The Painful Truth - Chapter 32: Shinobu and a Six Pack

.

Saturday, November 5 (Continued):

Evening, Security Offices, Morinozuka Estate:

"Thank you for coming Haruhi-sama."

"No problem," I sighed as Oshiro-san led me into the conference room. "I assume this is to discuss last night?" I appreciate that they've left me alone so far, but couldn't this wait until tomorrow's security briefing. I'm exhausted. And this room makes me nervous.

Once I sat down, I finally realized just who was in the room. Akira-ojisan, Oshiro-san, Nagata, Thompson-san, and Ogata-san. They wouldn't all need to be here to discuss last night, would they?

"We've made a tentative decision about your new detail head, Haruhi-chan."

"Oh?"

I almost told Nagata that I bet he'd be glad to get back to Takashi, but after last night, I'm not sure he would be.

"Ogata-san, Oshiro, and I have agreed that Thompson-san would be an excellent choice." I glanced over at him, and he nodded. "However, we all want you to be comfortable with the choice. Your detail head is responsible for your safety and security, therefore you must be one-hundred percent comfortable with the choice and trust him implicitly."

I nodded.

"We'd like you and Thompson-san to discuss his qualifications, and your expectations and concerns privately and then get your opinion."

"Makes sense."

"Then," Akira-ojisan stood and everyone else followed, "we'll leave you to it."

Next thing I knew, Thompson-san and I were sitting at the huge table alone, staring at each other.

.

Poor kid.

I've not really seen her get the chance to just relax except for that Go salon in Seoul. I wonder if she'll want to go back when we return for the verdict.

"So," I broke the ice, "they offered me the job this morning, and I've spent the day reviewing your security records. There's room for improvement and adjustments to make you safer. I believe I'm the man to do it, or we wouldn't be here."

No response. I think she's still processing.

"I know you're just getting this information, and the possibility of me being your detail head is probably new to you, so take your time and feel free to ask me anything."

She paused for a couple of beats then stood, "Let's take a walk."

Interesting.

Evening, Ritsu's SUV, Driving Around Tokyo:

"Help you how?"

"With security. Help them understand what I did and why. Wouldn't you have done the same?"

I leaned back, finished my beer, and shook my head, "Respectfully, no way in fucking hell."

.

"Excuse me?"

"Let me get this straight…," I crossed my legs, resting my ankle on my knee, and resisted the urge for another beer. I also stopped myself from just throwing him out of the car.

What an idiot.

"You thought a car was following you as you were driving her home, and instead of calling security, you decided to take evasive maneuvers yourself." He nodded. "Despite having seven cars and what I assume was over twenty guards in your convoy, you took it upon yourself to break formation, drive recklessly, keep your security uninformed, endanger your passenger, and do basically nothing to make the situation safer?"

"I wouldn't describe it like that…"

"Quiet," I barked. I changed my tone to like I was talking to a kid. "You decided to fuck every security protocol we're all taught because you were worried." Now he's just staring at me, all stoic like.

"And you think that if it was me and Bu in that car and I was driving, I would have done the same thing?"

"Wouldn't you?"

"No." I let it hang for a beat, watching the confusion on his face. Is he that fucking dense? Or is he that fucking blinded by his concern for her?

"I work with my security, not against it. No fucking way I'd ever jeopardize her safety by not following procedures." Shit. I'm so pissed, I'm shaking. I took a deep breath and stopped my bouncing leg. "Bu wouldn't put up with that shit. She'd beat the crap out of me herself if I did anything that fucking stupid."

"But…"

I held up my hand to shut him up. "Look, maybe it comes down to training. Like it or not, you're just a primary. You're not security. You don't have the training necessary. Sure, you could kick everyone's ass, but one-on-one hand-to-hand isn't the bulk of security. That's the last resort. Plus, you're not used to working as a team. Kendo's an individual sport, and you're used to being the boss just about everywhere else."

"I took the PPD training at the BOS before St. Louis."

"Guess it didn't take." Shit. I can almost see his blood pressure rising. "Sure, it probably taught you some things to watch out for, but you can't learn it all in a day. And, like I said, you're just the primary. You aren't part of the security team. And taking over isn't the same thing as leading."

I let him chew on that for a moment, but I'm not seeing anything that says I'm getting through.

Maybe I need to shock the shit out of him. I recrossed my legs and reached for a bottle of water. Gotta keep my hands busy and playing with my gun right now probably isn't the best idea. "How'd Haruhi react to all this?"

.

I swallowed hard remembering her anger and threats. She couldn't possibly have meant them. I couldn't stand watching her with someone else. "Not well."

"I'll bet," he huffed. "I'm sure she was furious." I nodded. "Yeah, people get angry when the fear fades."

Fear.

I closed my eyes and flashed back to her curled up on the seat of the car, eyes squeezed shut. I terrified her.

"Did you manage to scare her as much as Ootori did?"

My stomach clenched.

Ootori?

Evening, Library, Morinozuka Estate:

He followed me out of the security area and down towards the library. "I hope you don't mind moving our discussion. The security offices make me nervous."

"Not at all."

We sat down, and I curled up in the corner of one of the sofas and pulled a blanket around me. Talking about security makes me feel vulnerable.

"Tell me about your experience in Hollywood."

He told me about various actors, actresses, singers, and models that he's guarded. Some of the fan interactions were as crazy as mine, and some were quite a bit worse.

"When I was guarding that country singer, she was being stalked. One night back at the hotel after the concert, he came disguised as room service with plans to assault her. Fortunately, I was there. He never made it past the door."

"Was she OK?" My heart's so loud, I can barely hear him.

"Yes. She was in a different room. She never even saw him."

I have stalkers. That could be me.

"What do you want in a detail head, Fujioka-sama? What concerns you the most?"

I took a deep breath and rolled those questions around for a bit. What do I want? "Before yesterday, I would have said I want to feel safe out in public. With the modeling for both Every Woman and Petto Chinmi and all the attention from the kidnapping, I feel like everyone's always staring. That everyone knows who I am. And when I'm out there, I feel trapped."

"Trapped by…?"

"The crowds. Like there's so many people that if something happened, I'd never be able to get away." I looked down at my ring and spun it again and again. "My life before all this was so quiet, so small. I'm not used to any of this. I'm getting better, but…"

"You said 'before yesterday'?"

I felt my body tense and I drew in a slow breath. "Now I'm realizing Takashi hasn't backed off my security the way he promised. Now, I know I need a detail head that not only keep me safe but can manage him."

"Yes, that was quite unacceptable last night."

"Unacceptable?" I snorted. "He took over my security without telling them. Without telling me. He just did it. He broke protocol. And after he's lectured me about it when I make a mistake. But his wasn't a mistake, was it? It was intentional. He knew what he was doing. He just thought he knew better."

"Unfortunately, yes."

"What's being done about what he did?" I figured they'd tell me tomorrow, but I want to know now.

"He no longer is allowed to drive you anywhere. If you do go somewhere together, it will be either in his limo or your SUV."

"Good." I'm glad they did that. I wasn't going to ride with him anymore, but this makes it easier, and it doesn't have to come from me.

"And if he does something like that again?"

"Some of our reaction would depend on your wishes."

"Such as?"

"If you wanted to continue to date him or not."

Well, that's blunt.

I like it.

"I'm hoping we don't have to find out."

"I am as well."

.

