Kion woke up the next morning with a yawn. He got onto his feet and stretched. He then looked down at his grandmother Sarabi, she was still asleep. Kion looked outside and saw that the sun was high up in the sky, so he figured he should wake her up.
"Good morning, Grandma. Did you sleep well?" Kion asked. For some reason, Sarabi didn't respond at all. She didn't even groan or flinch. "Grandma?" Kion said again, this time nudging her. Still nothing. Kion started to worry, and so he put his ear to Sarabi's chest. There was nothing. "Mom, Dad, I need some help over here!" Kion called out. Everyone in the den came to Kion's side, and they saw that Sarabi was completely motionless. "Mom, are you there?!" Simba called out. "Simba, I think she's gone." Nala said sadly. Nobody wanted to believe it, but they knew that Nala was right.
While Simba silently cried next to his mother, Kion was openly sobbing. "NO! NO! NOOO! NOT NOW! NOT TODAY!" Kion shouted. Rafiki was called in to make the final judgment. He checked Sarabi's pulses, and it was true. Sarabi was dead. Rafiki then took the body into his tree, where he laced the insides with preserving liquids to slow the decomposing process.
Meanwhile, Simba tearfully made the announcement of the former queen's death from atop of Pride Rock to all of the animals of the Pride Lands. He declared a full day of mourning, and that the funeral would take place later in the afternoon. Kion didn't want to do anything for that whole day but just cry and mourn, but none the less, his friends tried to cheer him up the best they could.
"It's gonna be okay, Kion. At least she's not suffering anymore." Said Fuli. Kion wiped some of the snot from his nose and looked at his friends. "At least she's with her husband now." Said Beshte. Kion said nothing.
At the funeral, nobody had any smiles on their faces, and the Royal Family was crying. All the animals took turns to place flowers on top of Sarabi's lifeless body to pay their respects. The funeral was taking place in a small field behind Pride Rock, as this was the field where many members of the Royal Family had been buried before.
Kion suddenly had an idea. "Wait. Let's not bury Grandma here. Let's take her to the gorge where Grandfather Mufasa died." Everyone thought it was a good idea. The flower covered body was placed onto an elephant's back, and it was taken to the gorge. They found the exact place where Mufasa's body was left behind. In it's place was a patch of green grass, and a small dead tree. Sarabi's body was placed on top of the grass, and after some of the animals said a few words, the site was abandoned.
When Kion returned to Pride Rock, he was still devastated. All he could do was just sit in the corner and continue to cry.
