34. Chapter 34 - The Elite Team

Welcome to chapter 34. Wow I didn't expect to get 34 whole chapters in when I started this but at the same time I didn't expect this whole story to be as creative as it has been. Without further ado, it's time to find out who passed the Kohana Tournament!

Chapter 34: The Elite Team

We arrived at Homura's new office nearly half an hour later.

Soji was so furious that she scolded both Asuka and Homura. To me, she looked to be almost twice her size as she yelled. "I can't believe we had to pry the two of you off each other!"

I shrugged, "I've never felt so dirty! You two were touching each other everywhere!"

Asuka's face was very red, "I'm sorry! We kinda forgot you two were there."

"Kinda?" I parroted back with a raised brow. They're… they're the adults in this situation, right?

Homura rubbed the back of her head, laughing awkwardly, "Can we just forget about that and just look at the results of the Kohana Tournament, please?"

Soji cleared her throat and handed Homura the envelope. "I'm gonna go back to the lobby. The woman I left there is probably wondering what's keeping me from coming back now that the meeting is over.

Homura nodded, "All right. Be seeing you, Soji."

Soji turned up her nose at Homura's comment and left.

Homura smiled widely and clapped her hands together with excitement, "I've been waiting for this ever since the Tournament ended!"

Homura opened the letter and read off the first sentence, "Minori Igarashi is granted access to become an Elite!"

I jumped at the news, "Wait, really!?"

She gave a nod, "Minori has shown incredible talent defeating her first opponent with his maple syrup weakness and going toe to toe with the famed pirate lieutenant. Not many first years have that capability that she has shown."

I smiled and snapped my fingers, "And she'll only get stronger and stronger from here!"

Homura continued reading, "Yomi Kayano is granted access to become an Elite! Yomi shined spectacularly in her match with Renka and even managed to win her fights against Chikasa and Minori."

I cheered, "Hot Damn! Yomi made it too huh?"

Homura continued, "Murasaki Yahagi is granted access to become an Elite! She fought well against Salt Spice even after he, literally, put salt in her wounds, but could use room for improvement as she lost sight of her goal in her match against Renka. Shinobi do not have time for petty grudges or squabbles."

I deadpanned, "Murasaki made it? I was hoping for Kat and Naraku." There was only one spot left and I knew I couldn't have both of them. So I put my hands together and just prayed to whatever deity that would listen for the best result.

After a brief pause, Homura finally spoke, "And finally Katsuragi Kobayashi is granted access to become an Elite."

I cheered and started jumping up and down, "YES! Kat got in!"

Homura glanced at the page, "Hold that thought, jumpy-bunny. From what it sounds like, they think she is the weakest of the five and she got the lowest recommendation score out of all of you. They criticized her fight against Ayame as she only won due to Ayame exposing her breasts, and said she was in over her head when fighting Yagyu. Comments are all… pretty much the same, stating that the candidate that deserved the nickname 'The idiot girl who's in over her head' should've been Kat."

I brought my hand to my chin in concern, "Why would they say that? Out of all of us, Kat is the only one who can use her Ultimate Ninja Art, being a third-year and all."

Homura looked at me with concern, "Wait, you're a third-year student and you don't know your Ultimate Ninja Art? I just thought that you didn't use it during the Tournament. I didn't know that you couldn't use it!"

I shook my head, "I screwed around during my first two years thinking Shinobi school was gonna be a piece of cake. As a result, I never did any of the homework or studying and failed big time. I was an idiot and should've known better."

Homura put a hand to her chin which mirrored my own posture, "I don't think the teachers would've let a student not do any of the homework unless there was a good reason for it. The school has a reputation to uphold after all, and if they let a student do as they please… Well, it wouldn't look good on their school."

I looked up, "So do you think there may have been another reason as to why I've been failing?"

Homura thought for a second, "It may have been any combination of reasons that had prevented you from passing before. But what matters now is that you're developing your powers at an astounding rate. You better work hard too, cause your graduation is in June. Which is 8 months away. You don't have a lot of time left."

I nodded, "I know! Now that I'm part of the Elite Class, I'm gonna take my studies a bit more seriously! I may not be the smartest in my family but I'll definitely try harder!"

