Chapter 5
Loona and I sat on the roof of the apartment building. The warm summer air blew on our faces, as the sun painted the sky with red and orange hues. In the distance, the streetlamps from the town illuminated Main Street. If this wasn't a perfect setting, I didn't know what was. But to be honest, I was doing this at Loona's request. She wanted to see the sun set one last time before she left for home.
I couldn't help but steal glances at the hellhound. Her mind was lost in thought, gazing at the horizon. The sight of her silky white hair blowing in the wind made my heart race. Throughout the day, I had kept my feelings hidden from Loona. They felt like butterflies in my stomach, wanting to be released from their enclosure. I didn't want to hold them in any longer, because I would never forgive myself if I did.
Taking a deep breath, I turned to her, my voice trembling slightly. "Loona, there's something I need to tell you."
The hellhound turned her head towards me. Her scarlet eyes locked onto mine, but I turned them to the bridge of her snout. "What is it, Evan?"
My heart pounded inside, while I tried to find the right words. "I want you to know that I care about you very much," I stammered. "You may see me as just a friend, but I see you as something more than that. I've been trying to hide it since yesterday, but I can't anymore. Loona, I have feelings for you."
A combination of surprise and curiosity flickered in her eyes. She remained silent, waiting for me to continue.
"I know we both come from different worlds, and this all happened by accident. But when I'm with you, everything feels better. We had some great laughs and shared our deepest emotions, and you showed me a side of life I've never experienced. You may be rough around the edges, but deep down, I think you're the sweetest hellhound I've ever met." I said with slightly more confidence.
Loona's expression softened, and a small smile stretched in the corner of her lips. "Evan…"
I couldn't stop myself now that I had started. "I understand if this changes things between us, and I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I just needed to get it off my chest."
I turned my face away and silently stared at the ground below. A hand was on my shoulder, the touch warm and gentle. "Evan," Loona said softly. "All of this may have happened by accident, but I'm glad you pulled me out." My head shot up in surprise. "This was the first time I had ever been this happy. I mean you're kind, caring, and full of humor. But what I like most about you, is that you've accepted me, despite everything." Loona paused for a moment, deep in thought. "I also need to tell you something."
My heart raced as I waited for her response. "What is it, Loona?"
She twirled her thumbs and took a deep breath. "I have feelings for you too, Evan."
I couldn't believe my ears. A huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulder. "You do?"
Loona nodded her head, smiling more than ever. "Yes, I do."
Without hesitation, I wrapped both of my arms around Loona, and gave her the tightest hug I've ever given. Then she did the same, while nuzzling the top of my head. A feeling of warmth and joy radiated throughout my body. I didn't want that moment to end, not even for a second. Unless there was something else that could top that, which came next.
Loona gently moved my head upwards and locked her eyes onto me. A moment later, she puckered up her lips and closed her eyes. Our lips locked together, tongues fighting each other in a battle of dominance. My hands caressed the fur on her back, while she patted down my hair. I opened one of my eyes, to see the hellhound's tail wagging uncontrollably.
'Did I seriously just score a hellhound?' I thought to myself.
Loona released her lips from mine and exhaled from joy. "You have no idea how long I've waited for this."
I chuckled. "Same here."
We laid down on the concrete of the roof, my arm wrapped around Loona, watching the twinkling of the stars above. The minutes slipped by, without a care in the world, the midnight hour growing ever so close. I grew more anxious about her leaving, because this was the best thing that happened to me in a long time. That was until Loona asked me a question I was not expecting at all.
"Wanna roller skate?"
"You're joking right?"
She shook her head. "Nope, I want to roller skate."
'Oh great, she's being serious.'
In all of my years of living, I've never wanted to do such an activity. The thought of losing control and breaking a limb, sends a shiver down my spine.
"I don't know, Loona. Something like that makes me very nervous."
"Oh c'mon, it won't be that bad. Besides, you sit around all day, the movement will be good for you."
I responded with a squirm.
"I'll let you hold my hand and…" she teased.
"And what?" I asked in curiosity.
Loona slowly caressed my chest, giving me the tingling feeling. "We can cuddle when it's over."
I turned my head over and gave a confused expression. "But don't you have to leave?"
"Yes, but that doesn't mean I can't stay a little longer."
That was an offer I couldn't refuse. "Okay, let's do it."
The hellhound chuckled, "That was fast."
Loona and I laced up our roller skates in the parking lot of the school nearby. The butterflies in my stomach came back in full force. I did my very best to push them back, and I hoped my fears wouldn't manifest. The hellhound got up and repeatedly did a figure eight. She was very graceful in her stride, rhythmically gliding from side to side. Then she leaned and crouched down while turning. Then some confidence sparked inside, telling myself to get it over with.
"I'm ready," I said, while I finished tying my laces.
In two seconds, Loona slowed to a halt and reached her hand out. I reluctantly clasped it and lifted myself off of the ground. When I stood up, the wheels on my left skate slid backwards. The hellhound caught me and helped straighten my posture.
"You okay?" she asked sincerely.
"Yeah, just not used to moving with wheels under my feet."
The hellhound guided me to the end of a parking space. Our only light source was the streetlamps lined up in the middle of the lot. The asphalt stretched out like a race track, inviting us to create our own path. I did everything I could to try and not envision myself crashing and getting hurt. The only thing refraining myself from freaking out, was Loona's hand.