We talked about what Eiji and Nagata did that worked for her, things she wanted to change, and situations that still made her nervous. Despite what Takashi-sama seems to think, she's actually acutely aware of her security and vulnerabilities.

"With all your experience, I want a new process for interacting with the public. The fans pop up like crazy and are sometimes crazy insistent about questions and autographs."

"Yes, I saw the footage when they asked you to sign their condoms. I was surprised when your security didn't step in and tell them no. Turning the request down was the right instinct."

"It wasn't mine. I was going to sign the things, but Renge stopped me. She's much better at dealing with the public."

"We can definitely come up with procedures and signals to make dealing with fans more comfortable and safe."

She's going to hate this, but I'm going to ask anyway. "How do you feel about learning to drive?"

Evening, Ritsu's SUV, Driving Around Tokyo:

He looks almost green at the mention of that dickhead's name.

"Yeah, Mori…Ootori." He started to speak, but I kept pushing, "The two of you are a lot alike, you know. You both think you know what's best for her. You both did what you thought you had to do to protect her. You both tried to run her life."

If hitting him over the head isn't working, it's time for a more surgical strike. "The difference I see now is that he seems to be learning from his mistakes and you just keep fucking making them."

He stared at me, his face getting redder and redder. "That's not true," he ground out.

I couldn't hold back a laugh, "Are you sure? You keep tightening your hold on her and she's going to tell you to fuck off. Before you know it, she'll be dating someone else. Someone who treats her like a whole person, like someone who's capable of making her own decisions."

Time for another slice. "Good thing for you I'm married, because if Bu wasn't around, I'd pounce. And unlike you, I know how to treat strong women."

.

Our eyes locked until my hands started to ache. Glancing down, I realized my fists were so tight, I'd drawn drops of blood with my nails.

I am not Ootori.

I care for her. I want Haruhi to be happy. "I want what's best for her."

"By whose definition? Yours or hers?"

Brow raised, he glared at me. I didn't realize I'd said it out loud.

"You fucked up, Mori. There's no getting around it."

I held my shaking head. It can't be true. I'm not Ootori. I'm not.

"Think about this, what does Haruhi need? What does she need from you? She's got guardians, she's got security. What does she need from you that she can't get from anyone else?"

I looked up, "From me?"

"Yeah. Surround her with enough guards and she's safe, but you're the one she loves."

My heart flipped, "Loves?"

"Yeah. It's all over her face, she just hasn't figured it out yet. You think she'd have put up with all your shit if she wasn't in love with you?"

"She loves me?" She loves me? Haruhi loves me? I've loved her for so long and only dared to dream she'd ever love me back…

"Hey," he nudged me with his foot, "she may love you, but she's a strong person. She's not going to give you many more chances. You've got to fix this."

"How?"

"Pull your head out of your ass and stop fucking up the best thing in your life, you idiot."

Evening, Security Offices, Morinozuka Estate:

My guts instantly turned to lava, and my head spun.

"Drive?" I could barely get the word out, my voice shook so much. "Me?" I squeaked.

Thompson-san's eyes softened. With a sad smile, he sighed and said, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to scare you. But please consider it. You might be more comfortable riding if you knew how to drive. I could teach you on the estate. You wouldn't go out on a public road until you were ready."

I shook my head and realized I'd curled up even tighter when I barely moved. "I don't think I can."

"Alright," he nodded, "we'll forget it for now."

.

Dammit. I really didn't think she'd panic like that. She's good at projecting a strength she sometimes doesn't have.

Gotta change the subject…

"I know you've been learning self-defense. Once your physical therapist clears it, I'd like to assess your capabilities."

"We can do that." It was less of a mumble, more assured. Good.

I let the silence go on for a bit, waiting for her to get back under control. It feels like a week since last night, but it just happened, and it's clear she's exhausted from that and the modeling stuff she did today.

After a few minutes, she heaved a huge sigh and sat up straighter. "How about this? We give it a try for ninety days. We continue the weekly security briefings and work together to create the new procedures and adjust the old ones."

"Sounds like a plan."

"And…" she smiled slightly and switched languages, "you help me practice my English."

"Done."

Evening, Ritsu's SUV, Driving Around Tokyo:

Maybe if I try a different angle. "Is security going to make any changes now?"

He jerked his head toward the window, but not before I saw a slight blush, "I'm no longer allowed to drive her anywhere."

"In my opinion, you got off lucky." His head whipped back to face me. "I'd have said no more dates."

"Security doesn't have the authority…"

"No, but Akira-san does. And don't even try to tell me he wasn't angry as hell." I knew I was right when he looked down.

I quickly checked my watch. Need to end this. There's a naked wife waiting for me at home.

"Think about this. What would you do differently now that you've had time to realize just how fucking wrong what you did was?"

Night, Shiraishi Estate:

"Spot pouting, Ritsu," she leaned over, giving me a great view of her tits, and kissed me hard. "We'll have all kinds of crazy sex when I get back."

"But…" I reached out, trying to grab her, but she backed away too fast.

"After what you said, it sounds like Haruhi needs me more than you do."

"But…"

And with a sexy smirk, she was gone.

I flopped back on the bed and groaned, "Shouldn't have told her until after…"

.

Phone call between Shinobu and Satoshi:

Satoshi: "Hello?"

Shinobu: "Hey, it's Shinobu. Is Haruhi home?"

Satoshi: "Yeah." Why isn't she calling her cell phone?

Shinobu: "I'm headed over. Can you get me in through the garage?"

Satoshi: "Yeah, but why? Why aren't you calling Haruhi?"

Shinobu: "Mori told Ritsu what happened last night, and I figured she could use a friend. And you know her, she'd probably turn me down because of the bother."

Satoshi: "You're probably right. I'll let security know. But if she's pissed, I didn't let you in."

Shinobu: "You got it."

Night, Haruhi's Room, Morinozuka Estate:

BANG! BANG!

Who's knocking at this hour. It better not be Takashi…

Yanking the door open, I found a smiling Shinobu holding a six-pack of Kawaba Snow Weizen. "I've never tried that," I sighed as I waved her in.

She handed one over, "Thought your dad worked in a bar."

"It's pretty exclusive."

Next thing I know, we're sitting on my sofa sipping one of the best beers I've ever tried. Not that I've had a lot, but she's right, Dad did work in a bar.

"I thought you and Ritsu were moving onto the new compound today. What's up?"

"Well," she took a big swig and smiled, "apparently your asshole told my asshole about what happened last night."

I'm so glad I wasn't drinking when she said that. As it was, I basically choked on air. "He did?"

"Yeah. Guess he thought since Ritsu and I are a couple, he'd understand why he did it."

I slumped as a big weight fell on me. Takashi didn't understand anything. He doesn't care about what he did except that he still thinks it's the right thing. Looking up, I focused on her face. She's waiting for me to process. "Ritsu didn't encourage him, did he?"

"Oh, hell no. Told him he was an idiot. That he fucked up royally and should beg your forgiveness."

"He can try," I mumbled under my breath, but her snort told me she heard. "I don't know what to do. I basically threatened to break up with him if he did it again. Asked him how he'd like it if he guarded me while I dated someone else." I leaned back and gulped half the bottle. "He really scared me."

"I'm sure he did."

"Getting in the car this morning was so damn hard. I think I counted to ten four times before I climbed in. It's a good thing Ebisu's still riding in the back with me. I asked him to just talk, and he rambled on about the weirdest TV shows for the entire ride to Hitachiin Studios." I took another long swallow. "And I was getting better about riding too."

