CHAPTER 1- The Invitation
It was a beautiful, sunny day at the campus of the University of New York or NYU. Students came and go from their classes, the library, or chilled in the cafeteria or outside. Two of these individuals were Dayla Fenton and Paulina Sanchez, reading through Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet as part of their performing arts class.
"I think we should do the scene with Juliet and her nurse." Paulina suggested.
"I agree. We'll practice the scene throughout the week and then work on a modern version next week." Dayla agreed.
Paulina nodded, agreeing to Dayla's added idea to their homework plan for their class. At that moment, Dayla's boyfriend Andrew Knight came up to them and sat with them on the grass.
"Hey girls. What's going on?" Andrew asked.
Dayla gave him a kiss on the cheek as Paulina answered, "We're working on an assignment. We have to pick a scene from any of Shakespeare's plays, perform it and then perform a version of it as if it was part of modern times."
"So where's Jeffrey?" Dayla asked.
"Working in one of the labs on his project to try and find aliens." Andrew answered. "He actually got the machine started last week. Before…."
BOOOM!
An explosion was heard from the buildings of the university and out of the labs covered with smoke and two eyebrows missing was Jeffrey, Andrew's roommate.
"Darn it! I almost had it!" He shouted before collapsing to the ground.
Paulina pulled out a small notebook and marked another line as she said, "That marks 23 explosions in total and 21 times he's blown off his eyebrows."
"He reminds me of dad. Now he just needs 277 more explosions to match his record." Dayla commented.
"I thought it was 301 times your dad exploded his inventions?" Paulina asked confused.
Dayla shook her head and explained, "Miscalculation on my part. Jazz has been keeping track throughout the years, ever since that one time he sucked the house into a parallel dimension."
"Yikes." Both Andrew and Paulina commented.
"WOULD DAYLA FENTON AND ANDREW KNIGHT, PLEASE REPORT TO THE DEAN'S OFFICE." An announcement could be heard all across the campus.
A few minutes later, Dayla and Andrew had arrived at the Dean of the university's office but she wasn't alone; sitting in one of the other chairs was Andrew's father's old boss, Commander Terri Miller of the US Navy.
"Captain Miller?" Andrew asked.
Terri smiled and said, "Andrew, it's good to see you again and it's actually Commander now."
She shook hands with Andrew and then Dayla as she said, "It's a pleasure to meet you Dayla Fenton."
"Nice to meet you too." Dayla greeted.
They took their seats and then Terri handed them each an envelope as she explained, "The reason I asked you two here is because I wanted to personally invite you to a gala the US Navy, Army and Airforce is having in a couple of weeks. We hold this every year to raise money for several charities such as children's hospitals, support for families whose members died in service and many others."
Dayla and Andrew opened the invites to see the details of the gala. Terri then continued, "You're both also welcomed to bring along any friends you may wish to bring."
"This is such an honour." Dayla said, but like Andrew she could sense another reason behind the invite.
Andrew decided to voice it out, "It's wonderful you want to invite us to such a formal event but I have to ask; is there another reason for this invite?"
Terri nodded and answered, "I was about to get to that. The second reason for the invite was also in the extremely unlikely event that something supernatural should happen…"
"It wouldn't hurt to have extra precautions." Dayla finished.
"Yes. You don't have to do this Miss Fenton, but either way the invitation still stands." Terri assured her. Ever since ghosts became real to the public around the world, major events such as these have taken extra precautions for the security and safety of people."
"What do you think Dayla?" Andrew asked.
Dayla thought about it for a moment and then said, "I'd say we go and be ready just in case."
Andrew smiled and then agreed, "I'll come as well. If my girlfriend's going, then I'm going."
Terri smiled at them both and said as she shook their hands once more, "I'll see you both then at the gala."
With that, she took her leave. Later that day, Dayla and Andrew told both Paulina and Jeffrey about the gala and asked them both if they would come.
"I can't unfortunately. It's my grandmother's birthday dinner and I have to be there." Jeffrey said.
Dayla and Andrew understood. Paulina however said, "I'll come. It should be fun."
"Looks like I better get a tuxedo." Andrew said.
"And it looks like we're going dress shopping." Paulina said to Dayla, a little excited. "And since we're also on security detail as well, I know just who to go to."
A week before the gala, Paulina and Dayla exited the taxi cab and entered a large building. Everywhere in the place were all sorts of clothes both formal, casual and everything on mannequins and people sewing, designing and everything.
They walked up to the front desk and Paulina said, "We have a four o'clock appointment. Paulina Sanchez and Dayla Fenton."
The secretary looked at her computer screen and checked before saying, "You may enter his office."
As they walked down the hall, Paulina explained, "Tyler Fritton is an old family friend of ours and has always taken care of me when it comes to clothes for events such as these ever since I learned to talk."
Dayla stopped in her tracks and asked in shock, "The Tyler Fritton? As in one of the world's greatest fashion designers and editor/chief of Ombe Magazine?"
"That's the one. He went to college with my mama and they still remained best friends to this day." Paulina answered. "I gave him a call and told him what we needed and he gave me a call yesterday to come in."
They entered the office and sitting at a desk was a man in his mid-forties with curly brown hair, wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and square glasses.
He looked up from his sketchbook and smiled at Paulina. He got up from his desk and gave Paulina a hug as he greeted, "Paulina! How wonderful to see you."
They pulled apart and then Paulina introduced Dayla, "This is my friend who I told you about. Dayla Fenton."
Tyler shook Dayla's hand and then said, "A pleasure to meet one of the famous Phantom Twins."
"Nice to meet you too." Dayla greeted back.
He smiled and then called out to his assistant, "Brittany, it's time to bring them in."
A second later, his assistant Brittany bought in two mannequins that had two very beautiful-looking gowns. The first one was a one-shoulder long evening dress that began as black at the top of it, but at the bottom was purple and at the top part of the one-shoulder had silver sequence. The second dress had a white lace sleeveless top and the skirt like the other one started off as black, but at the bottom was a mixture of dark and light blue.
"As soon as Paulina gave me a call, I immediately got to work." Tyler began to explain. "The purple one is for you Paulina and it comes with a leg holster for an ecto-gun and the blue one is for you Dayla which also comes with a leg holster for any kind of ecto-weapon you need to store."
"They look absolutely stunning." Dayla commented as she looked at both gowns in awe.
"Thanks for making these on such short notice. I know how busy you get at this time of year." Paulina said.
Tyler continued to smile as he said, "It's no trouble at all. You two will be doing me a favour to me anyway. You'll be modelling these two dresses as a preview of what's to come in my next fashion show."
Dayla and Paulina placed their dresses back into the cab and headed back to NYU.
"Hopefully we don't have anything supernatural happen at the gala, but we will have to be on high alert." Dayla said.
Paulina nodded in agreement and added, "I'll be ready. I got the lipstick blaster and mini ecto-gun. Your mum actually sent me one in my shade of lipstick."
Little did Dayla, Paulina or Andrew know, that what they were going to face, wasn't ghostly at all.
