Chapter Twelve
Zoë sat in the back of the car between Steve and Natasha while Sam as he drove with Sitwell up front to the Triskelion.
"Hydra doesn't like leaks," said Sitwell.
"So, why don't you try sticking a cork in it?" Sam questioned. Zoë rolled her eyes at them before tuning into the conversation between Natasha and Steve.
"Insight's launching in sixteen hours," Natasha told Steve. "We're cutting it a bit close here."
"I know. We'll use him to bypass the DNA scans and access the Helicarriers directly."
"What?" Sitwell yelped. "Are you crazy? That is a terrible, terrible idea—" He screamed as a dark clothed person dropped onto the roof of the car, pulling Sitwell out through the window, and tossing him into the oncoming traffic.
Pulling out her gun, Zoë fired at the newcomer as Sam stepped on the break, causing the guy to drop of the car. Zoë gasped as another car smashed into their car, pushing them along. The stranger jumped back onto the car, smashing through the rest of the windshield to yank out the steering wheel. "Shit!" Sam yelled. Zoë forced herself into the front seat and grabbed Sam's arm. She yanked him out of the car to the hard pavement.
"Z! Stick to the plan!" Natasha yelled before taking off.
Fumbling with her phone, Zoë punched in a code before lifting it to her mouth.
"I make an LZ, twenty-three hundred block of Virginia Avenue. Rendezvous two minutes. Taking fire above and below expressway. Civilians threatened. Repeat, civilians threatened." As she went to repeat the message, a bomb went off behind her. She was tossed forward, hitting her head against a nearby car.
When she managed to get to her feet, she stumbled to Sam's side. He grasped her arm, pulling her down as another explosion went off. She coughed through the smoke as several vehicles surrounded them. Rumlow climbed out of one of the cars, holding up his gun.
"Drop the shield, Cap!" he yelled. "On your knees! Get on your knees! Now!" He continued ordering Steve down as a wave of nausea passed through Zoë. She dropped to the ground, hands going to her head. Brock sneered down at her.
"Not as strong as you believed, huh?" She lifted her head to spit at him. He snarled at her but left her as he went to Steve.
Twenty minutes later, they were sitting in the back of a van. Once more, Zoë was squeezed between two guards. Apparently, she was less of a threat then the other three. She tuned into the guard on her right side. His finger was tapping soundlessly against his gun.
Z. Get ready.
Zoë straightened in her seat, eyes burning into Nat's. There were only a handful of people who called her Z. None of them were friends with Rumlow and his men. "Right," she mouthed. Nat blinked twice for confirmation.
"It was him," Steve said.
"Bucky. He looked right at me like he didn't even know me."
"How's that even possible?" Sam asked. "It was like seventy years ago."
"Zola," Steve answered. "Bucky's whole unit was captured in '43, Zola experimented on him. Whatever he did helped Bucky survived he fall. They must've found him and…"
"None of that is your fault, Steve," Zoë said.
Steve sighed, "Even when I had nothing, I had Bucky."
Now.
Flipping her legs around, Zoë straddled the man on her left. He tried to push her off and she kneed his chest. As he struggled for a breath, the other guard used an electric rod to knock him out. He took of his helmet, reveling long brown hair.
"Hill," Zoë nodded.
"Aetos." Hill looked to the others, a gleam in her eyes. "Ready to go?"
Taking a black device out of her pocket, she placed it on the floor of van. It caused a large hole to be carved out.
"One at a time," she said. "Brace for a rough landing."
Zoë shrugged, "Can't be worse than what we went through today." She dropped through the hole, laying on her back for a quick second before jumping to her feet. She glanced up the street for Hill and hurried over.
"Where ae we are going?" Steve asked as another car drove up beside them.
"Somewhere safe."
"Great," Zoë said. "I call shotgun."