Homura smiled, "I like your enthusiasm! Let's see you work hard right away!"

I flinched at Homura's response, "Eh!?"

She stood up, "These scores will be posted to the public on Monday. But before that happens, you need to gather up your team and bring them back here by the end of the school day today. That is your mission."

My eyes went wide, "Wait, what!? It's almost noon! The school day is almost over!"

Homura nodded, "I know. It'll provide a great challenge and test of your leadership skills. It'll also prove you're worthy of leading the Elite Class."

I hesitated for only a moment, then nodded, "Right! Just you wait, Homura! I won't fail you!"

As I turned to leave, I heard Homura speak up, "Renka, wait!"

I turned back to her, and Homura stepped out from behind the desk, "There's a concerning matter we need to discuss. It's about your girlfriend, Kat."

"What about Kat?"

Homura rubbed the back of her head sheepishly, "Well, I'm not gonna sugar coat it. A lot of people at the tournament have… well, expressed concerns about Kat."

I tilted my head in confusion, "Concerns?"

Homura sighed, "Yes, it's about her match with Yagyu."

I nodded, egging her to go on. When she remained quiet, Asuka touched her shoulder, "You want me to tell her?"

Homura nodded, "Yes, I'm not used to being the bearer of bad news. Maybe your softer approach can help Asuka."

I raise my eyebrow, "Bad news!?"

Asuka nodded, "Yeah, there were some concerns raised at the tournament that a lot of people there believe that Kat may be a shadow mark bearer, due to the strange power she exhibited during her match with Yagyu."

I felt my heart jump into my throat, "S-She… may be a shadow mark bearer!?"

Asuka nodded, "Yes, so we're going to give you the extra assignment of watching over your girlfriend… and make sure she's not a bearer of said mark. Also, if you could obtain proof, like pictures of Kat without any clothes showing no mark on her body, then she'll be in the clear. I promise we'll be very discreet with the pictures, given who she is to you."

I quickly shook my head, "I'll keep tabs on her, but I'm not gonna ask her to strip down and take photos! That's sick!"

Asuka sighed, "Listen Renka, you remember when you got accused of being a shadow mark bearer? It's just the same as it was back then. I was hoping you'd be more on board after almost getting disqualified from the tournament."

I crossed my arms, "I am as against it now as I was then."

Homura spoke up, "Either way, your pictures were submitted as proof that you weren't bearing a shadow mark."

I looked away, remembering that Kat was the one who did it and wanted to keep me in the tournament back then. It's sad that they pressured her into doing something that she didn't want to do all to keep me in the tournament. I bit my lip, "Still not doing it, I'll only watch her."

Homura crossed her arms, "Listen, our job is to look after our country and all who may threaten it. The bearers of the shadow mark are one such threat. It's our job to weed out the bearers of the shadow mark and kill them, and according to your report at the beginning of Mistress Sayuri's fight with Dogen, we need to kill them twice for them to be fully dead. Don't make us take such drastic measures!"

I felt my hair stand on end, "A-Are you saying… you'll kill Kat if I don't cooperate on this mission?"

Homura nodded, her eyes stone-cold, "That or she'll kill someone close to you instead. She could kill Minori, Hanabi, your mother, or even you if you're not careful."

Asuka suddenly stepped in, "What we mean is, we're only thinking of your and everyone else's safety. Despite how blunt Homura-Chan said it."

Homura's head perked up, "Blunt? How was I being blunt?"

Asuka looked at Homura, clearly miffed, "It's because you're not considering her feelings with this scenario! Just think about how someone would feel if they said they were gonna kill someone you loved. Would you be happy with someone telling you they were going to kill me?"

Homura crossed her arms and thought for a second, "You have a point there Asuka. I'm sorry, Renka. I was only thinking of our country's safety."

I bowed my head in apology, "I'm sorry too. I know you're only thinking about our country's safety, but what you're asking me to do is sick. I don't think I have it in me to do such things."

