"Mom! Dad!" Ollie yelled as he sprinted out the front door and they both squatted down to give him a hug. He threw himself into their arms and enjoyed the feeling of being sandwiched between them. He had wanted this for so long and he wasn't sure what it meant for him now. He had heard Jason and Trini whispering how this weekend was going to change things for them and he hoped that it was good things. His parents looked different and he glanced between the two of them trying to understand what had changed. "Aunt Trini and Uncle Jason just got finished making this huge pizza. Can we stay?"
"Sure," Tommy said as Ollie looked between the both of them and his smile widened. "What's that look for?"
"You're dating Mom," Ollie supplied as they both froze. Ollie sprinted back into the house and Kim looked over at Tommy. She glanced down to make sure that nothing was showing and he just gave her a shrug. He had no idea how Ollie could tell, for all they knew he just tossed it out to see how they'd react. "They're dating!"
"Jason's going to give us so much shit," Tommy whispered as he scratched the back of his neck, but took her hand and they started walking towards the house. This was what they had both wanted for awhile, but they had hoped to not immediately have to admit it to people. Especially people who had watched them avoid each other for nearly a decade. They were met by their two best friends, who both had supremely confident looks on their faces. Let the shit talking begin. "Not a word."
"What? I was totally not going to mention…that," Jason motioned to their entire bodies and Kim felt the blush creep up her neck. Ollie might know something was different, but Trini and Jason could guess exactly what was different. "There's kids around."
"Thank goodness for small favors," Kim muttered as she gave Trini a hug and Trini gave her a knowing smile. It didn't help that she had practically lied to her friend about what this weekend was going to involve. "Not you too."
"Both of you deserve this chance. Just remember that Ollie is old enough that you'll have to explain things," Trini said pointedly as she eyed a scratch on Tommy's neck and Kim gulped. Their inquisitive son was definitely going to notice and ask about things like that, luckily Tommy was generally sporting an injury or two that he could use as a cover. Any marks on her would create a very different kind of concern from their son. "Also- we got a really odd call from Hayley."
"Yeah," Tommy muttered as Sandy sprinted over to Kim and hugged her around the knees.
"Tommy- the silent treatment is only going to work for so long. Plus- you've been friends for years…" Jason trailed off as they both glared at him. They both were sporting extra scars because of Hayley's actions and how she was acting now didn't make either of them feel better about her actually being remorseful. "She sounds…"
"We know how she sounds and I'm going to talk to her this week…we're going to talk to her this week," Tommy said as Sandy jumped from Kimberly's arms to his and she snuggled into him. "Hey Sandy, did you have fun this weekend?"
"We went park, zoo, jungle gym," Sandy rambled on as Ollie grabbed Kim's hand and pulled her towards the kitchen. He was fine with a short reunion, but he really wanted pizza.
"Thank you," Kim whispered to Trini as she nodded, but Kim found herself watching Tommy with Sandy. He had always been amazing with children and she felt a tug at her heart, but pushed it away. She was not jumping back into having children with him after just agreeing that dating would be a good idea.
"Thanks for carrying him up, he's getting too big for me to do that," Kim said as Tommy tucked Ollie into bed. He then walked over to her and she leaned into his body. This weekend had given her a peek of what life with Tommy could be like now. She wanted to get more glimpses of it, but she also knew that they had a lot to adjust to. Even agreeing to date was a huge step for them after all of these years.
"I don't want to go either," Tommy whispered as he closed the door behind them and she let out a sigh. She wasn't sure if she was thrilled or upset that he had been able to see through her so quickly. "Date night is Wednesday though."
"You want to start date night this week?" Kim asked as Tommy nodded and she stared at him. "Do we have a sitter?"
"Kira," Tommy said as Kim gave him a confused look and he guiltily scratched his neck. "I texted her as soon as you agreed to a day and have got us covered for the next couple of months between her, the other rangers, and our friends."
"I…you've never been this proactive," Kim said as she gave him a look and he caught the glint in her eyes. "Oh you are absolutely going for getting on my good side."
"Yes, because I want to stay there permanently. Well, at least as much as I can and I know that a sure way to mess us up is to never prioritize the things that we both know we need. We need time to work on us- when we're not working at the gym, when we're not taking care of Ollie, where you're Kim and I'm Tommy and there's no other position attached to our names," Tommy said and she stared at him, surprised by how much he had thought about this already. She had hesitated to have this conversation for so long because she didn't want another thing on her plate to plan. She loved Tommy, but he was notorious for doing things last minute. "Look- I know that you broke us up, but I wasn't there the way I should have been either."
"Tommy, don't…you…" Kim started as he placed a finger on her lips and she saw the seriousness in his gaze. This was something he had wanted to talk with her about for a long time and he finally felt like they were in a place where he could. "I'll listen, but I'm not sure I'll agree."
"I didn't prioritize us. I called whenever I remembered, I sent letters at random intervals. I did things the way that I did them when you were here and before you say it- yes- I had Power Ranger things to deal with, but I remember you calling and really wanting to talk and I just didn't make time. I think about that phone call a lot, even now. I'd missed your birthday and…" Tommy trailed off as she looked away from him and he saw the tears forming at the corners of her eyes. She remembered that fight too, she remembered the phone call as well as if it was yesterday. He leaned down and kissed her forehead before he cradled her against him, so it was what he suspected. "You were going to tell me then, weren't you?"
"I didn't know for sure yet, but I wanted to tell you what I knew. I was so mad at you for that and then when I did know…all I could think about was protecting our baby," Kim whispered and he nodded. He had certainly helped contribute to their break up, even if most of their friends completely disagreed. "But Tommy- that wasn't on you."
"I made you feel like I wouldn't be there and I'm not making that mistake again," Tommy said as he leaned down to kiss her and she clutched to him. He pulled back as he let out a shaky breath, he knew he needed to leave, but he really wanted to stay with her. He really wanted to continue living in the world they'd created this weekend. "Tell me to go home."
"Stay with me."
