Danny's POV
Oscar and Trevor are in the lead car as I'm driving the truck as I don't want to be responsible for getting us lost. MIchonne is sitting beside me in the passenger seat, she hasn't said anything since getting in the car, she's just been staring out of the passenger window.
"You think I need babysitting?" I ask her.
I cast her a quick look to find her now facing me, frowning. "No, that's not what this is." She replies a little defensively.
Now I feel a little bad about how I asked the question, I didn't mean for it to sound so accusing.
Before I can ask her in a different way she sighs heavily. "He's worried about you and I could see how much you wanted to do something and I figured that offering to come with you would help you get out". She lets out a little chuckle. "You pair are two of the most stubborn people I've ever met, offering to come with you shortened that back and forth you guys were no doubt gonna get stuck on".
"Well I appreciate it, thank you and I'm sorry if I made it sound like an accusation".
"But to answer your question, yeah I'm babysitting".
I snap my neck so fast to face her it cracks slightly at the movement. "Seriously….."
She smirks. "I've seen the way you are when you think something has happened to him. I don't want to see what he'd be like. I'm sure it's ten times worse so from now on I'm babysitting you just so I don't ever have to see it".
"Gee, thanks". I reply a little sarcastically. "A little selfish wouldn't you say?"
I can see her shrug in my peripheral vision. "In the event that you do die, I won't be going back there."
Fred lets out a scoff from the back seat. "Neither am I. Jesus. I ain't gonna be the one to tell him that. Death by Daryl Dixon is not somethin' I wanna have to go through. I would lay down my life for you but not at the mercy of him." I look at him through the rearview mirror, he catches my eye and then lets a fake shiver run through him. Well at least I think it's fake. He can't honestly think Daryl would kill him?
"You're being ridiculous, both of you".
Fred raises an eyebrow. "Are we?"
"Yes", I say rather forcefully. They're playing with me. There is absolutely no way they both believe that to be true. "I'll prove it to you that you guys are the only ones who think that. You're just playing off of each other and making us sound crazy".
Michonne mumbles just loud enough for me to hear. "Well if the shoe fits."
"No, because we thought he was dead back at that town and I didn't kill anyone involved, right, yeah I think he'll go a little manic but not like you guys are making it out to be".
"No one saw him die, you still had hope", Michonne says softly like the idea of bringing it up again doesn't sit right with her. "And if no one saw you go down he'd be right back out there looking for you".
Fred uses my seat to pull himself forward, "We mean if we see you actually die. So just know that if you die you're takin' our home away from us. We'll 'ave to live our life on the lamb".
"The both of you need to stop talking now, otherwise I will stop this car and make you both walk home".
My threat just makes Michonne chuckle. "No you won't".
I let out a very reluctant sigh. "Fine I won't but I will have Riley and I move into your bedroom with you and he's at the stage where he does not sleep through the night. All he does is scream and cry. You think it's loud through the walls but imagine being in the same room as him."
"You wouldn't", Fred mumbles.
"I would". I threaten. The Sedan in front indicates left and then Oscars leading us on to a small road which we drive for another ten minutes and just as I'm starting to think he's made a mistake we turn around the corner and emerge from the trees to find an actual construction zone. Houses have only been partly built, the end of the world putting a stop to the development. We pull up to one of the unfinished houses, wait a couple of seconds before finally getting out of our cars.
I shut my door, "How did you know this was here, this is perfect?" I ask him. Three hours into our drive and four failed attempts later we've finally found what we're looking for.
Oscar looks at me with a small smirk playing on his lips while Trevor just grins. "There was a sign for the new area back on the main road. Did you not see it?"
Michonne chuckles, "Clearly she didn't".
Am I the only one that missed it? I look behind me at Fred who just nods his head. Clearly I am the only one or these two are just messing with me.
"There was an off chance it hadn't been started yet so they'd be nothing here but open land", Oscars say, "but we got lucky". They're are a few trucks left here so hopefully there are also tools lying around we can take as well. Anything to make our lives easier.
I spin around in a circle looking at what's around us but other than the trees back the way we came this place is very open, we can see for miles and the houses aren't tall enough to hide in, bricks are only about waist height and some are just foundations. "As long as we keep an eye on the tree line we're good to just grab everything we need".
Fred nods "Should I see if any of these trucks still have the keys in, we'll be able to take a lot more than we could if one of them starts".
I gesture towards them and nod. "Be my guest".
Michonne helps me load another sheet of wood into the back of the truck that Fred managed to get running. We slide it in place but as I step back Michonnes hand lands on my shoulder blade stopping me.
"You're leaking", her eyes drop down to my chest. I look down and yeah she's right, the front of my shirt is soaking up milk.
"Seriously"! It's my fault I lost track of time, we've been at this for a good few hours. "I don't have another shirt".
"Here", I turn to look at Trevor just as he holds out his outer shirt for me to take. "Go do what you need to, we're fine carryin' on without you".
I take his shirt and with a thank you I hurry over to our truck.
When I've finished pumping I pop the bottles into the cooler that plugs into the car, one of Merle's great little finds. It's not very big so the bottles only just fit so if we're here too much longer and I have to pump again that milk will go to waste.