"Ready?" she asked.
Sweat formed around my forehead and my palm gripped harder.
"Loona, I'm not sure if I can do this," my voice slightly trembling
"Follow my lead and nothing bad will happen," she said.
"I hope," I mumbled nervously.
With a deep breath, we pushed off and began to roll at a steady pace, the asphalt beneath us, and the wind in our hair. I looked down at her feet, to synchronize my timing with hers. It didn't take me very long to relax once I found my footing. Loona then weaved out, stretched her arm, and came back like an accordion. This gave me the confidence to play a prank.
I let go of her hand, slowed down and moved behind her. The hellhound looked over from both sides, trying to see where I was. Then I tapped her on the left shoulder and backed away. I did the same to her right shoulder and so on and so forth. After about thirty seconds, I wrapped my arm around her waist, to signal I was done. Loona jokingly rolled her eyes and smiled.
'So far, so good,' I thought to myself.
As we turned at the end of the parking lot, Loona picked up her speed. I was left behind, wondering what she was going to do. Then she spun around like a graceful figure skater, her tail flowing like a fluffy ribbon. Timing it perfectly, she glided backwards and blew me a kiss. My cheeks blushed and I blew her one. Then Loona went back to gliding forwards. Spicing everything up, she gyrated her hips while swaying her tail in a hypnotic fashion. At this point, she was a showoff, but a pretty one if that.
I caught up with Loona, who waited to wrap her arm around me and ruffled my hair. That whole time, I forgot I was roller skating. The experience felt like all of my worries had washed away, creating a carefree environment. I was grateful for Loona taking me out of my comfort zone and experiencing something new, because there's no way I would've done that on my own.
We glided back to the curb where my sneakers were at. I sat down and unlaced the skates, curling my toes in the process. Without a moment's notice, the hellhound licked the sweat from the right cheek, her tongue moist and smooth. Then she gave me a little peck in the same area.
"You did great, Evan," she murmured with a grin. A sprout of happiness bloomed inside after hearing her compliment.
"That's because you gave me confidence," I said truthfully.
"Oh c'mon, don't give me all of the credit," she said sarcastically.
I was so caught up in the moment, I remembered why I even roller skated to begin with.
"Can we cuddle now?"
Loona grinned, "what do you mean? I don't remember promising you cuddles."
My face had confusion written all over it. "You're kidding, right?"
"Of course I am. Come here," she opened her arms in a welcoming gesture.
I embraced Loona without hesitation. The softness of her fur melted everything else around me. The thump of her heart sounded like thunder in the distance. I twirled Loona's silky hair between the fingers of my right hand. The hellhound's tail wrapped around me. Instinctively, I gently stroked the tip. Loona's fingers ran through my long hair, receiving the same satisfaction. Sometimes she licked and kissed my forehead, like if I was getting groomed. We held each other for what felt like a lifetime. Our bodies were radiating positive energy, like heat from a warm stove. Overall, I was in heaven. Not the real one, but my version of it.
"Loona, will you ever come back?"
A few moments passed until she responded. "Sure, I'll be back. Until then, you can have my phone number."
"Thanks, that's very nice of you."
We exchanged numbers and continued to cuddle. Out in the distance was a symphony of crickets and frogs. It added a soundtrack to the silent environment. However, it needed a little touch. Swallowing what I had in my throat, I began to hum the melody to Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd.
Slowly rocking back and forth, I murmured the lyrics by heart. Not only is it one of my favorite songs, but it's a testament to how these three days went by. Loona began to rock with me, an unspoken gesture of enjoyment. When the end came to a close, we kissed one last time in our arms.
"You're not a bad singer," Loona complemented.
"Not really, if I was actually singing, I'd sound like a dying cow." The hellhound humorously shook her head. Out of curiosity, I lifted up my phone and glanced at the screen. "I guess it's that time. Can you open a portal?"
Loona responded with a nod.
I reluctantly pulled out the spellbook and handed it to Loona. She flipped through pages, my heart beating faster. A moment later, she placed a hand on the book. A burst of light flashed before us, followed by a swirling color of purple.
"I'll miss you, Evan," she gave the book back to me.
"I'll miss you too," I said, trying to hold my tears back.
"Call me, okay?"
"I will."
Loona slowly stepped towards the portal, looking back at me one last time. With a deep breath, she went through, back to her own world. The portal closed the second she disappeared. I stood there, clutching the spellbook, memories flashing before my eyes. All I can say is, this had to be the best three days of my life. It was a time I'll never forget, the beginning of a chapter in my life, filled with the promise of something beautiful.
The End
-Author's notes-
Thank you all for reading this story. I really do like crafting stories for everyone's enjoyment, as well as my own. If you have liked, favorited, left kudos, I appreciate it. If not, that's okay. Expect to see Evan and Loona come back for another adventure. Because their story arc isn't over yet.
-Very important-
At the time of this chapter posting, I haven't had any stats since mid September, due to a site wide server crash. Other users have had the same problems, and all I can do is wait. So I won't be posting any new stories until the problem is fixed. However, I will be posting on AO3 (or Archive of Our Own). It's up to you if you want to read there, so I'll leave it at that. I'm very sorry if I caused any inconvenience, but there's nothing I can do right now. All that I ask is to hang tight until everything gets resolved.