"Hey," she gave me a reassuring smile, "you're one of the bravest people I know and a huge badass. This is just a setback. Nothing more."

"Still shouldn't have happened."

"No shit."

"Makes me miss public transportation."

"I rode on the subway once." She finished her beer and shuddered, "Never doing that again."

.

At least that got a small smile. "Want another?"

"Sure." I opened the bottle and handed it over. "What else did Ritsu tell him?"

"Bunch of shit like he's only the primary not part of security and he needs to stop treating you like Ootori did."

PTUI!

OK, didn't need the spit spray.

She coughed, "Sorry," then cleared her throat, "He said WHAT?"

"Told that idiot to stop trying to control your life like Ootori did." I studied her as I wiped my face off with the handkerchief she gave me. "It made an impression."

"I can't believe he said that." Then she shook her head, "Did it work?"

"He seems to think so. If nothing else, it got Mori thinking."

"It's not enough. He needs to know what he did is unacceptable. I don't know much about security, but even I know he made the whole thing worse instead of safer."

"Yeah. Apparently, Mori had a meeting with security this morning and everyone there told him the same thing."

"Good." She set her half-empty bottle down and picked up that white cat from the ball. Instantly started purring.

"She got a name yet?"

"Nodoka." I watched her scratch behind her ears for a few seconds before the cat got tired and jumped down. "She's not really a lap cat." Another slug from her beer, then her eyes narrowed, "Security banned him from driving me anywhere."

"As they should. For how long?"

"Didn't say. I guess for as long as I want them to."

"Good. Don't back down. Feeling safe and having confidence in your guards goes a long way to them being able to keep you secure."

"That's what I said. I told him that if he doesn't trust my security, how the hell am I supposed to."

"He'll come around."

"How can you be so sure?"

"Because he's not stupid. His brain's all full of protectiveness and love and shit, but he'll do some real thinking and figure it out. He understands the stakes."

"Love?"

I looked at her like she's blind, "Yeah, love. That idiot loves you. Has for a while. Don't tell me you don't know."

"Well…" Then she broke off and blushed.

"That's what I thought."

I was just about to ask another question when, "SHIT!" A black cat jumped over the back of the sofa and into my lap. Fucker nearly made me drop my beer. "Warn a girl first, Koko." Haruhi giggled, and it's the best thing I heard all night.

Sunday, November, 6:

Early Morning, United Nations University Farmer's Market, Tokyo:

I can't tell if this guy just doesn't know what he's doing, is a basic jerk, or is a full-blown pervert.

"Watch how the light reflecting from the windows overhead can play across the produce."

"OK." Yuki-sama took a step to her left, "You're right. The colors completely change in the brighter light."

I don't like the way he keeps coming up behind her, putting his hands on her shoulders or elbows, and then leaning over her so he can study her camera screen. Seems unnecessary when she could just show him the screen if he was next to her.

But Numata's right, she doesn't seem to be uncomfortable.

"So, why the farmer's market today? What's this shoot for?"

"Japan's total recycling rate is in the low twenties. That includes plastics, most of which are burned rather than the materials reused. Yes, we get thermal energy from it, but it produces pollution and renders that material useless rather than being able to be recycled again and again."

"Oh."

"I spent yesterday photographing how traditional grocery stores package produce, specifically fruit. When something like an apple is not only nestled in an individual sleeve of cushioning, but then shrink wrapped in plastic, it blatantly shows just how overrun we are by single-use plastic. I even photographed individual bananas packaged in plastic bags."

Yuki-sama nodded, her eyes narrowing as she tried to picture what he was describing. I'm not sure she's ever even been in a grocery store. She wasn't part of the group during Haruhi-sama's commoner challenge.

"I chose the farmers' market for today because the difference in packaging is so stark."

Studying the booths, I could see his point. Produce is laid out gently, but without individual packaging. No single-use plastic in sight.

He brought his camera up and took several pictures. "Here people choose their fruit and use their own bags."

"Interesting."

He turned towards her, and I watched his eyes rove down and back up her body. She's dressed as a typical teenager, but in designer labels. His eyes did linger on her navel, exposed because of her open jacket. It was warmer for an early November morning than expected.

"I'm going to head down that aisle. Why don't you stay here and do a hand study."

"Hand study?" She shook her head, "I'm not sure what that is."

That's when his hand came back up to her lower back as he pointed to a group of people in front of a stand, "Focus on a specific booth for background then take pictures of the hands that pick up the fruit. Try to tell a story about the person by the way you frame their hands. Are they rich or poor, young or old, healthy or not." When her brow furrowed in lack of understanding, his hand slid up to her shoulder, "Give it a try. You'll get it."

"Alright." She lifted her camera, and he squeezed her shoulder before he turned away.

.

After a couple dozen pictures, I started to realize the booth worker was staring. I don't want to cause a scene, so I gave her a quick smile and moved to a different booth further down. It had more fruit anyway.

Watching a toddler come towards the grapes, I quickly focused in on his hands as they dove into the bucket and squished several grapes. His mother was mortified and quickly paid for those along with a quarter kilogram of new ones for her little boy. I did get a couple good pictures of grapes oozing out from between his fingers.

Glancing around for another booth to try, I saw Tachibana standing next to a stack of pumpkins. When I saw him this morning, I couldn't understand why Kyoya would want to come to my photography lesson, but he said it was just a security inspection and to not worry.

Strange how every time I see him, he's watching me and not my guards. I nodded and moved to the next aisle.

Morning, Phone call between Haruhi and Mori:

Ring! Ring!

Haruhi: Who could be calling this early? I turned my phone over…Takashi? Should I even answer? If I don't, he'll probably just keep calling.

"Hello?"

Mori: "Good morning, Haruhi." She sounds impatient. Maybe I shouldn't have called.

Haruhi: "Morning." I didn't bother covering my yawn.

Mori: "I was hoping we could talk today."

Haruhi: "No."

Mori: "I wanted to…"

Haruhi: "No. I'm still angry and hurt. I have a headache. There's a test next week and I could be going back to Seoul. And I have that tea this afternoon. I'm not ready yet."

Mori: "Maybe dinner tonight?"

Haruhi: "No. Too soon still."

Mori: "Haruhi, please…"

Haruhi: He sounds sorry. Like he did some thinking. But has he done enough?

"Tomorrow afternoon. I'll drop by the apartment after my therapist appointment."

I'll probably need that appointment to get ready for our talk.

"But I can't stay long. I have an interview with a teen magazine that evening."

Mori: Won't that only increase her profile? How did security agree to that? "Why…?" Wait. I'm doing it again.

Haruhi: "Takashi?"

Mori: "Never mind." I'll talk to her security later today. "I'll see you tomorrow."

Haruhi: "Alright. I have to go."

Mori: "Goodbye."

Haruhi: "Bye."

Late Morning, Jigoku-san's Photography Studio:

"It's not just me, is it?"

Jigoku-san's closed studio door stood in front of us, Yuki-sama and him behind it. He asked if she wanted to come back and watch how he reviews his photos, then shut us out when we got back here. I asked if she wanted me in there with her, but she said they'd be fine.

Tachibana shook his head, "No. I saw what you saw, but…"

"But what? Guy's a pervert, and she shouldn't be around him." I'd gladly punch him if I had the opportunity.

