who he was. Many people on the planet including Keet and Den when they were young have heard about the man himself as he took charge of the attempt of the supposed Republic army Ranulph Tarkin made during the Stark Hyperspace war and his many achievements.
Looking at him one could say that his uniform was one of very high regard, as in a sense of the memories of the past as he appeared the same way Old republic officers appeared. It looked like a mixture of the uniforms Republic officers wore in the mandalorian and jedi civil wars with the colors of The Great Galactic war uniform. The blue mixing of the arms and legs mixing with the Orange and yellow color at the chest with a Orange line going down the middle.
Cromhill goes up to the podium and seeing the crowd before him begins to speak, "Citizens of the Republic. Many of you may know me and my deeds for the Republic, but you all may not know the importances of the Supreme Commander position. The position is important as it is someone who leads the Republic military on the Chancellor's behalf, and takes the burden of them, while overseeing all related matters. This position was held by many figures in the past, Jace Malcom, Lord Hoth, And the first one to ever hold this position, Revan."
He paused as he let the people sink this information in. Garm, who was in the crowd, began to remember the history lessons that were taught to him in school about these figures. Revan being well known, seeing this Cromhill continued, "This position is important not only to me, but to all of those who protect this republic. However the question many would ask is who truly represents the republic? There is a true answer to this. One that I value, the people of the republic. You, when I became a soldier I vowed to protect the Republic and its people. I vowed to protect all of you. This is a vow that I myself view with a dedication of the up most seriousness.."
Garm looked at the people, seeing some of them beginning to feel aroused by the speech. He was feeling this speech, this is who he elected.
"The war is something I know many of us did not ask for, but I ask you, have any of us asked for war in the past? There were several times when the Sith Empire threatened our homes, our families. And when the Treaty of Coruscant was forced on us, that was the same year that the Republic nearly fell to the Sith empire, ever since that day the Supreme commander of that time made a vow to protect this planet, this home, the people that live in it, and all other planets from the tyranny of the Sith Empire! I may not have been here when it happened, I may not have been but I can imagine the pain, the feeling of the threat the Sith Empire poses, the same threat that lays at us right now! This position, this vow is one I take with utmost seriousness. The burden may be heavy, the burden may be hard, but that was the same burden all Supreme commanders' carried, the same burden that I will carry."
In the Chancellor's office, Tarkin frowns as he hears this. If he was giving the speech he would have it to where he would tell the people that compassion and words like what this Cromhill was saying would not win the war, but ruthless the same ruthless that his uncle taught him, that his family taught him on Eradiu years ago.
A part of him wondered why his late cousin took Cromhill in, a part of him wondered why this man was so popular despite everything. Tarkin decided to ponder this later as he could hear the crowd begin to cheer as Cromhill began to finish his speech.
"This war will not be easily won, this war will be a difficult one, like the wars before. But we can win this, it can be won if we the Republic stay United! From the Shipyards of Kuat to Rendii. From the farmlands of Ukio to Chandrila. From the Military training planets from Anaxes to Cardia. I know who we are, what we are. We are the Republic United! And this vow I swear that we will fight, to victory or Death! For the Republic!"
A massive cheer broke out throughout the city as the people who heard this cheered. To them all there was someone who could lead the Republic in this war, one who can fight the enemy on behalf of them all. This inspired them more than Palpatine or any others who promise to protect the Republic.
Four hours later, at the shipyards.
Cromhill walks towards his office as he hears another ship landing. Passing by several clone troopers, they salute him saying sir in the process. Walking next to him was a Clone named Thorn. One of his first duties as Supreme commander was to recruit the clone to be his commander before he came here.
Hearing of how the Chancellor kept several commanders like Thorn, Stone and Fox due despite the fact that they were good soldiers and were shock troopers. Cromhill decided rather than have them be wasted as police troopers despite the fact they were Shock troopers, he picked Thorn to transfer and then made him be his second in command as to understand the relationship the clones had.
"Sir I still don't see why you need me, there are other clone commanders out there." Thorn said as they approached his office.
"True, although for you commander according to your records, you carry a Z-6 rotary gun, correct?" Cromhill asked as he saluted two Clone troopers guarding his office.
"…. Yes sir." Thorn resigned as the door open with Cromhill entering first before Thorn. The commander looked around the room, not too big as the Chancellor's office. That's good. What's also good is that there's no big window that can attack the new Supreme commander, ever since he heard about this position and the speech, something told Thorn that this man may change the tide of the war even though it has begun.
Two figures were in the office. Jace Dallion and Adar Tallon. The former when he saw Cromhill he got up and walked towards the man with a good speed he put his hand out for a handshake and greeted Cromhill, "Thronril old friend I knew you take this position."
Shaking Jace's hand Cromhill nodded, "Yes, Jace, Adar Tallon. This is Commander Thorn, my second in command for a new clone legion I'm going to make." Thorn saluted as he stood to attention, to which Adar and Jace did the same. To him this was his first time meeting two naval officers.
Cromhill toke a moment to take this in as he began looking over everything as he looked at what he had, and what he was told by Bail and Garm over the Jedi leading and how limited the Republic army is, "First thing were going to do, is to reevaluate the Republic command structure. Starting with the leadership. Get me everything you have on current generals leading what armies, the possible candidates, ships and vehicles we have. We are going to begin making changes smoothly and at a steady pace. This war has reached the Republic again and we must be ready to meet the test."
And here we have it, chapter 3 for The Supreme Republic commander. And whoa did we see the speech that Cromhill gave. What comes in the next chapter will be time skips reflecting of what Cromhill dose up until the Malevolence arc from certain points of view. Until then may the force be with you always.