Homura nodded, "I understand. Trust me, the world is a very sick place. Before I was on the Grand Council, I served as one's assistant. He was very old at the time and everything seemed fine until he took it out and demanded that I suck him off. Killed the bastard soon after he said that. Got into a lot of trouble for a bit after that but when it was revealed that he had many Kunoichi doing him many sexual 'favors' he lost all credibility."

Asuka tilted her head to the side, crossing her arms. "A lot of people in this world focus too much on sex instead of focusing on who the person is these days. It shouldn't matter what parts you have- you should only judge someone based on their character and what morals they stand by. If you focus on what parts someone else has and what they're gonna do with them, then you're gonna miss out on a lot in life. No one else suffers but you. These words were from my teacher. In our day, being a Kunoichi was hard without having someone look down on you cause you're a girl. Our Generation had the most equal number of male and female shinobi unlike other classes before us where male Shinobi were always dominant."

Homura sighed, "There's always that one jackass that either saw a useless woman, or pretty much a sex object. We've fought long and hard to change that about Kunoichi. We wanted the voices of all Kunoichi to be heard. Not just a few."

I pinched the bridge of my nose, "I'll see what I can do. All I can offer is to try my best."

Both Asuka and Homura nodded in acknowledgment, Homura even smiled, "Thank you, Renka. I know that this isn't easy for you. Especially since you and Kat are so close."

I smiled back, "Thank you, Homura. Well, I'll be going now."

Asuka quickly put her hand up, "Just a second, Renka. I would like to keep this whole thing of spying on Kat a secret for a bit. We don't know if she has one for sure. So there's no real cause to alarm anyone if nothing is going on."

"Alright, Asuka."

I tried to take off but Homura put her hand up next. Were these women not going to let me finish my mission?! "Also, try not to inform your girlfriend of this too. If her powers are truly that of the Shadow Mark, then we'll need to make sure. Her powers need to flow out naturally like that day she faced off against Yagyu. If she's aware that she's being scrutinized, her powers might not trigger under that kind of pressure. So we need her to be unaware of what's happening, just in case. Better to be safe than sorry."

I nodded, "All right, Homura. You have my word that I won't tell Kat."

Both girls smiled and Asuka spoke up, "Well, don't let us waste any more of your time. I think we held you up long enough, Renka."

I gave them both a wave and headed out. I left the Grand Council offices and headed down the elevator to make my way to the hospital where both Kat and Minori are recuperating.

When I got to the lobby, I waved at the receptionist, "Bye, Soji!"

I heard her shout back, "We're not friends!"

I chuckled to myself and headed straight to the hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, I went straight to the receptionist of the hospital, "May I please see Katsuragi Kobayashi and Minori Igarashi?"

The receptionist looked through her computer a bit, before saying, "Minori Igarashi is currently busy in rehab. Poor thing is trying to relearn how to walk. As for Katsuragi Kobayashi on the other hand, she checked herself out against the doctor's orders. All we could get out of her before she left was that she was getting stir crazy just sitting there and doing nothing."

My face shifted to concern, "She didn't have any clothes? Why'd she leave? Did she say where she was going?"

The receptionist looked at me like I said something stupid, "Um, I told you that that's all we were able to get out of her. But if you know a place that she would frequent, I'd check that first. Sometimes people always return to the place that's the most familiar to them."

I nodded, "Thank you for your help." After that, I immediately left the hospital! If Minori was still busy with her rehab then I needed to find Kat ASAP before she actually died due to her injuries! I knew there was only one place for her to go.

I ended up heading to her house near the foot of Mt. Orochi! I called into the house, "Kat! Are you home!?"

There was no answer at first till I heard her voice call out to me. "I'm in the living room!"

I went to the living room and found Kat sitting there in her hospital gown looking completely pale. I sat next to her right away, "Hey! Are you alright, Kat?"

Kat shook her head, "Sorry, Renka-Honey. But I just couldn't sit there in that hospital anymore. I need to get back out there and train. I need to get stronger! I need to be stronger for my parents!"

I placed a hand on her cheek and got her to look at me, "But how can you do that, if you still haven't recovered from your injuries? If you keep pushing like this, you're gonna get yourself killed, Kat. Yagyu did a number on you, you know?"