"He touched her a couple times, but not inappropriately." His glare stopped me from jumping in. "At least, Yuki-sama didn't show any signs she thought it was inappropriate."

"She's seventeen," I shrugged, "and sheltered. She might not realize."

"Perhaps."

"And I know you don't like being shut out of that studio any more than I do. You saw her face. She was worried that he'd drop her as a student if I didn't back off."

"I'm not sure it's that bad. Besides, after we did a walkthrough, there's no valid security reason for one of us to stay in there."

Dammit. I'm not getting anywhere with this. Maybe a different argument. "Yeah, but neither Haruhi-sama nor Renge-sama would put up with all that touching shit for a second."

That got him thinking.

"His deep background didn't turn up any issues, and believe me, I looked."

"Then this might be his first try."

"Or he's just tactile and not the pervert you suspect."

"Why are you giving him the benefit of the doubt so much, Tachibana? It isn't like you." I crossed my arms in front of me, "He your cousin or something?"

"No." He paused for a beat then sighed, "I want to be sure. If we report this to Kyoya-sama, the guy will never work in Japan again."

"Good," I huffed. "Bastard doesn't deserve to breathe the same air as Yuki-sama."

"You sure you aren't too close?"

"You told me to guard her. That's what I'm doing."

He took his eyes off the studio door and glanced at me, "You sure you aren't tainted from guarding Yuuichi-sama and watching his behavior?"

Was I? I'd seen that asshole do some pretty sleazy shit over the years.

Does that make me more paranoid about things or a better judge of it?

"Whatever," I grumbled. "All this doesn't mean I'm not going to stop watching him."

"It better not."

.

I'm in a real photography studio!

"If you look at the screen, I'll take you through how I organize my photos by shoot and then within them. First, I'll move them all off the chips and into the folder for the farmers' market…"

It's really warm in here. Must be the computer equipment. He's got several monitors hooked up along with a big projector, but that's not on right now, and I can hear that big printer humming in the corner.

I'd already slipped off my coat, so I pulled my sweater over my head. Good thing I'm wearing a T-shirt under it. I shouldn't be this hot. Both the sweater and the tee are cropped.

"I only delete the completely useless pictures. You never know when a blurred image could be used. I tend to put the more artistic ones of those up for sale as stock photos…"

.

Damn, she's so cute.

And profitable. I billed out three hours at the market for 20k each, but I can sit here and get paid 50k an hour for organizing my pics! It will only work once, and it is good info. So many photographers struggle with a digital organizing system. Took me years to figure out one that works for me.

Still, gives me an excuse to stare at that skin.

Gotta remember she's engaged to an Ootori. Can't get too touchy.

Definitely gives me something to think about later in private.

Afternoon, Security Offices, Morinozuka Estate:

"You called for this meeting, Takashi-sama. You have the floor."

I stood at the end of the conference table and observed each attendee. Father and Oshiro-san know why I asked to meet with this group, so there's no appreciation on their faces. Nagata's arms are crossed, and he's leaning back in his chair. I don't blame him for worrying about what's coming. Yamaguchi seems relaxed, though I can tell he's looking forward to going back to being my second rather than my head.

Ogata-san and Thompson-san are mysteries, neither giving anything away except for the steel in Thompson-san's eyes. I hope it's just my actions he doesn't respect, rather than me as a whole.

I cleared my throat and started, "Thank you for meeting with me. After our previous meeting, I consulted with others and meditated long and hard regarding my actions on Friday night."

Nagata's hands clenched, and Thompson-san's eyes narrowed.

"I apologize for my rash decisions and for my actions that endangered both Haruhi and both security teams. I will do my best to not let something like that happen again."

I let it hang there for a moment, waiting for a reaction.

Finally, Nagata spoke up, "Thank you for that, Takashi-sama."

I nodded and took my seat, "However, I believe certain protocols need to be adjusted. If I had known that security was aware of the threat, I wouldn't have taken action."

"You should have contacted us," Nagata began, but Thompson-san cleared his throat.

"What changes do you suggest?"

"All drivers, regardless of whether they are Morinozuka or the primaries, need to be on the security network via earpiece and microphone."

.

I guess I'll grudgingly admit I'm impressed.

Not many dynasty heirs would apologize to their security. I've worked with some real assholes that just blew me off when they fucked up. Not that I think Takashi-sama's an asshole, but still.

"Excellent idea," Oshiro-san confirmed. "It will be implemented throughout the family right away."

"And it will be a recommendation in my final report for the rest of the families," Ogata-san took some notes. "I was surprised by how many primaries drive themselves even if it's only sometimes."

I focused on Takashi-sama, "Just because this new policy exists, doesn't mean I'll be letting you drive my primary any time soon."

He turned between Nagata and me, "Your primary?"

That's when Oshiro-san spoke up, "Yes. Thompson-san's been offered the position of Haruhi-sama's detail head. They've discussed it and decided on a ninety-day trial, but I have full confidence it will be made permanent."

Takashi-sama's jaw clenched, and I could see dozens of questions coming, but Akira-sama jumped in, "I approved this, Takashi. There will be no discussion."

After a long blink, he said, "Yes, Father."

He will respect my authority, or I will not allow him near her, dating or not. This next week will be telling.

Late Afternoon, Morinozuka Limo Headed for the Estate:

As soon as the door closed and the privacy partition was raised, I spun away from Umeko-obasan and begged her to untie my obi. "I'm so glad I thought to bring some casual clothes to change into."

She tried to hide it, but I heard the smile in her voice, "A formal kimono really does flatter you, Sweetheart. You should wear them more often."

"Well," I sighed as I slipped on the baggy loungewear Karou sent over after their shopping trip, "it's not like I have a lot of places to wear them."

As carefully as I could, I folded the kimono up and set it on the seat next to me. I don't even want to think about how much it cost. She'd let it slip that both of ours along with Kumi-san's and Cho's were commissioned just for this tea.

It really was gorgeous with intricate koi embroidered on a deep teal background with an orange obi to match the fish. I half expected to see a black cat trying to eat them when I first saw it.

"Actually…" Oh-oh. I can tell from that tone, I'm not going to like this. "You have lots of opportunities. Now that On Okuri's so successful, I think you'll be surprised how many invitations you've been getting for fundraising and other elite social events."

A lump formed instantly in my throat, and I'm glad I'm already sitting down. I swallowed hard and shook my head, but she nodded, "This tea is just one of many."

"I thought I was your guest."

"We both received invitations, as did Kumi and Cho-chan. Kumi and I decided that it would look best if the two of you came as our guests. Less pressure for you."

"Oh."

"You should check with Honami-san about all the invitations you've received. It's been over a month since the ball, and everyone's been understanding because you've been recovering from your injuries. However, now that you're almost fully recovered, it would be smart to start selectively accepting some of them."

.

The look on her face. It's easy to forget just how new she is to all of this.

"How many?" she practically squeaked.

"How many have you received or how many should you accept?"

"Both."

"Several hundred." Her hands flew to her mouth, and she sat back like I'd slapped her. "But most of those are not worth consideration. They are either for causes or groups that are of no status or they would not benefit you in attending. There are probably one or two a week that deserve serious consideration, although attending two to three a month is realistic until you get used to them."

"How…how many do you attend?"

"It really depends on the season." I smiled to soften the shock, "Anywhere from two to eight a week."

"Eight?" she gasped.