The gunshot rings out followed by another and then another. I'm out of the car immediately but I can't see anything. The others have stopped moving, Michonne has her sword out and the rest have their guns, and then another shot sounds and they're instantly moving. Michonne slams the back of the truck closed and then hurries back to our car with Fred while Trevor jumps back into the sedan and Oscar jumps into the other truck. We need to get out of here and we're leaving with our supplies.
"I'll drive", Michonne says rather adamantly. I toss her the keys before quickly sliding into the back seat because Fred is closer to the passenger seat and we don't have time to waste on seating arrangements.
"Those shots were close". Fred mumbles just loud enough for me to hear.
"I know". I say back.
"Which means they must be from the way we came, it's the only direction that doesn't have a clear eye line". He says a bit louder this time. He's on edge and I can hear the slight tremor of fear in his voice.
This is our only way out of here. We can't go across the field, the sedan is loaded too heavily and there's a chance it'll get stuck in the mud. I have my gun out as we drive back down the road, Michonne isn't driving fast as we make our way around the corners. Trees are good for hiding which can be a good thing but they are also great for ambushes.
A figure suddenly comes running out of the tree line, she trips over the lip on the edge on the road and goes sprawling. She scurries forwards a few paces on her knees before flipping onto her back and shuffling backwards. Michonne slows down but she still doesn't stop.
A Walker appears through the trees, it's attention on the fallen woman, then another and another. She screams for help. The scream is piercing and I know with all of my being that we shouldn't stop but I shout for Michonne to stop before I even think about it.
I jump out the car grabbing the tyre iron that's in the footwell and ignore Fred and Michonne as they call my name. I rush over to the screaming woman. I smash the iron straight through the face of the walker that is lunging for her, blood spurts everywhere. I shove it away from me and then jump over its body towards the next closest one. The iron goes into its eye socket easily enough but it doesn't come back out. I give it a tug but when it doesn't come free I forget about it. Dwelling on stuck weapons can get you killed.
A gunshot rings out and the third Walker is falling face first onto the floor. The owner of the gun stands before me, gun pointed straight at me, he's wearing the standard U.S Army uniform, which has definitely seen some better days.
His gun and body stay pointed at me but his eyes keep darting to the woman on the floor behind me. I hold my hands up. "I just wanted to help her, I'll go now". I sidestep and then take a couple of steps back and then a hand grabs my arm. Michonne pulls me back to stand behind her.
"We'll be going now" Oscar declares.
The guy keeps his gun pointed at us as moves to the woman, he grips her arm and pulls her rather effortlessly to her feet, when she's up she immediately wraps her arms around his waist, he hooks one around her and pulls her so close to him there's no gap between them. He slowly lowers his gun.
"Thank you, thank you for saving her". I lower my hands and offer him the best reassuring smile that I can give.
"Are you okay?" I ask the woman.
She swipes a hand across her cheek to get rid of her tears. "Thank you".
Trevor walks slowly past me holding two bottles of water, he hands them over then retreats a few steps back so as not to crowd the two people.
"Are you out here alone". I ask the question people hate to answer. Do you admit to being alone which leaves you vulnerable or do you admit to having a group which could put them at risk. I've had to answer that question before and I lied because it gave us the upper hand. They could do the exact same thing either to protect themselves or to ambush us.
"No", he answers which causes Michonne to immediately go on high alert. "There are six of us. A herd came through and we've been split up".
I don't know how long we've already been out here for but the sun is starting to lower in the sky. We only have twenty hours to get back, I promised him but if they need help and we could do it then we should and he'd have to understand that, even though he won't like it. Daryl definitely won't like it.
I look at Fred, Trevor, Oscar and Michonne in turn. They all lock eyes with me but not one of them moves a muscle. I know they know what I'm silently asking them, all I would need is one slight shake of the head to tell me they don't want to do this.
I give my attention back to the Woman and Soldier. "We can help you find them if you want us to?"
He glances down at the woman who's still wrapped around him, she whispers something to him and then stares right at me.
"Please. Her sister is one of the people we've lost".
"Can you take us back to where you lost them?" I ask.
He nods. "Yeah". He finally holsters his gun.
"I'm Danny, this is Michonne, Trevor, Fred and Oscar", I gesture to them in turn.
Michonne inclines her head in greeting. "Can you tell us where it was?" I know why she asks, she doesn't want us to be led blindly but I don't think the Soldier notices her slightly accusing question or if he does he doesn't care.
"We've been split up for about four hours now so about half an hour south west of here. A factory, think it's an old chip factory."
"You ride with us", Michonne tells them. She then turns to me. "And you aren't driving, I've seen your poor directional skills".
I scoff but Oscar pats my shoulder. "We've all been warned of how bad they are".
He's kidding. "No you haven't". He just nods so I look at Trevor who's standing behind him, he nods too.
"Oh we have" Oscar argues back, "under no circumstances are we allowed to let you tell us what direction to go in because you will get it wrong one hundred percent of the time".
I fold my arms across my chest with a huff. "There is no way, you're….. You're messing with me".
Michonne steers me in the direction of our car. "No he isn't. Merle told everyone".
I open the back door for the man and woman so they can climb in. "I'm gonna kill him".
"No doubt". Michonne mumbles before slamming her door shut.