Kat's look switched to one of pain, "But, Renka-Honey, you defeated her! Something even I couldn't do! You've left me behind and I need to get stronger to catch up to you."

I shook my head, "But, Kat, you know you're stronger than me."

Kat made me release her face, "Then why did I lose and you win! You beat her! Not me!"

I was in shock by the force used against me but it didn't hurt so I sighed, "Kat, Yagyu faced tough battle after tough battle. The soccer kid, you, Naraku. Yagyu obviously was exhausted and not at her best." I really hated to downplay my own achievement but it's true and that's probably the only reason I won I kept telling myself.

Kat backed away from me now, "That's not the point! You went on to win the whole tournament and even took part in trying to stop this Dogen from killing our Kagura!"

I quickly got up, "But I was only able to use my violet lightning once! Which he blocked, and after that my powers started to fade. I was almost of no help during that whole thing!"

Kat just continued like she didn't even hear me, "Renka, you've far exceeded my strength in just a month! This power that I had worked years to obtain, was passed by you in just one short month. I don't know how to deal with all that! I feel like I've failed my parents! Like I'll never become a Grand Councilwoman. Not after I disgraced myself and failed the tournament." Kat was fighting back tears as she spoke. It even threatened to break a couple of times. Kat looked at her own hands, "How am I even going to face my parents now?" I saw a lone tear fall from the corner of her left eye.

I cupped her hands together and held them, "You'll look them in the face and tell them, 'I'm Katsuragi Kobayashi, Elite of New World Academy!' That's how Kat."

Kat looked at me with the most surprised look I have ever seen on her face. "E-Elite? B-But… I didn't…"

Kat retracted her hands and hid her face. I heard struggling breaths like she was trying to keep herself from crying. I put my arms around her as I pulled her against me, "Kat, you don't have to be strong all the time."

We stayed like that for a bit, Kat shed a few tears but she didn't cry. Going from being in pain to being relieved must've been hard on her. After Kat felt a bit better I noticed a bit of red on her hospital gown. I took hold of it, "Kat, are you bleeding?"

Kat nodded, "Yeah. I think I've been reopening wounds since I left the hospital."

I could feel my heart speed up, "Since!? Why're you so casual about this!? Kat, we need to get this off of you and take a look at your bandages!"

I saw a red tint go on Kat's face, "W-Well the thing is, Renka-Honey, that's gonna be kinda difficult since I'm not wearing much else under here."

I felt my own face burn in embarrassment, "I-I know that, Kat! But we need to take a look at your bandages and see if you need to change them in case they're soaked in blood. I wouldn't ask this of you if your life wasn't in danger." I swallowed deeply, pushing aside my embarrassment off the farthest cliff. "Come on, we're both women, right? There's nothing either of us has that the other hasn't seen."

Kat nodded and turned, allowing me access to the back of her gown. I undid her gown and slid them down to her waist and retied the strings to stay like a skirt. The next sight I saw was the most gut-wrenching thing I had ever seen. Her bandages were dark red, indicating that she has been doing a lot of bleeding. I saw her look back as she was holding the front of her gown to her chest covering it.

"How does it look? I haven't seen them since I left the hospital."

I shook my head, "Your bandages need replacing, Kat. Don't you have a first aid kit with a ton of bandages upstairs?"

Kat nodded, "Yeah, but I don't think you want to see how bad my wounds are. Plus if you're gonna do that, you're gonna see two very big reasons why you don't want to do that." Kat was trying to keep the embarrassment out of her voice.

I felt my face burn even more as the image of what Kat was talking about flashed through my mind. I quickly shook my head to rid myself of the image. "Y-You're right Kat. I'll call nurse Haruka to take care of that."

Kat nodded, "Alright."

"In the meantime, I want you to lay down and get some rest."

Kat saluted me in acknowledgment. I stood up after, "Once I get Nurse Haruka, I'm gonna go out for a bit, but I'll be back shortly."

I looked back and saw that Kat had her gown back on. Kat smiled, "Alright! I'll wait for you right here, Renka-Honey!"

I kissed her and smiled, "Thank you, Kat. I'll be back."

After that I headed out, first stop Nurse Haruka, then I'll go and grab the other Elites!