"It's rare and usually around different holidays." That relaxed her a tiny bit. "Takashi is invited to many of them as well. You could go together."

Her face darkened and a frown formed. "We have things to work out first."

"What are you going to do about my son and his breach of security protocol?"

.

What am I doing besides not talking to him?

"Giving him space and time to think about just what type of relationship he wants." I looked down at the ring he gave me and gave it a hard spin. "He needs to back off about my security, or he'll find himself without a girlfriend."

She nodded in agreement. "My son is stubborn, but not stupid. He will reach the right conclusion."

"I should hope so after what Ritsu told him last night."

She leaned forward and tilted her head, "I knew Shinobu-chan came over last night, but I was unaware of the reason. What did Ritsu-san say?"

Interesting how she uses '-san' for Ritsu like a contemporary, but '-chan' for Shinobu as a younger woman. She does realize Shinobu outranks Ritsu in the yakuza hierarchy, doesn't she? Must be because she's a woman.

"He told Takashi to stop acting like Kyoya-senpai."

"Well," she fell back in her seat, "I'll never accuse him of being subtle." She paused for a moment, "That might do the trick."

"I certainly hope so."

Glancing out the window, I saw the afternoon sun sparkling off the water in Tokyo Bay as we crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Getting into this limo wasn't nearly as difficult as getting into my SUV yesterday. Maybe it was because I was so nervous about the stupid tea.

"Nomura-chan didn't seem to enjoy herself as much as I'd hoped."

"She's still reeling from Keiko's murder." I shivered, thinking about what happened. We're still waiting on the competency hearing. "I think she's having an even harder time than she's letting on."

"She is." Then she told me what Kumi-san said Mie-san told her about how Cho's been sleeping in the panic room and how she hasn't been eating much.

"It's not quite the same thing, but when Dad, Jarou-san, and Matsui died, I wouldn't have made it through without Dr. Inoue. Maybe I should suggest seeing a therapist to Cho."

"That would probably be helpful. I'll bring it up with Kumi. She can suggest it to Mie-san."

I curled up tighter in my seat, trying to not fidget too much. I drank a lot of tea and didn't want to chance the restroom there with that expensive kimono.

"Have you thought any more about which university you want to attend?"

"I applied to several United States ones, including Stanford, Harvard, Columbia, and Yale, but after what happened to Keiko, I don't think I want to attend any of them." Takashi might think I don't care about my security, but I definitely do. "Karou's also going to expand the line there in the next couple of years, so I'll be recognized if I go there."

"What about other countries?"

"I applied to three in the UK and two in Australia. Since the only other language I speak is English, I stuck to those countries."

"And Japan?"

"Four including Todi. I think a smaller campus might be more to my liking."

Evening, Security Conference Room, Morinozuka Estate:

I caught Thompson-san in his new office before he headed for Haruhi-chan's weekly security meeting. I stepped in and closed the door behind me. He instantly stood and bowed, "Umeko-sama?"

"I wanted a word before the meeting."

"Of course. Please sit."

He waived me to a seat, but I remained standing. I caught his eyes and held them, "Oshiro-san and Akira place a great deal of trust in you by hiring you to be Haruhi-chan's detail head. I just want you to know that that's my daughter you're guarding. She's precious to me and everyone around her."

He nodded, "I'm aware."

"Good. Even though Eiji failed, you have big shoes to fill. Don't let me down."

"I won't. I'll guard her with my life."

I studied his posture, his unwavering determination, and the confidence in his voice.

He'll do.

"Thank you."

And I left to return some phone calls. Akira's staying for the meeting.

.

I glanced around the table to make sure everyone's ready. My first meeting running her detail. Life can sure be interesting sometimes. "Alright, let's get started." I dropped my tablet on the table and sat down between Haruhi-sama and my new boss, Oshiro-sama.

"As all of you know, I've been hired as Haruhi-sama's detail head. Nagata-san's here today as not only her previous head, but as Takashi-sama's head. He'll continue to attend these meetings in that capacity when available. Yamaguchi-san's here as Takashi-sama's acting head and will attend future meetings only when Nagata's unavailable."

I'm hoping to grab Nagata before he leaves and find out how he feels about returning to Takashi-sama's head after everything that's happened. He's gotta be feeling iffy about it.

"Ogata-san's here to observe and Hartwell-san and Quimei-san are here as the consulting team assigned to you," I nodded to Haruhi-sama. She'd met them when they came to inspect her offices. Akira-sama rounded out the meeting, and he nodded as well.

"We'll start with an overview of new policies and procedures." I outlined the changes we made because of what Takashi-sama did, and a few new things I'm implementing right away.

"When will Takashi be able to drive me again?"

Never if I have my way. "At least a month. After that, it's up to you when you are comfortable with him driving."

"Alright. We'll see how things look in mid-December."

I swiped ahead in my calendar, "Next, your return to Seoul for the verdict…"

Late Evening, Security Office, Mori's Apartment:

I'd asked him to come to my office for this meeting. I wanted as much authority as possible.

"Now that Thompson-san has officially taken over Haruhi-sama's detail, I need to know if you want me back as your head."

His eyebrows scrunched, "Why would I not?"

"Allow me to speak frankly." He nodded. "After what happened on Friday night and your continuing interference in Haruhi-sama's security, I want to be sure you'll follow my commands regarding your own security. If you undermine me, I cannot keep you safe."

He studied me quietly for a moment. When it looked like he wasn't going to say anything, I continued, "If I can't trust you'll follow protocol and obey my commands, I can't be your detail head. No one can."

.

Actions have consequences. And sometimes they reach farther than you anticipate. I did not expect Nagata to have problems coming back as my detail head, but I should have.

I undermined his authority regarding Haruhi's safety. I did it in front of both of our teams.

He has every right to question his trust in me.

I meant what I said this morning when I apologized. Now I must live up to it.

I looked him steadily in the eye then bowed my head, "I wish you to remain my detail head. I will follow your security orders."

Without looking up, I could sense his body relaxing at my reassurance.

"Thank you, Takashi-sama. I will remain the head of your team."

Late Night, Video Game Server:

Hikaru: "Dammit, Satoshi! You have to shoot their head off to kill them."

Satoshi: "Oops." I aimed again and splattered the wall with green blood.

Satoshi: "Get that one behind me!"

Kaoru: I can't aim for shit in this game, so I used a rocket. "Done."

Hikaru: "Did you find any clubs for this weekend? There'll be tons of hot girls wanting to show off some dance fashion after being stuck in snowpants all day long."

Satoshi: "Found a couple. One promising. Couple of the girls on my chat recommended it."

Kaoru: "They didn't freak out about you dancing somewhere else?"

Satoshi: "Some did. Not them. They went…Shit!" Two shots and that alien was nothing but sludge. "They went last winter and had fun."

Hikaru: "Think we can get anyone else to go?"

Karou: "Maybe." Another huge insect started chasing us. I took care of it. "Almost out of rockets."

Satoshi: "Mitsukuni might talk Cho into it. Might help her get her mind of Keiko-senpai."

Hikaru: "1…2…3…" I shot the door, and we charged through. Nothing. Weird. "Watch out. Too quiet."

Satoshi: That's when the window exploded. "Fuck!" Kaoru shot his last three rockets, and we had a chance to look around.

Kaoru: "See if there are any more rockets or grenades somewhere."

Hikaru: "Ritsu and Shinobu will probably come. The way those two dance, it's practically foreplay."

Kaoru: "No shit."

Satoshi: "Maybe we should drag everyone out."

Hikaru: "If you get Haruhi to go, I'll pay for everyone."

Satoshi: "You're on."

Monday, November 7:

After Classes, Main Conference Room, On Okuri:

I hope this doesn't take too long. I have a chemistry test on Wednesday, and Satoshi and I are studying tonight.

As soon as I walked into the conference room and sat, Faulds-san started the meeting.

Peter Faulds (Consultant - British Royal Guard): "Thank you for joining us, Haninozuka-sama. We didn't see the need for the entire board of directors, but your presence as the president is valuable."

The kid nodded and tapped a few times on his tablet, I assume getting it ready to take notes.

"As you know, a group from Ogata-san's consulting firm has been here for most of the day reviewing the security for both the offices and the overall building. Taken as a whole, we're impressed."

Chika: I should hope so. It is a Haninozuka property, after all. "Excellent."

Peter Faulds (Consultant - British Royal Guard): "We also reviewed the protocols and procedures for when a significant number of board members is here, including full board meetings."

Lance Parker (Consultant - Delta Force Soldier): "That was my assignment." I studied the attendees and sighed. I hate paperwork. I took this assignment for the international experience. It'll get me a better position with a government contractor.

"Concentric rings of protection and checkpoints are spaced logically with a block perimeter, checkpoints in the parking garage and front lobby, and patrols throughout the building."

Damn, these kids sure are a big deal when they get together. It's like guarding the Obama girls, the Kardashian's, the Kennedy's, a couple of senators, and Taylor Swift all at the same time. Glad I don't have to work for them. Don't know what Thompson's thinking.

"Event security protocols are already laid out for ease when contracting with Morinozuka security with BOS supplementing. It helps having a liaison on site," I nodded to Kitajima.

Kitajima (Morinozuka Security on site): "Morinozuka security has an officer at each family business's main offices. Standard protocol to aid in just such endeavors."

Peter Faulds (Consultant - British Royal Guard): I let Lance discuss his few concerns with Kitajima-san and Yasuchika-sama. There weren't many and were easily dealt with.

"That just leaves cyber. Quimei-san?"

Quimei Guan (Consultant - Frmr Chinese Cyber Security(F)): "Considering your donor base, cyber security is an ongoing concern. While what you have currently is decent, I have several recommendations to harden it against attacks."

I went through my list suggesting another layer of encryption and more frequent penetration tests from outside firms.

Tamoto (Staff – Finance Head): "Is all that necessary? We don't keep any banking or credit card information for our donors. Our bank handles the transactions."

Chika: Quimei-san took a breath, but I jumped in quicker. "It is absolutely necessary. We have emails, phone numbers, addresses, and other private information for the elite of the country. That information must be protected. A data breach would ruin us."

Quimei Guan (Consultant - Frmr Chinese Cyber Security(F)): "Exactly, Haninozuka-sama."

Smart kid and worthy of his position here. "However, I do have a concern about board members and their access to donor information."

He gestured for me to continue. "Considering the structure of the organization and how money is collected and distributed, I see no reason why any board member should have access to the donor database from their personal electronics."

Chika: "I'm the only one that does."

Quimei Guan (Consultant - Frmr Chinese Cyber Security(F)): "But each has a login and established password…"

Chika: I held up a hand to stop her, "They do, but those are for access from computers here in this office." I thought about it for a second. There really is no reason for them to have access when they could always ask the office manager. "However, upon reflection, I see no reason for those accounts to exist. They need network access here for Wi-Fi, printers, and common files, but their access to the donor database will be removed."

Quimei Guan (Consultant - Frmr Chinese Cyber Security(F)): "And yours?"

Chika: "Mine will stay. I need email addresses and phone numbers more often than I realized I would at first. The only personal electronics I use for access are my Haninozuka issued laptop and tablet. Both have facial recognition and fingerprint security along with passwords that change weekly. If you have further concerns, please talk to the Haninozuka family technicians. They can answer your questions."

She nodded and took a few notes.

Peter Faulds (Consultant - British Royal Guard): "Well, that just leaves us with discussing the security for the…"

Late Afternoon, Main Lounge, Mori/Honey Apartment:

Great.

We're both just sitting here waiting for the other to start talking.

My therapist and I decided on an approach for this talk. I will be strong. Unbending about what I want. What I need. I will be clear and precise. I will not be ambiguous.

If nothing else comes from this, he will know exactly where I stand when we're done.

"Haruhi?" He swallowed and started again, "I met with security yesterday. I want you to know I apologized to them for my actions."

My eyes narrowed. He better be gearing up to apologize to me.

Then he shifted until he was kneeling on the floor in front of me. "However, it is much more important that I apologize to you. I'm sorry for my actions on Friday night. They not only broke protocol but placed everyone in more danger. They were unacceptable. If I had been a security officer, I would have been fired for gross incompetence. As it is, I'm fortunate they only have forbidden me from driving you for now." He reached out and gently took my hand, "I won't do something like that again. I promise."

Words.

So far, it's just words.

Words that I've heard before.

"Thank you for apologizing."

I tugged on his arm to get him up on the couch with me, then I turned to face him. "I appreciate the apology, Takashi, but until I see you living it, I'm not sure how real it is." I stared him down, "I've heard it before."

"Yes," he sighed, "you have. Right now, I can only say I won't do it again, but as we move forward, you'll see that I won't."

I took a deep breath and put my thoughts in order. There are many things I want to make sure I say. Starting with, "I believe part of the problem is you don't see me as your equal."

.

Equal.

She's said it before. Many times.

But I'm realizing just how hard that is to accept. Every relationship in my life has a power imbalance. I defer to my parents. I am Satoshi's older brother. Despite the families merging, I am a Morinozuka and Mitsukuni is a Haninozuka. I am the owner and boss in all of my businesses. I have no equal in kendo.

Then she spoke, and it was like she was reading my mind.

"The idea of being equal to someone else, being a partner in every sense of the word, is new to both of us. We're both essentially barely adults. We haven't experienced vast numbers of relationships. I took care of Dad. Before he died, I lived my life based on my wishes as much as possible. I guess Honey could be considered your closest equal, but I know the history of your two families. I know you value that history.

"If we're going to continue to be together and see where this goes, we must be equal partners in this relationship. Neither of us can make decisions for the other. It doesn't work that way. Or, at least, I don't want it to work that way."

I thought about my parents' relationship. Their partnership. Is it an equal partnership the way Haruhi describes it? Mother makes decisions about the estate. Father makes decisions about money and the family. I don't know how much they discuss them together first.

"Takashi?"

I focused on those beautiful eyes. Those open, caring, loving eyes. And smiled. I love this woman.

"Where do you see this relationship going? What is the future you want?"

I see a temple and a wedding. I see us loving each other. I see children and eventually grandchildren.

Is she ready to hear that?

I must have hesitated too long because she continued, "I see a future with you. I want a future with you. You know me well enough to know I don't date casually. I'm here with you now because I see the potential. But," my heart clenched, "any future I picture is a partnership."

Taking her hands, I looked her straight in the eyes, "I can no longer picture my future without you in it. I want you in my future. I need you in my future."

Her smile lit her eyes and melted my heart. "Then we must agree to plan and build that future together. Talking about it. Deciding together." I nodded.

.

And now to lay down the next steps.

I knew what time it was but checked my watch anyway. "I need to leave for that interview soon." The relief I felt when he didn't mention anything about security surprised me. I must have been expecting pushback from him. "I'm also anticipating the verdict in Seoul to come through early this week which means I'll be heading back." He nodded.

"I suggest we both take some time to really consider our futures. Consider what a partnership between us will look like." I tilted my head and asked the question that just occurred to me, "Have you ever really thought about what you want in a life partner?"

"Before you?" I nodded. "No. I always expected my parents to choose my wife. I assumed my marriage would be like theirs."

"Then you really need to think about it. Am I what you want?"

"Yes…"

I squeezed his hand, "Wait. Am I, Fujioka Haruhi, what you want, or do you want what you think I am?" When his brow furrowed, I continued, "Kyoya-senpai thought he wanted me, but he wanted something else and tried to change me. I won't change for you, Takashi. I won't. I've fought so hard this last year to be myself, I won't change for anyone. And would you really want someone who would change themselves for you? Kyoya-senpai might, but I can't see you wanting that. You have too much honor."

Pink dusted his nose and cheeks. I think I made my point.

"Let's find time during the ski trip to talk seriously again. We can figure out where we go from here together."

"I can do that."

"Good." I stood and he got up with me.

"Please know one thing." Can he tell I'm trembling? Don't care. I will say this. "If you ever do anything like what you did on Friday again, it's over. You will have broken us completely."

"I understand."

"I hope so."

To reassure both of us, I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tight.

Dinner, Dining Room, Shido Estate:

"Is everything ready for the ski trip?"

When I didn't get an answer right away, I realized Kyoya's mesmerized by watching my wife stuff her face with ramen. Covered in fried eggs and peanut butter.

"Kyoya?" He started and glanced over at me. "The ski trip?"

He shook his head to clear it and focused back on the conversation. "The BOS has confirmed security's ready. Since the property's in the family, it was already fairly secure despite not being used for years. They've upgraded the surveillance cameras and network and reinforced the surrounding wall. It's ready."

He doesn't sound excited at all. "Are you looking forward to going?"

I watched him grip his chopsticks too tight. "Not really. I don't have the time."

"I'm sure your friends will be glad you went."

.

My friends?

Tamaki's really my only friend left from that group.

I'm really only going because of his fucking puppy-dog eyes.

And Haruhi asked me to.

How pathetic am I that I'm willing to face outright hostility from Hikaru and cold detachment from most of the others just so I'm not alone.

And Tamaki doesn't even ski, so what the hell will I be doing all day?

"I'll have to work in the mornings, but I'll get some skiing in in the afternoons." I'm still the President and CEO of the Ootori Conglomeration, dammit.

"At least you'll get some fresh air." Then he switched to Yuki, "Are you excited to learn to ski?"

"I think so. Tamaki and I are the only ones who don't know how. Everyone else either skis or snowboards, but Shinobu's still a beginner." She sipped her tea and smiled, "Mori had a staff member help me buy all the equipment. I'm fully outfitted."

Then Akito with his lovesick eyes sighed, "I'm sure you'll look great and have so much fun. I wish I could be there, but I just can't miss classes."

She reached over and grabbed his hand, "I know. I'll send you lots of pictures."

"Just don't live-stream anything again." Her face flushed an ugly red. I shouldn't tease.

"I can't. They turned that feature off on my phone."

"Don't worry. Kyoya's just teasing. Right, Kyoya?"

"Yes. I apologize for bringing it up."

.

I signaled the maid for more ramen with eggs and peanut butter and decided to help my little brother out. "How are the photography lessons going?"

Her face instantly lit up. "I'm learning so much! I must have taken thousands of pictures since I met Jigoku-san. He's so patient with me and passionate about his art." She set her chopsticks down and started talking wildly with her hands, "He's so encouraging. I feel like I could actually be a good photographer the way he talks."

"I have every confidence in you," Akito grabbed a hand and kissed it. "After all, you are already a professional."

They could burn each other up with those eyes.

I should probably ask her about birth control soon.

Evening, Inokuma Agency:

Shinobu's SUV pulled up the same time mine did. We both took off our coats in the elevator.

"I like your suit." I guess it's a suit. The skirt's really short, and she's only wearing a vest, no shirt. And it's short, so I can see her midriff. And it's all a deep purple leather.

"Shit."

"What?"

"I wouldn't have dressed like a businesswoman if I'd know I could dress casual," she waived at my outfit.

Businesswoman?

My hands smoothed out my dark green denim overalls. "Kaoru picked it out." He'd paired it with a cream turtleneck.

"Well," she adjusted that huge ruby so it hung right between her breasts, "guess I'm showing all the skin tonight."

.

"Alright, Fujioka-sama, Himura-sama. As you've both agreed to, this dual interview is for the leading teen girl magazine in Japan. It will go up on their website this Friday and also serve as a tease for the in-print interview of just Fujioka-sama that will go out in their December issue. That interview is scheduled for November 21. Is this still acceptable?"

Takemoto-san's client nodded. "Sure. But to be clear, I'm not part of that second interview." It was clearly a statement, not a question.

"Correct, Himura-sama. Just Fujioka-sama."

My client sighed, "I'll need prepping for that one."

"I'll schedule something with the various PR departments you work with…On Okuri, Petto Chinmi, Every Woman, and the Morinozuka's."

"Thank you."

I'll also try to have some short meetings with her during the winter ad shoots this week. I really don't know her as well as I should. She's so different than her public persona. The better I understand what she wants, the better I can protect her.

.

Didn't think the camera would make me this nervous. Haruhi's handling it like a pro, or is she just better at hiding it?

"How did this trafficking ring come to your attention, Himura-san?"

Alright, Shinobu. You can do this. You prepped with your security team, the lawyers, and the agents. You know what you can and shouldn't talk about.

Let's get this over with.

"Through some business dealings, my family came into possession of several strip clubs. My father had me inspect them to determine if we should keep them and remodel or sell them as is. During the inspection process, we found one that was trafficking women and girls in the back. That was in July of this year."

OK. Not bad. No mention of the shootings or Ronin.

"Could you tell us more about what was found?"

Ghouls. "Six women and three girls were discovered, and Lighthouse was called in to help them. They oversaw their treatment and recovery. Fifteen men, both traffickers and customers, were arrested."

"But unfortunately, that wasn't the end of the discoveries there, was it?"

"No." I fucking hate this part. Deep breath. Don't let them see you shake. "After what was found there, I didn't want to keep the club and decided to raze it to the ground. During demolition, twenty-seven bodies were found. Women and girls aged thirteen to twenty-four, all east Asian."

The room was so quiet.

Our agents promised us this reporter would take this seriously, and so far, she has.

"How horrible."

"Damn right."

"What did the police investigation find?"

"Nothing," I snorted. "Nothing past the original fifteen arrested. They couldn't get any of them to talk. I couldn't…" I swallowed hard around the lump in my throat, "I couldn't let that be the end. Some of those girls had been in the ground for years. Some of them were younger than me. Those bastards that were arrested weren't the end of it."

"So, you took it upon yourself to investigate?"

Here's where everyone warned me to not get too aggressive about how worthless the cops are. They cooperated during the rescue and led all the raids. Can't call them worthless.

"For them, it was a dead end. They'd taken their investigation as far as it could go with their resources and had other priorities. Trafficking in general isn't given the priority it should. Because of who I am and my contacts, I was able to keep going."

I'm supposed to be vague here. "I found a hacker and we set about finding all the locations used by this group. Over the course of the next two months, we informed the police of five different locations. The police raids resulted in thirty-eight arrests and saving dozens of women and girls."

I will not talk about those that were killed during that last raid. Heard about that one at Ouran and remember crying my eyes out in Ritsu's arms in the private room. Should have told him then what I was doing. Maybe if I had, Haruhi wouldn't have had to go through all that.

"Fuck," I huffed as I scrubbed the tear off my cheek with the heel of my hand. The interviewer had the decency to ignore it.

"The last raid was on September 22. Three days later, on September 25, you and Fujioka-san were kidnapped."

"Yeah."

She asked if I needed a minute, but I blew her off. "Wasn't sure who had me at first, but certain things that I'm not going to discuss made it clear fast. They wanted to know what I knew. If I knew about their other locations." I clenched down hard on my stomach. It's doing fucking cartwheels. "I didn't tell them shit. That's when they brought in Haruhi."

.

I shifted my focus to the small girl trying not to collapse in on herself. The scar down her face stood out despite the paleness of her skin. Her fingers kept playing with a spinner ring. Nerves or something more deeply rooted? Wouldn't blame her if she's fighting some serious PTSD. Being held and tortured by the yakuza for over two days will affect anyone.

"You were in a Petto Chinmi store having Himura-san's dog groomed when you were taken, weren't you, Fujioka-san?"

I winced inwardly at the hard jerk her head made towards me. Guess they didn't know I knew where they were.

Her agent took a deep breath, "Where did you…"

But she cut him off, "I would consider it a personal favor if that information was not made public. Petto Chinmi is in no way involved with the trafficking ring and security at all our stores has been improved. It was a location of opportunity, nothing more."

A personal favor from the media darling of Japan! Her agent had flinched when she said that. She clearly doesn't know what she just promised. Wonder what I could trade for it?

Before he could say another word, I promised to keep that information out of the article. "However, I can't promise it won't come out from another source. Frankly, I'm amazed it hasn't come out already."

She leveled her eyes at me and gave me a grimace that I think was supposed to be a smile, "One of the advantages to being friends with the Morinozuka's, Haninozuka's, Suoh's, Ootori's, Hitachiin's, Houshakuji's, Kasanoda's, and Himura's."

Maybe she did know what she promised. She certainly knows what she just threatened. And so does her agent based on his grin.

Shit.

Oh, well. It's not that big of a scoop since the location doesn't have anything to do with the reason they were taken. "A valid point."

She nodded, and I continued, "You were both taken from a public space. Did you know why you were targeted?"

"No," she barely shook her head. "There were several vague reasons I thought of, but until I was dragged into the room with Shinobu and she told me why, I had no idea."

Her lips pressed together until the trembling stopped. "Once I knew why, I knew I couldn't let them use me to make Shinobu tell them anything. I went through what I did because neither of us would talk." She straightened and held her head high, "I would go through all of that again if it meant saving the women and girls that were saved in the raids after we were rescued. They, and the ones before, are the true victims here. And we must never forget them."

"Have you had any contact with them?"

"No. They are healing in private and need their peace. I will do nothing to jeopardize their recovery."

I switched back to the main focus of this interview, and asked Himura-san to talk about the rescue.

"Not much to say that hasn't already been done to death with the live stream and all the commentaries after. Chiba Daiju ran the ring. He'd decided we didn't know anything and was seconds away from killing both of us when the police, the Black Onion Squad, Ritsu, Mori, and Chika came through the doors."

.

When the interviewer's eyes went huge, I realized I'd fucked up. Shit. It hadn't come up just how close to being dead we were.

"Seconds from death?" she pounced.

I looked over at Haruhi for help. Her mouth turned up in a sad smile, and she just shrugged.

Fuck. Guess I'll just go with it.

"Yeah. They got there just in time."

"How did you feel, seeing Kasanoda-san coming in that warehouse?"

"Like I'd picked the right guy."

"And you, Fujioka-san? How did it feel to see your boyfriend, Morinozuka Takashi coming for you?"

Haruhi answered like the professional she is. "Relief like I've never felt. I knew it was over."

I cleared my throat to get the attention back. "The important thing to remember is that altogether two-hundred and eighty-one women were discovered, two-hundred twenty-three alive. Of those, forty-two were underage. Ninety-one traffickers were arrested, and over a hundred customers were arrested or killed."

"Truly commendable, Himura-sama."

"My hacker and I provided the information. The police handled all the raids, and Lighthouse and Kakurega are providing all the support to the victims. It's a team effort."

"And," Haruhi got everyone's attention, "one that needs to continue. This was not the only human trafficking ring in Japan. It is much more common than anyone would think. Much more than I believed until I educated myself."

"Indeed." I studied these two young women closely. What they went through, what they did. True heroes. "At the end of this interview, I'll be publishing a summary of ways for the public to help. It will include donating to various nonprofits and how to become politically active in the pursuit of stricter laws and stronger punishments."

"Please let them know they can donate to Lighthouse and Kakurega directly or through On Okuri. Every yen helps victims."

Yuki: You sure you don't want to learn to ski, Haruhi?

Author's Note:

I tried to deal with most of the fallout in this chapter and not drag it out too long. Those two are going to have to talk again, but I put them back on the right track. When it comes down to it, Mori will always be worried about Haruhi and he's a born protector. He just needs to stop being paranoid and realize he doesn't always know what's best. I think he came close here and will come closer later.

His and Ritsu's conversation was fun to write. I knew several of the phrases I wanted to use and of course I had to compare him to Kyoya again. Building the scene around those just seemed to flow.

And Thompson's now officially Haruhi's lead and Nagata went back to Mori. Thompson won't put up with any of Mori's shit, so you'll start to see a new dynamic appearing among the four of them. Should be interesting.

So – do you think Haruhi should learn to drive? Dad's really pushing it. He thinks she needs to be comfortable behind the wheel even if she never gets a license or drives herself anywhere. I'm on the fence – at least right now. Maybe in a few months?

Shinobu to the rescue – had to bring in the cats.

Knew if I was going to bring Mori around, he'd have to apologize to both the security teams and to Haruhi. Hope it was believable. And his point to the teams about all drivers being on the radios was valid. But don't expect to see him driving her around any time soon. Right now, I think she's ride with Tamaki before Mori.

Working on bringing Haruhi and Umeko closer. Expect more fundraisers, high society events, and dinner parties for them and most of the rest of the group where it makes sense. It's something I feel I've neglected given their station in life. I won't do detail unless it has a point but expect more mentions.

Equal partners. It's something I think most relationships struggle with at least from time to time. I've been married 26 years this month and can say that for us equal means different things at different times depending on who's employed, who's looking for work, who's retired, who's sick, who's going through some shit, who's riding high vs low. But we discuss the big shit and that's what's important. At 20 and 17, I don't expect those two to figure it out anytime soon. We're in our 50s/60s and still don't.

Anyway…that conversation between Mori and Haruhi was harder than I thought it'd be. Really made me think about how Mori's been picturing his future and the relationships that have been modeled around him. Thought it was an interesting idea to do that way.

Throughout the chapter I set up a few things that are going to jump out later. Did you catch any of them?

.

Next Chapter:

A surprise visitor at lunch…Haruhi heads back to Seoul…and the ski trip begins…
